some of the parts of the garbage truck. Come on! (laughs) First things first, the taxi. Oh! Look who it is, it's Tony. Hi, Tony! - Hello boy! (honk) - Oh, there, the cab, is where the garbage truck driver sits and drives the garbage truck. Oh! But it is very high. How do they get up there?

Let me teach you. Come on! These are the steps. (Blippi beeping) That's really funny. I love garbage

. Wow, look right here. You know what this is, it's a fire extinguisher, just in case there is a fire near or on top of the garbage truck. Garbage trucks are really safe. You'll soon learn that, because let me teach you. Here are some more safety features of the garbage truck, take a look. (chains jingling) Do you know what these are? They are tire chains, in case the road gets really icy and slippery you wrap them around the tires so the garbage truck can drive straight and not slip or slide.

Oh, look, reflective tape. This is so that the light hits and bounces and makes the truck shine really bright at night. Garbage trucks are very safe. Oh look, a spill kit. Another security feature. This yellow bag contains absorbent pads in case there are icky, disgusting things on the floor that you can't pick up or sweep into the garbage truck. Then you use the spill kit. Oh, come back here. I have something really cool to show you. Oh wow, hurry up, come here! Look! (laughs) Air bags! See this! (air whistle) Wow! Did you see that? The garbage truck just went down because of those airbags!

And you use those airbags right before you jump. (gasps) And look, this is how recycled products are thrown out of the garbage truck. This opens because these hydraulic cylinders push the back door open and then dump all the compressed products out of it. But first, we need a few things. How do you get in there? The coolest part. Let me show you, come on! Hurry up, let's go! (machinery whirring) Look at this. This is the gripping arm. Go, (squeaking) it's like a claw. He grabs the can, pulls it in, picks it up, and throws it into the hopper. (gasps) Look!

The hopper up there. And then it's pushed into the compression body right here, and it's compressed very hard, and then it's pulled back like I said. Wow, I love garbage trucks. (upbeat music) (engine noise) (engine hum) (brakes screech) (garbage crunch) (engine hum) Now that we know the parts of a garbage truck and how it works, let's learn about the differences between garbage and

recycling

. Trash that you can only use once and then throw away, things like cat litter, chewing gum, or even a dirty diaper, pee-ew! You only use those things once and then throw them away.

But by recycling it, you can use it many times, because it could be melted down or simply processed again to obtain the original product or something similar made from the same material, and if you can, it is recyclable. Let me show you some of the things I brought from home to recycle today. Oh, look at a jug of milk. That's plastic, you can recycle plastic. (slapping the jug) Then a can. (can crashing) An aluminum can. (can clinking) Oh, plastic bags. Oh, a spray bottle, that's plastic. (bottle bangs) Oh, a glass bottle, (glass breaking) and even a cardboard box. (banging boxes) All those things you can recycle.

Now that we know the difference between trash and recyclable goods, let's visit a recycling facility and sort some recyclable goods. We are at the recycling facility. First we need our safety equipment before entering. Here we go. Shiny vest, shiny helmet, safety glasses and suspenders. (upbeat music) Now that we have all the recyclables out of the truck, we can now sort them. This is going to be fun! All the recycled materials go up the conveyor belt and then they have to be sorted, because there are many different types, such as paper, plastic, cardboard, aluminum, tin. There are so many!

Here, let's order some. All recyclable products travel on these conveyor belts. Workers classify them according to different types of materials. And once it's sorted into one type of material, like this cardboard, it's crushed and compacted into this tight log of a material. Then a forklift arrives, picks it up, and transports it to another part of the warehouse. And when the material is ready to be transported on the back of a truck to go somewhere else to be recycled, a forklift loads it onto the back of a truck. It was so fun to see the inside of a real recycling facility.
