How to Build a Sleeper Power Wheels! 60+ MPH

Mar 09, 2024
and that's how you tow a 7,000 pound military vehicle with a 200 pound

power

wheel with deeper

power

wheels

that look like your average bear but aren't. In five easy steps, by the end of this video you will travel more than 60 miles. an hour and towing military vehicles, let's start a small space with a lot of toys and this is one of the biggest toys in its nature, but yeah, I think it's the biggest one you've been working on full size vehicles for too long . I have to make another thumbnail, right? I think this is the largest box we have received here.
how to build a sleeper power wheels 60 mph
Could you just look at what's inside? Look, this is the biggest Power Wheel style toy you can buy on the internet and us. We're going to put that electric motor and this battery in it, which may not seem like much, but it equates to a lot more torque than a Honda 450 motor, this is like 18,000 watts of power, and more importantly, we're just plugging this into the original powertrain and let's see what happens it's a two seater look the seats are like real seats it has a metal chassis and real rubber tires they're not super sturdy but sturdy enough if we can plug some real power into it and just roast them and then, a Once we completely destroy the original chassis and transmission, you know, the axles and all that, we can

build

a better chassis for off-road purposes or whatever we decide to do, it has real feet, yeah, it looks so dumb today, no I don't know why there is a ripstick I'm not kidding, there is a handbrake which is amazing, it's my favorite thing.

More Interesting Facts About,

how to build a sleeper power wheels 60 mph...

I wonder if it can handle 80 foot-pounds of torque? I can't at all, we're going to say these

wheels

are plastic, we're definitely like we're going to have to be very gentle with the accelerator aha until we're ready for it to die because it's just for a little tear, let's see if it's for two, oh, this is really nice, it's the opposite of what I was going to say let me open the Speedo app and I'll pass it to you so we can see how fast we're going. It has an audiobook. Come on, everything's fine. No, I'm just softening it. over the bumps so as not to tear off the splitter oh, that's a very good idea, that's all, are we going to like a recordable amount of speed?
how to build a sleeper power wheels 60 mph
Wait, maybe the blue one is faster, here we go, oh yeah, zero, oh, top speed. He says and it's probably three miles an hour, I mean this feels like three miles an hour, okay let's see how fast it is without me because you're lighter than me, oh yeah, quite a bit. I'm going top speed 5.6 five, that's pretty fast. yeah I think we're about to team up, yeah I noticed this has an actual speed controller that takes DC and converts it to AC for the brushless motor. I realize we have this battery lying around, let's have a hybrid car that I just measured. and it has 66 volts.
how to build a sleeper power wheels 60 mph
I'm going to see what happens when we connect a 66 volt hybrid car battery to a 24 volt speed controller. It will probably melt all the wires, but it will be a lot of fun to find out. Oh look. all that space, lots of room for activities, this battery fits in there like it was built for that, so it's cool, this still works, something smokes on the dash, smoke from the radio is coming out of the USB port, well, give it a try beans while still running. oh yeah, it's going to work faster for me. I honestly can't believe this works at all.
We just quintupled the voltage and the speed controller says, yeah, whatever we're working on, there's a lot of smells of melted electricity, well, that was exciting. I'm glad it worked. I had no real idea if it was going to melt immediately or do nothing, but it definitely did at least twice as fast. Miraculously, we didn't set anything on fire when we hooked up something that big. battery, so I don't think we need this anymore. I have to set something on fire. That's the guide on how to

build

it. The rest of this video is Ethan's guide on exactly how to build it.
This thing has some weight. It has some dirt on it, it has a real frame, although real is a bit of a stretch, but there are some metal parts, my favorite part is the carbon fiber and the amazing thing is that it is actually a texture printed on the plastic. it's they're not printed like they're textured on the sticker it's not a sticker oh really yeah I don't know I don't see these are the valve stems I was talking about you might actually like get pressure there's our breakage, a real disc brake yes, it's actually pretty stable adjustable stays with a heim joint this is definitely the most impressive Power Wheels we've ever taken apart this is our drivetrain a plug and play setup developed by Electro and Co originally intended for conversions of electric dirt bikes that has a huge 72 volt 33 amp hour battery and combined with this custom controller and motor, can reach 80 to 90 pound-feet of torque, which is more than double that of a CRF 450.
Definitely check out their site, they have the best electric motorcycle kits on the internet. When adapting a sprocket to this shaft, what I have to do is figure out which direction this motor rotates when we turn it on with the speed controller. Yes, all of their kits are plug and play and all of their harnesses are just what you're supposed to plug in. It actually connects to itself, I noticed while playing with it a bit that it is very nice, which is a great idea since the high voltage of 70 volts is not enough to kill you, but it is still enough to hurt a lot, so yeah or set something on fire if you do, yeah, geez, that's the middle setting, you can hardly hold it.
Wow, yeah, no, that's ridiculous, my goodness, look at the torque it creates just by stopping, it really seems a shame to put this transmission in something so horrible. I think what we do is put it here until we destroy this thing and then put it in something more worthy of its power. Why did you put a bearing in that wheel? Why would you make it not spin? bearing in a wheel that doesn't spin on its axis a bunch of hustlers look it's a bearing huh it doesn't do anything looks like today is just a day of huge electric fun boxes oh it's green this thing looks so cool oh , look at the seat this is nice oh look at the headlights buddy look at these this is the 1000 watt m20e bike made by the sponsor of this video engway we will use their electric bikes to film the test ride with the Power bunk .
You roll later in this video, this actually feels like a helicopter Steven, you like it, oh yeah, I'm already liking it, there you go Stephen, this is your Chomper. I'm impressed with the traction these tires get and there's like a gradual accelerator. a dirt bike, oh that's cool, there are other electric bikes that are like a light switch that turns on or off and it's a little sketchy, but it feels nice and smooth, you won't pass. I have this one, which is a big one inch chunk. solid stock, the easiest solution here is actually to make a new axle.
I'm going to turn it down on the ends to match this size so I can use these spacers, even the brakes and more importantly the wheels and all the adaptations there because obviously we could put go kart tires underneath but that would negate the purpose of doing it with as many original Power Wheels as possible. Well, you know what I was saying, this lathe is a little worn out. Okay, okay, that's about the size. we want it to be oh no, it's doing a tapered workshop, that's not what we want, because it's long and it flexes a little bit in the middle, but that only applies when you're pushing really hard with the tool, so if you do some passes from one side to the other, it should level out, it's because the center section is used all the time and the ends are not, so here at the end everything is less worn and tighter and then here there is more slope. so it ends up like an old lathe.
Well, I'm still waiting for the power to come back so I can use the mill. I'm hitting the ends of this because that's how the wheels come together and then once the power comes. back I can take, oh, could you look at that, what are the odds? Now once I tap them in, I can put them in the middle and cut a slot so I can fit all the stuff in there and then put the bearings in. Ride it, put a chain on it and then do a rep or something, that makes it look a lot faster and easier than it is of course, but you know we'll get there.
This is really exciting. This is the first time I've done it. I used the mill to cut a groove, which is one of the main things you'd want to do with them. I have my quarter inch wrench here and this new quarter inch cutter, so now I just have to line everything up and To determine the depth, we'll just make one small pass at a time. We cut the keyways on both sides of this, which means now we can go like this and then put this there and then we can put these there and then. we can put this there, there's a lot of things that go there.
I'm going to see if you see what's wrong with this image. Well, that doesn't rotate on the bearing, it just rotates around the bearing, it's just there to keep the space, but. what they did was they made the front rear wheels with identical wheels, so they didn't have to make two different types of wheels, and then just and that bearing, all it does is center it, it could just be a piece of hub or that . it could be a piece of heavy plastic that looks more expensive to just make it bushy, it's probably a lot less expensive than making two different molds and then I have some bearings and bearing housings that I collected from our scrap piles.
I have three. options and none of them match, so you know, that's good. In today's episode of Overkill Engineering, we have a CAD file to make a quantity for these things, so you can mount this on this frame. Look, we'll even put in the right Allen wrench. Back at CE, it's crazy what happens when you get older, well it's your birthday, it's your birthday today, actually, yeah, I'm officially old so I make better decisions, wait a second, where's your phone? No, no, I've done this before putting these up. on the axle, here we are, yeah, look at that, it looks very premium and I can weld a little bit on this side and then a little bit on the back of course, I have to remove some paint first, yeah, after. time we see you with your phone in your pocket, oh no, what we're doing is installing some firewood in our car, we can reverse a bracket on the hood, now I can put the engine in there and gravity will hold it in place, oh, that's good, what's going on? right, the tires are turning that way, the ground is going this way, okay, just double check, yeah, yeah, just making sure I'm not losing control.
I have bad news for you, he is a spicy Pac-Man. I need a bigger one that's going to come to life oh wait, well this isn't Pac-Man, it's the ghost, another day, another Power Wheels, we have different sizes of sprockets, a hub and another one of these ornaments to hold that another bearing correctly, it is quite possible to carry out a test drive. later today oh that would be premium you know some burnt in the shop oh this thing needs front brakes so you can just make a brake mount and just roast the tires yeah if I grind some of the plastic below, you should be able to do so.
Turn the motor down until the chain is reasonably tight. I'm working on a secondary engine mount cutter frame reinforcement bar so that it goes from here to here under the axle and then bolts to probably two of these bolt holes here, ideally. I heard it came out whizzing thanks anyway and that doesn't really give the chain any adjustment but I'm not too worried because it's such a short chain that it will stay tight enough to work on today's episode of Extreme on Engineering , there's my motor mounting plate, that's how I enjoy life making things incredibly complicated.
This wouldn't have been a construction if it didn't have hexagons. It really wouldn't have been, you know, oh Fahrenheit, the robot is in a good mood today I was very very close to this working uh and by very close I mean Super far the problem is that I was looking at my tape with my head upside down and I read the number on the wrong side of the number, it works Excellent as a Scum Knight, so look at that thing that just fell out of there. No, I think I can make it work. Where is your phone?
Well, no, brother. I just saw you with that expression on your face. You have a small phone that you wouldn't have. Learn the difficulties of the foreign battery and watch it spin. There's also a bit of flex here simply from trying to weld structural components to a Power Wheels chassis. You can see this whole bar here, just kind of Wiggles, um, I can reinforce that, but. I just want to see how much it moves when the motor loads, it goes forward, the right ground goes from front to back, that's going to be incredibly fast, yeah, it's very loose, so I still have a little bit of flex in this bar.
So I went looking in the scrap pile and found this piece of scrap metal that is the perfect length. I put a little notched Dippy in there so I could make another one for the other sideof the engine because it just isn't getting stiff. the way I want it to be helps if you connect the air hose okay what oh no okay oh I'll do it. It's okay, to meet you and know that you are a comedian at heart. I won't do it. I swear you are doing it. I'm not doing it on purpose, I don't want to, you just want to be robbed and you want to make everyone laugh, so people, I don't want to be robbed, wait, you don't want to be robbed, I want to be. able to slide into this tight please and if you're hijacked you can't do that there are medium levels of connection look you sound so aggressive I've got a couple of little lugs I'm screwing in there so we'll mount the speed controller right there which point the cables directly towards the front where the battery is going to be a strange setup, remove these disc brakes because we don't need them and ah, I'm going to have to take it apart completely because I also have to put this on the mill and cut another shape clue. this is why I really started to enjoy this project uh a site was an excuse to use the mill a problem we're going to have like you guys will probably have to have a hex intervention for me at some point, but not yet today That works alarmingly well now, that It's what we call luck.
Look, that hexagon I made fits on the end of that bolt, oh strange, does this fit back into ultimate

sleeper

mode activated? So I have a theory here, this is the throttle we got with this kit. from Electro and Co, it is a cable operated throttle that is perfect for most situations because you can run it with anything, but I have looked at how the throttle that comes on this one comes out, it comes with a speed controller that would have worked just fine. quite similar. to this one a little bit less premium uh it has three wires coming out of its pedal that are the same color it has these three wires check out the throttle panel here yeah look it's even variable so I can slightly throttle for some awesome low speed action Complete Throttle action is fine, works great now.
I don't actually have to make a new accelerator, I can just use the one that's built in, we'll put this on a shelf somewhere, forget it, yeah, look at that, now I can access it. My brakes here are very good after a bit of frustration trying to bleed these brakes and get them working. I discovered that the master cylinder I had picked out of the box of random brake parts wasn't really working even after it had been bled. It wasn't actually pushing any fluid so maybe it's just worn out, who knows, it's a mystery piece. I found another one from a different machine that I think actually has the same mounting bolt spacing so I can use the same bracket already welded on and it has a remote reservoir so I had to look into it, we'll see if it works, it's a Brembo, so you know, and the new master cylinder works now that I have everything covered in brake fluid, including me, the brakes are done, which means all I have to do now let's find a place to mount this switch inside the uh inside there's something really fun about working on this one, like it's always fun to work on a tiny car like it's a real car, but because this one is still so much closer to that, it doesn't have anything that makes it look bigger , you know, it doesn't have a seat that's too big or an engine sticking out of the hood, it's just a tiny little car but I'm putting Brembo brakes on it, oh look that could almost be room for the battery, look man that's the biggest forward weight you're going to get, yeah, balance the motors in the back, let's see if reverse works. oh the other way around it works that's a good sign it was probably like a feather too eh well it's a little hard to smooth out but that's zero PSI on the tires yeah we should put some on they say 22 Max so We'll go to 15. or something like that seems like a good medium.
I love that they actually have air. Yes, that's very good. This is level one, don't mind me officer, I'm just cruising around in my Power Wheels toy, it's not fully modified, that sounds crazy. they're going to be great for filming electric wheels because they're quiet quickly so this is the engway M20 and it looks incredibly sweet it's also got full suspension we've got front shocks rear shocks and these huge fat four inch wide tires that you're traversing snow, sand and mud and has dual batteries that give you a range of up to 50 miles. Wow, that's a lot without pedaling.
The best thing about electric bikes like this is that if you run out of battery. You still have your Lamborghinis to pedal the disc brakes at the front and rear too and it has a seven-speed shifter for when you feel like using the pedals. It has this double headlight that lights up. Look, it has this. LCD screen here to tell you how fast you're going and select your power modes and whatnot, and it even has a taillight with a brake light so you're safe when driving around town. This post is approved by security Steve, the M20 has multiple color options, it has this super cool green color, you can also get it in white or black, click the link in our description and register for a chance to win a new set helmet and electric bicycle M20.
Anyway, it has a ton of good deals available right now, like the M20 Early Bird Price where you can get 150 off the single battery version of the bike and 200 off the dual battery version, use engway code M20 200 to get this deal, engway also sent us the Pro motor. This one folds up to fit in a smaller space like the back of your Subaru. I was about to say that you can't fit a full-size bike in a full-size car. Yes, look how much more compact it is. a high-end Porsche, okay, so this is on camera. I have the right to that bicycle.
Oh, okay, you can use that bike, but I want to try it because it looks amazing. This thing is ridiculous, so what's closer to the fast food route? or your bank, fast food and then the bank, they are both pretty close, let's do it, oh, you brought a helmet, yes, cute, yes, look, look at this Lucas, scary and ridiculous to make a quick little dragon, are you ready, ready, ready, go well, is it so fast what did I bring? duct tape always bring duct tape for the rough rides always drink duct tape everywhere you go you fall in love with a speedometer app oh yeah that's a good point foreigner I feel like we shouldn't go much faster than that until we improve the steering and the brakes. you think i would do 60. oh yeah, that wasn't it, it wasn't even close to top speed, it was just top speed to be comfortable, sorry, wait, what can I get for you?
Can I get two? regular curly fries, regular root beer, okay, that'll be your second total window, okay, thanks, you're welcome, probably boss, today we have three regular curly fries on order, seven poppers and one regular root beer, that That's right, well, 1977. Hey, always. It makes me laugh when when the number is a year there are a lot of numbers that could be that but I don't know why it always makes me laugh there you go I hope you have a wonderful day stay safe thank you yeah for favor. I just got crushed by a helmet but oh okay I wasn't even phased, that guy didn't know anything, it's like he sees these things all the time, like how many people do this without even reacting to it, I gotta to go hit. go to the bank real quick, the best part of going to the bank is a free peach and mango candy, guys you should film me running my errands more often.
I never get a chance to come into town during the week, nothing open on the weekends, premium, that was premium, man. These bikes are amazing for transporting our gear. Oh yeah, buddy, it handles well. The brakes are pretty good. I like this bike so far. I haven't crashed yet. It looks like I crashed, but I just got hot in the mud. Yes, that's my problem. I don't think you realize how fast the tires were spinning, oh they were spinning, oh did I take most of my face off? It's unbelievable and here come the police, pretend you're normal for a moment.
I'm like what you're driving. Yes, we take it through a drive-thru. We'll take it to the bank. It's faster than it looks. I mean, it's actually completely original exactly. I haven't gotten over it and I don't think I will, I'd probably hit 60. Yeah, that's too fast, okay, great, thanks to all the cops. They will not. Yes, I know it is. like he did, I said, uh, let's take the bike path home, the officer said, uh, don't put it on the streets and obviously respect his wishes, go back to the Lucas parking lot and have fun abroad, the quality of the ride leaves a little to be desired in the car on a road of the same size this is the most fun I've ever had on a mini moto just chasing me chasing you it's like I'm chasing a Porsche on a g a Moto GP this is how it feels oh Dude, if the steering was a little better on this thing, dude, I couldn't imagine it would ever go as fast as you're going now, how does it feel to go fast?
Oh, um, scary, but luckily I don't. I think my amygdala is really working, so we're fine riding our bikes behind Ethan and this scared me, this is how I'm going to die, oh, that's so much fun, oh, you'll get that, yeah, it's going to be incredibly fun, what does it feel like? . So he competes with Cary, it's crazy, yes, you accidentally hit Caster Edward, that's why he was heading better. Lucas just finished wiring that Humvee for his shop. He makes speaker systems. He remotely starts all types of wiring. Anything you can think of in SMS Auto. and Marine in Sandpoint we are going to try to tow it with this and also use it as an anchor to do some burnouts because we don't have front brakes so we need something to anchor to, how much do you think it weighs?
I don't know 100 120 pounds, maybe how much you think it weighs. Those weigh about 7,000. Do you think he'll tell us he weighs 160? So what do you think will tow it? Yes, 100, yes, approximately the most premium. thing that has ever pulled a Humvee if this thing moves that 7,000 pound vehicle. I'll be very impressed with those shrinking tires across the country for our next video limbo video part two two Humvees us four premium idiots I ask you all to ride with Ethan, thank you for a 200 pound power wheeled foreign military vehicle, which probably this is probably the first time this has happened, oh my gosh, that was amazing.
Now we have to go back and do it again, except put it in park and we'll do it. just burn these tires until they explode. I didn't really know how well it was going to work. It worked much better than I thought it could have worked. It was incredible. It got to the point where it was slowing down and it was also pulling on him. quick, gotta take pictures, that was crazy, that was probably one of the coolest things I've ever seen, honestly, really, oh Steven, is this your first time driving any of the wheel drive or the Power Wheels?
Yeah, look at all the Carnage. We've left a tough scene, this is a tough crime scene, I'm glad Lucas is here, you know, he's okay with that. I've never had one of these as GoPro bib additions, but I can't figure it out. how to get this right, it was an extremely successful and extremely fun test. The point was that this was always going to be a temporary setup and we'll upgrade to full go-kart wheels and tires later so we can pull this off successfully. We destroyed them, the only thing we really broke and that's a problem is this Fender, here it is a drift missile.
Yes, In-way bikes were the perfect support vehicle for this video. We couldn't have done it without your support, so definitely check them out below. and I think we're going to get this thing to be able to take the power with much better steering and it's going to be crazy. Shout out to Electro and company for sending us this amazing powertrain next time, let's go shopping and put something in the front, there's a lot of room here, there's a little room, so thanks to Lucas for allowing us to completely destroy his parking lot, now we have to go get some brooms and clean it up.
Wow, we did it like this. I have something new. blanks, it goes in the wallet, we go from a top speed of about five miles an hour or two, at least 50, so that's an improvement, you know, a multiple of ten, an order of magnitude, as they say, we also went from a nice shiny paint job to a bit more of an A Swindle look now it's a low pilot in the back it's a proper drift missile it's weird
