Jun 07, 2021
Hey guys, welcome back to Furniture Flipping Teacher if you're new here, my name is Lauren and I'm a full time Kindergarten teacher who flips furniture to make a profit to put directly toward my student loan debt. Today I'm going to be

flipping

this beautiful

hutch

. I have been dying to make a

hutch

since the moment I started

flipping

furniture and I finally got up the courage to make a hutch and found the perfect one because this is not a huge hutch, it is a huge project like most. The touches are: This one is nice and small and I think it could be perfect as someone's

coffee

bar or as a small storage cabinet even in an apartment.

It's going to be a super fun twist and I'm excited to get started. I found this piece. at goodwill and it was actually marked at 79.99 my mom was with me when we were looking at this at goodwill and of course she loves to bargain so she asked if there was any way we could get a little lower price and the guy Well, I said that if someone is over the blank age, I could give a discount of 20, so my mom was over that age, she is considered a senior in good will, don't tell her I told you that and we ended up getting this for $65.00, so it was a little more than I normally pay for a piece, but like I said, I'm dying to make a hutch and I think I can sell it for a pretty good profit.

We're going to turn this hutch upside down, so the first step will be to remove the hardware and then we can start cleaning. I'm not going to keep this hardware. I want to get him out of here before I do a good clean, so when I bought this hutch we knew there was a little problem with the door up here, so the problem is that it doesn't want to stay closed here, okay, so it closes down here, but this is just a bit of mucus while I thought it was going to be an easy solution we would have.

I just have to replace the magnet or straighten the hinges, we tried all that and then we found out that this door at the top is actually slightly warped and that's not an easy fix so the easiest thing we think of is actually to remove the doors totally, that wasn't in my original plan, but again, this warped door simply can't be fixed unless we do everything we can to vaporize it and that will cost a lot of money and of course I don't. I don't want to invest a lot of money in my piece, so we're just going to remove the doors.

I think it's still going to turn out really well and I think I can still pull it off, that being said. I'm going to remove the doors. The flat head screws are a little harder to get out, especially when they're old because there's not much for the screwdriver to grip, they slip quite often so they're in there tight, so I'm working hard to get them out through a door , I'm sad about that, but again, it's the best we can do at this point, the second door, the other thing about removing the doors is that I have to figure it out too.
I've found a way to remove them, which are the things that hold the door in place, so I don't know what they're called, but I'm going to try to get them out properly and then I'll have to put them on. a little bit of wood putty in those holes along with the holes where the hinges were because I don't want the hinge holes showing. I also need to figure out how to get them out to see if it can be as easy as the others. I know I always make you nervous with the way I do things, but I have to improvise now that I've started them a little.
I'm going to take them out with some pliers, here we go, this was a small piece to stop the door. There was one missing, but there's a nail back there, so I'm going to pull that out and then I'll pull this one out too. All hardware is off, except for these little ones here. I have no idea how I'm going to do it. take them out because they're metal and they're in there this one seems to be a little jiggly oh hey I got it out let's get it out maybe the pliers will get it out yeah that was a lot easier than I thought okay the hardware it is no longer there.
I'm going to go ahead and take out the shelves as well, I'll clean them separately, oh yeah, and when I bought it, this wasn't attached either, it was there, so it's good, it's just a little piece of wood that goes over here. to support the bottom shelf, so I'll just put it back. These are the only pieces of hardware I actually keep for re-shelving. They are somewhat unique. Now I can finally start cleaning properly, I'm coming. To clean with some dawn dish soap, today is a degreaser, so it will remove all the dirt, grease, grime and yuck, because this piece is pretty old, so I definitely want to clean it before I do anything else.
Now I'm going to change the water to put in some fresh water and rinse everything and then I'll be ready to fill all the holes with wood filler. I'm really thinking about leaving these wood shelves raw, um, I think. That with the look I'm going for will really tie it all together, so we'll see in the end, but the plan is to leave them raw, everything clean, let's fill these holes. I'm going to use wood. minwax filling. Basically I just take my putty knife and shove a little bit of wood filler into all the holes I want to fill and then scrape it flat, but I like to leave a little bit of excess on top that way. when I'm sanding we have enough filler in there to lay flat instead of still having an indent and then I also get the hinge holes again.
I don't want these excess hinge holes to be there because the doors don't go backwards. so we have to fill the holes and then at the top also this is going to be a little more challenging because we have to let it stay up there so we can't push it as well. a lot because it might fall out so you might have to get your hands a little dirty, stick it in the hole and hope it stays there. I could put tape there, but then I feel like it wouldn't dry. I've done this before to fill holes upside down.
I have never done it before. I have some advice. I'm just going to stick it in there, okay, that should look good and then my last step for the wood filler is I'm going to go around the whole piece and see if there's any major gaps missing or veneer or anything like that that needs to be filled in before I

paint

or sanding since I am going to replace the door hardware I also need to do some wood putty on both doors so it looks like there were originally three holes so I have to fill three holes instead of just the ones two regulars.
Also down here there is a little bit of sheet metal missing here and down here. on the leg, so I'm going to go ahead and fill that in again as well. I like to use my fingers and I also like to go a little overboard with the amount I use and that way I can sand it down later. to the perfect shape and then of course you'll never get the old pieces to look exactly like they did before they were used, so that adds to the character too. Obviously I want to get as much as I do.
It can be filled and fixed, but the fun part about flipping furniture is that in the end it's unique and every little crack and dent gives it more character, that's at least my opinion, so now we're basically going to wait and I'll come back tomorrow and putty it. for wood it will be dry and then we can sand it and start putting a little color on it. Okay, the wood filler is all dried and hardened, so I'm going to grab my sander. I put on the mask and start sanding. I'm not going to reach the bare wood.
I'm just sanding the entire piece and now I'm going to take my brush and clean up all the dust. I'm going to grab my microfiber cloth and that's going to be the final step to get all this dust out of here, so I'm done with the details and sanded where I missed with the sander, so now I'm going to get everything out. of the dust and I'm actually going to get out the blower and blow all the dust off just to make it a little quicker and then I'll come back with my microfiber cloth and pick up the remaining dust, hopefully it won't blow away. over the hutch, okay and that should be fine now, that's going to save me a lot of extra time because it's going to get all the dust off and I'm going to wipe it all down one last time with this microfiber cloth which is kind of a stickier cloth and attracts dust. , there shouldn't be too much left, but we don't want any left because the

paint

will stick to the dust instead of sticking to the surface, so we need to get rid of all the dust.
Now that I've cleaned up all the dust, I'm ready to prep the paint, so I'm going to put painter's tape on the areas where I don't want to get painted and have some on hand as well. Great new knee pads here so I don't destroy my knees. I know it seems silly, but that's the reasoning. I'm planning on leaving the bottom here wooden, so I don't want to paint on the inside of the doors at all. I'm just going to add a little bit of painter's tape around the edges to keep them from getting painted over, so we're going to use Dixie Bells in navy, so it's a nice deep navy color and I'm excited to put it on. there and see how it looks don't forget I have to use my bottle sir sir just softens the paint this is a pretty thick paint

chalk

paint usually is so when you use water with it to thin it out just a little a little bit helps it slide along the surface a lot easier and smooth it out so I sprayed my mister bottle on the surface where I'm going to paint and I sprayed a little bit of paint and I sprayed my brush just to have consistency on every surface and that will also help my paint smooth out much easier.
You might be wondering why I'm not using primer for this project and the reason is because I did sandpaper and generally you use a primer if it's not going to adhere to the surface itself or if you think color is going to show up and I don't think it's going to. the color of the wood appears because it is very dark and deep. The color will block it in on its own, so I'm trying to put on this first layer here. I feel the wind pick up. I think it's supposed to rain today and it's coming fast, so I have to put this first layer on first. hit, I'm not trying to miss any points, but I'm trying to put a little pep in my step.
I'm doing something I've never done before but I've seen other people do it and I'm actually painting the hinges the same color as the rest of the piece and we'll see if I like it. Yeah, like I said, I've never done it before, so I just have to see how it turns out. I always try to get to these little points. I have to stipple my brush and push all the paint in there, but I don't want it to drip, so I make sure to go over it again and catch any drips that might be happening.
Well, we beat the rain on the first layer. Take a step back and take a look. It looks pretty good and the reason I didn't put paint on the back is because I'm going to put wallpaper back in here. I have not decided yet. I have to pick it up. on my Instagram, if you don't follow me there, I often do polls, a lot of behind the scenes questions and a lot of different things, so make sure you follow me there on Furniture Flipping Teacher so you can join in. voting for things like this, so I'm going to let this first coat dry and then we'll come back for coat number two.
Okay, time for the second coat. I still see some of the color from the original piece showing through, so I want to cover all of that and hopefully two coats will be enough to do that. Okay, layer number two is done. We'll be fine with two coats, so we'll let this dry and then we'll get the top. Put a layer on it to protect it and then comes the wallpaper. I'm really excited because although the wind has been picking up a bit, the rain hasn't come yet, so I'm hoping it holds out at least until I'm done with this hutch or else we'll have to move right inside the garage, like you can see the rain has come it's drizzling right now and it's not too windy so we put up a canopy so we can still use the daylight and I'm going to put on the top coat so I'm using the Dixie Bell clear coat flat because I don't want this to be shiny or even semi-glossy, I want it to be a nice matte. finish I'm using a foam brush to apply the top coat.
I just find that I have more control and it comes with a smoother finish. I generally go in one direction so the finish lines look nice and all flow together. These foam brushes are literally 50 cents. so you can buy them in a bulk package or you can buy them one at a time, they'll probably last you about two to three projects before they start to deteriorate, so 50 cents for three projects I would call it a good buy, okay. The top coat is now done, it has to dry for a while and there were a couple of spots where when I put the top coat on some of the blue paint came off so I'm going to go back and touch them up as well but for now I'm going to put a little bit of wood wax on the wood to bring it back to life both inside and on the shelves that I store raw wood, so as I had shown you before, there was a small shelf. that had fallen off so I'm just going to replace it or I'm not going to replace it but I'm going to reinstall it so one of the nails is already there and I grabbed another small nail and I'm just going to hammer it in to do it. coincides with this other side and in reality there is already avery nice line here for me, so all I have to do is put it in there, I'm going to use some Dixie Bell Big Mom Butter and it's orange scented, so it smells really good and I'm going to use a brush of wax and I'll just rub it on this. raw wood and will simply revitalize it, bring it back to life and at the same time make it smell good.
I've never used this on my channel before, but it really revitalizes the wood. Actually, it's like magic. It's a cool result once you see the finished product, so we've got all the big mama butter there. I'm going to do a quick layer on top of this and then I think I'm going to put it on there and then I'm going to put it on because that The way that I give it a good base and make sure everything is stable, you can see the difference in how crazy it is. just bring it back to life, doesn't it look much better?
Just some big mama butter and a little effort. get it into the grain of the wood and it just makes it pop, it gives it shine, it dries down and then it also smells like oranges so let's get the wallpaper right, it's wallpaper time and like I said before I put up a poll. on Instagram and it's been head to head for the three hours that this poll has been up so I'm going to show you the results that I'm seeing right now and blue this one has 121 votes and gold this one has gold. It's got 128 votes guys, it's literally been almost tied the entire race, we were fighting for gold.
I think this will be really cool because it will really explode with the hardware. I'm going to put gold hardware on the doors down here. so just putting it all together, I'm excited to see what this looks like on the back of the hutch. Now my steps are measuring and cutting and then I'll start gluing it. Looks like I'll be able to make one. row and then I'll have to cut the second row, but hopefully we can line up the design so it looks perfect. I also have a couple of wallpaper tools to help me with this because I knew what I was going to be doing and I knew it would be a good seven dollar investment.
Also, I've never made real walls, quote unquote, walls with this. I just made drawers, so it's a different feeling because I feel like it has to be a little more perfect, okay, so I think I have it all lined up as far as where I need to cut here on this seam and where it's lined up at the bottom, aligned on the sides, I made a small fold. Okay, I'm going to fold this part back and then I'm going to glue it. I think I'm going to start from the top and then glue it in and make sure it lines up on the side as well.
And then from there, well, the tape they rolled the wallpaper with is sticky and leaves that nasty residue and it's getting dirty and that doesn't make me very happy, but you live and learn, so I'm going to cut a new one . piece, I think I'm going to use this one to cut the exact same size and then we'll go from there, okay, and now I'm going to use my smoother wallpaper router and smooth it out as I go, I don't. I want bubbles so I want to get them out as we lift them up again if we need it to be as smooth as possible okay no bubbles there's just a little bit of excess down here that we're going to go ahead and cut off right away.
A little harder than I thought it would be, but we're getting there. I cut the last piece and hope it fits where I had it. You may have to cut a little bit, which will be Okay, I did a little bit more just in case, but we'll leave it and see what happens now that we're done with the wallpaper which frustrated me a little bit. I've never actually done it on a wall. I've made it in drawers before, so it was a first for me. I'm definitely going to watch more videos on how to install the wallpaper, but I think it will look pretty good and now that I have it flipped, By the way, whenever you paint or touch up a piece of furniture, you should always make sure to clean the underside at least on sometime before we sell it because as you can see it's very dirty so we're going to spray it and it cleans all that up, you can choose to do it at the beginning like when you're cleaning the rest.
I decided to wait until I was doing it, when I knew it was going to flip because this is a larger piece. but we just want to remove all those cobwebs and dust from that background right there and then turning it over not only does it reveal dust and dirt on the background, but it also reveals some spots that need to be touched up with paint so you can see I just didn't understand the bottom of this drawer and like I said before I was going to go through and get some of the places I had missed previously so that's what I'm going to do next so I have them all.
The touch-ups are done and my last step before we can set it up is to attach the hardware, so I'm going to drill some new holes and then we're going to attach those gold hardware pieces. I measured how tall the doors are and I decided I wanted the hardware to be right in the middle so we put the level right in the middle and we're going to drill two holes right where this level is and I think I'm going to set it. and then I'm going to screw in the hardware and let's see what this baby looks like, so the holes are set.
I'm going to install the hardware. I haven't shown them yet, but I'm choosing these gold tees for the hardware, now is the moment of truth. We keep the shelves raw or paint them and two are already there. I personally like wooden shelves, so I'll leave it that way, I think. I'm going to go ahead and stage it and probably stage it as a

coffee

bar pantry. I think it would look really cute in someone's kitchen to just store things or even as a small decorative sideboard to store things downstairs. I just think that the raw wood down here unites the wood up there too.
My opinion, if it doesn't sell, I can always repaint the shelves. I posted this on Facebook Marketplace yesterday. I have it listed right now for $375, so we'll do it. Let's see if it goes like this or if I'll have to download it here in a couple of days, let's do a quick summary of this hutch and the expenses I spent on it, so originally it was 65 dollars that I paid for the wallpaper. It costs about nine dollars, but I only use about half of it, so let's say five dollars and then all the materials together cost me about fifteen dollars, so it's a total of eighty-five dollars that I'm involved in this, so no too much.
Bad for being a slightly more expensive piece and for bringing some leftover materials than what I normally use. I try to limit myself from spending too much money on outside expenses and materials, but for this one I knew I wanted to throw away. all together and those pieces of hardware were a little outdated so it definitely needed a quick upgrade. The wallpaper took a little longer than anticipated, so I posted it a little later than I really wanted to. I was hoping I could do it. I'm selling it now, but let's talk a little more about how the hutch turned out and how pleased I am with the results, so the wallpaper on the back was probably the most difficult thing with this piece.
I thought it was going to be similar to placing. in the drawers or just applying it to a flat surface, but since these walls are right here in the way and it's quite tall and up and down, it was a little difficult for me to be able to reach the corners and be able to flatten it well to keep the sides uniforms and stuff, and especially since I had to cut half of it if I had just had the part where it was a full sheet and then another full sheet, I think it would have been a lot. easier because the part that was the most difficult for me and that I will be researching to do a little better is cutting the side up here and also cutting the top and bottom to fit in this space.
Overall, I really think the gilding turned out amazing. I'm so excited that it was chosen instead of blue. I think the gold up here makes the hardware below stand out, so I love this look overall, there's a lot to it. Different vibes here are the raw wood and the mid-century gold, but the neutral, the navy and all these different styles come together to create one look and I'm excited for the person who will find it and love it. and I want to buy it remember to follow me on Instagram to see when this baby sells and also to see a lot behind the scenes if you like what you saw here today and want to join my journey to pay off my student loan debt and flip furniture be sure to Subscribe below and I'll see you on Thursday for another video.
