May 01, 2020
welcome to tonight's

midnight

quilt

show

. I'm getting an early start on my Thanksgiving dinner, and to pass the time in the meantime, I'm working on an easy

quilt

with a twist. Also, I have a bonus video that will

show

you a technique you've been asking for here's a hint, let's get to it, let's get this pun on cooking with quilts completely intended. The pattern I'm going to work on today is that my hair looks good. Surely the pattern we are going to work on today is called Four

square

. by Monique Dillard I'm using unlimited solids and these beautiful colors will really show off my quilting, which I mean come on, it's what I enjoy and then this pattern has a fun twist which is quarter

square

triangles made of gray and white. are going to make a really complex looking sash, let's cut it.

I'm going to carve this fabric. I guess it's not really carved fabric. You carve turkey, let's say I'm going to dice it like a carrot, but basically I just need to cut a little bit. squares some larger squares and some small ones or squares it just so happens I have a six and a half inch ruler they need to be six and a half inch strips okay my Foursquare pieces are cut and now I'm going to cut the gray and the white to make my quarter square triangles and I'm going to cut them just like I cut the celery for the filling.

More Interesting Facts About,

I put the filling in there, okay, so these are going to be cut into

four

and a half inch squares and then I'm going to cut them. put them diagonally to give me my triangles and then, like a chef swapped his knife for a different one. I'm going to change this to a smaller one to make my cut even faster. We should have like a knife block for the rulers, just lay them out. there and you can take them out. I think it would be very fun. I'll cut out some gray squares from time to time, and then my triangles smell funny.

This is actually the first time I've made Thanksgiving dinner. Normally I can't. I can't help it, I'm almost 40 years old and both my mom and mother-in-law like to make Thanksgiving dinner, but this time I decide it's time to be an adult. I'll try, I just hope you don't. I know it looks bad and to make trimming easier I'm going to grab my rotating mat to cut it nice and quick and all I have to do is cut this diagonally both ways and I have some stacked up, I don't want to make too many at once so I don't They want to move on me, but I don't want to cut them all.

I'm going to rotate them and then cut them again and hey, it's a random fact of worthless information, you can't cut vegetables. In this, you can use her as a lazy Susan, which I think would be nice in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner. Put that salt and pepper stuff in here. I also need some white ones and I'm going to use these. to make the quarter square triangles that will make a really interesting frame for my quilt, okay, smell something, what if one of the kids is playing there and my cutting is really easy, so I love this pattern.
I really feel like I've got this, this kind of thing multitasking, crisis averted, turkeys, okay, sweet potatoes, no sorry, the buns are in the oven, sorry, I'm just trying to get back into the mindset of things, there was a lot. smoke last night but okay so let's get to work on

patch

four

which is just a nice basic block so I'm going to sew them together I'm going to sew these two and then those two and then I'm going to sew them all together and you know what's great about This will be seen exactly. As it's supposed to look, I won't have to uninvite anyone to Thanksgiving dinner because this block will be perfect.
The nice thing about this pattern is that it's how I want it to look, so if I want to change it and have the pink ones on. one side or the orange on the other, it doesn't matter, I just need four large blocks sewn one block down, but before I move on to the rest, I'll show you how to make the strange square triangles that will form above the frame of our quilt they will look like this, with short sides together. I don't want to put the long sides together because then I'll end up with a half square triangle, which is great, but it's not what we need for this particular one.
Quilt the short sides together so that the quarter inch seam along the side I went ahead and chain stitched those which meant I didn't break the thread in the middle and the nice thing about this is that it keeps them together in clumps. two, so when I'm ready to put them together, I don't have to cut it out, I can just fold it over itself and sew it, and I really love how it keeps them together, so when I'm making a bunch I can already put them together. exactly how they should go I wish I could claim credit for that trick but I can't, someone very wise taught me that now I'm going to sew long down the middle and there is a beautiful quarter square triangle, let's move on. and make another one and the second pair is done normally, you can press this, but I'm just going to press it with my pinky finger and I'm going to put them in the opposite direction that way when I sew them together.
They nest really well and that's what's going to help give me that perfect spot in the middle, so as they go this way you can see they're going to give you a nice nested seam, it's like turkey and stuffing together or biscuits and butter. or smoke alarms and fire extinguishers, I mean, right off the top of my head. I have a lot more to do, but what I want to do real quick is show you how I press them, cut them out, and get them all nice and ready. My little miniature iron and I'm going to press this carefully whenever you work with triangles, some of your edges may be a little stretchy so I just want to be very careful, press it nice and flat.
My turkey may not be as juicy as my mom's, but there will be some matching stitches on this quilt and that's enough with these blocks. I need to trim them to three and a half inches square to get my ruler, which is not the right size, but I use a little bit of washi tape to make it the right size and this diagonal line here is perfect because I can line it up with my eye and that will help me make sure I don't get a crooked quarter square triangle, although that might be a Good idea, I like it, so I'm going to carefully trim this on one side and then the other.
That's definitely where this rotating mat comes in handy, probably worrying too much about this, but I want it to be perfect. The result is a nice three and a half inch square quarter square triangle. I'm going to do the same thing on the other one, wait, I have some and I even made some flying geese and I didn't show you how it goes together, but I have an episode. from the late night quilt show where I made the wallflower quilt and you can see exactly how they come together so check it out and I'm sitting here feeling so proud of myself.
Martha Stewart has nothing on me, well now I'm going to put this together and make the frame strips for my block, so I have to admit there's something fun about the idea of a really simple block in a more complex way, like that flips the script a little bit, so what's going to happen is that I'm going to take my four quarter square triangles and that's going to be the join between those four simple

patch

blocks. Now sewing them together is easy, all I have to do is put them together. I'm going to try very carefully to make sure those gray ones are touching as much as possible and I try to have a precise quarter inch seam so that I don't have any of them come off a little bit and the same thing with the second set and when I open them you can see I'm starting. to get that square where it meets to give it a checkerboard look and then I'll just put those two units together.
There I have the strip that will go between my blocks, but I need to press it before I can't do anything else with it. I have a lot of fabric binding at these points and what I want to do is be very careful while ironing and I'm going to press it open, which will help relieve some of the bulk at those points. I know when it comes to quilters we have very strong opinions about how we like to press. I know some of you will only press to one side, some of you will only press open, honestly I for one am impressed if I press, but For this particular type of quilt, I really want to lighten all that bulk, it will make the whole process free motion quilting easier and even if you are not quilting your quilt your long frame will definitely appreciate it and there is a frame, I only have three.
There's more left and I'm done with all the sashes on quilts stuff, does that sound good? Wait, let me check, let me check the pattern, oh, never mind, I have like fifty-four and a half more to do and that means I need to start sewing, so Wow, I've been super productive. I finished my fashion pieces. I turned the turkey over. I have earned enough in the kitchen. I've even sewn a couple of rows together, so I want to show you where. We are in this moment. I have my frame pieces between my blocks. This looks great and then you can see I also have the frame strips on each side so it's like frame, frame and the fun thing I'm going to get. these cornerstones here that will make that pop of color come out nicely, this quilt won't sell itself so I better put these rows together, the center of this quilt is finished, all I have to do is add those borders and it will be the same beautiful gray as these squares, wide enough to be able to put something fun on.
The quilting designs are also gray on the sides, so all I have to do is put the edges on and fill the base of my drink with this quilt face. the turkey and I'll finish this off nicely, obviously, I'm ready to start quilting. I have my quilt sandwich sprayed and ready to go. I didn't show it to you in this video, but I did put together a free bonus video where you can watch me basting this quilt sandwich with tips on how you can base your own quilts and you can find the information about it in the description box below and, Hey, since you're already headed that way, you might as well subscribe so you can Don't miss out on this Midnight Quilt, Show Kindness.
I'm ready to start quilting and what I have in my head, which I think would be super fun, is here's the four patch block quilt pattern that's beautiful and nice and fun. room for machine quilting, which we know I love, but what I thought would be cool is to create these sub patterns, so instead of closing this block anyway, I'm going to look at these four blocks and quilt them with the same design. just think that will give you a fun different sub pattern and will keep me entertained while I wait for my turkey to finish cooking so I'm going to look at this quilt as an opportunity to quilt a lot of different ones everywhere it's just kind of an experiment.
I think in these four squares I'm going to quote the spiral hook meander, which is really one of my favorites. This particular design will start with a swirl or a line that curves back on itself. but before I finish that swirl and move on to the next one, I'm going to add just a little hook to it and I'm going to echo back and then I'm going to echo and I'm going to finish my swirl and when I'm ready to do the next one, I'm just going to go straight to my next swirl and my hook and continue with it, it sure is good to get to the part of the quilting where I can just relax and let my brain go on autopilot, this is where I assure myself that even if the turkey doesn't turn out well, everything it will be OK.
My sister-in-law will bring her green bean casserole, which is the best. And my 14-year-old son Drake knows how to make a delicious pumpkin roll. At least we'll have green beans and pumpkin roll. Oh, and quilted comforters. Now I always say that 80% of quilting is just knowing where you're going. I mean, I totally made that stat up, but it seems like it could be true and I know I wanted to end up in this corner. so I can use the quilting to move on to the next one in these fantastic triangles, I'm going to make a continuous curve because well, that's what I love to do.
I'm going to go ahead and just pick that up, nothing to help me get there. onto my next area and then I'll continue quilting my swivel hook. I am now quilting this squirrel hook. I'm already thinking about what other quilting designs I want to use on this date, but you don't have to think. It's very difficult because I've put together some free quilting diagrams that you can download and see exactly how I'm going to cite this and you can find out how to do it in the description box below. Be sure to check them out because I have two different versions, an all-nighter version that takes a little more time or an early turn for those of you who just want to quilt the quilt well.
I'm going to finish this and show you what it looks like when it's done. The most important question tonight is: does this hat make my butt look big? Just kidding, thank you very much for joining me. I had a lot of fun working on the four patch quilt with that sash and quarter square triangle quilting. It was incredibly fun. I don't know if anyone else can see the secondary patterns, but I love them and find them fun, and don't forget I have the free bonus video, so check it out for tips on how to baste your quilts for quilting amachine.
