Galaxy S20 Impressions: New Year, New Samsung!

Feb 27, 2020
Hello, what's up guys? Here mkbhd and this is your first look at the new Samsung Galaxy S 20 and Galaxy S20 Plus. There is now a whole new line of Samsung phones available right now. They are clearly pulling out all the stops for 2020, so we have the Galaxy. s20, the

s20 plus and a new

galaxy

s20 ultra. I have posted a separate full video about that s20 ultra. It's the new pro version in their line, but that phone starts at 13.99 and not all of us have a g and a half to spend on a new phone, no matter how nice it is, these are the true successors to the galaxy s10 and s10 plus, the s20 and the s20 plus and for me this is actually one of the biggest strides I've seen Samsung make with their phones.

Literally everything you can imagine has been updated and they've made the biggest leaps in the most important areas of the phone like the screen, battery and cameras, so let's start with the screen. They are now 6.2 and 6.7 inch screens respectively. They are 120 hertz quad hd oled displays, so super high resolution hdr plus and super responsive high refresh rate displays, this is the train i have been telling you, all the flagships will go up in 2020 and to match that super high refresh rate that Samsung has also doubled the touch sensitivity to a 240Hz sampling rate, meaning it responds to touch input twice as fast and all the new speed difference is instantly noticeable now obviously still It's hard for me to show you in this YouTube video at 30fps, but yeah, literally everything from swiping across the UI to opening and closing apps to scrolling and finally, of course, playing games, everything will be seen. and it will feel smoother and I think Samsung has also tweaked some of these animations in a UI to be a little bit shorter and snappier so you can tell them apart easily.

More Interesting Facts About,

It feels much smoother than 60 hertz and I can also tell the difference with 90, which I have become accustomed to. Hi Editor Marquez, here real quick with a little message and a little asterisk, so the Galaxy S20s at 120 hertz will actually be limited to 1080p, not 1440p full resolution, so this is something I discovered later after briefing and which I didn't even notice while using it, but if you take the phone out of the box it will be at 1440p and 60hz and when you go into settings to change it and move it to 120hz it will lock it at 1080p probably to save battery and power and things like that little asterisk about what we've learned about the phone, but I thought I'd let you know in the video, so I'm very happy with the screen and on top of everything, there's now a center punch hole that you can see, which you actually prefer because unlike the corners, there's usually nothing blocked in the middle and it's flatter now, which is very different.

Samsung because they have always been the ones pushing the curved glass that melts on the sides, but hey, new decade, new Samsung, now this screen doesn't melt as much or more or less on the edge, it is much flatter and, in my opinion, much more usable and they still have the ultrasonic fingerprint reader, of course, under the screen. Now let's talk about the battery for a second. They've also increased the battery size on all of these phones by a healthy amount, making it a 4000 milliamp hour battery in a smaller model. s20 and a 4,500 milliamp hour battery in the s20 plus, so they're not trying to make these phones super thin, which is great, they're actually just a tiny bit thicker, but that's probably also because with a huge bright 120 hertz screen, We'll want all the battery we can get, so this is something we'll have to test, of course, when we receive the phone for the full review, but at least I'm glad to see on the spec sheet cells much bigger and also. there's still 25 watt fast charging with that charger included in the box and wireless charging too, uh and while we're at it let's get to the spec boom, there you have a high end CPU and a crazy 12 gigabytes of RAM in all them, IP68 expandable storage. certified, I mean these phones are complete on the spec sheet, they are not as extravagant as the s20 ultra, but they still don't have major shortcomings as you would expect from a Samsung flagship and the entire line also supports 5g, but I don't think this is a big game changer, as much as some people try to make it seem like the s20 and s20 also won't do millimeter waves so it only sub 6 5g so it will say 5g on the corner, but we talked about this. in a previous video it will only be up to about 20 faster than a good 4g on a good day so I wouldn't buy this phone just for the 5g so anyway let's get to the last and probably most important new piece of these new phones. with the galaxy s20 and those are the cameras, they are a big focus for Samsung on these new phones this

year

, pun intended and I haven't seen the unboxing slides yet.

I'm recording this early, but I'd be willing to bet. which probably half of them, at least half, are about cameras, so you're looking at a new triple camera setup for the s20 and the s20 plus has room for an additional depth sensor, but otherwise, here they are the same with a new 12 megapixel. main sensor at f 1.8, then there is a 3x 64 megapixel telephoto camera at f2 and a 12 megapixel ultra wide angle at f 2.2 and they are all physically larger sensors than last

year

, which is great for almost everything, sensitivity to light, low light performance and anything else, basically. to do with photography and there are some serious zoom capabilities, not just optical zoom, but also software that gives you a 10x multiplier that will give you a comfortable 30x hybrid zoom and I know this is not a video about the ultra, but That phone has a 10x zoom. zoom, which means hybrid zoom with software will go up to a hundred x, which is ridiculous, but they're going to call this whole thing space zoom.
I could have called it galactic zoom, but I guess that works too, but the icing on the cake. All are capable of recording 8k 24fps video across the entire line. Now 8k video on a smartphone camera sounds amazing, it sounds like something I put on my dream phone, but there's a problem. 4k was already big, but 8k video is 33 megapixels per frame, which is awesome because you can get the flexibility of being able to take 33 megapixel stills from a video, but to do that you have to have a sensor window big enough to to record 8k videos, which means you need at least a 33 megapixel sensor. but the main camera on these phones, as I mentioned, is that 12 megapixel sensor, it's the 3x telephoto lens, which is 64 megapixels, so when you go into the settings and change the video resolution to 8k like I did, that it's going to come from that telephoto camera, not the main camera, so it's going to intervene a little bit, as you can see, which definitely leaves it a little bit on the convenience side, plus 8k doesn't support autofocus tracking or video effects, a few things to keep in mind, as it says here in the settings, so technically they shoot 8k yes, but it's not coming from the main sensor, it's built in, just a little more to think about when maxing out the video on these phones, so it's not like the dream world where we can stream 8k over 5g to youtube without even thinking about it.
I'm not there yet, either way, as you can see with the rest of this phone, there's not much I don't like, even a lot of the little things they changed. I like them too. They changed the situation of the buttons, so now the buttons have been moved to the back. to the right side and the dedicated bixby button disappeared. They are also fairly light phones despite their size and larger batteries. I was impressed with how good they feel in the hand and how light they are compared to others. Samsung's large phones and One UI 2.0 also have some interesting improvements.
I'd be lying if I said I loved it. It's still far from my favorite version of Android, but there are still things like creating a zoom preview in the camera app. when you zoom in really far you still get that preview in the top left of what you're doing which is super useful and there are other things like Spotify now built into Bixby routines and Google Duo HD video chat built in natively. the marker and some other things like the new subtle animations and there's also a new single shot mode in the camera, it's like the opposite of pro mode basically, instead of doing all the hard work of taking multiple photos and videos, you just you press the shutter button. once and point it at some action and it will decide for you when to take photos and videos based on you knowing when eyes are open and faces are smiling and things that look interesting, but this is not something I think I will do.
Have you ever used it, call me crazy, but I like to take the photos myself, but at the end of the day, if you go back and look at all this, you get the spec sheet and everything they've done with this phone, it's hard to find something you can consider. a weakness or a complaint or a drawback or something bad about this phone other than maybe the price now of course a lot of this is on paper and based on the two hours I spent with this phone getting these images but Honestly, I'm excited to review this phone, definitely subscribe to be among the first to see it when it comes out, if you haven't already Yes, is it too early to call Samsung a favorite for the most improved award based on alone How many things are there? best about this phone, I don't know what to think either way, thanks for watching and definitely check out the first video link of the galaxy s20 ultra with a like button, if you haven't seen it yet, check it out too. the next peace
