GR Yaris v AMG A45 v Civic Type-R battle: 0-60mph, lap time & brake test!

May 31, 2021
what is the ultimate hatch, well in this video we will find out because I have put together my three favorites, the mercedes amg a45s, the new toyota gr

yaris

and the recently reviewed honda

civic

thai park, now what are we going to do. is to compare them in a variety of categories, I will tune them in one lap, I will

test

their braking performance, I will compare the sound the engines make, I will also see how close they can get to the manufacturer claimed no 260

time

s, I will also drive them in different conditions and do some

test

s that will be important to car enthusiasts, then what I'm going to do is rate each car by how well it does in each test, three points for Earn two points for a second place and just one point for the car that come last.

I'm going to roll all the points and the car with the most points overall wins. Simple, let's keep buying a new car and then get to the car. wow and my team will help you find your next car at a fair price. wow, your one stop car buying comparison site. Let's start by talking about prices because a hot hatch should be relatively affordable and this Toyota Gi Yaris starts at little less. £30,000, which may seem like a lot for a

yaris

, but it's a yaris basically in name only, it's a very, very personalized car, however you'll want to spend an extra three and a half thousand pounds on the circuit pack to get a differential of limited slip front and rear and some better forged alloy wheels.

More Interesting Facts About,

gr yaris v amg a45 v civic type r battle 0 60mph lap time brake test...

You have to have that package, otherwise you're an idiot and that brings the total cost to £33,500, which is quite a bit now on the

civic

side. It's a little more expensive at £34,500, but considering it's a larger car, it appears to be better value for money than the Yaris. Finally we get to the A45 and it starts from just over £51,000 which is a real stunner. As a result, it comes last in terms of value for money, so it gets one point, the Yaris comes in second with two points, but the best value car here is the Pacific Type R, so which now gets three points if so. thinking of buying a new car, if you click on the pop up banner and sit there, it should appear now or there is a link below the video, if you want to click on it, you can get a car, wow, we can save an average. of £3000 on a new car now, if you don't want to do that now and maybe at a later date, all you have to do is just Google, help me with the car, I'll take you straight there and then my team. will help you choose the right car for you and get it at a fair price from one of our trusted dealers.

The next category is all about fan-pleasing data. You know the kind of information you can bore your friends with about your car. Nice facts for fans. In the case of this A45S it is the fact that it has the most powerful four-cylinder series production engine ever produced, it produces 421 horsepower and is hand built by men and women at Alfalter in Germany. this one is actually made by a guy named mark i can't read his last name. It has a strange signature, but well made. You built it with your hands. The Honda Civic Type R is the fastest front-wheel drive production car around the Nurburgring with a

time

of seven minutes and 43.8 seconds.
gr yaris v amg a45 v civic type r battle 0 60mph lap time brake test
Wow! I need to stop doing this thing where I get my ass kicked when I say Nurburgring times anyway. Interestingly, this car is actually five seconds faster around the ring than the A45, which I think I missed anyway, if you want the best fanboy car out there. This is why it is a homologation special, it was built to go on rallies and Toyota had to make 25,000 of them as a road car. I mean, it's really special. It may be called Yaris, but that's the only thing it shares with the regular Yaris. Its headlights, its exterior mirrors and its small roof antenna are custom made, they are hand-built by specialized engineers at Toyota's special Moto Machi plant in Japan, this car actually takes 10 times longer to build than a normal Yaris and It has a ton of tricks like smart switches the four wheel drive system and stuff like that its crazy and that's why it gets three points the civic gets two points and the mercedes mg one point for the fanatic.
Nice facts, each of these cars has a feature that allows you to be a bit of a hooligan, so the honda civic, its front wheel drive breaks traction very easily, so you can do smoky burnouts off the line even though only the front wheel spins, which is still annoying to people around you, that mercedes, oh my god, has a really clever drift mode that lets you over rev the rear wheels and drift it like a drive car rear, you can do donuts on it, it's amazing, even though you never use it, you often see this yaris actually has the most useful feature and it's an old fashioned manual hand

brake

. and when you use it it actually decouples the engine, it's designed to be used like your rally card doing turns with the hand

brake

and that means if you're going one direction and you suddenly think no, I want to go the other, you can turn it quite easily. that's why the underscore is one dot the mercedes is two dots and there's the rs three dots shiny this next category is all about looks and for me my favorite is easily this gi yaris it's so special, so unique, it's a three-door to boot, which is instant. sportier than the other two and then there are features like the aggressive face, the wide haunches, the sloping roofline, it's crazy, there's really nothing like it, I love it, don't get me wrong, this a45 is also very nice for To start, the normal A-Class looks great, but this one with all the aerodynamics is much more aggressive, it stands out and I like this yellow paint.
The only problem for me is the fact that it is identical to the A35 which is cheap but the only difference between the two is the fact that this one has four exhaust pipes and the a35 only has two exhaust pipes and that's it so people can confuse you don't want when you spend all that money we finally get to the honda and I'm not going to beat around the bush here this car looks sorry it just runs it's like a 10 year old designed it after eating about a kilogram of candy it's a bit embarrassing to be seen telling you the truth, I think they should probably change the h on the license plate to a y and it would be more or less disgusting, that's why this car gets a point for the locks, the Mercedes two and the points of the little Toyota.
Now you come to the sound check because you want your sports car, your hot hatch to sound good, so let's listen to them first, honda soft limiter, see what it's like when you drive outside it's regular and inside so it doesn't sound very good , now come on try the yaris gi so accelerate while stopped oh another soft limiter sounds pretty good here because you have fake noise playing on the speakers which I don't like the idea but it's actually kind of nice for my ears, I know. which on the outside sounds like the nice rattle of a diesel 3, let's see what it's like when you drive it, yes I know it sounds bad on the outside, probably worse than the civic, but inside it's a little better and that matters as a driver because you can enjoy the sound more even though it's fake and that makes me feel dirty finally then the amg or you can read it all the way up so for the stationary noise test this definitely wins oh a little pop okay let's see how is.
When you drive it here we're going good, I know it sounds better on the outside and it definitely sounds better on the inside than the other two cars so it's a clear win for the AMG, it sounds better for sure so it gets three points. and I think in second place is the Toyota only gets two points and the Honda is last with one point. Now let's talk about interiors and there is a clear winner here and it is the Mercedes. It is far above the other two. The design is great. It has the best technology, the best infotainment, you have electrically operated seats, I even have a beautiful glass roof and a beautiful, beautiful cabin.
I love it. In second place is the Honda. The overall design of the cabin is quite good. The quality is good. I like the way they've lifted it for this Type R with the red flashes here on the steering wheel and on the seats and the driving position itself is brilliant, I really love it and the Alcantara steering wheel which is so bold, I like it You actually get digital darts too, the only real complaint is the infotainment system which is poor, thankfully you only use Apple Carplay, Android Auto so it doesn't matter that much, it's nice, the worst interior is the Yaris, everything It's a bit dark and miserable and the material quality isn't as good as the other two.
There are some good things, like I like these seats, they are very supportive, however they seem to be mounted quite high so if you want to wear a helmet it's a bit of a hassle. tight and if you're too tall you're not going to fit in this car another thing that's a little annoying is this aspect, the capsule for the forward facing camera for the security systems extends quite a bit down, so this rear. ..The rearview mirror is quite low, so there is a small gap between there and the top of the dash, which is a bit annoying and ruins forward visibility, so this car gets a point for the interior, the Honda two and the Mercedes three points next.
The test is about acceleration and how easy it is to get close to the time the manufacturers claim is not 60, so this iris is not supposed to last only 16 5.5 seconds, but I'm going to see what I do in reality and how to do it. I'm going to use my specialist dealer equipment here now, this car has a 1.6 liter turbocharged petrol engine with just three cylinders, so it makes 261 horsepower and 360 Nm of torque. Four-wheel drive should get me off the line, but I'm going to put the car's four-wheel drive system in sport mode, so now 70% of the power goes to the rear wheels, which which would help when starting, but let's figure out if we get a decent launch, a not so decent gear change, what do we get? 60 in 5.86 seconds, let's try again, see if I can do better, not so good three from the line, oh dirty gear change, what did he get?
Yeah it wasn't that good 6.14 come on now I have the car in track mode and stability office if that helps a decent start oh that's better yeah we got a time that isn't 60 in 5 .43 seconds, 0.1 of a second faster than Toyota claims. Now let's try the Civic, so it has a forced two-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 320 horsepower and 400 newton meters of torque six-speed manual again, but being front-wheel drive, this can be more difficult to launch and achieve the Zero 60 claimed in 5.8 seconds look what I don't do, that's bullshit, a full 6.8 seconds slower than it's supposed to do, but I was just spinning the wheels, let's try it again, that's even worse .
Oh yes, 5.89. I'm quite satisfied with that. For this last throw, I'll try just doing a side step on the clutch to see what happens. Oh, I didn't like it. Oh yeah, that was wicked. 5.62 seconds so it's 0.2 seconds faster than the manufacturer claims so I did it on the yaris. I accelerated by 0.1 seconds, as claimed by the manufacturer, so this is not the leader so far. Finally, we come to the AMG and, as with the Honda, it has a two-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol, although somehow the Germans managed to squeeze an extra 100 horsepower out of their two-litre four-cylinder engine.
It has 421 horsepower. It's crazy that they did it because it also has 400 Nm of torque. one result, Mercedes says it won't hit 60 in 3.9 seconds, but remember this is all about how close or how much you can improve on the manufacturer's claimed time, so let's see what I can do with this Mercedes and it doesn't require no skill. an 8-bit dual-clutch automatic gearbox with launch control. I do nothing but put my left foot on the brake. Press the accelerator. I'm going to turn up the boot mode. Release the brake. Oh God, it's brutal. This thing, nothing. 60 first, 3.86 seconds. interesting, it was a little bit smoother and what we got is exactly the same, 3.86 seconds, I felt better, it was the same final attempt this time.
I turned off stability completely to see if that makes any difference, right? Oh, a bit of a difference or to 60 in 3.79 seconds, so what does that mean? When I do the math, it means this car was 0.11 seconds faster than the manufacturer claims, the Toyota was 0.9 seconds faster than the manufacturer claims, but the Honda overall did 0.18 seconds. faster than the manufacturers claimed, not 60 times, as a result Honda gets three points, this gets two points and Toyota only gets one point. This next category is all about the features of the car that racers like and one of them has badges so the honda civic

type

r has so many

type

r badges the gi yaris has so many gr badges but that's nothing this car hasso many amg badges 29 amg badges it's crazy but while badges are important they're not as important as a cool exhaust system and the civic has the best - it has three exhaust pipes which is quite unusual and they are completely real and they all have a purpose, while the three exhausts are impressive, they are not as impressive as the carbon fiber ones. roof, which is what this gi yaris has now.
Interestingly this is actually a wrap, it's actually carbon fiber underneath, but to save money they decided to wrap it instead of lacquer it because it would have been more expensive, that's what it looks like underneath anyway. A carbon fiber roof means this car wins for having something that racers love and that's why it gets three points, the Honda gets two points and the Mercedes gets one point. Now I want to see how well these cars stop, so I'll do that. Get a full emergency stop at 70 miles per hour and see how long it takes to come to a complete stop and start with the Civic.
It has a 350-millimeter disc at the front held by four piston calipers, 305 discs at the rear with a single-piston caliper and weighs 1,405 kilos. let's go up to 70, there are 70. so it stopped from 70 miles per hour in 48 meters, not bad, ignore the fact that that says kilometers per hour up there for configuration reasons, so it's in meters, not in feet, now it's time for the amg. It has a 360 millimeter disc at the front clamped by six-piston calipers and at the rear it has a single-piston caliper clamping a 330 millimeter disc, so the largest brakes, but it has the largest weight, it weighs 1.60 kilos, it's a A little bit dumb, let's see how that affects the braking performance from 70.
Okay, here we go 17. What are you going to do? Oh, I saw it break from 70 miles per hour in 49 meters, which is a meter more than the Honda, but how will it do it? The Toyota Yaris has 356 millimeter discs at the front held by four-part calipers, at the rear you have 297 millimeter discs held by two-part calipers. Think about this car, although it weighs around 1280 kilos, so it is ultimately the lightest car. Will that help with this brake test? Let's find out I love this engine. Okay, here we go, let's go, oh, I almost put the pedal to the floor, what do you get for this to start from 70 miles per hour in 50 meters, so despite being the lightest?
Honda lost, one gets three points, the energy was second, gets two points and this one only gets one point. One of the main attractions of attractive hatchbacks is the fact that they are attractive, but they are also hatchbacks, which means that, in practical terms, it should work no matter what. Here, in the case of the gi yaris, you see that it is only a three-door, which means that it is difficult for people to sit in the back seats, especially because the driver's seat does not slide forward, the passenger does, but for some reason the driver's. seat no so I'll have to get in this way and then when you're in the back that sloping roof line that makes the car look so cool means the headroom is horrible then there's the boot really , very small, only three fit.
Aircraft-sized hand luggage cases in the boot under the lower deck aren't so practical after all, luckily this amg has rear doors meaning it's easy to get into the back and it's quite spacious here back, not huge but ok, decent headroom, decent legroom all good, boots are a decent size and you can also fit five airline style carry-on suitcases under the cargo cover. However, the most practical car is this Honda Civic Type R, it is really spacious here in the back, noticeably more even than the Mercedes. A great car for families, especially since you can fit seven suitcases in the trunk.
Really impressive, I'm not so sure about this, although it covers five on the seat backs anyway. Despite that, it still earns three points for practicality. The Mercedes gets two points and a bit of Gi Yaris. Just one point: If you buy a hot hatch, you'll probably want to take it to the track at some point, so I'll compare these cars on a track starting with the Civic Type R and now drive them. around this little speed track and time them to see who does the fastest lap now that it's the middle of winter and it's very, very freezing, so there are my race driver excuses and the fact that it's front wheel drive just means that it's already struggling to get its power right and it's a little larry, come on let's put it in r plus mode but with stability on just to help me out a little bit because it can get a little larry, this thing stays constant on power, be patient, whoa oh. it just wants to take off from the oversteer come on oh the brakes are so good although it really feels flat and solid and like a race car like it's summer and dry I think that would be amazing it feels like a race car you did a 31.82 i.
I'll take it well let's see what the Toyota can do so I have track mode because I'm on a track where I have rev matching because the pedal is too far apart for me to heal with confidence and tow and I have stability off because I have all-wheel drive, let's see if that's a mistake, hopefully I won't crash it, oh it feels, it'll slide a little bit, so in cheat mode it sends 50 of the power to the rear wheels, which is great because it means that you can get power a little earlier than I do in the Civic.
It feels a little pointier because it's shorter, a little less race car, which I don't think you can get. The response to the controls is as good as what is done on the Honda and the gear change, although lovely, is not as agile, that is on the other side of the line, it was quicker, although you did it in 31.27 ooh a little faster than the Honda so we finally get to the mercedes so I have it in race mode with stability mode and sport handling so let me fall a little but you should pick me up if I get too carried away let's find out that will slide around this thing, well, it's very clever. what larry can be, oh that won't be good for my time, but maybe the engine performance can help bail me out.
It feels a little more electronic than the other two. This car is like all the systems help you be a little better than you. They really are, but let's find out if that actually works for a faster lap time. You did it in 30.36. This is the fastest car and it was also a lot of fun to slide around. This wins the track test. Timing these cars well on a circuit is All well and good, what really matters for a hot hatch is how fun it is to drive on a twisty road and this a45s is an absolute monster, it covers ground so quickly and effortlessly you'd be surprised how much Fast as it can go, in fact. somehow you can go too fast because you're having fun, you look at the speedometer and realize you're going fast enough to go straight to jail, that's a bit of a problem because you have to be absolutely hammering it to really enjoy the thrill and Sometimes it's just too hard to do it safely on the roads.
Another small disadvantage is the fact that it is automatic. Yes, you can change gears yourself by pulling the paddles, but it is not as complicated as having it. three pedals and a manual shifter, but still this is epic. I'm a big fan of jumping out of the mercedes and this feels a lot more analogue, whereas the mercedes is more digital, you feel like their systems are helping you a little more. the starter motor has a manual gearbox and three pedals and the placement of the pedals is perfect for following and towing which adds to the fun and this is an amazing car there is so much feel through all the controls it is absolutely epic, I think if it were completely dry on the track, this would have made the time faster, the problem arises, although when the conditions are not so good, everything can become a bit complicated, start turning the wheels and look, it's a bit scary and really on an unknown road you can't cover ground as fast as you can in the Mercedes, however generally most of the time on a winding road you get a bit more performance out of this car, you feel like you have You have to work harder at it and ultimately, Finally it's a little more fun, then we get to the Gr Yaris and what an incredible car.
It combines the ability to cover the ground with short legs of that AMG, but with all the tactility of the Honda. Now I am absolutely in love with him. Being small, you can really slide around a twisty rear area full of confidence and obviously you have all that grip thanks to the four-wheel drive system. It's crazy how fast it can go, you can still have fun at lower speeds than in the In the other two cars there's something about it, part of the reason is that you can change the four-wheel drive system from sending 60 power up front to have 70 in the rear when you're in sport mode so you can get pushed out of the corners and it feels like a sports car, not like a yaris hatchback, of course, it's not really a yaris hatchback at all, It's a special rally car with homologation, what a thing, it's crazy, cars like this will never be built again.
It's a defining moment anyway, enough is enough. I need to give you some scores. I'll give the Yaris three points. It's so epic. Two points go to the Civic because it's a lot of fun. It just breaks down slightly. If the conditions aren't good it can be a bit tricky to drive and a point for the Mercedes because whilst it's brilliant on a winding road it's almost too easy, it's not as tricky as if the two cars were the ultimate challenge. What are these cars like as daily drivers because the thing about the hot hatch is that it's often the only car so you should be able to use it just for general commuting and driving around town and it shouldn't get on your nerves.
For starters, this Toyota is actually surprisingly good around town. Being small, it is very easy to drive and avoiding traffic makes parking easy. The only downside is that the rear window is quite small, but it doesn't matter because you. I have parking sensors and a rear view camera which is pretty decent. Another good thing is the fact that while the suspension is firm and it's even firmer with this track package, it's not bad, it can cope with the speed. It can cope with potholes, it is an easy car to drive around the city and what makes you dream here is that you have all the safety systems, such as the lane change warning.
Now what's even more important is that when you get on the highway, this car has one feature that is brilliant and makes it easy to live with and that is automatic cruise control with lane keep assist, so it will do everything the hard work of staying in the lane while maintaining a safe distance from the car in front to make those long highway trips Simply less stressful, the only real problem this car has is that the sound insulation is not great, so You hear quite a bit of noise from those tires echoing through the cabin, but actually, for this type of car, it's now surprisingly easy to live with.
If I got into the civic you might think it would be a better daily driver than the yaris, but hey, it comes with adaptive suspension as standard so you can put it in comfort mode, the difference isn't as much as you might think. It still struggles a bit with small road imperfections, although it's not that bad and you could easily live with it. One thing this one isn't as good at as that little Yaris is the fact that it's a bigger car as a result. It's harder to park and you sit very low in the Civic Type R, which is absolutely brilliant when driving on a track or a twisty road because you feel part of the car, but that doesn't mean your view is forward.
It's not that good, so that elevated driving position, which can be somewhat annoying for sports car fans in the Yaris, is actually an advantage in daily commuting. There is one thing in particular about the civic type r that really bothers me. when I drive it around the city and that's the turning radius, it's 12.5 meters which is terrible, in contrast the yaris is 10.8 meters which means that if you need to make a U-turn or take Going around a mini roundabout is very hard work. this civic guy gets in my head every time i have to park this when you go faster you can calm down like the yaris this car has automatic cruise control so it uses radar keep a safe distance from the car in front or Still, to keep you in the lane and is standard when traveling at speed, this car is probably a little quieter than the Yaris, but it is actually louder than I imagined and the engine can be a little monotonous at times when you don't understand it .
As much tire noise as the yaris, but maybe more wind noise. I'd say this has a slight advantage until you get to the bottom line: two-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, especially when you combine that with the powerful engine, you can find that. You lose traction very easily when driving for half the year in the UK, the roads are always a bit greasy and this car can sometimes feel a bit glitchy if you accelerate out of a bend or accelerate onto the motorway by engaging the traction control and that means it's a car that requires a bit more concentration when you drive it every day and can get on your nerves a bit if you're in absolutely dry country.
Well it doesn't matter that it's only two wheel drive but you really feel the benefit of four wheel drive in the UK last but not least we come to the A45, you won't be surprised that this is the best daily . Driver, the cabin environment is better than other cars to begin with, being automatic makes it easy to live with, especially in the city. To be fair, this automatic gearbox can sometimes jerk randomly, but it's still easier than changing gears yourself and it's quite maneuverable too. much better than the civic not as good as the yaris visibility is very good in this car better than the civic so it is easier to navigate through traffic and let's be honest just sitting inside this cabin for an extended period of time is better than being sat in the other two cars and the infotainment system was brilliant, the easiest to use now this car has the plus package which costs an extra six grand which is a lot of money but it includes adaptive dampers and then when you have the car in comfort mode it's really good on the bumps, it's been the civic and it's definitely better than the yaris, honestly this car is easy to live with now, when you're speeding down the highway it feels the most refined and also not dead.
Quiet - Its sports tires still make quite a bit of noise, but it's quieter than the other two and better for longer trips. One thing aside and that's the fact that in the UK you can't get this car with adaptive cruise control with steering assist, which is crazy. I don't know what Mercedes was doing in the UK by not offering that feature. I've driven this car in Germany with it and it's really good and that's really my only complaint with this car most people won't care but I really love that you can shut up that's another thing that bothers me about this car , it's always playing. when you mention the n-word anyway, even though you always get interrupted by the voice recognition system and can't get adaptive cruise steering assist, this is still the best daily driver and therefore gets three points, The Yaris is almost at its limit. the civic then gets two points and let's see if it comes last with one point then what are the final scores well in third place with 25 points is a honda civic type r in second place with 26 points is the mercedes amg a45s but the overall winner with 27 points is the new Toyota GR Yaris.
It is the ultimate hot hatch and I have just proven it mathematically. I hope everyone enjoyed the video.
