How to Build a Fence Panel Trellis - Cattle Panel, Hog Wire etc.

Jun 08, 2021
Large vining plants like these cucumbers, winter squash and melons are perfectly happy spreading all over the ground, but by

trellis

ing them this way I can grow more in a smaller space and reduces disease by increasing airflow around them. the plants. It also brings the Flowers reach the pollinators more easily and the plants reach me so I don't have to bend down to work on them. I'm Kyle from Urban Farmstead and in this video I'm going to show you how I built this.

This is a livestock

fence

panel

. You may have also heard it called a

cattle

panel or a

wire

hog panel, those are accurate names because depending on the type of livestock you intend to keep the design will be a little different. This is actually a sheep panel and this one is 5 feet tall while many of the others are only 4 feet tall. This one also has four squares. for four squares compared to the larger rectangular shapes in the wiring with some of the others, now this is more expensive because there's more material with those squares, but I like the size and look at this.

I have also used cattle panel and hot wire panel. I think they are all great, what I always use are these cattle panels, there are other products that look similar and work similarly, like the mesh wire that goes in concrete, but they are pretty flimsy wires. I like how sturdy it is. galvanized so it won't rest, so it has a very nice shape, it stays straight and you can grow anything on this. I mean, I've grown pumpkins that were 25 to 35 pounds and as long as the vine can support the weight of that fruit, trellis, that piece can handle it in this video.

I'm going to show you exactly how to make this trellis because these are the trellises that I'm making for my garden, but this is so versatile that I've used it in many different ways to make very simple and effective trellises. I want to show you two other ways that you can convert this in a trellis with a minimum time of materials. The first is my favorite and it is an arch-shaped trellis. It's the first trellis I put up. on our original farm about six years ago and it's still my favorite, it's an arch trellis, I would basically drive in 40 posts right here.

I have two, but I'll show you how you can do it. You would have one here, one here and two more up here, then take this wire but leave one side of the T-post and pull it over to the other T-post now, like I said, you would have another T-post here and one here to hold them together in the front and then you just connect the posts, it's that simple and you can grow so many different crops that appear over these trails, so there is an option to use these livestock panels. I'll show you the next one, the next one is literally driving there. these two posts and connect this cattle panel to them, then you can have one at each end with a few extended in the middle, you can make them 16 feet long, whatever length works best for you and you can have them start right at base. or if you have a crop like tomatoes that's going to grow quite tall, you can even wire them up to a foot tall at 18 inches, so you can do it a couple different ways in our garden this year.
I'm making these trellises. I like to have an edge. around the trellis not only does it have a nice finish but it prevents this center from wobbling and becoming flimsy, depending on what you are growing now, over time it will be completely covered in crops, so seeing this border over here won . It doesn't really matter, but I think it helps a little with the structure. I also like to use redwood to frame these trellises so if you are interested in this design I will add a link to that video in the description below as it said the height of these panels ranges from 3 feet to 5 feet and possibly more , but virtually all of them come in a 16-foot length, so you can leave a full length if you have long beds or cut it to work.
For you, my beds are 10 feet long, so I'm going to cut this in half and make 8 foot panels with bolt cutters like these, which are my preferred tool for cutting these panels, but you can also use a saw to metals or an alternative. saw or a cutting wheel for the frame. I'm using 3/4 inch conduit tubing. This is an 8 foot long section with male threads on each end that will go along the top. I also have a 10 foot section with male threads. on each end, but I'm going to cut this one in half, so I have 5 foot posts on each end and I'm going to connect them with 3/4 inch galvanized elbows with female threads and I'm going to hold it all together with some wire.
I will cut this 10 foot conduit tube in half to make 2 5 foot sections for the side posts again. There are a few different options on how to make this cut and if you only have one, a hacksaw will work perfectly fine, but if you have Schipper is a joke, that will work even better and if it has a cutting disc, that's my number one recommendation, Just make sure you wear eye protection when using them because they throw a lot of hot metal sparks so I have my 8 foot tube on. At the top, my 5 foot pipes on the sides and I'll join them together with this 3/4 inch galvanized elbow and screw them all together by hand.
I will then use metal wire to attach the cattle panel to its frame. You can also use zip ties but I would only recommend them for a temporary trellis because over time those plastic zip ties will break and eventually fail, wiring can be done with some needle nose pliers like this one but if you have access to all the tools, I like to use vises to twist the wire. Wire cutters to cut the wire and channel locks to press it. Next, I have two 4 foot pieces of rebar that I will drive into the bed to anchor the trellis.
Here's the real challenge, let's see if I can place this here myself, all right, success. I usually like to put our trellises in these beds before planting anything, but I had a lot of projects this year so I was a little late anyway, these cucumbers are. I'm going to go to the top of this trellis in no time and I still have a couple more trellises to make, but that's it for this video, so if you have any questions about how I built this trellis or any other questions about the trellis, don't hesitate to do it. to ask them in the comments below if you liked this video, please like it and if you want to see more videos like this, please subscribe, happy gardening everyone.
