Foil Die Cutting Techniques

Jun 08, 2021
Hello and welcome, I'm Jennifer McGuire. Lately I have received many requests to apply more

foil

ing

techniques

. Now

foil

ing is something that will give you great shine and unique results on your cards and today I'm combining it with die

cutting

. I've done some similar

techniques

in the past, but today is definitely my favorite after trying a ton of different things. I have a few different techniques to share with you. The first one I did in most of my examples is definitely my favorite. link here to a video I've made in the past for similar looks where you don't need a laminator for most of the techniques you do nowadays, but I'm telling you the results are definitely worth it and I'll talk about what to do if you don't have one as you can see, I have a ton of examples to share with you today because I had a lot of fun with this technique.
foil die cutting techniques
Well let's start with my favorite technique and that's where I create a template from my dies so here I have a bunch of cardstock pieces where I went ahead and cut them out with some dies and I'll talk about those dies later. You can use any cardstock for this. I should have used leftovers and I didn't think about it at the time. because again, we only use them as templates and not in our project, so no matter what color they are now, sometimes when you run material with a die through your die

cutting

machine, the paper warps a little, which sometimes it happens esp. with intricate die cuts, if you see warping, I recommend just running it through a laminator, just set the heat and the laminator, it will smooth it out and you'll have perfectly flat cardstock, so that's a trick any time you have warped paper, just use your laminator. and by the way, this is one of my favorite uses of a laminator in my craft room.

foil die cutting techniques...

Okay, now I wanted to create one more template before I get into the technique and this time I'm using the Simon Says Stamp Rounded Alphabet Die Set which I really like. style of these letters and measure just under an inch tall, making them perfect for a card. I wanted to show you the trick I did to get the perfect space for the sentiment that says hello, which I have here on my Place one piece of tape facing up and I have two other pieces of tape holding it on the ends. I'm placing my letters on the masking tape and you can see the sharp edges facing down.

I need two l's for the word hello, but I only have one hello, die, so here's a trick I do. Many people ask me about this. I find another letter that has the same width and use it as a place, so here I use the f in place for the l for the second l. so let's say you need another one or you could use a q just find a die that's a similar size. Now I'm taking another piece of ribbon and transferring all of those letter die cuts onto that ribbon so it's ready to die cut as soon as I remove it.

However, I want to add the word u underneath, so I'm putting my masking tape face up again here and I'm making the word you, but I decided to use a heart instead of the o and the word you, so now I'm picking this up and I'm focusing. I see that I have the grid on my work surface. Here I'm centering the u in that grid. Now I'm centering the greeting on top and now I can have the greeting and use it. stacked and nice and centered so I can transfer the u now to that ribbon and now I have this ready to die cut onto my card and everything is centered and aligned perfectly.
By the way, I use a lot of tape on this, but I can reuse it. Those pieces a lot of times now I'm putting an anti-static powder tool on my tape so it's not as sticky. I don't need it to be super sticky and I just place it on a piece of cardstock and go. via my die cutting machine, any die cutting machine would work but today I'm using my gemini junior, now I can carefully remove the tape keeping the dies in place and now we just have to make the l so I can carefully remove it. dies, there is still a print on my purple ribbon so I know where to put it back if I want to use those dies again to die cut more pieces that say hello, so now I have a hello template to go with all my other dies.
I cut out the stencils that I did right, so let's do the first technique and this is where we add aluminum foil using stencils. Now when I want to use insoles these days, I use Thermo Web Pixie spray and spray it on the back of the insole I do it on. a box, I actually take the box outside to do it and you just put a light layer of this on the back of your stencil. Now my templates are pieces of cardstock that are die cut today, but this works with regular templates too, just let them dry. for a minute and that gives it a little bit of temporary adhesion so you don't have to tape the stencil to the paper and this makes a big difference, especially when you apply anything over a complex stencil, so it's a pretty complex task . stencil here and because we put the adhesive on the back all that intricate part stays flat so we can easily apply something over it and get a clean look so it's hard to see here but I put my die cut heart stencil which is just a card. piece of cardstock die cut from a piece of white cardstock.
I am applying thermaweb thermo transfer gel. This is a great, affordable product that is wonderful for foiling. I'm putting a generous amount over the open areas of my stencil and now I'm Taking a friend Thermoweb stencil and dragging it to remove the excess and smooth it out and I can put the rest back into the bottle. Now I can carefully remove my DIY stencil and there you can see the transfer gel on my cardstock, if any. they're bubbles, just blow them with a little bit of air, so I blow directly on them, pop the bubbles and then you need to set them aside to dry for about an hour, so let's make some more.
This is the "hello u" template I created earlier. Put the center of the o there too, everything has that pixie spray on the back so it stays nice while we apply the transfer gel on top. Now when I apply the transfer gel, you can use a piece of paper. I have this one. an old putty knife here and I put in a pretty generous amount like I mentioned because I really want to fill all the openings so that template dude is the coolest tool now I thought it was something I didn't really need but it is.
Great for taking a clean swipe across your project to smooth it out and fill all areas evenly. I really find it useful, but you can definitely use a ruler or some type of ruler to drag around your project. This is a little flexible so I think it works great for this, but you can use anything you have on hand with a ruler, always make sure to clean your templates if you have non-cardstock templates and all your tools so that nothing dries in them. so I'm going to continue using these templates that I created earlier by die cutting cardstock and I'm going to apply transfer gel over the opening and then I'm going to use my straight edge to make a smooth motion and get nice even results.
Now this will be white when wet and then turns clear when it dries. I thought I'd make a real template example. This is a simon says: stamp all the template of my heart. I put the pixie spray on the back and then apply the transfer gel on top and then I can wipe off the excess. Now I will say that I tried other products besides the transfer gel. That's all I found that works for the foiling technique and it works great because you're doing it. If you place it on a stencil, you get dimension in your foiling, which is great.
Well now, after cleaning everything and letting all these pieces dry, it's time to foil and this gives amazing results. Let's start with the background we just created. let it dry completely and I'm going to apply decorative thermal foil that I'm using for all of today's examples. This first one is the decorative rainbow foil that really has great results and I'm going to put it on a folded piece of paper. Parchment with the patterned side facing up and the fancy foil side facing up. I then run that fold first through a laminator which I'll attach to the laminator I use.
It takes a few minutes to pass, but apply heat and pressure. and look at the beautiful transfer you get from that foil on any area where you applied the gel. It's messy around the edges because of how I made my template, but it's okay, I can trim the excess and there you see the beautiful foil. results and it actually increased a little bit because we used the transfer gel, I cut it out and added it to a black note card that I made with Hero Arts black cardstock, the best black cardstock that measures four and a quarter by four and a quarter in the center I used a stacked I love you die cut and left this card very simple so that beautiful foil would shine through.
Now I like this foil so much that I decided to use it again this time in the "hello you" background. which I made on black cardstock after running it through my laminator, you can see the transfer I get and it looks great against the black. If you get aluminum foil where you don't want it, you can use a craft or monkey knife. sand eraser to remove it and I'll show you a little bit later so I cut it out and glued it onto some shiny gold cardstock and then onto a four and a quarter by five and a half inch white card stock.
I decided to keep this. very simple as there is a lot of glitter in the foil we use, so here you can see how you can create a stencil from any die and then apply the transfer gel on it, then the foil and get great results, so here's another example. I once did the transfer gel on a stencil I created with Simon Says Stamp Blooming Circle Die and on top of that I applied Gina K Sparkly Silver Foil, which is one of my favorites. Here you can see how I got a little foil where I didn't want it and all I'm doing is just gently scraping it off and no one will ever know, so there you can see the dimensional foil we get with this now to finish this card.
I used the new Simon Says leaf stamp. frame stamp set, such a beautiful set and I thought Always Here for You would fit perfectly in the center of the wreath we just created after white heat etching the sentiment. I'm using gina k connect glue to add midnight blue crystals from Studio Katya. in the center of my laminated flowers, I really like how the blue tint of these gems matches the Hero Arts Adriatic cardstock I used on this card, so here's a closer look at the final result and how beautiful that is shiny silver paper, please note there.
There are many colors of foil and many different finishes, but I think shiny silver is one that works on a variety of cards. You can also see here how there's a little bit of dimension to the foil because we used the transfer gel on a stencil, okay? The following example shows how to add different colors to your foiling to get the look you see here now. In this case, I started with white cardstock where I placed the transfer gel over a stencil I created with the simon says stamp filigree message circle die which is one of my new favorites.
I put silver decorative foil on top and ran it through my laminator. There you can see the results of the aluminum foil that we get now. What I'm doing is using copic markers to color the foil. Now I'll tell you. You can use any type of permanent marker, so markers will work for this too. You want to use the darkest color you can use because it ends up being lighter on the foil, so I can get messy because I have a trick. to share with you after I finish coloring all the foil, I cut out the piece, it doesn't have to be that big and put liquid adhesive around the foil.
Then I have another four by five piece of white cardstock and a quarter where I use the same simon says stamp circular message filigree die and I'm going to place this on top of my foil on the foil lining it up to hide all my colors messed up and now I can see once again the stitch detail that this die has to offer and I like that that kind of embossed foiling fills the openings in the cardstock that we put on top. Well, I have another fun trick for you this time: adding the sentiment to the card.
This is the Simon says cz stamp. The Stop Drop Party stamp designs put some fun and playful feelings in there. I chose one and I'm placing it on my panel here in my Misti stamping tool. Now I wanted to make sure I had stamped this directly and that it looked good before I did it. my card, so here's my trick: I take some clear packaging, just some thin clear packaging that I had in the recycling and I'm inking my stamp with whatever ink I'm going to use, which happens to be black ink, and I stamp it. the package and there I can see andmaking sure it's straight and centered and all that before I go ahead and stamp it on my paper.
This is a trick I use quite often off screen just to save time, but I think it's great when I have feelings like this, okay, now I've cut out my panel and I'm putting some craft foam on the back. , this is white craft foam, this will give it a nice raised dimension, and it's quick to make and I'm gluing this on a four and a quarter by five and a half inch card simon says stamp a fog note card when i have colors bright ones like this, I often like to put that card on a fog note card, it balances out, it's nice soft gray color, so there you can see the colorful embossing that we have that fills in all those open die cut spots .
Nowadays I use a lot of intricate filigree type dies but you can do these techniques with any die you have, here is another example of how to add your own color to foil this time I use the simon says stamp blooming circle die so I have my transfer gel on this piece of white cardstock, it's a little hard to see there, it's facing up towards the camera and on top of this I'm putting Thermo Web Brutus Monroe Silver Sketch Decorative Sheet, putting it on my folded parchment and running it through my laminator, which provides the heat and pressure.
I then added color to all the foiled areas with my copic markers like I did in my last example. You can see I made a big mess, that doesn't matter, it doesn't take long to add that color and then I'm adding. liquid adhesive around the laminated areas and I have this panel ready here I use this same die and I stamped hello in the center of the simon dice stamp leaf frame stamp set so you can see how I have that embossed color foil filling in To the die cut panel we put on top, I added some white pearls to the center of the flowers, cut out my panel and put it on a note card I made with Simon Says Stamp Fog Cardstock once again, it's four and a quarter by five and a half Me I really like how I can add different colors to my foil.
Use permanent pens. Well, my next example I wanted to show you that you can even add patterns to your background when you do this foil technique. In this case, once again. I used the Simon Says Stamp Filigree Message Circle Die and applied the transfer gel over the stencil I made with that die, let it dry, then put the teal decorative foil on top and then ran it through my laminator and that It's the piece you see on the left just like I've done many times in this video. On the right I have a panel that I cut with the same die and on top I'm putting a circular mask on it just for masking. that center area, this is simon says stamp sea glass cardstock and on top of that I'm stamping with simon says stamp sea glass ink simon says stamp I care about you stamp background, so this will give it a nice tone on tone that I use This glass color navy is a lot so I'm stamping the ink one more time just to get a double stamp, a darker color removing the mask and there we have our front panel with some stampings.
I like to do the stamping here instead of the top of my foil, so now I'm putting a little bit of adhesive on the back of this panel and then we'll line it up with our piece of foil, this will allow the foil foil fill the open areas of our die cut and we can see the details of the stitch and our stamping on the front panel. After adding this to a note card, it's time to add our sentiment to the center. I decided to use Simon's stamp sentiment strips. There are two different packages you can get and they are full.
With many pre-printed sentiments, simply cut out the one you want and you can add it to your card. These are printed with a laser jet printer. If you print with a laser jet printer, nothing more, just a laser jet that you can foil. that impression, so I'm putting this between my parchment paper with aluminum foil on top running it through my laminator and there we have a frustrated feeling. You can print your own sentiments using a laser printer if you have one or you can simply purchase these sentiments. strips that print for you and you can add foil, you need a laminator to give you the heat and pressure to transfer that foil and I use the same foil that I used for the card you see above, by the way, Here's a little trick to add dimension behind your thin sentiment strips.
What I like to do instead of using a thin strip of craft foam is cut three cardstock strips from scrap cardstock that are a little narrower than our sentiment strip and stack them. all on the back of the sentiment strip to give a strong dimension to that little thin strip and then we can add it to our card. I think liquid adhesive works great for this and allows you to make sure you have it centered when you stick it on. down, so here's the final card. I added some little pearls around our foiling and stamped the same simon says u-materia stamp on our matching envelope.
Here's another quick example I made where I used the simon says stamp sentiment strip this time. I used teal foil on the sentiment, you can see it has glitter to it now this card was made using the Simon Says stamped filigree heart die along with thermo web rainbow decorative foil so this is not the tattered one , it's just regular rainbow foil. and it was made the same as the other examples, it is a smaller card, it measures three and a half by five and a half. Next, I wanted to show a quick example that this technique is also great for edge dies.
Let's make this card here. On the right I have my transfer gel onto my white cardstock using the simon dice stamp filigree border die on top of the dried gel. I put that torn rainbow decorative sheet that I used earlier, put it on the folded parchment and ran it through my laminator and there you can see the transfer of that beautiful rainbow, just beautiful. I could have gotten a similar look using my copic markers on silver foil, but this makes it easy. I have some foil in areas I don't want it, so I just used my craft knife and my sand eraser to scrape that off, but I actually ended up deciding I wanted to put another die-cut panel on top like we've been doing since This border die offers faux stitching details, so you can leave it alone. without the die cut panel on top or if you have a detailed die like this you can put the die cut panel on top and the foil rises up and fills in the areas.
I decided I really wanted to keep this very simple so I just added that same sentiment from the cz design simon says stamp stop fall and party stamp set now here is a similar design this time I used adriatic cardstock from hero arts instead of white and used thermo web opal decorative sheet that is just beautiful, the opal look is beautiful in real life and you just don't see it in the video, I apologize for that, I applied the opal decorative sheet over our transfer gel and I'm going to continue Go ahead and align it here so you can see how the raised area was foiled.
Fill that die-cut panel like we did in the last example; However, if you don't have a laminator and want to have a similar look, you can simply put adhesive on the back of the die-cut panel and tape a piece of that down. foil, so I'm not actually foiling, I'm just putting the foil behind the die cut opening and that foil will show through, you can see the beautiful results, it looks very nice. I just like the elevated look of using the transfer gel and stuff. fill in the die cut openings but you have that option if you don't have a laminator and look again at the other video I made where I show how to foil without a laminator for techniques similar to the last one but here I used the transfer the gel laminated piece and place it behind our die cut panel and I white heat embossed a simple sentiment hello now that sentiment is from this new stamp set simon says it has beautiful daisy images and I will be using this in a video very soon well my next two cards show how you can Use the small pieces of foil you have leftover to create some foiled cards.
Now in this case, I used the Simon Says Stamped Filigree Butterfly Die. I created that stencil and applied the transfer gel over it. It's dry now I have my parchment folded and I have four pieces of aluminum foil left over. I keep them all together in a container and I'm putting the four pieces on my transfer gel. It's hard to see there, but they can overlap. These pieces of aluminum foil and whatever is in contact with the gel is the color that will transfer, so I decided to put four different colors. Those are all Gina K Shimmer decorative sheets, which are amazing.
I ran them through my laminator and here are the results. I made a die. I cut out the panel I put on top to get my little stitch details and added a silver sentiment strip from Simon Says stamp in the center. It's very simple, but because I used four different colors of shiny decorative foil, it has a lot of interest. And by the way, thermo web manufactures the decorative sheets of gina k and brutus monroe, so they are all from thermoweb and of high quality. Well, here's another example where I used different small pieces of aluminum foil that I had left over for this one.
I used the die. That coordinates with the Simon Says stamp set so you can see the happy birthday there. I cut it out of cardstock like before and used it as a template to place the transfer gel on once it was dry. I have small remains. of aluminum foil left over here and I'm putting a different piece of aluminum foil on each letter, you can see the letters there, this took a little time and patience because I accidentally messed them all up when I folded my parchment, but if you're careful you can keep them still run them through your laminator and the foil will transfer to all those letters and I really like how it looks so I cut it out and added it to a piece of black cardstock and then onto a simon fog note card says stamp i stamped the simon dice circle doodle stamp just for a bit of interest in the background I decided not to add anything else to this to allow those beautiful little pieces of foil to shine through ok my next two examples show another way to die cut aluminum foil.
In this case, my background, the flower, was done as I showed you before, but look at that golden circle. For that one I used a fun product from Thermal Web, which is toner sheets, now pre-printed toner sheets. the ones I have don't have adhesive on the back, they sell a toner sheet which I wish I had because when you die cut it and laminate it all you have to do is remove the backing and add it. Well, your card, I cut a circle out of the toner sheet, that's what you see here, and put some gold paper on top.
I'm running it through my laminator like before and that paper is transferred to our die cut, so I created a simple. Circle foil die cut, but you can create a die cut from any die you have and foil it now. Here I created a background using the Simon Says Stamped Filigree Flower Die. I had laminated my transfer gel with silver foil and colored it. with copic markers, this is how I created that background just like I showed you before, but I added my circular foil die cut in the center along with a sentiment from the daisy bouquet stamp set so you can see how the foil shines when you put it on. you use transfer gel or toner sheets.
Now my last example shows using those toner sheets once again to create a foil die cut. This shows that you can do this with pretty much any die you have, including complex sentiments like this one, so I used the simon says stamp, you're doing amazing, die and cut it out of the toner sheet. I'm adding a little piece of that rainbow foil on top. I'll put it on the folded parchment and run it through my hot laminator when it arrives. I'll have that foil covering the entire die cut, it's just beautiful. Now I kept this card pretty simple.
I stamped the simon says stamp circle bat doodle background dies with simon says stamp mist ink and then I just glued my little die cut on top remember there is a toner sheet with the peel and stick so all you would have to do is peel and stick it . I just don't have that so I use liquid glue to add my die cutting. I also put a few little colored gems around it, but I kept it simple so the shine and shine of the foil die cut would show through, so those are a couple of different ways to do foil die cut again.
Check out that other video for more ideas. I know this requires something specific. products for these techniques, such as transfer gel andtoner sheets, but I think it's worth it if you want to get more out of your laminating techniques and any dies you may have, so it's another fun way to use these products if you're interested in any of them, they're linked below so you can see them. In between are a couple more videos for you to watch. I appreciate the time you spent with me once again and we will see you again very soon. the way my next video will show foiling with stamping see you then
