Fixing my BROKEN Porsche!

Apr 06, 2024
There are some problems with my old Porsche km the thermostat doesn't seem to work because the engine never gets up to temperature there is a leak somewhere in the coolant system the brake booster tubes have

broken

and have a repair on them the tires are old and falling apart every time Every time I start this car I get columns of horrible smoke that seems to be burning oil the rear window opening doesn't work the gearbox sometimes makes noise when changing gears there are some fault codes on the car, but worst of all Suddenly water started dripping from the roof, as a result, I have to put half a cover over this car every night.

It's a very good classic additions cover that does the job of keeping the rain out, but otherwise I'd rather fix that problem. This car is going to start smelling like an old shed. Now I'm off to Porsche to read so they can not only maintain this car, but also fix as many of those issues as possible. I'm a little worried about how much this is going to affect me. cost I would like to introduce everyone to John John is the guy who will make my classic knen like new. Did you guys work on these when they were new?

More Interesting Facts About,

fixing my broken porsche...

Yes, I don't see them as often, but they still remember things and work. In classic Porsches like the 356 through to the latest GT3 RS, there was quite a wide range and this car is now classed as a classic. Its classic scheme and in fact I thought that they are a bit strange cars of this generation. the classic scheme, but I've noticed quite a few 996 sixes here, but I guess like you say, you make 356 G be 911 and all that kind of stuff. I bought the car from you yesterday, you did a little prep work. What have you done so far?

We changed the ATF oil, as well as the automatic transmission fluid. Now I had a problem with that. Occasionally the car was maybe in 4th G, just what could be causing that, so it could depend on the quality of the oil. in previous use the oil can degrade from that point of view naturally obviously there are external influences if you have the right tires and also any differences in tire tread depth or anything. They have the right tires. Those are the wrong wheels for the car. They're not, they're from an E2, so you did an oil change too.

Note that the oil condition probably could have done with a change, although it's interesting because I actually had the car serviced recently and they put new oil in it. but I believe the service before that date had not been performed for some years. Would there still be traces of old oil in the engine or something like that exactly? Yeah, so the engine is dirty inside, um, carbon deposits, that kind of thing that oil will do. wash it off the metal parts and then put it back in the oil, so if you get an old car and it hasn't had a change in a long time, it might be worth doing one or changing it and then shortly after another or changing another.
What happens is that you looked at the car fan like it was going to work for a moment and then it just kept running. You removed the old fan and now put in a new fan. You've obviously prepared him for the more serious jobs ahead. up in a bit Yeah, so the tank head obviously LS had identified as having a leak, we have a working thermostat now, these cars have no problems with their coolant lines, can you see any problems? So E1 knew they had plastic. coolant tubes that go down the V and when we went to E12 they changed CH that design there are some plastic tubes in there but not as many as there used to be with the E1 the only plastic piece there is is a plug between the thermostat the housing and the water pump and we're going to replace that anyway, okay, perfect.
I thought I'd help you today. John, maybe keep the labor rate down if I act as your assistant, I'll be helping out of pocket anyway, so I'll be helping you with some of the solutions, we'll see if I'm actually a help or a hindrance. Now I know that my old permit may have some problems, such as leaking, however, I know that it has not been stolen. It has not been written off, has no mileage returned and has no outstanding financing and I know all this because I was sensible enough to check its record on the car vertical before I bought it and the car vertical report.
I came back all clean which is good news, however that is not always the case with all used vehicles. Not all cars have a clean past. Here's a different car vertical report on another Porsche Ken, it's a new one, a 2016 diesel and while it's being reviewed. In terms of theft financing and mileage, there is a side against it for damage and as I scroll down I can see pictures of the damage to the car. It appears to have been in the head-on collision and is obviously serious enough to have triggered the airbags, which is not good, so if I was looking to buy this car I would have checked its record through the car upright, I saw these photos and I thought no, I'm not going to buy it, so if you're thinking about buying a used car brand.
Make sure you don't buy one with a Dodge, go to Car Vertical and use the code Watson for 20% off. In fact, I put a link to Car Vertical in the description of this video and my ping comment to take you directly there. or you can use the pop up banner that should appear on the top right corner of the screen to go directly there or the QR code just scan it with your phone and you will go directly to the car vertical and use the Watson code to get 20%. In fact, if you bought a car but never checked its past, you should do a vertical car report now just to make sure you're not driving in something that has been damaged and could be unsafe H and don't forget to use the Watson code to get 20% off anyway, let's get on with the video, so John, obviously I had this problem with the leaky roof.
I came to this one morning and there is a water leak, such as the sunglasses holder, the passenger foot was filled well, the car was slightly worn. well, it was leaning towards the passenger side, which could have caused what tends to happen is the flat panels get filled with sheets of debris and things like that where the plum panels are, so this section over here looks clean , brilliant. I've given it a clean, now the drain block fills up past the servo, this and then overrides the drain, so the drain backs up to the roof and then spills into the roof console and that sort of thing was there . a lot in um quite a bit we've taken it's in the Hoover, so quite a bit and it looks like wait a minute, we've seen, wait, so this was it, yeah, look at this, look at this, this is like this, this is it.
There was a lot, yes, there was a large area on both sides, yes, on both sides, all of that, but we found out that it looks like it may have had a mouse on it at some point, so this is a sticker from the wiring loom behind that. area oh look, yeah look, it's the original K sticker on Turbo and a mouse ate it. It seems so, you haven't found a mouse, have you? We haven't found it at this time, but I'm still keeping an eye out. We think that will solve the leaky roof problem, yes, and I would say this evidence is quite damning, it seems like it's never been done, hasn't it for a while?
No, John, I think we need to talk about this particular part now that it's been taped over. times, yes, and here I think it was me, this was actually the cause of my braking problem, essentially it is a vacuum line that takes vacuum from the pump at the rear of the engine to the brake booster, causing it to The brakes feel much lighter, as Lewis says. the press office fixed it with his tape and did the job. Yes, it would last a while, but it is a temporary fix. While we're here, we can put a new pipe in there, let's see we remove everything and this is the new one. part of the new pipe, the first half goes in now, yes, and we will put the other part in later, but how dangerous it was, with the gaps in the hose, it increases the braking effort required from the driver.
I realized it was like a For a race car, it's always good to have the brakes working properly while John puts things back on the scheduler ready to fit the new expansion tank. I thought I'd show you the old one. You can see the seam has really corroded and it's been leaking coolant here because it's a two piece design and eventually every time this seal wears out and fails now this is why when I got the car delivered For the first time it was like I had a coolant leak after a long trip. It was a major concern when it first appeared.
I thought, Oh my God, what did I buy? But it's no big deal and we're going to fix it right now, John. I could see you're having a little battle. take out the old thermostat, would you replace this plastic part anyway? Yes, do you want to know something? I was actually considering doing the thermostat replacement after seeing someone do it on YouTube, but after seeing you, an expert, how many 30 years of struggle should we have? Say there's no way, it's just access and, for example, bits of plastic and pretty sharp things down there too, so feel free to open up and do it, you cut your knuckles, didn't you?
This is the old water pump, you say it has been replaced. Since that plug has been replaced in history, we can see that it had a leak and there is some Deb in the middle of the old coolant in V, so this plug had a leak in the past because the gasket is not available separately once you remove it. put a new one in yeah because you don't want to do all this work and then the water pump fails but this was the problem here it's the thermostat that moves back and forth and opens and closes a valve to allow the coolant to cool down. through, but what controls it is this device here that almost looks like a cigarette lighter and what happened is it got caught in the open position, seed in the open position when the car got really hot and it stayed open since it was running colder than it should have been for normal driving, it was probably feeding a little fuel, which means now this is fixed, it should potentially have more power.
Yes, I imagine you are right and all of that is very interesting and very key to making this car work as well as possible. as possible, but there is still more to do. John's been doing all the work so far, but I want to try a little bit on what I'd like to work on because this is something I was definitely going to do myself: the Glass release here at On the back, the switch doesn't work, so, can you let me do it? I can show you what to do to let go. Obviously, since the switch doesn't work, we can't open the glass until we've opened the back. lid and there is a manual release okay so yeah a little edge to remove there is a little latch just push it in and it should come loose so I know where the emergency release is so now that I have it open , you can get access to the rear wiper link, but we don't need to touch this and we don't need to touch that because there are no problems with that.
I just have to get to this part here, yeah, so what causes these switches to fail is just water. Water actually gets into the plastic, so that's the switch wiring there. Char, I just need to undo it, let's test the switch, obviously, it's not necessarily the switch, it could be the motor, but in general, although the motor is inside. in that section, so we definitely don't want it to be like that, so we can plug it in, okay, just as a test, okay, that's it and then we block it, please work on it. I push it yeah yeah yeah easy John so now I need to take the wiper arm off you get a new one of these which is good because it breaks pretty regularly here we go that's the one someone GL already been there before, this is not the first time on the road for the problems we have had since This white P point is made of plastic and invariably corrodes so we think it will potentially break, we have a spare just in case so we will be good.
Well, I'm going to do this, John, so it's all me. right-handed left-handed Lucy oh, so it's come undone, the telling part is if that actually comes out of the groove and what you don't want to do is leave it on the glass, not exactly because that's when you break the window and all kinds of truck. no that's SE so basically what we would use we have an extractor that we can use so this is one of the things you know this is a problem so you have all these specialized tools I mean are you grimacing right?
It is not like this? Yeah, and like I say, it usually won't come off, it'll just go away with a pop if it's going to come off and you just broke your arm, which is a good thing because that's what usually happens based on your shape. for the Ken, yeah, so we're going to have to cut it off, okay, so John is just going to lift the rear glass. I don't want to do it because, if youYou're wrong, the entire glass panel just cracks. I hope you made it. The correct setting for everything was there, you were a little nervous, it feels like it was too much, but basically the switch should be level in the center position, that's not center, no, let's try it, but it doesn't have it? buttonhole on it, it has a guide, but keeping it center is fine, so I'll hold it, it's not quite level again.
I didn't hold it long enough maybe we'll hold it a little further, good job, an hourly rate, right? Do it the third time hopefully yes that's level, if it's not we'll make it look level in post, there's a bit of play but that's because it is what it is so look lower instead of higher. go to the level, okay, so that's where it's going to end up, it's going to have the weight of it there, so hit it, so John, did you do it right? Got it, level up, level up, John, I was right, mate one, too high first. time today I got it right victory finally that's it, I thinkThat will be it, I think you're right, yes, let's finally adjust it, that took about an hour and that was with your help to know what to do, you know what I don't think I want do more, John.
I'm going to leave you to get on with other things, okie dokie. When Lewis originally checked my car at the press office he noticed some oil which he claimed was coming from the booster pipes and I also had the symptom that when I start the car for the first few seconds a lot of smoke comes out of the car. the rear end, but it doesn't continue to smoke, it's like a lot of smoke could be caused by these booster tubes, yes, so the external leak is exactly that. it comes out of the seal and also the end of the Jubilee clip, once the oil goes in the pipe stays inside and then it builds up, then the intercooler will start to fill with oil and then it settles in the intake and then you turn it all off. it runs to the lowest points which are the intake valves and then the next time you start it up that's when you get the cloud of smoke let's say periodically we would remove them and empty them anyway but obviously they get through the best they can .
I'd say They're probably the original ones if I tilt it so we can see it dripping out there, yeah, and if you look down, all this oil came out of these impulse tubes, yeah, so I'd say yeah, over all that, wow, TRUE? So you think. that after changing the pipes and we have removed the oil and you should no longer have that smoke at startup, we hope not, no, I hope not, because that could be something more serious, obviously, the turbo could have a problem. symptoms we have in front of us this is how we would see it we would most likely hope it is ok John, you did it, you completed all the tasks, it was great to see a professional in action, did it take your time?
I went back to work on this old car, yeah it's like seeing an old friend and catching up. I'm really sorry for hindering you with some of the tasks, especially by doing this. I think I got in the way, but it was satisfying to be a part of the car repair. and I'm very glad it works now. I'm looking forward to driving it to see if you know we fixed some of those things we're not sure about like the smoke in Star. Thank you so much for doing the car it's been a real pleasure with you while I was in your way anyway Do you know what I have to do now?
I have to go get the invoice oh oh I'll leave you with that yes, okay and like that I already picked up the car. I'll tell you how much it came in a moment. First things first, although I'm going to put this in sport mode because it really changes the way it drives. Actually, I haven't been. I was able to push this car because I've been too worried about those old junk tires, but now with these Michelins on I can have some fun. I'll tell you what I can't believe, how big and heavy this car is and at the same time how well it runs. cornering, I mean, Porsche absolutely nailed the dynamics of this car.
Wow, it handles so well. What I'm actually going to do is keep it in Sport mode so it's aggressive for the gearbox and engine, but the air suspension is in Comfort mode. and now it just slides, I mean in the past it must have blown all the other SUVs out of the water, check this out, the steering is slower than modern cns, but the balance of the chassis is absolutely successful, one that It's a lot of fun and the performance of this engine, oh my gosh, you know what the previous 955 was, the previous version, the pre-facelift with the 4.5, when I drove them they just don't feel as quick as this one.
This B sport has a lot to do with just changing the character of the car, it just makes everything more aggressive, the response of the engine is so instantaneous, the gearbox is also more responsive and they didn't have that button on the 955, the car from the previous generation, and it's great. I see that the thermostat is working, the engine is up to temperature, obviously I wouldn't have hit it if it weren't, but let's get back to sports, the character changes instantly and the noise, and now I have confidence in the brakes because I have it repaired properly instead of a bodge jar with some duct tape and the way it handles bumps with the air suspension is amazing.
I'm going to put it back into Comfort mode and relax a little because I really want to try it. this gearbox will shift into fourth gear now smoothly as you want, it's funny, isn't that how sometimes just a service can make a car feel so much better? Another thing to try, oh yeah, the fuzzy fan, it works, this thing almost drives like new. car now I haven't been able to test if it's still leaking, hopefully not after they took all that stuff out of the car, which is probably blocking the drains, tested it, pressure tested it, left it outside and no water leaked in, so We should be good at it because a car leak is terrible, but I have to say I'm very happy so far.
I think we should probably stop and find out how much this Mark One Porsche Kan cost me. I'm now old enough to qualify for Porsche classic registration, which means discounted labor and parts rates. Now keep this in mind when I give you the cost of all the parts I did to the car's engine oil and filter change. Gearbox oil £46. and filter change £450 power steering fluid and tank change I didn't know I needed to do it although to be fair the student shook a little when stopped when turning hard they don't do that anymore that was £428 coolant and flush tank replacement £275 water pump and thermostat £690 brake booster vacuum line £28 booster hoses £31 fan replacement £319 brake fluid and caliper bleeder screws £32 crank and switch rear wiper £571 engine oil cap £8 and windscreen washer cap also £8 that means total spent £3,967 uh now when you add that to the price I paid for the car £7,500 I'm all for this one vehicle £1,500 I suppose I could have bought one in excellent condition with similar mileage and it probably cost that much and to be fair you know I would have ended up finding some faults in that supposedly brilliant car so who knows who knows right now you might be thinking, wait a minute, Matt, if you had gone to an independent dealership. the parts and labor would have cost you less no not the parts but the labor yes but you know some people want to go to their main dealer to get the seal from the main dealer and maybe the dealer main thing to have them check out their new Porsche and they just want to make the older one stun them too.
I mean, there were a lot of old classic Porsches in the shop when I was there, so anyway, you pay your money, now make your decision, considering I've paid all that money for this car, I think I need to test the performance according to Porsche, This 2007 Knen 4.8 shouldn't get to 60 in 5.1 seconds so I'm going to see how fast it really is and that will give me an indication of how many horses it has lost over the years. Does it still have the full 500 horsepower? Well, I'm on it. I can also time a quarter mile, so putting it in sport mode, I'll lower the suspension a little bit and feel it go down and then I'm just going to brake, boost it and time it with my specialized timing gear which went very well, Come on, it's not 60 4.85, that's good, the standing quarter mile, although come on, this is very fast for an old car, 13.2 seconds, that's not bad.
I know not at 60 though 4.85 for an old car like this. I don't think I lost any horsepower. I do not really like. I'm happy. What I'm going to do now is a brake test from 60 MPH, look how cool. The brakes are all over this car, here we go, anchors, now. I want you to have it done at about 35M 108 feet, that's 33M, that's really, really good. I'm surprised.
