How to get Faster Internet speed when you change a simple setting

May 29, 2021
How do you go from this to this by simply changing a

setting

? That's what I'm going to show you today. Let's do this and welcome to another episode of Tech Talk with the Technician. My name is Leron Segev, where I make technology

simple

. You like phones, gadgets, apps, tips and tricks on how to hit the subscribe button and let's move on to today's show, so you went shopping and you came home and there are a lot of items that you need to carry inside. Would you prefer to carry each item individually or put them in a carry bag?
how to get faster internet speed when you change a simple setting
Well, most of us will prefer less trips to and from cars, so carrying a bunch of items in a carry bag is

faster

and more efficient, the only thing we really need to worry about. it is overloading the bag as things will fall out and we would basically have to make more trips again. That's how our computers work too, but some data is sent and received and together it makes up whatever most of us are doing online. we just connect our computer to the router and modem, open a website, the

internet

seems to be loading, so everything works, sure it technically works, but it's not optimized, it's like making those separate trips to and from the car to get each item individually instead of using the bag.

how to get faster internet speed when you change a simple setting...

So how can we make our computers as efficient as carrying items in a bag? We do this by telling our computers to pack a lot of data into a big bag and make fewer trips, and we do this by increasing the size of the mtu, the maximum transmission. unit, this is done in two steps, step number one is to find out what is the maximum data packet our computer can handle as we don't want to overfill our data packet if we like the carrying bag they will fall into the articles. In other words, the data will be deleted and require more trips once we have it, so we move on to step number two, which is telling a computer, use this as the mtu size, don't worry, both steps are super

simple

and I'm going to show you exactly how to do it correctly.
how to get faster internet speed when you change a simple setting
Let's start with a baseline, so first I'll show you that my Ethernet is currently set to 576 mtu, so based on that, let's run the old

speed

test, what are we going to do? go up to that ping nine milliseconds that's pretty good the download

speed

is 140 150 megabits per second keep in mind I'm on a 450 megabits per second line and what's the upload 16.73 my upload limit is 20. So clearly not I'm understanding the speed I'm paying for so let's start the test to see how I can optimize my system so step number one how do I know what mtu size is right for you and your computer since all our computers are going to be a little different, well, we're going to do that using the old ping command, the command is basically just saying to your website, hey, website, are you there?
how to get faster internet speed when you change a simple setting
Reply with your IP address so that you ping google.com and Google responds with its IP address. but what we're going to do is use that command to send the largest ping and one of two things will happen: one we'll get a message from the website saying everything is fine or we'll get a message saying uh the data is fragmented which means that there is too much data in our bag and we will have to try a smaller ping until it works, let me show you how to do this, okay, turn on your computer, type cmd in the search, right click on that and then choose run as administrator, it will What we're going to do now is type ping google.com minus f, which essentially means don't fragment the packet size and then we'll say minus l and put in a byte size, but that's the maximum path.
We size our large package that we're going to ship and essentially what we're looking for is this fragmented, in other words, one hundred percent loss. This is the package is too big. A system is not handling it. What do we do? We reduce. at ten one four eight two instead of one four nine two, we still get the error message. Yes, we reduce it by 10 again. 1472. Oh, look at this, now we are getting a response, which means this is the large packet size. not fragmented and zero percent loss, this is a winner, let's see if we can make it bigger and now we will increase it in increments of one one four seven three and now we can see everything fragmented again, so now we know in this system. one four seven two is the maximum packet size, the maximum bag that we were talking about earlier before the packet starts to fragment, so what's next?
What do we do? We turn on a calculator, take one four seven two and then we have to add 28, so whatever. your number is add 28 to that and that will give you the mtu size that you can use right now in step number two now that we have the right mtu size well the next step is to tell our system to use it ideally for you . you should configure this at your router level so that everything on your network can use this mtu. Ideally, some routers don't have that feature now, if your router doesn't have it, don't worry, I'll show you that too. how to configure this manually on your computer, let's start with the router option to configure it on your router, first you need to access the Rafters management console.
Usually this information appears on the bottom of your router and this is how you configure your router in the first place now, if you don't have that information, this is what you can do, okay, let's go into your router, like this which types cmd again this time, you don't have to right click, you can just open it and type ip config and what we're looking for is something called default gateway and they will have an IP address of 192.168.1.1. Now, of course, yours may be slightly different, so whatever your gateway's IP address is, make a note of that because we'll need it for the next step open your web browser, type in the IP address that you got as your default gateway and that should take you to the router login and what you're looking for somewhere deep in your

setting

s is the ability to manually configure the mtu, see how mine says. automatic, I'm going to

change

it to manual and there we go, that 1500 we talked about earlier.
I'm going to put it there and then click Apply. Now everything that is connected through my router will get that setting now if your router doesn't have this feature anywhere let me show you how you can configure it on your computer and yes you will have to do this on every computer on your network if your router You don't have that setting on your Windows. to type cmd search, right click on that command prompt and click run as administrator. Now in the description you will see this particular line and remember to

change

the mtu to whatever mtu size works on your system and then press Enter and it will give you You're kind of okay, you can also use this command to show you that it actually worked, so there there's my ethernet and then as you can see on the left side there's 1500 which means i just upgraded the mtu to 1500. let's say you don't have ethernet or you want to upgrade your wi-fi too, no problem it's the same line than before, the only thing we are going to do is change instead of ethernet, we are going to use the word wi-fi and the mtu, we will set it to 1500, press Enter to get the ok, run that command to see if everything has changed and there's the wi-fi now set to 1500. simple stuff now all that's left to do is a final speed test to see how much difference this mtu can make.
We can already see a clear difference. Look the download is now at 459 megabits per second as download, the upload is very healthy above 20. megabits per second, there is the proof that mtu makes a difference. Optimize your system, just another tip to make you and your Wi-Fi Internet

faster

and better. If you want more videos, watch these videos here on this topic. Skip to the header below. to subscribe if it's your first time here like the video if you liked it and I'll see you in those videos come on
