s, so the white coat, as you know, is a symbol of the profession, but sometimes people outside of the medical field ask why we give them the white coats when you first come in, do you? they are not a sign of achievement, something that should only come at the culmination of a journey. Well, today we give you your white coats for reasons both philosophical and practical, both individual and collective. Philosophically the white coat is indeed a symbol of achievement. You have already achieved a lot. It's all an individual achievement for you. having made it to medical school and dental school and we are very proud of you for being here at HMS and hsdm, but in many ways your work is just beginning, so the white coat is also a symbol of aspiration, individual aspiration so it has not yet been achieved.

The white coat is a symbol of your aspiration to learn how to treat those in need, your aspiration to discover new ways to maintain the health of our populations, and your aspiration to share your knowledge with your colleagues and the community at large, so that In a sense, I will work hard to earn this white coat.
