HOW TO EDIT VIDEOS FOR YOUTUBE // Beginner's guide to iMovie & my updated video editing process

May 31, 2021
Hey guys, let me fix it, are we in order? It looks clearer. Hey guys, what's up? Welcome back to my channel. Today's

video

we're really going old school. The content, the error, cuts Catherine's

video

s where I'm not going to jump. To a large extent, I won't be doing as many b-rolls or doing as high production as I usually do. Instead, I'll just take you behind the scenes, get back to the basics that I shared. Actually, in my last video, if you saw that last week, I'm going back to basics. Today's video is going to be another episode of how content error does it and I'm going to share with you exactly how I

edit

my YouTube

videos

by going through the

process

step by step exactly what I do and one of the questions I get asked the most is how do I create my overlays? and I do stuff like that inside

imovie

, so I guess that's the first thing I should talk about.

I use

imovie

. to

edit

all my

youtube

videos so if you think imovie is too basic and you need final cut pro to get started on

youtube

guys if you watch my youtube videos there are so many things you can do with imovie and I really recommend you get Canva, it's a free website. I use it to design all my overlays, features, and things that I include in my YouTube videos. Now I will say I paid, so I think I paid 12 a month to get the more advanced ones. canva version that way I can download images that have transparent backgrounds so the video we are going to edit is actually the vlog that was posted before this video so I upload every Tuesday and every Friday if you are new to my channel.

More Interesting Facts About,

how to edit videos for youtube beginner s guide to imovie my updated video editing process...

Tuesday videos focus more on YouTube tips. They definitely have a higher production compared to my vlogs that I upload on Fridays. They are still related to YouTube. It's more of the behind-the-scenes business of YouTube. My life. What I do as my job. All of those things, so the video we're going to edit looks more like a productive work day at home, since most of us are quarantined in our homes. I wanted to show you what a day at work is like for me, how I stay. productive and just some tips for working from home, so this video as of now here you can see it is 58 minutes long and obviously I have never uploaded a video that is that long on my YouTube channel.

I have a lot of

editing

to do to get this down to about 10 to 15 minutes of video, if it's more than 15 to 20 minutes I'm okay with that, but it's still 30 minutes of footage that I have to reduce so there really is a lot that I have. to review and you can see all the clips below. Honestly, I have a lot of them, so in these little sections of me talking I already made some of the basic cuts for this video, but I didn't go that far. because I wanted to film this video for you guys, so some of this doesn't even make sense because I was filming some clips for this video, I was filming some clips for the video before, so my video on how to start a youtube channel, I was also making that day, so some of these clips might not even make sense and might not even be in the final video, but I just wanted to upload everything I filmed that day into this project on imovie. and then I'll go through it and figure out what I really want.

The first thing we will do is review and make the simple cuts of the YouTube video now if you are a brand. New to YouTube, my basic advice I would give is to check out your favorite creators and find out what they are doing in their YouTube videos. One thing I love is when people take their breath away or make the video. a little fast and I get comments all the time saying I talk too much and my videos are too fast but honestly guys those are the videos I like to watch and those are the videos I like to create so one of the things that I do is obviously this video.
I already have everything that could be said, like the initial footage. I already have all the voices. What do I want to say more? So the narrative. There you have it. I already have the narrative. filmed for this video, so I guess you call that a reel, so I just need to review it and make sure it makes sense for everything to flow together, like when I go from one scene to the next, does it really make sense if it doesn't? , I'm going to take some notes and figure out what I could add to make it a little better, whether it's an overlay or an additional scene.
This is a vlog, so creating an extra scene is like lying. because that wasn't actually filmed that day and I don't love doing that, but for other videos it makes a lot of sense. The other thing I'm going to do when I go through this is I'm going to cut my breath like I said. I don't like long breaks or when I'm thinking or trying to figure out what I'm going to say next. I don't like to include them in my videos, which I love. on my macbook pro that I have here is inside imovie, they have a split clip button on the cool toolbar.
I'll show you guys in the overlay that they have a little split clip button and honestly it's my favorite thing, I thought about it once. I have this computer. I was still going to edit on my Big Mac, but I've been

editing

a lot on my MacBook Pro just because I love the click and then split, but you don't have that. option let me find, I'm going to go all the way here, so this little slider here, I actually shared it in my other video on how I edit YouTube videos, which probably gives you more basic tips, so if you want to see it, I'll include it here for you, but this little slider basically condenses everything or expands it, so it gives you less detail or more detail, so when I pull it out it just gives me more detail and what I can say.
Here, that's actually not a good idea. Let me scroll a little bit and see if there's a place where I can tell I'm breathing. So here, if you look down, these are actually the guys. I'm not very technical. With that, what is this? This is like the audio level. I think it sounds good enough to actually be correct. This is the audio level, so I can tell when I'm talking, when it goes up and down, that's when I'm talking. compared to when there's nothing, I'm not talking, I'm breathing and that's something I don't want in my video, so I'm going to click on this right here, you can right click, you can click split clip or it actually shows .
You have the little keyboard trick that you can use, which is what I usually do when I'm on my Big Mac here, but that basically eliminates the extra breathing that I don't like in my YouTube videos, so I'm going to do it along this video and I know there's going to be a lot of it and I hope I can shoot this footage so let me do that honestly I'm going to spend one thing I want. What I do in this YouTube video is calculate exactly how long it takes me to edit a YouTube video, so now it's 9:39 AM. m., so I'm going to keep track of exactly how long it takes me to do all the little things in my YouTube videos.
Okay so that's 10 55. I'm writing down all my times so it took me over an hour and about 15 minutes to do all the rough cuts and at this point I have a video that's 22 minutes long so this is a longer vlog for me and I'm not sure this isn't a manual approach. Was he focused? I don't even know. Ah, I'm not sure if I'll keep it up for that long. I'm more fine. Since my vlogs are longer, I don't mind that as much as I did, I made the first few cuts of the video. Let me start a screen recording so you can see what I'm talking about here.
That would make sense. Catherine, put it together. Well, these are all the scenes that I have all the first cuts of and it seems like a lot. I'm not going to lie and one of the comments I ended up getting on my video I don't even remember when I uploaded it, I feel like it had to be like October, maybe sharing some editing tips and how I edit my YouTube videos. One of the comments I got was that it's a lot to cut off all your breaths and yes, it is, it really is, but I just like it. the way my videos are when I do that, what I'm going to do, I'm going to start from the beginning and I'm going to watch the video all the way to the end, I'm going to figure out what I want to add and as I do it.
Think about the overlays I want to include. I'll add them inside my video and the first thing I did was my external hard drive that I have here again. I showed this in my video where I got my macbook, but I have a folder in this that I'll share with you that is simply called YouTube assets and inside that folder I have a few different overlays that I designed. I have the music that I downloaded from Epidemic, so I actually only have one folder in here of the Epidemic music and the sound effects that I got from them, uh, but I have this screen recording and this one, so one has a point , one doesn't have a point and I want to drag and drop this because when I want an intro scene I want to have this recording that you see here you've seen that in several of my videos in the past what I do actually I'm going to let myself expand this a little bit like this that I will have the one with the dot be at point six, the one without the dot will be at point four and in fact some people have told me that there is an easier way to do this and I believe you, I'm sure there is, but within imovie if you want to have something that looks a little animated, so let me play this for you so you can see that it's like a little dot, it's very simple, but if you want to have something animated, what I've learned it's that they just need to have different screens or different images on top of them. and toggle or make it move and that's how you make it move but let me watch the video and as I come up with new things that I do I want to share with you exactly how I do it and I realized that I was doing something. and I thought I should share it with you, so let me start recording my screen once again.
A little trick I have for you, if you are doing time lapses, don't overuse the use of time lapses if you have too many. your video is going to be very boring, but two, every time I do a time lapse, I do a little zoom in or a little zoom out, but I have this clip and it's a 12 second time lapse that I don't want to just. To get the scene as it is, I want to add a little bit of motion by zooming into the editing

process

, so I went up here to this little shit icon, clicked on Ken Burns, and currently what I'm doing is doing that. such a little fade, I don't want it to be too dramatic because I don't want it to be so noticeable, it just adds something extra and honestly it's not much but I really love the way this looks, these are my blue light glasses .
By the way, I'll link them in the description bar below. I just received them. I have this pair and I also have this pair when it comes to editing my YouTube videos but this has crazy reflection. Anyway, you guys didn't care about that, so I'm at a point where I want to create an overlay or I want to include something within this video, so at this point I'm talking about how I have a home gym. and how I've been using my home gym and I just filmed an igtv house tour for my igtv so if you guys don't follow me on Instagram I'm trying to upload an igtv every week or every two weeks so I basically get one extra video a week compared to YouTube, so be sure to follow me on Instagram, but I filmed a tour of the house that includes scenes from my gym that I want to later incorporate into this video because I think it will make it better. what am I going to do I'm going to go back to projects click on house tour okay let's find the gym place so these two clubs right that's not my gem okay so these two clips are from my home gym.
I'm just going to copy it, go to work at home, okay, we have a gym at home, so I'm going to copy them and I actually need to flip the footage, okay, and I'm so used to doing this guys? I'm so sorry I did this quickly so let me flip this back so the video right now is obviously on its side so what I did was I went to this crop section and I'm going to flip it upright in the second moment. What I'm going to do is, since I have this video on top of this, I can upload it to show you a little better.
I have this video on top of this one, I want you to watch both videos at the same time. So what I'm going to do, I'm going to select this top video. I'm going to review this option here and right now it's in court. In fact, I'm going to select image in image, I'm going to drag this. So it's bigger, but I'm going to put this here on the left side, but then it will appear there on the side, so one thing I want to do is separate it a little bit from the actual video. I'm going to click on this and it's just going to create an outline.
It is currently selected in black. I'm fine with that and one of my favorite tricks. I've actually shared it in another video before, but I'll just go. to copy this and since I want this to be set up exactly the same way as everything I want to copy, I want the way it is cropped, meaning the way it is flipped, as well as the video overlay settings, so that the settings are selected in this clip I'm clicking on this video. I'm going to go up to edit and paste everything and here on the right side you can see thekeyboard shortcuts, which is what I usually do, but I'm just going to click paste all and then.
What's going to happen when I play this? It's going to be exactly the same, so it's going to appear in the exact same place, it's going to be flipped the right way and it's going to look perfect and it goes from one video to the next seamlessly and seriously, it's the best. Tip I have for you, if you're cropping like a close up and you want it to be the same for a couple of different clips that you have within your video, you can do the exact same thing for that or if you're doing color correction.
Guys what changed the game was my hair like that all the time, oh what is that? What is happening here so far? I have shared two different types of overlays with you, the first one is just my recording screen, it is something I have saved on my hard drive. drive like I showed you, the second one includes a video about a video, but one of the things I get asked a lot is how do I create my other screens, so what I want to show you is exactly how I do that. The point where I'm sharing the first tip in this YouTube video is to go and exercise, so I'm going to go to Canva, of course, my favorite.
In fact, I already have it ready, so let me show you what I have. Continuing here, I'm going to zoom out a bit. I have a file that looks like it has nothing in it. If I actually add a background, you can see that it actually has something there, so they all have white text over them, you can just I don't see them right now, but these are all different overlay screens that I've used in the past or plan to use again in the future, so I'm going to use page 22 and page 23 and I'm just going to modify the text.
I'm going to change this to move your body and then this one. You might be wondering what the difference is between these two. I feel like it's pretty easy to see, even right here, one is smaller and the other is bigger. One thing I like to do when I'm creating my overlay screens, I like them to have some kind of movement within them, so for this one, it starts small, it's going to get big and then it gets small again and honestly, I just like it. their appearance, so create some templates they can use over and over again.
There are definitely times where I design new overlays and it's a little more work for me but you guys know my brand is set up a certain way so for you guys to recognize things you know I want my videos to be familiar so every Whenever I have an overlay like that I want it to look familiar to you, so what I do is I create these templates as I go along where I can. Use it over and over again and then it makes my editing process much faster. Another example of an overlay that I have for you is when I include, let me jump to the screen right now so you can see exactly what I am.
Speaking of which, I designed a little graphic that looks like a movie, but honestly, it doesn't look like a movie at all. You know, I designed it myself and I wanted it to have that look, but I didn't want it to be 100% cinematic. and I want to show you how I create that and how I flip the overlay because this is not an overlay that goes on top of my videos, actually my video has to go on top of this overlay, so what am I doing? I'm responding to an email right here, so I'll come back to this if I scroll down far enough.
I already have this overlay created. This is what it looks like, so it has my typical marble background that you can barely see. just a white block and then these are little bits of text guys that's honestly what it is it's so simple but one thing you might not notice is that I change the numbers and the words that go into this and it's a little bit sneaky, but it's kind of like that for me, so I have to get really close because this number up here I actually do it on the day I recorded the video, so it's 26 and then down here there's actually three.
I changed this based on the months so I know 3. 26 this was filmed on March 26 and then up here it always says 2020 or at least this year it will say 2020 and then if I continue with this for 2021, I'll change it here. I have what I'm really doing. I'm just going to put emails in and then that's the screen overlay and so far, oh, I just like to hit myself so far, none of the downloads that I've done have needed a transparent background, so from what you guys have seen, all of those things you can create for free in canva actually that's not true my recording screen that I designed uses a transparent background but everything that I've really shown you me designing you don't need an advanced version of canva, you can get the free version okay?
I'm going to drag and drop this and this is what it looks like now. I have all these fast forwards, so I turned them into a time lapse that I actually want to drag on top of this, so I'm going to bring I'm going to bring them out, I'm going to bring them up up here, I'm going to adjust this because now we just need it in that place. Obviously, when I put this on this, now you can't see what I designed, so what I have to do. I'm going to select the first one. I'm going to go to this overlay settings again.
We don't want it to be cut. We want image and image. I tell you that you can do many things with Imovie Perfect. I want it like this, I don't want it to dissolve again, so I'm going to make it zero seconds and then it will appear immediately, so I'm going to select this and again select all of these edit and paste. settings we want video overlay settings even though they could be all and now the way it looks is going to jump and it's going to look like this so smart but so simple honestly so now what am I going to do with the rest of the afternoon Honestly, this is going to be a multi-day edition and I knew it was going to be that way.
In fact I would spend two or three days on most of my YouTube videos if I focused and just worked on this today, I know I could do it but there are other things I want to do today so I'm still tracking my time but currently I'm only 11 36 in this video, so I'm about halfway through all the footage and I need to go. Going through and completing all the overlays doing exactly what I already showed you with the different types of overlays that I like to create and yeah, just scroll through the video and then I'll see you here probably tomorrow adding music. color correction and other things that need to be done for this video so I'll see you here in a second year well guys hello welcome back it's the second day of editing and honestly I think I'm going to finish this video. in the next two hours, at least editing and then scheduling it, it will take a little more time, but yesterday I calculated exactly how much time I spent on everything, so when making the first initial cuts, I actually did some of that before I even started . this video, so I'm going to increase this time a little bit yesterday I worked an hour and 16 minutes on those first cuts, but I guess I spent at least an extra half hour on that another day, so I'll say about an hour and 45 that I spent making the first cuts and then doing overlays, cropping, like speeding things up, doing those zoom fades every time I do time lapses, all that stuff, there's a decent amount of work with my second round of editing that's over So far I've taken three hours and I'm going to spend about five hours editing this YouTube video and I would say for me it's more of a basic YouTube video because it's a vlog.
I don't have as many overlays as I really don't have to think that much about my shots, it's just whatever I got that day. I edit it to make sense and make it a good video. Next thing I'll do in my editing process. I'm going to watch this from start to finish again and while I'm at it I'll do a little color correction now. I used to do more advanced color correction before I discovered my camera settings that I really like now that I really like my camera settings, I do minimal color correction and in most of the videos you see now , I don't actually do any color correction, it's just the quality of the image that comes from my camera, since I have so many different shots in this video, I'm going to guess that when I jump scenes, the lighting will change, so maybe Maybe the contrast is a little off or there are too many shadows compared to the highlights and I just need to look at that. and make some adjustments, so let me find a place where I can share with you an example of what is happening.
Okay, this place here you can actually see, so this clip and then go to this clip, this one I'm on. Currently, it has a lot more color, more saturation, so what I might end up doing is this scene increasing the saturation. In fact, now that I'm looking at it I feel like it could definitely use some help, but then here we go. and then from this clip we drop down and if this is a really really dark clip, one thing I'm going to do is take this one. I'm going to click on this little painters palette up here if I drag this this is just going to increase the exposure now I don't want the exposure to be too high because I don't want it to look dull and I don't want it to be like the highlights are really popping and on your face, one thing I like to do is take the midtones right in the center here and I'll drag them to a point where I like it, so now I think it flows, I could still make it a little bit brighter, but I think that flows a little bit better so we can see that this is the before, that's the after, it definitely made a difference in terms of brightness and what I'm going to do, I'm going to copy that clip.
I'm going to highlight all of these because I know they're in the same scene, we're going to paste the color correction and now they're all going to be at the same time, so what I'm going to do, I'm actually going to start. At first I'm going to watch this video in full whenever I notice it needs a little more saturation or a change like the lightness or darkness of the clip or even when I'm changing scenes if there's too much. There is a big change. I'm going to go in and just do these simple color corrections that I just showed you.
I tell them I do minimal things with an imovie and I really think it all comes down to your camera settings, okay, right now it's, oh my gosh, it's so fun. I started yesterday at 9 39, today I start at 9 42. Let's do this and that's how we finish, so honestly, the color correction is 9 57. That took me 15 minutes, that's not bad at all. The next thing I have to do and really the last thing I have to do before watching it one more time, I'm going to go to Epidemia Sound and I'm going to choose the music for the video, my intros and my outros always have the same song every time, so I already added it at the beginning and in fact I already added it to my errors too, but now I need to find the music. that I want throughout the video so I have to figure out what the clips are because I know there are certain scenes where I just have a little bit of extra footage and I want the music to be a little bit louder and then there's a lot of background noise because there's a lot of me talking so I need to figure out the mood I want for this video in terms of music and then I'll go to the epidemic sound and find some music and add it.
I include it in the video as a little tip for you guys when you add music, you can add your music in two different places within imovie. I have this bottom section down here, and in fact, if I scroll, I have a song here at this bottom. section one of the main reasons I use that section is for background music, it's really nice because then the audio isn't actually attached to your videos which means it doesn't matter if you do extra trimming or anything within your video, like if you delete In a full clip the audio will still be there, it's not like it's going to jump and move, but there are certain points where I don't want the music to move no matter what, like when I'm listening to material b-roll and there's no sound and I want the audio to be a little bit louder, so that's when I move the music up here and this will actually be attached to this video, so if there are any changes to this video or any changes made to the ones in the middle of where In fact, I'm going to make this sound a little bit louder, that is, when it's not going to move, if that makes any sense, I'll attach this clip and it will actually stay there and I want it to this specifically. partly because here you can see there's no audio in these clips, so I'm going to want this to go up a little bit louder and actually what I'm going to do is I'm going to end up trimming this and I'm I'm going to turn this up a little bit louder. , so let's say I like 11 right now.
I'm going to have to see how it sounds and then this will be attached to this clip and it won't move no matter what compared to if. I actually had it in this bottom section down here and then I ended up deciding that I wanted to change clips in the future, it could move around and then it's more work that I have to do now, one of the reasons I save. Adding music until the end is because I'm at the point where I already like the flow of this video. I already cut everything I wanted to cut, so I'm sure I'll do one more run after the music. was added but I know I already like everything in this video compared to if I added music a little too soon I would end up wasting a lot of time because then I would have to change where the music gets louder and whereIt gets quieter and it's just background noise and it's more of a pain in the ass, so I save adding music for the last step of my editing process.
Now it's 10 41, so I spent exactly 59 minutes this morning working on this YouTube video. crooked, I think it's straight, so in total I ended up spending about six hours working on this YouTube video just editing it and there's definitely more work to do in terms of creating the thumbnail with the title, the tags, the description, everything. that adding ads, I mean, it's a lot to upload a youtube video, but I just wanted to show you behind the scenes my step by step process when it comes to editing my youtube video, it's currently being exported and I'm going to follow the following steps that I just explained to you, so if there are other videos you want to see on my channel, I'm thinking of making an

updated

video on how I edit my thumbnails and of course I can make others on how I edit my thumbnails. write my description or how I create my tags and really optimize my videos.
I feel like it's been a while since I talked about it, so if you want to see a video about it, let me know in the description or not. in the description bar, let me know in the comments section below and I'll see you here on Tuesday with another video and on Friday with a vlog. If you want to see the video I edited, I'll include that too. in the description bar below so you can check it out and see what my editing style is like, but yeah, that's it, I hope you liked it. I'm leaving here, I guess we're at the house and I'm at the house. board I want to show you guys, what did I just say?
I don't like that, oh oh, that's not good, that sounded like complete gibberish, they say, oh, she said she liked this guy, are you in? I don't know, she just needed the wrong time frame for me, like doing this, she shouldn't really notice, like I'm not confused that you were there.
