How To Grow An Onion From An Onion Top (2019)

May 01, 2020
hmm, okay guys, welcome back, hope you're having a great summer. Hopefully this weather continues well into September. In today's video I want to talk about

onion

s now, as most of you probably know that you can re

grow

onion

s by cutting off the tops of green onions. the bases in water and getting them to root here in my garden, all the clumps of green onions that you see in each of the beds, it all comes from store bought onions that I have simply re-

grow

n and for the last four years I've never had to buy a green onion and probably never will buy one again, but did you know you can apply that same technique to re-growing a store-bought green onion into a regular ball bunion?

If this works, regrowing your store bought green onions is simple, you would take your green onion, you know, buns that you buy at the store, you cut them right here, use the green shoots and then take this little bulb that wouldn't have these roots and put them in water and about a week later they start growing back and then you put them in pots or in the garden beds and boom you have new green onions for free so I bought a bucket of regular walla. walla yellow onions, let's see if we can do the same thing with these guys, so to do this you're just going to need a couple of things, you know, you're going to need a sharp knife, obviously you're going to need your onions. to cut and regrow and then you're going to need your containers to be full of water so to start with these guys you're going to want to take your onion here and you're going to want to cut off the last quarter where the roots are now they're on the onion there's two different sides you know that you have your conduit this would have been growing out of the soil here on this side you know you have your roots and that would have been in the soil so it's very clear to see which end to cut and you want the end where the roots came from so you just want cut a quarter, make a nice clean cut and do it with the other guys and you just want to guess, you know we don't We don't have to measure it, there we go, so you still have these guys that you know are going back in the refrigerator, or maybe I cut them for a Greek salad tonight, but for the purpose of this video, this is what we're going to do. after reading that you take off this first layer of paper peel simply because when you put it in your container of water apparently those peels tend to rot, so they should come off pretty easily now you don't want to, you don't want to.

Peel these roots off with just a piece of paper, okay now we're ready for the next step, so you've got your containers filled with water, the next step is to simply place the roots inside these containers, now you want to make sure. that the bottom is submerged it has to come into contact with water for these guys to start growing roots, so this guy here is not deep enough, I'll add a little more water, oh, a little messy, okay, we're in the greenhouse we're allowed to get dirty, here we go, so let's leave these guys for four or five days, we'll come back and check the progress, okay, so it's been three days, let's take a look at how our onions.

They're making this guy, oh look at those new white roots, very cool, what's up with this guy? Oh, a little white root there and how's this guy doing? Yeah just starting some new roots now those brown those brown strands aren't they aren't roots they're the old roots look at this guy and there's still nothing there oh no wait right at the top there's a couple of new little nodules that come out really well and of course the green onions that I made a couple of days before these guys were ready. planting, so I'm going to go ahead and change these guys like water and check back in a few days, okay guys, we're on day five, let's take a look at how our onions are doing, oh wow, look at that, hey, clear.

This guy, yeah, yeah, so everyone's starting to get those white roots. Now this guy only has a couple of bumps. Okay, okay, okay, so we're going to give it a couple more days. I think I would like to do it. a week in total and now we're on day five so let's give these guys two more days and then we'll plant them okay guys so this is day seven now the tops are starting to get a little weird but You can see the beginnings of green shoots coming out of the center, okay guys, so it's day nine, you can see that two of the four onions are actually starting to develop green shoots right at the top, seemingly out of nowhere, because when you remember that we cut them, you know.
It just looked like the inside of an onion, it didn't look like there was anywhere they could grow, but sure enough, they get really cold there, so the only problem is that the roots haven't done anything more than what they were doing. Day four and five, so what I think is happening now is that we've maximized what can happen with these guys just sitting in the water, so let's move on to the next step and plant these guys so it's really going to grow. These guys in the greenhouse and I have this six by one and a half bed here that has my tomato plants or some tomato plants that get up to 14 feet tall but they just use, you know, the outside. three inches from the bed so the whole time here you know I can plant whatever I want so let's go ahead and plant these no-till onions right on the surface of the bed okay so we have a space here at the end of the bed, so I'm going to put the four onions right here, all we have to do is put a layer of soil.
Now, this isn't just regular compost, it's a potting mix. If you've seen any of my other videos, you'll know every time Transplanting a plant, I basically consider it a seedling, so you always want to use a seedling mix, so I'm going to go ahead and water it and then we can plant our onions to have a nice little landing pad for our onions. just place them on top, okay, one there, one there, one there, okay, the next step is to cover these guys with a little more potting mix, now the ones with the green shoots here, let's leave those shoots green, already You know, no. covered by soil, okay, you know, like a little seedling, you wouldn't bury the green parts, you know, you wouldn't bury the conduits, so it's okay, just a thin, thin, thin layer of soil, I'm just going to keep going. and give it a light watering and then we're done, let's cover this guy up a little bit, hey, here we go, it's day 9, now let's check back on these guys in a couple of days, okay guys, so it's been about 12 days, you can see these guys are really coming. and even this guy here that I thought was dead has sprouted, well guys there you have it, it's definitive proof to me that you can cut the root end off an onion and actually regrow one new onion from it, it was a pretty easy process but there were a couple of things I do differently now over the course of two weeks we had these guys in their little glasses of water for about 10 days, to me that's too long, the Would you have it in the water for maybe three to four days or skip the water completely and plant those ends directly into moist soil, in my opinion leaving the root tips in the water for too long actually didn't do any favors to the process, I really think that once you start to see little white root nodes developing.
Take it out of the water and place it on land. I think it will not only speed up the process, but your success rate should be much higher. I feel like that's the only difference you know between these regular bulb onions and green onions. Green onions seem to be able to grow in water almost until you can harvest them again and that's simply not the case with these ball shots, so that's it for today guys, it's always good to learn something new. It's good to know that you can cut the root. end up with an onion bulb and actually grow a new onion from it.
