How I Visualised My Dreams Into Reality | Maria Rahajeng | TEDxYouth@SWA

Jun 02, 2021
Growing up, I was always a visual person. I grew up with a visual learning style. This meant that he preferred to see something on a blackboard rather than have the teacher say it in his own words and he preferred to read something from a book rather than listen to it. I have also read that visual learners, among other things, are known for being very quiet and shy, two of us love to doodle and draw when we are bored and three of us love to make lists and plans for the future. Now that I'm growing up I would say I'm all of the above I was so quiet and shy I actually loved going to school and was a good student but I had a hard time speaking in class and I especially hated public speaking so something I'm doing right now speaking in front of a large group of people which was not my thing at all, I hated all that attention towards me and I was very nervous and I would forget everything I was about to say and I would embarrass myself in front of everyone now I also loved drawing and drawing I especially loved fashion design and I did this every day I was obsessed with fashion I took home all the fashion magazines and looked at all the beautiful models and photo shoots and that transported me to a different world and

reality

completely different now to the third point I love making lists and plans for the future I didn't actually write down what I wanted to be when I grew up, but I drew what I wanted to be when I grew up and I would call this my dream board.

I want to talk specifically about a dream board I made when I was 16, but before that, what exactly is a dream board? Well, a dream board or vision board is a collage of pictures, images and affirmations. of one's

dreams

and desires designed to serve as a source of inspiration and motivation and to use the law of attraction to achieve these goals Now that I am 16 years old, this is approximately what I drew. I wanted to work in the fashion industry. I had a passion for fashion written on it and I wanted to have my own house to travel the world and I wanted to become a television presenter, so I drew myself with a microphone now that I was 16, I never gave it a million thoughts. of years. that any of these things would come true, but I put that picture in my room and I looked at it regularly and by looking at these

dreams

and these affirmations daily, I would eventually change my life because I learned that change begins. with yourself, start from within and when you are looking to try this dream board, you know that there are specific questions that you need to ask yourself now beforehand.

I would also like to mention that what I love about this dream board is that it starts with you, it starts and ends completely with you, not with what your parents want you to do, not with what your superiors want you to do, but with what you want to do now. These are important questions to ask yourself and what I asked myself, how do you visualize your life? Do you want to achieve in life what inspires you, what motivates you? Because at the end of the day, before we start achieving anything in life, we must first have the courage to dream and visualize it, now coming back to the definition of a dream board it also talks about the law of attraction.

I'm a big believer that what we think about every day, our thoughts, what we focus on, are all things that help us achieve what we want in life, the ability to achieve things. In other words, if we focus on the good, then positivity will come and if we focus on the bad, negativity will come because the law of attraction is one of the most powerful laws in the universe. because it happens every day, it happens every second and it is happening right now, we are all in control and we create our realities with each and every one of our thoughts, in other words, whether consciously or unconsciously, we are all creating our future. each and every one of our thoughts now, please keep that in mind, keep in mind the power of visualization and the power of the law of attraction.

This is what I had in mind when I was 16 years old. I wanted to work in television. I wanted to have my own house, travel the world and I wanted to work in the fashion industry, so I let this vision guide me in my life and career, so the following year, when I was 17, I went on Mi dad and I told him that I wanted to study fashion design and at that time fashion design courses did not offer a degree and in my dad's eyes this was a big no-no, he immediately said no, he said you have two options. or become a doctor or a lawyer and as you can see he was a very Asian father, very typical, but I decided to defend myself and I said no because there was not a single fiber in my body that wanted to become a doctor or a lawyer, so I decided to stand my ground and this affected our relationship.
We didn't talk for about a month and I felt complete disappointment in his eyes and that didn't feel good at all, but at the same time. I knew I didn't want to give up on my dream and I didn't want to give up on my vision, so I decided to stick with it and miraculously one day he decided to commit and said, "Okay, you don't have to convert." a lawyer or a doctor, but you have to study something that will give you a degree, so I said, well, I can work with this and I decided to study broadcast journalism in the hope that maybe one day I would become a writer and work in the fashion media industry and hopefully become a TV presenter like I always wanted so that's exactly what I did and that's how I experienced my college years and this is the period where I really came out of my shell and changed .
I tried new things, I took a lot of risks and for all you college or university students out there, I guess my number one advice to all of you is to try as many things as possible, even if you think they're no good. or if it's not for you or you think you're going to fail, just try it because you never know what you will like and what you won't like and this is the time for you to try new things and one of the experiences that really did that for me was when I tried out from this campus of my university so this was basically like a contest except college style and at first I didn't want to try it at all because I thought it wasn't for me it was completely out of my comfort zone.
I was going to completely fail and just embarrass myself and I just listed all the things why I can't do it, but luckily at that time my twin sister was also in the same university and she forced me to join, she forced me to join and so I did , and that experience really opened my eyes to what I was capable of doing and I thought, "Okay, maybe I'm good at that, maybe I enjoy this kind of thing and that." It really had an impact on me and that had a change in me that led to other opportunities and by the way, I won Miss Campus, which was crazy for me, but I ended up getting another opportunity, which was Miss Indonesia, and I tried. .
And I won that in 2014 and I had the opportunity to represent Indonesia at Miss World 2014 in London, which was an amazing experience and again, it was a life-changing experience and I really realized that I was coming out of my shell. . I gained more confidence. I had a voice on a platform I could use to make better change and that led me to another opportunity. That led to my first job as a TV presenter, so my TV presenter audition was the first one I fully did. I failed, I failed, I went in and forgot everything I was going to say and basically embarrassed myself again and failed, but I didn't let that stop me and I tried and I tried again and I finally got my first job as a TV presenter. a fashion show yes, I was hosting a fashion show and it was great, I learned a lot and it was a big milestone for me and that led me to another opportunity, so in 2015 my sister Elizabeth, she also works in the fashion industry , had a chance. to go to new york fashion week and at that time the television network the media partner was e news asia for those of you who don't know e-news is a network based in the US and they also have one here in Singapore and basically We grew up watching e-news, it was our dream network to work for but unfortunately at that time they weren't looking for any new anchors so we had to wait and it was like a back and forth of meetings and just There were a lot of doubts here and there, but Elizabeth approached them with the idea of working with Indonesia for the first time and having twin hosts herself and I, so we prayed that they would be interested in the idea and they said, "Okay, you should." . send your audition tape and that's exactly what we did and again we prayed and prayed and prayed and finally we got the call, we got the call from the producer and he said we're taking you both to Singapore.
Her first job is We present Singapore Fashion Week for e-news asia and the first person you will interview is the iconic fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg and our jaws dropped, we couldn't believe it, we were so excited we flew to Singapore and the rest. It was history, now I want to go back and show you my dream board, do you remember me? I drew myself with a microphone as a television presenter, but what I didn't tell you was that when I was 16 I drew the iconic logo for e news and seven. Years later, that dream came true and we became the first Asian e-news anchors in Indonesia.
Now we not only focus on TV hosting but we also focus on creating content on Instagram and for our website and in 2016 we were presented with the opportunity to write our first book for agra media, which we took and after Two years of writing and creating this book and almost killing each other many times, we published our first book in 2018 titled Becoming Unstoppable and this was another example for me of how I could use my voice and my platform to make a life change. from someone and that is something I will never take for granted now, look back on the journey and what I have been through and all the ups and downs, there was always one constant in my life which was the practice of visualization.
I've always had a dream board since I was 16 years old. I had one when I was 18 and up in high school and college and even now as an adult and I want to share with you my dream board. in 2018. this is what it looked like, as you can see, I printed images from the website and also for magazines, but I want to focus on the top half of my dream board, as you can see in the top left corner there is a Woman who is enjoying of a wonderful, beautiful hot air balloon in Cappadocia, Turkey, and in the middle there are pictures of Liverpool, which is my favorite football team, and he dreams that one day I go to Anfield and watch a match and they win the trophy, and then he goes on . in the right corner are the words buy a house and there are keys, pictures of the keys to a house and since then in 2018, I went to Cappadocia and took that amazing hot air balloon ride and it turned out to be one.
One of the most incredible trips of my life last year I ended up going to Anfield for the first time and watching a Liverpool match in person live with my sister and it was incredible and after 30 years without winning the league this year 99.9 are going to win, but yes, are there any Liverpool fans? Yes, for football fans, you know what I'm talking about and finally last year, after a lot of work, saving and prayer, we bought our first house. Now these are just examples, no. It doesn't matter how big or small your dreams are, it doesn't matter as long as you believe in them, as long as you believe in yourself and work hard until that dream becomes a

reality

, because guess what happens if you can visualize yourself achieving something.
Will you do it now if you don't go home today and make your own dream board? I hope you at least take the time to close your eyes and visualize some of those dreams and goals you want to achieve. just imagine it as vividly as possible with as many details as possible and maybe it could be graduating from your dream college or getting that dream job you always wanted to do or starting that business you were always so afraid to start or even just seeing to your favorite artist in concert with a friend or make a change in someone's life or help a loved one help a friend whatever that change is, I wish you would visualize it and visualize it regularly until it becomes a Now I know that when there's something we really want to achieve or there's a dream we really want to happen in our lives, it's so easy to think of all the ways it's not going to happen or that we're not good at it. enough or it's too big a dream to come true and what tends to happen is that all this negative space becomes so big that we even fail before we even try and that's one of the worst things that could happen so I would love Los I see everyone just before we think about all that negative space.
How about we focus on all the ways we are going to make that dream a reality? How hard are they going to work? What sacrifices are they willing to make and what risks? Are you willing to take so that at the end of the day all that positivity overcomes that negative space? Now, when someone tells me "Be the change," which is today's wonderful topic, I alwaysremember the notion that any change we wish to see in this world must always start with us because if there is one thing I have learned on my journey it is that every time we change when our perspective changes when our mind changes our mindset when our vision changes everything changes our life changes now I would like to finish this talk and I leave you all with a quote from the book that my sister and I wrote becoming unstoppable and it goes like this: visualize what you want and then pursue it with everything you have. because if you can imagine it then you can imagine it and if you can imagine it then you can create it and that will lead you to become that, thank you.
