thank you good afternoon good afternoon everyone good afternoon and welcome to the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine White Coat Ceremony 2023. It's wonderful to greet you all, either in person or by joining the broadcast on alive. My name is Bernard Chang and I am the dean of medical education here at Harvard Medical School. Now the students already know this, but I will share with all of you in the audience that this is my first day as dean of medical education. Many of us at the Faculty often say that it feels like we are going on an educational journey with our students, but for me it is especially so, today will be an exciting and inspiring afternoon as we will have the opportunity to meet each and every one of they. our students for the first time before starting.

I want to start by thanking Cheryl O'Brien Carrie Sylvan and the HMS and

hsdm

student affairs staff for organizing this great event and making it all possible and I also want to thank admissions. HMS and

hsdm

offices for creating the wonderful community of students in the class of 2027 that we have before us today, it is now important to an organization that is probably unknown to most of you and that is the Aesculopian club here at HMS, the club Aesculapius is a group of alumni and teachers who help support student and teacher social events and provide us with an essential element of today's

ceremony

, which is the

white

coat

s, so thank you to this wonderful group for helping us continue with this excellent tradition year after year.

More Interesting Facts About,

Let's spend some time talking about

white

coat

s, so the white coat, as you know, is a symbol of the profession, but sometimes people outside of the medical field ask why we give them the white coats when you first come in, do you? they are not a sign of achievement, something that should only come at the culmination of a journey. Well, today we give you your white coats for reasons both philosophical and practical, both individual and collective. Philosophically the white coat is indeed a symbol of achievement. You have already achieved a lot. It's all an individual achievement for you. having made it to medical school and dental school and we are very proud of you for being here at HMS and hsdm, but in many ways your work is just beginning, so the white coat is also a symbol of aspiration, individual aspiration so it has not yet been achieved.
hms hsdm white coat ceremony
The white coat is a symbol of your aspiration to learn how to treat those in need, your aspiration to discover new ways to maintain the health of our populations, and your aspiration to share your knowledge with your colleagues and the community at large, so that In a sense, I will work hard to earn this white coat. The white coat is also a symbol of our collective achievement and our collective aspiration in the profession. Medicine as a field has accomplished amazing feats in history, including some that we have all witnessed in recent years. years in the context of a global pandemic, but we also need to be better collectively.
hms hsdm white coat ceremony
We have the aspiration and, indeed, the obligation to address centuries of racism, discrimination and inequity that have plagued our profession. We aspire to encourage and emphasize patient-centered approach. of contemporary clinical healthcare and we aim to improve the environment in which our students acquire those fundamental skills they need to become practicing doctors and dentists, so there is a lot behind the philosophy behind the white coat as a symbol of both achievements and aspirations, but we are all in a practical line of work and there is a lot of practicality behind why we give you the white coats at the beginning of your journey, as well as why in medical and dental school it is unusual among the major professional schools we learn mostly by doing, no matter how nice it is to be in the classrooms of the medical education building right there or in the newly renovated study spaces of the Countway library, at least half of your time here with us at HMS and hsdm You will be in clinical settings learning by doing, alongside other healthcare professionals who get up and come every day not because they are in school but because they are at work doing the hard work of caring for people who are sick. and in need and in our curriculum, no matter what track or what site you are in, start these clinical encounters early, in fact, with your first patient in the clinic tomorrow afternoon I will see you there, so you need your white coats today because We will learn by doing immediately learning by doing means that high standards will be expected of you, high academic standards, of course, but also high expectations of your responsibility and your professional values.
Now we wouldn't have those standards if we weren't safe. you could make it to them we know you can be successful because we know this is not done alone you would not have made it here to HMS and hsdm on your own and you are not expected to finish your medical and dental studies on your own I know many This afternoon you will thank someone in your life who has been important to your success when you encounter this stage, but now let's collectively thank the parents, families, friends, teachers, coaches, mentors and everyone else who played a role in bringing you here today with a big round of applause, let me conclude by congratulating you all and once again, welcome.
We look forward to seeing what you accomplished in the coming years here and I am so pleased to share this first day with you now that it is my It is a great honor to introduce you to our next speaker, Dean George Daly. Dr. Daley is the dean of Harvard Medical School, Caroline Shields Walker Professor of Medicine, a physician-scientist, and an authority on stem cell science and cancer biology. His discoveries have been cited twice in the top positions of scientific journals. 10 advances from the year in which he co-authored International Guidelines for the Conduct and Clinical Translation of Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine and for the Ethical Oversight of Emerging Biotechnologies.
Dean Daley's priorities as dean of Harvard Medical School include fostering computational biomedical and innovative health policy research. build a pipeline of new therapies based on basic science, nurture the next generation of physician-scientists, and promote diversity in science, technology, engineering, and medicine Dean Daly earned his bachelor's degree in medicine from Harvard and a doctorate in biology from MIT. He has worked as an intern. or staff physician at MGH Brigham Dana Farber and Boston Children's Hospital, where he continues to direct a laboratory in the division of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, please join me in welcoming Dean George Daly.
Thank you very much, Bernard, and it's great to have you here as our new Dean of Medical Education. I hope you are enjoying your first official day on the job. A special thank you also to all those who have made this day possible. I want to mention again HMS Director of Student Affairs Cheryl O'Brien, director of hsdm. of student affairs Carrie Sylvan uh, but also associate director of auxiliary services Molly Hudson contact manager of campus services Devon Countryman thank you, thank you, but there is also an extensive Beyond team dedicated to ensuring our safety here on campus, including our director of campus services, security Rob Dixon.
Operations Manager Bill de Simone and Associate Director of Emergency Management Carl Cowan From AV and IT to parking, concierge and maintenance, there are many people who have helped us be here today, too many to name, but I am indebted to them all They and I think all of you are also indebted to them for helping this event run so well this year and every year. I am delighted to personally extend my warmest welcome to the many family and friends who are here in the audience, thank you for joining. us in this extraordinary celebration of an exciting milestone for the newest members of the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Dental Medicine communities now to each of you, yes, let's applaud each of you, um , in the class of 2027, it's wonderful to meet you, uh.
Here, for the first time, congratulations. I know that this is the realization of a very, very long, perhaps lifelong dream, the beginning of your journey to becoming a doctor. Now, in the years to come, you will learn about the latest trends in biomedical science. You will discover new methods for collaborative science and collaborative research, you will be patient and form some of the most meaningful friendships and relationships that will last the rest of your life, and, above all, you will use your extraordinary talents to begin the life of service that this day represents. As doctors, they will assume the responsibility of safeguarding the health of their patients.
They have the great fortune to dedicate their lives to this difficult but infinitely satisfying work from time to time. Do not forget to pause and reflect on the privilege that this represents now, coming to the Faculty of Harvard Medicine in particular is the most favorable opportunity right now, some of the brightest minds in the world are running through the halls of the quadrangular buildings here, the laboratories in our affiliated hospitals, our research institutes. You are surrounded by thousands of intensely productive Harvard scholars, you are very close to the MIT community, and in fact, 30 of you are enrolled in the Harvard MIT Joint Program in Health Sciences and Technology and there are dozens more institutions in the Boston area focused on service innovation. and scholarships that are available to you, you could not have chosen to be here and join a richer learning environment.
Now, how you take advantage of this dynamic biomedical ecosystem will be up to you, you more than anyone will determine the path and breadth of the experience you have here this summer. I've been reading a book called Range by journalist David Epstein. Well, I highly recommend it. Epstein maintains that people who explore a variety of topics and hone multiple skills are especially capable of thriving in the modern world, so for so-called generalists, he says pursuing a variety of interests enhances abstract strategic thinking, the kind of human work that will continue to be essential even amid the impending changes of the AI Revolution, so I invite members of the class of 2027 to explore further and broadly during your time here at Harvard Medical School, Do not discard any line of research, do not discard any of your passions, and do not allow specialization to give you special dispensation to abandon your whole being.
Yes, each of you will be successful. Failures, personal discoveries and each of you will shape the future of Medicine. Last year's incoming students have already channeled their interests into making a difference. Take Alicia Mooney, a 2018 U.S. Presidential Arts Scholar who now leads poetry workshops with low-income single mothers, or Ishan Desai, who worked closely with the late Dr. Paul Farmer before entering to medical school, he volunteered for Boston's homeless health care program during his first year at Harvard Medical School, drawing on his experiences in global health to care for patients marginalized by poverty and illness here Even in Boston now these students are among the many who lead and serve with passion and compassion now.
I hope you will be inspired by those who have preceded you here at Harvard Medical School. During your stay here you will learn about people. such as neonatologist Mary Ellen Avery who saved the lives of countless premature babies when she discovered the cause of respiratory distress syndrome or Harvey Cushing who was the first to describe Cushing's disease and was a crucial advocate in the US of measurement of blood pressure during surgery. You'll see portraits of people like William Augustus Hinton, for whom our society track is named. He was a bacteriologist born to former slaves. Hinton was the first African American to be promoted to the rank of professor not only at Harvard Medical School but at all of Harvard University, and don't forget that he sued Margaret Lee, a surgical oncologist who participated in more than 50 international medical missions treating both American soldiers and Iraqi prisoners of war.
Both the portraits of Hintons and Lee, among others, are the result of Harvard's long-term concerted effort to make I am confident that the artwork on campus is representative and inclusive of our entire community, so let the The work of these biomedical luminaries inspires you, their lives and their achievements inspire me every day, and finally, I want to share with you that when I arrived here as a medical student in 1982 and received my white coat, I was excited but I also had many doubts I asked myself if I had had enough preparation as all my companionsI found you so brilliant and accomplished but let me tell you this we all have our doubts but each of you has something you need to succeed here, each of you has determination, desire, a Harvard medical school will challenge you, it is our responsibility to challenge you. , provoke them, inspire them, and sometimes frustrate them and make them uncomfortable.
Get used to it, but we'll do it. I will also support you, nurture you, and take a deep personal interest in you, so I hope you take this message to heart. Everyone belongs here. Our community is enriched by each and every one of you and it means a lot to us that you have chosen. to bring your extraordinary talents to our community and we can't wait to see what you will accomplish here at Harvard, so on behalf of Harvard Medical School, our faculty, our postdocs, our staff, fellow students, alumni, I I welcome this proud start, congratulations, thank you Dean Daly.
I would now like to introduce you to the Dean of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Dr. William Ginobili Hobley, he is an educator and leader in the field of periodontics and an internationally recognized scholar in oral regenerative medicine, tissue engineering and precision medicine. Well I must say that two strong feelings emerged and were evident when I was watching and listening to those incredible presentations. One is, of course, the feeling of gratitude that many of you expressed for your friends, your family, your loved ones, your mentors, your siblings, all those people who helped you get to where you are today, but the Gratitude was overwhelmed just because of another strong feeling which was the feeling of Pride and pride is the feeling that all those people you were talking about felt when they saw you reach this Milestone today. I'd love to ask you to make one more.
What it would be like for me if all of our newly minted white coat wearers could stand it if you're able and comfortable doing so now you're not standing you're not standing for me you're standing for them so would you please? Turn around and express your gratitude once again with a clap. Thanks for doing that. I think I can officially crown this great first day.
