How To Know Your Skin Undertones + Pick the Best Foundation + Concealer | Cool - Warm - Neutral

May 31, 2021
Hi, I'm Molly and welcome back to my channel. Today's video is about nuances. I feel like this is the main thing people struggle with when trying to even out their base. It looks too pink or too yellow. It may just seem like a bit, so I want to explain how I match myself personally and how I match my clients very quickly. You can follow me on Instagram at girl get glamorous and on Pinterest at Molly gardener 1. The first thing I want to talk about is surface tones vs. Undertones I'm going to approach it without

foundation

or

concealer

so you can really see what I'm talking about.

The surface tones are exactly what they sound like. They are tones that are only on the surface of

your

skin

. You can see here a little. some redness due to past acne scars and generally I tend to have some redness around my eyes, some bluish purple dark circles under my eyes, my forehead tends to be a fairly even tone but around the sides here I have some redness and I also have some redness. my chin these are all surface shades once you apply

foundation

these will even out so it's important to match

your

undertone and not your surface tone for a long time.

More Interesting Facts About,

how to know your skin undertones pick the best foundation concealer cool warm neutral...

I was seeing these red tones and thought that meant I had pink. or

cool

undertones

, so it didn't match because your

undertones

are the colors that don't change on your

skin

when we talk about undertones. I want you to think of them as a water color it's just going to be a hint of that shade so when I say silver pink peach yellow olive or red just think of a wash of that color a wash of yellow a wash of peach because if you think about it and you are really looking for a strong undertone you will not find it here are all the undertones that can be found in your skin and foundation, the first one is silver and then we have pink or pink, this one is peach, the next one is

neutral

, this one is yellow, olive and red, so once again, silver, pink, peach,

neutral

, yellow, olive and red. and you can see when we talk about hues why it's important to think of them like a watercolor because each of these hues is so subtle that once you

know

it's there your eyes see it and can instantly

pick

up on that color like I see peach. and the very strong yellow here, the color stripes are my way of choosing to match me and the client and that's exactly what it looks like you're going to take three to four foundations, it looks like they could be a good combination. and I'll start blurring them.

I'm going to start with a pink shade because I thought it was pink for so many years. This is shade 4.75 in Armani Luminous Silk. This is shade 4.25 also in Armani Luminous Self. Next up is Tarte Light. neutral and finally make your skin tone Oh - OH, which is also neutral but leans a little more yellow. You can see they're both neutral, but you see what I mean, how about this one being a little more yellow in my opinion once you get it? your stripes on this is the most interesting part because when you just look at the stripes, 4.75 looks like it's going to be the right shade and this is a

cool

toned base and 4.25 looks like it's going to be a little bit too.

warm

and a little too dark and the neutrals actually look like they could match quite well, so I'm going to start blending them out and especially moving them down my jawline to my neck, so initially 4.75 seemed like a good match.

Now I can see how it looks a little frosty on my skin and it looks a little too light and that shade 4.25 that looked a little too dark once I put it down my neck, it completely disappears and becomes invisible as I start to blend. this one, you can see that with Tarte it actually goes a little bit too gray, so it makes my skin look almost a little bit dirty because of that grayish tone and by doing your skin, we're blending it out. and that's a pretty decent combination, it's a little too yellow so you can see how you're going on, you're just noticing the base a little more compared to that peachy tone, once you start blending them out it should become a lot lighter . and maybe you can delete two like I'm going to delete these neutral bases and we're going to go between these two Armani bases.
This is where it gets so interesting to me the bases that you think were a great combination that we're going to do. a half cheek swatch of this is shade 4.75 which looks like a pretty good match when we first look at it, once you blend it out you can start to see how it looks a little light and frosty and you can see that I'm going to have to doing a lot of makeup to

warm

my skin back up and this is the shade 4.25 which initially almost looks like it was going to be a little too dark and then once we start blending it you can see it basically just disappears on my skin and on this side it really I look like I'm wearing makeup once I've zoomed out, in my opinion, you can start to see how this side definitely looks too light even though they're both shades four. nuance makes a big difference on this side.
I can see the makeup. I can see where it ends. I can see it sitting on my skin versus this side where to me this just looks like my own skin. I want to show you if you are. of warm tones and especially peach tones like me and buy a neutral foundation. I want to show you what's going on so this is the Tarte light neutral and I love this foundation and I used this shade for years, like years, you can see the makeup there. it looks a bit gray and overall it's just pulling my skin down, it makes me look a bit grey, dirty and dirty, it's not a fresh, bright and glowy look, this is another foundation that I love, I just wore the shade wrong and this is the one. that's a little bit too yellow so it's really important to do these streaks but I also think it's equally important to do this half cheek test and start blending it out that's all I can really say okay so this foundation too It's clearly Yellow, compared to the rest of me, you can see how next to the rest of my skin it just doesn't match, it's a little harder when you compare at the pharmacy because they don't have fitting rooms and you generally can't.
Bring samples home, so in that case I definitely recommend Googling samples and seeing what you can find on Google and Pinterest. I made a chart on the blog of all the L'Oreal shades for fair and light shades because I was really struggling to understand it. This is shade 420 and this is their peachy shade and at first I thought it was a pretty decent combination and then when I was looking at it on camera one day I realized that it's a little bit too neutral to be anything greyish. that makes sense it's a little bit darker than the armani 4.25 so i just took a drop of shade 410 and put it in there to brighten things up this one is a little too yellow ok let's be honest is the combination most perfect and flawless in the world, no, but if I have a day where I'm running errands and just going out and I don't want to wear a $70 foundation, honestly, it's a pretty decent combination, so you might have to combine one a few shades, if you really can't figure out your undertones, which I understand, I recommend choosing your closest match in a tried and true brand that has great undertones for me, that's Armani Luminous Silk and Co Gundo, and I want to mention the Masa Cogan because their bases are mainly warm and cool so it's a little bit easier to distinguish if you're really struggling to figure out the undertones and their undertones are so amazing guys so this is shade one one three and I just find That they go with everyone very very easily now initially it looked like it was going to be a little bit too yellow but when I start to blend it you can see how perfectly it blends with my own skin and there's really no makeup look at this foundation.
It is so amazing that it is among the

best

foundation lists. I feel like I use this on a lot of clients just because it's so easy to blend the color and again initially it can look like it's too yellow and then when I start to blend it. You can see how easily it blends, so I wanted to mention this brand because if you're struggling, it might be a good option to help you find the perfect shade. I love this foundation. I would say the two foundations I use most often. They are Armani's luminous silk because their peach tone is absolutely incredible in the second, whether in water bases or moisturizers in a shaded third.
Both bases are simply amazing. Thanks so much for looking. I hope this video has been helpful. I

know

those nuances. It can seem a little overwhelming, so I hope thinking of them as subtle like watercolors really helps.
