How I Used To Do My Makeup vs. Now

May 29, 2021
Hello James Charles sisters and welcome back to channel 22, jumping right into today's new video. I'm very excited but also nervous about this video. This is something I've wanted to film for a long, long time and this is how I

used

to do my

makeup

compared to how I do it now, this trend has already been around for quite a while so this is definitely not an original idea. A few years ago people were talking about how I did my

makeup

in high school versus the challenge now, which was so fun to look back on and everyone's transformations, and I even made a video a few months ago where he reacted and recreated my first tutorial of makeup and even though I've only been in the beauty community doing makeup for about three years.
how i used to do my makeup vs now
I will definitely say that my makeup has changed a lot, I hope it's for the better. I mean, I literally

used

to have Sharpie eyebrows that took up half my fucking forehead and a man bun that was literally a rat's nest. Off the top of my head over the past three years, I will confidently say that this is definitely not my style, makeup tips, techniques, and products I used today that I thought would be so fun to put my face in half. and do a little beauty battle with myself basically when you literally have no one with a watch and do half my face like I used to do makeup with all the old techniques and products and the other half of my face like I do.

More Interesting Facts About,

how i used to do my makeup vs now...

Today look at the comparison, see that everything has changed and hopefully you guys will learn some tips and techniques on what not to do along the way, so without further ado, let's take a trip down memory lane and jump right in. I described it on my Instagram for several minutes. I literally have PTSD from looking at some of these disgusting photos, but I came across this look that was posted on May 14, 2016 and is titled tangerine. I feel like for the old half of my face, it is very good luck to do it today and it encompasses all the techniques that I used to use and now don't use for obvious reasons, it has to be the hardest contract ever seen in my entire life, my eyebrows occupy my forehead, I'll say and pat myself on the back. 2/3 scrolling down through all these icky looks, the only thing I was never horrible at was eyeshadow, everything else has improved considerably but I was always pretty decent and shut up mentally so my part makeup routine favorite is definitely just a super simple and glam eyeshadow look, the inside of my winning mosaic goes out.

I don't even think I have a lash on my nose, it's not even close to the contour and my lips are lined normally and this was before I did anything to them so you get the picture, I think this is the perfect look to recreate today and, Although it's pretty simple, I think there will be some very dramatic changes from one side to the other and I hope to be able to show you a lot. of really useful tips and techniques, so let's get started right away, so the first step of a makeup routine is of course always to prep the skin, now on the old side.
how i used to do my makeup vs now
I'll go straight to the benefits. Porefessional primer and no moisturizer and literally nothing beforehand. I used to be obsessed with these things. I would use most of it. This primer for me is one of the main reasons that started my conspiracy theory that primers do absolutely nothing because this primer actually hurt my skin, more than it actually helped. I'll go in as far as the nose goes and a little bit not on the newer side of my face. First I'm going to remove the top with water cream. This is my favorite moisturizer of all time and a good moisturizer is very important for me before I put on makeup, I appreciate that my skin stays hydrated and very healthy throughout the day and can breathe under eight ounces of product, obviously, like You can see, I'm having a really bad breakout on this side of my face right now.
I'm not exactly sure why I've been traveling a lot recently, and of course I've taken extra precautions to make sure my skin stays healthy, but we won't take that into consideration when the final judgment comes later. thanks for all the way, don't always pry them now when I do skincare is of course my number one priority and that means I usually use Itachi's campus primer, whatever you fancy is also very appropriate today because, like the Porefessional, this one is obviously meant to fill everything out and make it very uniform, so hopefully we're going to flatten out these grains that we normally have.
Next I would go straight to the foundation, but in old makeup we actually have a few more steps left before that, so I'm going to let the foundation stay on the new side and right now we're going to the moon and a color crisis using the LA girl Pro concealer in the literal orange shade, so obviously I'm a guy. and I have a 5 o'clock shadow which is actually very inconvenient. I'm getting laser hair removal all over my face to get rid of it because I absolutely hate it but now I just use a full coverage foundation and a lot of concealer to cover it up to get rid of it using 87 different products on my face but back then that wasn't the case , so you're basically going to put this everywhere your hair grows.
Apparently I was convinced I was getting high every time I put on makeup and I was going to combine that by using my Beauty Blender in the next step. I can't believe I ever did it, but if you go back to my early YouTube videos, it's definitely not there when I started doing makeup. I always had a major problem. I would put on foundation, they would always slide completely off my nose and leave little holes and cracks and look gross. Whatever I was trying to know is an outline. I was so convinced it was the oils and my nose that I was literally sweating all day. but then I found out, once I was informed, that it was actually the Porefessional primer that didn't really work together with a foundation that I always used and that's why I also stopped using this combination, but at some point I finally found a trick. to fix that and I showed you in my videos if anyone remembers literally from day one and that was using a Mac Paint Pot and literally putting a huge layer of that on my nose before putting any foundation on and the logic was that if the foundation that it fell asleep when i tried to contour there would be another extremely thick layer underneath absolutely ridiculous.
I couldn't really tell you why to try a new foundation or foundation, it never crossed my mind as a normal human being, but this trick did work. The trick for quite some time. I'm going to leave my Paint Pot out because we'll be using it later in the news when it comes to eyeshadow, but now it's time to move on to a firm base in the old town. I'm going to grab the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD bar in the shade and why now, at three to five, if you've been here since day one, you would know that this was literally my ride or die on the Holy Grail.
I want to say that I really really like this foundation and its formula. If you watched Amaya finding the perfect foundation shade video from a few weeks ago, there's literally one of my top contenders and a ton of comments that you really liked. This color on me, but when I moved to Los Angeles it was a little too dry for my skin and I obviously moved on to Born This Way, which made what I'm going to wear on the other side of my face. I'm going to start blending this in and using my morphe Emma brush for 3:9 whose trainer is pointing to a 10% discount that has never changed.
I can already tell that this color is too yellow for me. I would always just use one foundation. right on top of the color corrector too and then always being really upset and confused because I would get hate comments telling me I look orange. Let's finish now on the newer side of my face. I'm going to use Too Faced Born This Way foundation. and for today's look I am going to mix the tone of pure and natural beige. The Tassel foundation has a little more medium coverage, but it's buildable and I like this formula a lot more because it's more hydrating and keeps my skin looking good. healthy all day unlike Kiki and I'm just borrowing this and using the new Jeffrey's RX morphe sponge for contouring and highlighting, of course my camera stopped recording for a few seconds, sorry guys I'm back, right? it really would be a James Charles Video without technical difficulty not following Obviously it was going to be corrector getting back to things.
I beat it back in the day as the LA girl Pro concealer in the shade porcelain, literally the lightest shade they have. Actually I don't have anything. It is bad to say about this concealer, the formula is really a bomb and it is also a mistake of the sellers. I just wanted to go ahead and try different formulas, so on the new side I use the Too Faced Born This Way concealer in the shade vanilla. Same thing using a Beauty Blender. I want to move on to the next series pretty quickly because no matter what foundation I couldn't seal and what foundation I'm using on my face, if I don't work quickly, I go very, very crazy. and crunchy pretty quick, so I'm going to grab the Cody heirs of the dust on the old side of us, do you guys know this dust has been with me since day one?
I love this one in this exchange for me very, very well when I was looking. in New York, but this is also the dust that created a klaustreich. Mary definitely made me look very, very kinky because she was using too much, but that's the whole point of learning and improving as an artist, so I'm just going to take a powder puff and wet it right in, pack this instead. I can't believe he used to do that literally to the other side of my face. I'm going to grab the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder and I'm going to use my Beauty Sponge to melt this into the skin just to give you a slightly lighter coverage look.
I really like to use the same damp beauty sponge to push the powder into the skin. I'm not really sure why I made this change, but I'm so glad I did it because I would like to make this a much better job for us, still, putting everything in its place so it doesn't slip during the day, but it will It looks much more natural when you are up close. I don't get the same kind of yucky, cakey, dry texture that you can sometimes get using a hunter blade. I just like it, it actually holds up a lot better, so it'll take a little bit of extra powder on a fluffy brush and it'll just go away.
I went over everything to make sure everything is nice and in place and that I haven't missed any areas. Now that both halves of my face are in place, the next step in my routine will of course be to contour and chisel everything. How about dementia, but before I do that on the new side, I want to go ahead and give myself a quick spritz of Morphe Preppin fixative, spray it on just to melt everything together and this is not something I used to do before. so I'm going to leave my palette up here to separate it.
I don't know if you can fully see it on camera, but looking in the mirror, this side of my skin definitely looks a little more radiant. see the skin and pop through it, which I really like, while this side is still really beautiful, it's super covered and it's very, very matte, so it really depends on what kind of look you choose now for contouring palette to use. For everyday use it was the Kat Von D Shadow and Highlight Palette and I'm not going to lie, it had a really Bond formula and I loved it for a long time, but unfortunately I no longer have it in my collection and I refused to go buy it. and support her, so I'm going to use the anasazi contour kit and I'm going to be a little bit harsher than usual, I'm going to grab my morfe.
I'm a four on my brush and I'm going to dip it right there in the middle tone and just go to the right. There I used to be obsessed with getting as contoured as possible and I'm really not even sure why my cheekbones and jawline are already pretty defined to begin with. I really just wanted that moment like the chiseled jawline which really didn't do it. Honestly, even looking at it didn't seem ridiculous, but we're going to recreate it today for the sake of the video. I'm going to use even more to contour my forehead. I mean, honestly, this hasn't changed much because I definitely still feel insecure about the science, but I'm much better at making it look smoother and blending it in while turning it down a bit.
Now you're probably thinking, "Well, James, that seems crazy, let's go to the other side and Believe me, I think he would be the same, but 2016 James wouldn't, because one thing I loved to do was after the doors of my car were already on, I would take a smaller fluffy brush and dip it into an even darker contour shade and just get you there a little bit more and just go right into the absolute hollow of my cheekbone and just go down a. little more. Well now maybe it was a little too much and I never really looked at it.
Now I'm going to the exact same thing. Well, it's not exactly the same line, but you get the point and to start. with the same color, I'm going to go in and contour the other side, but I'm just going to apply a little bit of eyeliner keeping this brush dry between the sideburn and the ear and I just blend this slightly downward and in circular motions, keeping it very, very light and soft, pulling just a little bit on the top of my forehead and also under my jawline and then I'll take a Tama 5 to 7 brush and dip it into this. shadow and next to it, which is a little bit more of a tan and caramel type of color and I'm going to use this to go slightly over that contour color just to blend the natural skin tone and the contour without it looking too harsh , I'm going to quickly apply some maca blush in the shade of peaches and a lot more video for brush, you guys already know this. The blush is my all time favorite, but I'm just going to put it on the new side because literally I hated blush and started wearing makeup and never guaranteed it.
I really don't know what I was missing because it looks very pretty and youthful but well I guess you have some alarm and now we move on to one of the most important parts of my makeup routine which is the contour of my nose now if you have been following me from day one I'm sorry First of all because my nose looked really bad and all my Instagram photos because I didn't know how to contour and even when I was learning how to contour it was still a really real process at first I couldn't understand how to do it . the illusion so it just looked bad, but then I learned how to do it, then I learned how to photoshop and facetune to make it look so fake to the point I couldn't even breathe and now, several years later, I'm finally in a place where I'm confident. with my nose and my photographs and photos.
I've stopped erasing everything and editing apps, but I definitely still squirm quite a bit, so first I'm going to take my contour brush and dip into the exact same contour palette. on the old one today I'm going to take the same contour color and a lot too and I'm going to go right to the edge of my nose oh my God, this is causing a breakout with that shape up, this hurts. This hurts a lot now if you really like the way your nose looks naturally made up of course this tab doesn't really matter but for me personally I've always had a much narrower nose so I'm going to take the exact the same contour color once again, but instead of putting it on the absolute edge of my nose and going around the bulb, which makes it look very, very wide, I'm going to focus this color on the top of the bridge of my nose and pretend to that bowl, but the tip isn't there, just go over it, straightening it out, which gives the illusion of a straighter, tighter nose, I'll just do it, another quick spray of a trim, let's say before I move on to baking , what happens next. for, let's try it again, a little urban decadence this time, then we'll add a little more Kody or a little powder and a baking puff.
I used the setting powder here, it just goes down and then I take everything out. to the back of my head, I have no idea why and then right in the center of my forehead and then just using laura mercier on the other side. I'm going to bring this powder up to the side of my nose to take it and create that illusion and then keep it focused just below my eyeball in this little triangular area. I'm so excited to tell you that for the eyebrow portion of today's video I'm part with Bonifacio Beverly Hills, that's right to show you.
Guys, your new dip brow gel and how I like to use it and also how I necessarily recommend using it if you've been around since day one, you probably use James and Charles brick Sharpie brows now at that time. I love them. Few people on Instagram love them, but for the most part they weren't disgusting and everyone made fun of them all the time, including the Anasazi Queen of Beverly Hills herself, who tried to get me to destroy them all and I literally looked at her. face and said absolutely not, can you say ego?, they had no arc towards them at all, in fact, they almost didn't believe I was frowning half the time, they literally took up half of my forehead and my thickness and They also had a note to mention that they were all one color, straight like dark brown, almost blocked at all times, three years later, after a lot of hate comments, bullying, tweezers and practice, I finally had a place where I actually I loved my eyebrows, so let's compare the old with the new.
Instead, I'm going to grab my Anasazi brow in the dark brown shade and my honest living Newburgh 7b brush and I'm just going to dive into the palette right here and grab quite a few things that I normally like. first take this all the way up and go up just to get the shape of the eyebrow, but I'm actually going to use the spoolie and brush them out this way to kind of have a plane in the mouth since I definitely tweezed. on my eyebrows over the last few years and I'm going to start right from the front of my eyebrow, which I never recommend doing anymore and just draw a line, kiss, I really use, it all fits together every day and then at the last second.
Downwards carving a little more with the same brush at an angle. I'm just going to draw on the tail of my eyebrow. I go from top to bottom and then easy whatever is left, which is apparently a lot, oh my God, can't you? Look, we feast every day and I never thought there was anything wrong with that, like it was enough. Now I'm going to take the new Anasazi brow gel and apply it on top. Now listen, actually I will. Use it until you guys want this product today because it's really cool, this is a super super penguin, a new full coverage waterproof brow gel, but it can also be used as the sketch and dip brow dark C hairs and actually. the strange hairs in their place.
I've personally loved using this on myself before I even draw anything and also on my friends who don't have as many browsers because it does a really good job of drawing ahead of time and thus making you look natural, but like I said. This is a very, very pigmented product, so if you go for this block, which I wouldn't recommend, you could just go in and push that product right there to get the original James Charles Sharpie brow. Luck will grab a little more of LA. Girl Pro Concealer and I'm going to press it on the back of my hand and then she gave me a morphe.
I'm a brush four times, it'll clean it up a little bit, no one gets inside my face now. thank goodness, I'm going to grab Anastasia's eyebrow that's in a medium brown shade to start using it completely and I'm just going to brush all of her hair, up and then in. I'll start lightly. in the middle of my eyebrow, draw just little hair-like strokes at the bottom, just a little bit of dimension, then just follow the natural shape of my actual brow bone and going above that will bring that line up creating an arch that is flattering for human faces and then when I get to the tail I'm just going to pull that line out instead of down, going back in with this bully each time too to make sure nothing becomes too much intense or dark.
I'm just going to fill that queue. I don't think the lady has shown up in a second, but I'm pretty happy with the shape so far. I'm not going to use the new Anasazi wet brow gel again, but this time I'm going to use the soft brown color, which is then my natural brow color, like I said, this product has very full coverage. , so for someone like me who likes defined brows but doesn't want to look like that, I like to use a very light, lighter shade and use this brow gel to set everything in place while adding a little extra color, but not much.
The great thing about brow gel is also that it, of course, sets. and set your hairs in place, but the drying time is a little bit slower, so I'm going to grab another clean brow brush, this is number 12, and I just go in and use the excess brow gel, which is any hair that uses this. to lightly blend the product towards the front of the brow and then use the same brush simply making small upward strokes to mimic the look of hairs and areas that are a little sparser now that the new Rajal tip is smudge proof. smudges, so it's definitely not going anywhere, but I want to go ahead and clean it up a little bit, so I'm going to apply my full concealer one more time and then just a rounded concealer brush and I'm going to go to the right.
Go in and really make sure it's super clean, okay sisters, and both eyebrows are full, go ahead and take your screenshots. I've handled bullying once I can do it again, let's be grateful that there has been a huge improvement from the last three. years here of course we have the original James Charles Sharpie and Brick brows and on the side we have the new and improved Snatch Brow sister, both created with the new Anasazi brow gel that will keep your brows waterproof, smudge-proof stains and looking Absolutely fantastic all day long, if you guys want to check this out it's releasing online at Anasazi Beverly Hills quietly and in stores on March 7th and retails for $18.
I would totally recommend it for a long time and never I want to experiment. That again, so I'm going to move right into the next set of my routine, which of course will be the eyeshadow now for the eyeshadow base once again, for the third time in this video. I'm going to go to LA girl Pro concealer in porcelain tone and I'm going to go in and paint this on the lid, this is what I used to do on every look of my makeup and then I'm just going to blend this and I'm going to put that foundation on your place using a little bit more Kody Air so I'm packing a dent with powder and then for the other side I'm going to grab my Mac Paint Pot once again for a slightly different use this time and I was going. to put a generous layer of this right on top of my eyelid and I am NOT going to put this on with any chance of setting the powder.
Well, you guys created this warm toned smoky area that I had in the original photo. Of course, I'm going to take the iconic James Charles As I said before, the only thing I didn't have that much trouble with was the eyeshadow, of course, I even tried my techniques and got better at blending, but anyway, I've come across many deterrent videos on eyeshadow techniques, so I'm I'm I'm going to cut quickly, I'm still going to use the techniques that I would have used in the verses now and I'll come back and show you the finished look and I'll move on to the neck, okay sisters, we're back and I just completed the eye shadow. both eyes off camera quickly as you can see the looks are a little bit different because I wanted to recreate the look exactly on this eye it's just a little mid cut crease moment in warm tone and it looked like it was a matte shade on the lid and on this side I liked a modernized version if I were to do a half fold in warm tone, this is what I think, just orange and brownie tones and pulled out in a nice way and then a metallic. glitter right on the lid, a little messy, Li placed it just so it reflects in the light and looks incredibly worn out, but anyway I think both eyes with different styles and techniques still look really very beautiful, that being said, the next step of both eyes.
The look is a winged eyeliner, although drawing a winged eyeliner has never changed on me. I definitely learned a lot about where I like to place my wing, probably the worst part about having thick eyebrows, other than the hate comments, was the lack of eyeshadow. it really gave me space to work with and at the time I obviously didn't know it, but when the eyebrows take up half of the eye region and then arch downwards, it really cuts off a lot of this outer area that I hadn't liked. to use for blending really big eyeshadows, so when I had to draw winged eyeliner when I first started, I didn't really have much room to do it, so the only mistake I made all the time was drawing my wings straight.
Don't get me wrong, drawing your wing straight can be a really useful technique, in fact, my sisters who have a hundred eyes, it's the best way to put on winged eyeliner and make sure it really shows, but for me, As someone who doesn't have a hundred eyes, sticking the wing out might tend to direct the eye downwards and, especially with an eyebrow that doesn't have any arches, doesn't really help on this side. I'm gonna throw. the eyeliner much more upwards in the same way I drew my eyeshadow and just like the eyeshadow, they are two completely different techniques and styles.
I honestly think they both look really, really good. This wing turned out better than I honestly anticipated. but I definitely still prefer a wing that is much more raised. I just think it really makes it look a lot more ripped and brings it to life, whereas this one seems a little more debt-ridden and basic, in my opinion, moving forward. I'm going to give my lashes a nice curl on both sides and then I'm going to apply a thick coat of Benefit Roller Lash Mascara on the old side and then on the newer side I'm going to add a light coat of Mac Extended Play Mascara.
Now, as for the eyelashes, I'm zooming in on this photo and it looks like I don't have any. I'm not exactly sure, but to begin with, I naturally have pretty long and thick eyelashes, so,Honestly, I may not have used them. Considering that when I first started doing makeup, I literally couldn't put on lashes without gluing my eyes shut, so I guess today I'll skip that on this side of the eyes, but on this side I'm going to put Lily's lashes on Las Miami's extra mystical chains offer a 50% discount on your purchase. Alright guys, those are bullfighters, they all look beautiful and fabulous on both sides.
Let's go ahead and dust off the beat because this dust has been in my face for a while. it's literally too long so let's do it and now it's time to turn on our glow and what's so crazy is we're actually going to use the same product on both sides of my face and that's the Anasazi Beverly Hills it's so Hollywood Highlighter This is literally the first highlighter I bought and I have used it since day one. I love this two-tone color that works really well with my skin tone. I still use it every time I put on makeup clearly, as you can see it has seen better days. but it is still working like new, many of you know that when it comes to applying a highlighter or metallic shadow using its brush head, a little setting spray can really make the color pop now that I used to apply henna dye for a long time.
A while ago I would do what you are not supposed to do, which is basically soak the brush first, this is the morphe m5o, and then dip it well into the pan, this applies a very very blinding and metallic shine, this can negatively affect the formula in the pan because you're basically adding setting spray and water to the mix where it wasn't intended, also when you apply highlighter it can look really beautiful but it can also look super streaky, this may not look so bad on the camera. but in person this looks absolutely ridiculous. I know everyone loves a good shine and believe me, I do too, but it's not flattering.
I also used to do Instagram photos and a foundation, but using just a corkscrew, so I actually used to have a major problem. make my highlight reflect for some reason and I think that's probably why I used the Settings button highlighter so much before, but anyway let's go in and highlight the other side and make it look nice and pretty, the way to do it now It's like that. I'm going to take my setting spray, but instead of spreading my brush first, I'm going to spray my face well one more time to melt all the powder together, but also to give us a little bit of moisture for the highlighter to adhere to and this time I'm going to use the Emma 504 brush, which is a little smaller than the Emma.
I'm going to dive into it. Again I saw that the Hollywood highlighter was going on quite a bit there and I was going to apply this directly to the top of the cheekbone keeping it more intense here and then just using the excess filter on the brush to blend it out much prettier in my opinion and then will take a little bit of the face of my palette and add it right on top, oh that. It looks so pretty, a little sparkly glitter that grabs a little more of the face on that same brush. I was going to tap it off so there's not a lot of product there and first I'm going to pop a little bit right above my brow bone. little highlight here and then also a little bit on the top of the chin as well as my nose Haley has never changed just carving the I'm at 4:31 and a little bit more face on the end of that brush, I'm just I'm going to draw a straight line right in the center and then a little dot at the tip for my little explanation on the dot.
Okay guys, without highlighter and going to Picard, we can go ahead and move on to our last step, which is to be the lips, so for both sides of the lips today I'm going to use the ofra liquid lipstick in the shade that ass . This is another one of those products that I've been using since day one and I literally haven't found a better version, although I really really like the ofra liquid lipstick formula. The photo was taken a few years ago. A full disclosure. I did my lips, it was a personal choice of mine. It's been over a year since I actually made them.
They're definitely going down a lot though, but they're still not as small as they were in this picture, so I'm going to go ahead and apply this lipstick on the old side of the makeup and I'm not going to do that. Over the line literally in the slightest bet and then on the newer side, I'll go slightly outside of my lip line for a fuller look and finally we're finishing on both sides a little bit of a sister, a setting spray to set. everything in place okay sisters and I think this is how I did my makeup before versus now it looks all complete oh my gosh guys it was so fun to take a trip down memory lane and remember all the old product tips and techniques. that I used to use a few years ago, it's only been three short years, but I'm very proud of the progress I've made from this to this.
I think both sides still look beautiful in their own way, but I can also happily admit that three years ago I came to the beauty industry with a lot of passion but also a lot of ego. I really thought I was the best, the best, I couldn't get any better, but boy did I practice badly, really, really. makes perfection and I am so grateful for everyone who saw the potential trapped in me and also left reviews and that goes for all my artist friends too, thank you all for always teaching me two new tips. and techniques that I can integrate into my routine.
Overall, thanks for inspiring me and being a really cool friend. I had so much fun making this video today and seeing how my style has changed and what's even crazier is that I'm probably going to watch this video in five years and feel sick, this looks absolutely disgusting but anyway I hope everyone You sisters stay here for the long haul and we can look back and laugh together and I can't wait to see where it is.
