Genesis GV80 | No Longer a Copycat

the new

genesis

gv80

, very similar to the g80 sedan, we made a video about this, it is completely new and unlike the previous products in their portfolio, this one was designed from the ground up to be a luxury car that is not shared with any other hyundai and kia product, so this is really the launch of a new generation vehicle from the outside to the inside, there is a lot less copy and paste from other pre-premium brands, more on the interior space and I will get into that's when you look at the door panel. For example, this is always a great entry into the car.

You can see the leathers, the cross stitching in the leather, how they have these geometric lines flowing smoothly. Matte wood alloys are used. Ornaments that are made of real wood. Soft leather on the top door and plastics on the bottom. They don't look like something out of a 20,000 model car and this is something you see in mid-level luxury cars, it's a tough pill to swallow, it doesn't look cheap at all and it's not even the highest trim level. I'm looking at the 3.5t biturbo engine which is the advanced plus version for 65k. Now the base price starts at forty-nine thousand for the rear-wheel drive four-button turbo.

More Interesting Facts About,

Let's start with the seats in the driver's area, they feel good, the leather feels soft. and flexible and one of its engineers decided on a long road trip that he was no

going to suffer fatigue in the driver's seat, so he created the ergo motion design that is not a massager, it follows the function more of a medical bed which has air bladders if someone is bedridden for quite a long time the bed adjusts itself to prevent pressure or sores and that is what this seed also tries to emulate by moving the pelvis or hips moving the back a little so that those pressure points won't settle and cause fatigue, so it will turn on at a preset time to make sure you're moving it on

trips, certain things like the steering wheel heater, seat heaters, and car coolers. seats are right in front of you.

Easy to turn on and off The physical controls here are some of the best Hyundai or Genesis have done. It's easy to interact. There is a good solid click feel. There are enough physical controls without having to constantly interact with the touchscreen. Now this has the same rotating dial that we found on the g80 and while I understand what they were trying to do, they wanted it to be something for everyone to avoid all the complaints. People want touch screens. They want a touch panel. They want a spinning disk. dial, they want a d-pad, it has everything, and even though Genesis says they designed all these inputs for the UI, there's still a disconnect between trying to go from one menu to another, sometimes you have to use the d-pad. pad sometimes you have to use the rotary knob and it takes a while for your brain to adjust to which input I'm going to use next.

Let's look at the gauge cluster on the lower trim levels. You have a physical speedometer. which has a bezel around it and then for the tachometer and the multi-information display, you can see one screen and configure it however you want. When you get to the higher trim levels, you get to the 3D automatic stereoscopic display that has three layers. When you turn on the 3D layer, it changes itself to give you more depth of field, so it can highlight certain parts of the gauge cluster that are important to see and then put other things in the background.
It's not trying to be gimmicky, it's trying to be more usable, but one of the side effects of this technology is that you have to combine an ultra-high resolution screen, like this guy is, and you have to keep your head in one place , so they use eye tracking sensors, infrared eye tracking sensors to make sure. which is trying to keep everything in focus based on where your eyes are, but you lose brightness, you lose luminosity when it's on and you also lose resolution and that's a byproduct of this type of display technology, so it's one of those if I don't like it the blurry effect that the 3D gives you, you can turn it off but it's an interesting implementation again, this car doesn't have it, but you can opt for everything else here to be very similar to the g80, the dashboard is a little bit different but it's very high quality everything feels very well put together the textures are great the infotainment screen is incredible the contrast of the black levels everything is fast everything feels good the space and the rear are very usable excellent for two adults and the hatch space It's also great for a larger sedan, if you want more than what the g80 has, this is more Americanized and we're going to talk more about that in the workshop, so let's go there, oh boy, here's a little taste of the soul, This is the

gv80

and us.
I just finished doing the g80 as well, however since then we spent a lot of time with our North American

genesis

rep, Jared, who helped us fill in some of the gaps we hadn't covered before, so let's talk about the first genesis of the business as The mark that most people have this concept with Korean cars is that they are cheaper because they can use inferior products, however the reality is that the way they save you money is that they are vertically integrated due to the Korean government and the way they possess all. facet of their automobile business they own the ships they ship on, they own the robotics, the manufacturing processes and the actual raw materials.
Hyundai is one of the largest steel manufacturers in the world, that's how they save you money, yes and that has a huge trickle-down effect, they can keep things in-house and that should also help them in terms of quality and integration of other products, for what when we look at things like the gearbox, the engine, most of the suspension parts, the brake systems. They are usually all made by Hyundai, including all the things you mentioned, which helps save the end user money. The next thing we should mention is that, unlike the G80, the GV80 was designed for the North American market.
The G80 is a car they designed for Korea in In fact, it is one of the best-selling cars in Korea, so many of the suspension settings differ slightly for North America and some of the design goals were adapted to a Korean buyer where the GV80, because the SUV trend here in North America, is designed for us, yes, and that's where the big differentiator is, from the genesis, from where they were to where they are now, this one is definitely intended in us and like Canada so what it does is it makes some fundamental differences in the exterior design and the overall suspension setup and how the car or the SUV feels so when we look at this we know that the gv80 and the g80 They are now on the m3 architecture, which is their code name or their code for their body structure, the m2 is the previous generation and how it has evolved is this has become more rigid has become lighter the gv80 uses five types different from high-strength steels where the g80 only uses four use high-strength and hot-stamped steels in the ring area and the rear part that is in the body and white reinforces the sliding roof or the panoramic roof area in the rear glass, which also helps reduce NVH.
In the previous generation m2 architecture, they had to use a lot of reinforcements and braces that they no longer have to use because there is a lot of high-strength steel. more aluminum here in terms of the hanging panels, hood door panels, things like that to save weight and then, at least on the g80, there's a lot more aluminum in the suspension, which I'm very surprised to see disappear on the gv80 and for me when you look at it, it's probably due to cost reduction and you'll know that although they share the same architecture, they don't share the same suspension architecture.
The front subframe is stamped steel. All front suspension components are now stamped steel or cast steel. What is aluminum here and what is a carryover is the design of the knuckles and the upper upper arm and of course the aluminum shock towers are the same, but the rear is another big change: it does not have an aluminum subframe. aluminum in the rear nor most of the suspension components. at least on the top half they are also steel so there has been a weight reduction here but not in the suspension and I think that's really important and you realize when you ride this too, the suspension tuning is not , I mean, it's similar. but it's not like they feel like two different cars in the way they drive.
We were talking before about this. You thought it was because of the increase in traffic, basically, because of the greater compression there is, but you notice that there is a little more. hardness and I don't know, I mean it feels stiffer although I don't think it is and some of this could just be the frequency or vibration being transmitted through the suspension to you, but there is still a lot of transmission. of similar frequency and vibration isolators and you see this, it's very rare to see it in a brake caliper, so if you get any vibration when braking, it cancels out some of those unwanted frequencies there, so they still put them here, still they put them all. the nvh panels, all the body adhesives hyundai has gone crazy with, there is so much body adhesive on those cars and it does, its very insulated inside, i just don't think it drives as good as the g80 and now that we have done it We had them back to back, now the other thing to talk about, as we said internally, the gearbox, we have the same gearbox in the gv80 and the g80 and they were carried over from the last generation uh g80 car and they have gone through three. different iterations of the gearbox have made them smaller, lighter and now they are better, more responsive than the previous generation, not by mechanical design, it is completely software and basically electronic tuning so this feels more like the zf from eight speed or something a little more competitive, however, as we are going to talk about, in driving it is not quite there, but it is much better than in the g80 sport with the 3.3 liter twin cylinder engine. turbo that was in the previous generation, the transmission is much quicker here and I think you will appreciate that if you have been in those cars, the next thing to talk about is the engine options: you have a 3.5 liter twin turbo which is compared to The 3.3 from the previous generation cars and you have a 2.5 liter turbo which, as I asked, is identical to all the other 2.5 liter turbos from Hyundai and Kia.
The tuning is different though because it runs on premium fuel so they may get a little more horsepower out of it and they may have changed some things like engine mounts and whatnot for a low end ph, but the last thing to talk about is that first it is a rear-wheel drive architecture, which means rear wheel. drive and then they can add all-wheel drive, which is still rear biased. In the case of this you have open differentials on all models no limited slip differentials on any of which they try to do some you know like electronic locking yeah.
So it's very similar to software in terms of braking torque vectoring. There is no real mechanical system. I will say that this feels more natural than the front-wheel drive all-wheel drive system that's supposed to be found in something like a Sorrento. to be the middle product in their portfolio where the gv80 and g80 are not supposed to be as comfortable as the g90 but they don't ride as hard or as sporty. I'm going to use the quotes like the g70 or the The future gv70 will be, but I really think that's it for the underbody cat, let's get into the road and see how this handles.
We are on the v6 genesis gv80 and have already spent time on the gv84 popper as well. So let's talk about both on this trip. I can not wait. I'm going to put this on sport mode with the checkered flag because I win. We have improved engine noise. Oh wow, I feel like I'm in a McLaren. Alright, first question: is the delta price over four poppers worth it? Yes, let's make that clear. Why, because it's better, it's a twin-turbo V6, it's more refined, it has more natural power delivery, it doesn't sound horrible, and of course you can do it. turn off the fake engine noise, which I would 100 percent do, but it's not that the four cylinder is bad, although I mean you and I threw out the four popper first and I told you I didn't find the v4 popper on this one.
Anywhere as offensive as I did on the g80, okay, so let's cover the basics of that, then that decision making process you can get the gv80 4 poppers for around 50,000. It's like 49.5 and a that price you are competing. with the acura mdx and what was the other rx and the rx as well as the rx license, the rx 350 and the mdx which are both v6, unfortunately that's where they would have an advantage but you get a lot more here. For me, in terms of architecture, it is not an architecture shared with all the other types of conventional cars, it is much quieter, it is much more refined, it feels like a luxury experience, so it is a bargain at 50, but we are noton one for 50,000. no we are on a mid sixty thousand dollar model that puts you in competition with the x5 q7 and the gle and here is my debate and if you equip an x5 to the level that this one is equipped with the same options, it's almost a ten thousand dollar delta and for once you and I have different opinions, do you think people will still buy the x5, yeah, where I think you could probably convince a suburbanite that this is the best vehicle, no no, it is not a better vehicle, the best purchase, yes, and there we had it.
In this debate I don't know what car I was in you know I basically knocked you out but the reality is once you get over 65k you can max this out around 73 which is a lot of money forFor a brand like this you know you look the japanese brands when they came out and did much better for cheaper and they are trying to do the same thing here but you mentioned this like in your neighborhood everyone is John Premium and everyone defaults to like grand theft auto everyone has a Mercedes or a BMW if you say hey you're npc characters, they're all white, silver and gray BMWs, Mercedes Audis, it's going to take a long time for them to penetrate that premium market buyer. that has more than 65 000 because when you spend more than 65 you are no longer cost conscious, you are not as cost conscious as when you spend 25 to 30.
So if you have money from BMW and Audi Mercedes or Money, not money , you will put one of these badges in your garage because you want to say that if you are a rich character and a mom, yes, then there is nothing wrong with this in many ways, it is better than the x5 in terms of ride isolation, quietness, refinement, um. It is lacking in other areas that you can tell me all about, so the first thing I am going to mention is this v6, let me step on the accelerator when you leave it in pure automatic, the shifts are actually very smooth, however, unlike the zf which is found in the audi and bmw, when you take any kind of manual control like we talked about in the g80, it lacks that sharpness and the same goes for the v6, it doesn't have the buttery smoothness that the b58 has in the x5 or even the three liter turbocharged application in the audi, i think most people aren't going to realize that to be fair i feel like it's pretty close, closer to audi, bmw is definitely on another level because their transmissions They can go from completely bland or, sorry, they can go from luxurious.
The cars almost feel like a sports car and that's the benefit they have, they can have a better dual personality than the genesis and the main thing about the genesis is that this is just a pure jeep, more GT luxury car feel, no It's on the sportier side we're talking about. The store said that their mentality in designing the gv80 was very different than the g80, but I think if you're looking for a cruiser and you're looking at that fifty thousand dollar price range, there's very, very little competition. better body control than a mdx or rx suspension tuning is close but not very similar the q7 has great ample insulation and if you get this in a four cylinder the four cylinder is not bad in fact it is not , it's not, it's great I really think it's a really strong product in the sub 50 range, yes it's a no-brainer, yes, no, if you spend 60, it's not like after that you have to go to the twin turbo V6, That makes a lot more sense.
I don't know, I'm a little mixed on this, I think it's great, I'm just trying to think about it from the buyers perspective, i.e. seeing this as what they would choose and I've really struggled. To really find any fault with this, aside from its quirkiness, this is one of the first genesis products to have its own unique identity, at least on the inside, it's unique to them, there's a lot less copy and paste than what they've made. here for their past efforts and I feel like they're starting to have a really strong identity and I think people are going to like that they're just not going to buy this instead of the German counterpart.
I think what this does well is it has that striking Bellagio Glo shine that is really in your face. I have money, lots of chrome and blingy and it's better, particularly in that 50k price range. I really don't have much of a problem with it at all. when you get it cheaper and I think people will probably enjoy this product, let's get into the final thoughts, jack, we'll talk about some of the pros and cons here. Alright, final thoughts on the genesis gv80, their first suv and very similar to the g80 with which it shares a platform, this is one of the best in its segment for around fifty thousand dollars in terms of insulation, refinement and handling in a car luxury, you can offer a sporty experience that doesn't try to be that and although this suv was designed more for the US market they have still combined many of the things you want from a high end luxury car, it is a huge value and when you look the features they include here compared to the German brands, it makes a lot more sense.
Now when you start going up in price, that's where you have to make a decision about what you really need and around 60 grand. The most important thing is the lexical audio that you can add. It performs very well compared to some of Harman's other generic counterparts. the audi and bmw machines and it's even better than most of mark levinson's audio on lexus products, the only thing is the basic performance, it's a bit bass heavy but you can modify some of that with the equalizer, but we'll throw the graphics here I already made a video on how to read them and explain the audio tests.
Now this for me doesn't work overall and it doesn't feel as refined as the g80 and I don't know if it's just because they raised it up, they've had to make some concessions and remove some of the suspension parts, all the aluminum material from the gv80 but again most people won't realize that unless you drive them back to back the last thing is the elephant in the dealership experience this is something hyundai and genesis frankly haven't done good job since they launched this brand three or four years ago they have been fighting with dealers hyundai dealers don't know how to treat customers Competitors do one of the most important things Hyundai company is trying to do while they fix it: introduce their concierge service which means they drop off a new car for you to test drive and then pick it up so you can skip the dealership experience entirely and that's the way I would do it.
About 80 percent of dealers participate in this, but they also do it to provide service, so if you want to experience the Genesis product or are thinking about buying it for real. It eliminates a lot of the bureaucracy or phobia that a lot of people have about this brand, but anyway, overall the gv80 is a great first all-rounder for them, if you don't spend more than 65,70,000, I think you're going to be to like a lot. this thanks for watching, see you next time
