Has Mercedes ruined the G-Wagen?

May 20, 2024
a bit into gclass, but actually, to tell you the truth, well, it's better than before if you're really flaccid. Worn on the wrist it still doesn't close, but it's definitely an improvement to make up for the lack of rumble of an internal combustion engine. The electric car has something called The grw Sound experience. If I turn it on, you hear that there is something like this. The hum sounds like an engine running, but not like a digital engine running, and obviously when you drive it, you get some sort of noise to add some excitement to the whole experience.

Now, if you think that's a bunch of synthetic nonsense, you can of course turn it on. off and it's never going to sound as good as the 4L twin turbo V8 but it still adds something if you ask me, on the previous G van the reversing camera was here under the spare wheel obscuring the view . They've moved it lower, which means it's more susceptible to getting covered in Rog gin, but look, there's a washing machine, go wash it and see. That caught my attention, but that's not the only camera system in this car . New here is a dash cam, so it will record if you have an accident, but you can also use it to record your off-road driving so you can watch.

Go back and just admire how good you are. The new G-Class has this off-road cockpit button, so you press it and all this off-road information appears. Plus, you now have a special camera view that will show you underneath the car. so it actually paints as you go, this electric version has some features over the standard car instead of the normal diff buttons which you don't need because the diffs activate automatically on the electric version, you have this button here that actually It causes the car to turn more abruptly on loose surfaces because when you turn hard it will cause the wheels on one side of the car to turn in the opposite direction to the others.

Now, by pressing that button, you can go one step further and use it. functionality to make the car turn in place, you can actually turn it in place two full circles, that's not all, although the electric version of this car also has variable cruise control for slow, medium or fast off-roading, plus It has a better waiting depth than the standard g-class, which is 700mm for the standard car, 850mm wide for this particular electric version, which beats that of a cyber truck and a Hummer EV, although it is still not as good as a Range Rover which can weigh up to 900mm.

One of the problems when converting an ice car into an electric car is that you have to put the battery somewhere and it usually eats up the space in the trunk or the cabin, but what Mercedes has actually done is squeeze the battery pack between the chassis of the ladder frame and they have been able to do this by giving it two battery levels, so that two battery levels sit on top of each other. The chill between them is now one of the risks of doing this. If you go off-road and hit a rock, you could puncture the battery pack and then you'll have a nasty electrical fire that you probably won't be able to put out, so what Mercedes has done is installed this protection panel. under the car now, if they had made it out of steel it would have added 200kg to the weight of the car, so instead it is made of strong reinforced plastic carbon fiber and weighs 50kg.
Now this thing is so tough that Mercedes has been testing the car by driving it up a ramp and crashing it into a rock to make sure it doesn't puncture when you're off-roading because that would be really bad apparently you can drop three times the weight of the vehicle on it. this panel on a rock and will remain intact Mercedes has had to redesign the rear axle in the electric version of the G-Class because in the normal car you have like a rigid axle with a differential in the middle and it moves as if everything is fine, without However, because it has this electric motor system here in the rear you couldn't have it on top of the axle because you would have too much unsprung mass because it weighs around 150 kilos.
Also you can't have cables, these electrical cables move around when you're off-roading because they could split, so they separated this and then redesigned the rear light bar so you still get all the good chassis articulation and off-road capability that you have with the car with internal combustion engine. You're probably wondering what's under the hood of this car so let's take a look, ooh H it's interesting to have a peak underneath, actually before we do that let me explain the engine options so you've got a 3 liter diesel which generates 367 horsepower. There is also a 3L petrol 6 straight turbo that has 450 horsepower, then there is the G63 with 585 horsepower.
Now all those cars have a 9 speed automatic gearbox and four wheel drive, they also have a small mild hybrid electric motor, so when you first put your foot down you get a torque increase of up to 200 newm from torque that helps you stay on track and also smoothes out the gap between gear changes. Anyway, this is the electric version, so let's take a look at this huge frunk they've created. under here oh no, there's actually not much space, you can probably put some things in there, but that's where your motors are, but to find out more about them, let's go somewhere else, the car actually has four electric motors, but It's not one on each axis like you.
You could imagine that you have two electric motors in the front and two in the rear and they are actually united in one power unit, so here is a power unit in the front with two electric motors, there is one electric motor that drives this way and from there the drive shaft comes out that will go to the left wheel and then there is another one that points in the opposite direction with the drive shaft coming out that way towards the right side wheel. Also, if you look inside, you will see that there are two different ones. gears, there is the high range mode for normal driving and then there is the low range mode.
The electric version of the G-Class has a 116KW battery which is good for a range of 285K, so that's a little less than the range you can get. from a Tesla cyber truck and to see my full in-depth video review of that car, click on the pop-up banner there or follow the QR code on the screen right now, you can fast charge this car with DC current at 200 KW and can go from a 20% to 80% drop in less than half an hour; However, if you are using its small 7-layer wall charger, it will take about 18 hours to fully charge the battery, this new electric G-Class has 587 horsepower, which is two horsepower more than the G63 AMG, There's a lot more talk though 1,160 new m compared to 850 new m, so you're thinking it'll be quicker up to 62 mph, aren't you?
No, you see, this is quite heavy, it weighs approximately 500 kilos more than the G63 so 62 mph is indicated in 4.7 seconds, but what is the reality? I'm going to find out now using my specialized timing gear, let's throw 3 2 1, wow, as it got faster it got a little wayward, yeah it's faster than they say, not to 62mph in 4.68 seconds, driving this electric G truck is a little strange, you see that you get serious performance when you put the pedal to the metal. I mean, instant response, it just gets better now, one of the things for me with the G63 is that while it's super quick the moment you first press the accelerator pedal, nothing really happens because it has to go down a notch. speed, the turbos have to rev up before it actually takes off, with this, you're up and running straight away and from the driver's seat, the performance seems pretty identical, in fact it's a bit more so on this one due to the response. snapshot.
It's very strange to get that kind of performance and have the car lean like that without any noise. H, let's try the grav experience if that just makes it feel better, it kind of adds to it a little bit, but it's not as good as the V8 sound, although in fact when you're pinging it's a little bit in the background and it's It becomes quieter if you enter. Comfort mode in some ways I prefer Comfort mode, it's like a little extra theater. I think it's okay, in fact the suspension seems softer than before, maybe it's because now all models come standard with adaptive dampers, so when you're in Comfort mode, it's actually quite nice, since with all The G's, every time you go over a bump, it shakes a little bit because you have that ladder frame chassis that just transmits some of the shaking to the cabin through your butt through the seat.
In terms of handling, this is a big, heavy vehicle and considering that and the fact that it has a ladder frame chassis, it actually corners well. I think overall the dynamics of the standard car are better and, once again, that's due to the weight. What I have noticed with this electric version is the brakes, so when you hit the brakes you can tell you are stopping a three tonne worth of vehicle, it seems a little harder on the brakes than the petrol version, that's the problem of having to worry about an extra. 500 kilos in terms of battery and electronics and stuff, one thing that is noticeably different between this and the internal combustion engine vehicle than what these paddles do so they don't change any gears because you don't have a 9 automatic gearbox speeds like the Instead, on the internal combustion engine model, if you press downshift, you get an increase in regenerative braking, so when you lift off the accelerator, it will actually decelerate more abruptly and you can get a double negative there. and it really slows down quite a bit.
For the most part, it's almost one-pedal driving, so if you lift off the accelerator it will slow down a bit, but it never comes to a complete stop. Look, I'm still moving forward now. I wouldn't drive like that now. One of the reasons is if you're constantly slowing down and regenerating, it's not as efficient as coasting for as long as possible, so you can put this car in coast mode and you do that by pulling up on the paddle to get D+ and then when you lift the car it will just slide and that's the best way to be as efficient as possible.
Now the problem with that is that you could end up crashing into the back of another car or going off the road because you're coming into a curve, so to avoid that you can lift the paddle again to go into deuto and what that will do is let you Your Coast will climb to the point where the car needs to slow down, such as when you approach a car in front, and then it will automatically apply the correct amount of Regenerate to slow down to keep you at a safe distance, but not too slow. It will even do the same when you approach a corner, so when you come to a corner and lift off the accelerator, it will slide. but he will slow you down if necessary so you don't go off the road like you are doing now.
There's something great about having an electric G truck that has that instant response that's quiet when you want it to be. I think the best way to drive this is the sport mode if we go to solo driving and we have a sport suspension and comfort which is amazing because then you get a quicker throttle response, the Comfort suspension and I think I will have it without the noise because there is something quite interesting about a quiet G van, well I say quiet, other than the body wind noise, I think if I was just cruising around town, like a lot of people who drive G vans, I would use the electric or It would be a great case for herself.
The best thing is the exemption from the congestion charge. It's a shame that this is how most in the UK will drive because this is a proper off-roader and the electric version, in some ways, might be even better than the petrol version and to find out if it is, I think I need to get out of the track and getting into the dirt and mud, this is Renato from Mercedes, he is an engineer, so he will help me while I am in the off-road. Oh well, the first thing I want to point out. Although this car doesn't have the nice Alcantara up there or the leather up here and I don't like the steering wheel that much either.
You can choose a different and different style of the roof, maybe the full leather one, yes. I think that costs more money, though obviously anyway, let's go, so I'm going to drive around here. I can drive in normal mode, like Highway mode right now. There's no point in changing anything else, sure at this point, but if you want. You could change the way, which was, oh, you still hear the sound of the central locking, like a gun going off. You're just saying there's a different way. Trail, what does Trail mode do? To adjust the damping, the accelerator pedal and the steering, okay? especially for this kind of purposes for light off-road use, so the car is now better set up for driving on this gray surface.
I still have a lot of throttle response, right? Oh, wait a minute, let's get back to playing sports.the pedal, your friction brakes work and bleed on regen, so it feels more natural than when the first part of the braking is just regen before the friction brakes kick in, but I prefer the brakes on this AMG version , which it seems. It's just that the weight really seems a little heavier when it comes to stopping now in Comfort mode there's definitely not the throttle response of the electric version. There's not a lot going on. I'm going to put it on Sport Plus.
Let's try the same thing again. It's a slightly better throttle response, but it needs to be ramped up so instant acceleration isn't as impressive as the electric G wagon. That noise is better though, right? Let's give it a squirt. It feels more fun to accelerate on this, now I'm going to go to manual mode, we'll change gears myself, so it lacks throttle response, but as the power increases it feels quicker and it also feels quicker by the noise that is heard and I can hear it. coming out of the side exhaust I have to say similar money 180 Grand for the electric version 185 for this I choose the AMG well I would choose the AMG if it was never Offroad now one of the big updates for this new G63 is special hydraulically linked shock absorber system, for what the left and right shock absorbers are linked by a hydraulic linkage and what that allows AMG to do is control the amount of lean the car has in the Benz, so you don't need a normal stabilizer bar because the system takes control of the effect of preventing the vehicle from leaning which helps it stay flatter in corners and feel sportier 40 as you cycle through the different driving modes from Comfort to Sport Plus the level of anti-an now increases That does help the car's handling and as a result it definitely feels sportier to drive than the electric G-Class.
I mean, that's to be expected because it's the AMG version, however the electric G-Class counters slightly with its ability to generate torque vectoring and control the amount of power going to each individual wheel, which helps propel that car. in the corners, but ultimately, the extra weight, that extra 00 kilo fire of the electric G truck means that on the road I think I'd rather have this G63, than if you consider it. Although the price is the same for me, it's a pretty easy off-road option. It's a different matter that the electric G truck with all its capability just means it's a great off-roader, an all-rounder if you only do a short off-road trip if you're going for Overland Crossing Country, you know, doing that kind of thing.
You'll want the gas version just because you can load it up with jerry cans and go without fear of running out of battery and having nowhere to charge the car in general, then the new electric G pickup is really impressive. I'd rather have it. the gasoline version, this particular G63, yes, I would do it anyway.
