FIXED BLADE BROADHEAD TEST

Apr 10, 2024
Welcome everyone to today's video, another exciting unboxing from Lancaster Archery and we continue the Broadhead Saga. In today's video we've been talking a lot about

broadhead

s lately and what we have in this box is to continue

test

ing the Saga overseas. going over

broadhead

s, the broadhead debate, probably the most controversial topic in archery, one of the top three for sure, so let me get them all out and then we'll talk about them, so what we have here They are some of the most popular broadheads that Lancaster Archery sells and what I want to do is the same thing we did with the expandable Broadhead

test

that we are going to do on a

fixed

blade

Broadhead test.

Now I know there are a lot of these, so there are so many there are probably like 20 relevant broadheads. I know 20 relevant stills, 20 relevant expandables that people like to shoot, that are on the market and that are popular, so of course we could do them all, but that's it. I just wanted to make five like the best five that Lancaster Archery has made. selling, I mean, honestly, they may not be in the top five, but they're way up, they're very popular and I've shot all of them except this one, um, but I will. today and then that will be our first attempt so starting from left to right we have the head qad Exodus uh, quite popular, made by our friend ends at qad, who also makes the breaks a very interesting combination as a company, they make breaks for archery and then the broadheads jump over each other and then definitely my favorite shot my elk last year.

More Interesting Facts About,

fixed blade broadhead test...

I shot quite a few animals with this one, the montec G5. I feel like this is such a basic broadhead that has been around for so long. just your good old standard three

blade

, you can't go wrong with this at all so we'll give it a try and then this is the Magnus Black Hornet Sir razor. It's like a two blade with some serration with some little bleeder blades so this is uh I've actually used their hunting tips for turkey the turkey head grinders um but I never liked the tips real hunting ones, okay, and then these are Grim Reaper Pro Series micro Hades Pro.
fixed blade broadhead test
I think I've used their regular Hades Pro if that's something these are pretty small. I didn't know they had a mic but I shot a moose with these before they worked great, they fly well and what I remember is that they are pretty sharp and plus this is definitely a fan favorite too, a Slick Trick. these have been around forever I know a lot of guys who have used them I think I've shot like a deer with them before one or two D or four this is cricket month we have crickets in the store we need to exterminate them Okay, here are the tips of hunting that we are going to test in our test group today. um and let's go ahead and start opening them up, open them up starting with the QED.

Okay, so you get three of these, so this is The qad Exodus Broadhead. It seems quite robust. I need to grab an arrow to show you that this is something unique they have, but when you screw it onto the arrow, it actually slides on the shaft of the blades, so it's a super small profile in comparison. so you like, you know, the broadheads usually sit, they would sit right there, so they actually pass. I don't know what this does, if this does anything, it's kind of a unique look, um, but yeah, so far it's so good, we're going to do our famous sharpness test, uh, cutting a piece of paper, so this doesn't It's scientific, but at least it gives a good image.
I would consider it to be pretty sharp, it's jamming a little bit, but definitely, if you catch it right, you can definitely cut well. but it's definitely hanging there we go, but you can see there's a lot of frayed stuff there, which means it's just not like a razor, but I don't know, I still consider it sharp. It would be totally fine. take out a box and shoot it, okay, next is the montec G5 of all these. I feel like this is one of the OGs. They have existed forever. I have met a lot of people who have shot these and I have had a lot of success, like I said I shot my elk with it last year.
I had a pace of 100. It was amazing. Actually, he's on the wall right here. It worked perfect. Let me see, it wobbles a little bit, but honestly. I feel like that's the insert compared to the Broadhead because these inserts bend a little bit, but they're really good. I know a lot of people who have used them, so let's get these out, probably one of the simplest broadheads in this line, it's solid construction so there are no parts, as you can see, this qad, there's like a couple of parts they all have multiple parts where the montec is just one solid piece so in my opinion the simpler the better for some things so give this some clarity. try it's not very sharp here okay that was a little better not very sharp it starts running and then stops I think maybe partly because this is the three blade setup but it's not great but by touch I mean I can cut my I.
I can cut my nail like this, so I don't know. I took them out of the box. I've shot them a lot and one nice thing about these is that you put them on the table if you have a rock or something. What I'm going to do is I'm just going to rub it on the stone, it's at a perfect angle where when you put it on the table it's the right sharpening angle, so it's super nice that you can do it really quick and easy, but like me. I said I took them out of the package and shot them with no problems, okay, next we have the Magnus.
One thing I noticed when opening all of these broadheads is that no one has amazing packaging yet for their broadheads, very interesting. Look at this Broadhead definitely the most unique looking Broadhead we've opened so far, a little bit of bleed or a little bit of striation right there, then we have little bleed blades that have cuts on both sides and you have cuts on the back of these two, so that's a good thing, if you do it, if you don't get a full step and it peeks out and then when the deer runs or the animal runs, it's like doing a chopping motion which is actually a nice thing to have . that reverse cut there, so let's do our southern sharpening test a little bit here.
I don't even know what this saw like you can't do, you can't check the serration, so I might have to make the blade backwards, which doesn't cut a bit either, let's try the little bleeder blades, which it's very awkward to do, yeah, that's not happening, okay, it's very hard to check the sharpness of this because of the serrations right there, but it feels sharp. You know, it feels sharp, the real tests will be the penetration, I guess to see how sharp some of these are, but okay, Grim Reaper Hades, this is it. I've heard a lot of people use them too.
I know, like I said, I shot a moose with it. it went pretty well but i had the bigger ones these are pretty small we have a 1 and 1 16 inch cut a 1 and 1 16 inch cut and then it says 1.6 inch total cut whatever whatever that means, maybe they mean total circumference, but look at that little one it's a tiny Broadhead, honestly pretty small, let's compare it to the Exodus which is a little bigger for cutting diameter, then we have the slightly bigger montec and then we have the Magnus, which is much larger, um, but the Hades, I think this is yeah, there are three individual blades that you can slide in and out, we have the wild, very sharp front tip there that Grim Reaper has been known, they have also been known for their super sharp blades in a factory, so let's go.
Go ahead and try this in the sharpness test. I feel like this will probably work pretty well based on what I know. This one is so small. Come on, it's cutting, but I honestly feel like the expandables we tested performed better at cutting than all of them. of these

fixed

blades are like the cutting of this one, but it's not just sliding, it takes a little time to get started. I don't know, it's not a big test we're doing, but it shows the very interesting initial head cut of the Grim Reaper micro Hades. the Slick trick, how the hell do we open this packaging?
You might need a knife to make the worst packaging of all of these so far, it's by far Slick's trick, this is terrible, you're telling me this is just how I am. Are we supposed to open this up by taking a knife and cutting it or am I doing this totally wrong, I don't think it's right, we have the ferrule on the outside, okay, here we go, so like I said, this comes disassembled and we have blades here I think I even have some extra blades. No, we don't have extra blades because they ship four of these broadheads in a package, which is actually pretty good because you get four of them instead of three, so to assemble this, you place all of these very carefully. like crossing them oh I know why, because there are two different types of leaves, this is the other part, let me try not to cut myself while I open it, okay, so this is the other leaf, you can see the comparison of these two . blades there is a much more engraved front part that crosses.
I think the other one is what's happening here, so let's try that again, come on, now that everything is nice and nice, we'll take our washing machine and drop it in. In there and there we go, that's a complete clever trick, right there, four blades feel pretty sharp, but I've never liked having to do what I just did, play with the blades or you take them off and then they all fall apart, but it's nice to be able to change the blades and keep the same wild. You can buy a bunch of replacement blades to get that part right.
Well, let's see what we have. Oh, that was pretty good. Maybe I spoke too soon. Not bad. One of the thinnest blades. I think the thinness of the blades helps in this quote unquote test, not bad, probably one of the best performing ones out of the q80 and this one is probably the sharpest, if that was a good word to say, so okay guys What are we? What we're going to do now is this is the fun part, we're going to shoot this bad boy through some gel, but some first initial thoughts on all of these bad boys.
I'm going to line them up and they are all quite comparable in size inside. Which is why the Hades micro is probably the smallest, but all of their quality looks very good and they are all relatively sharp. The Montec could probably be the least sharp, but I picked them up. I photographed them and still think they are sharp. enough to kill right out of the box, probably the sharpness is this tricky little sneaky guy here, but other than that, all the quality looks good, everything looks good and we're going to install the ballistic gel to shoot through from it and see what we get for some. penetration of these five broadheads, okay guys, the next step in this test will be ballistics, y'all, yes, I'm wearing a different shirt, yes, it's a different day, yes, my hair is probably shorter because I got a cut the hair, it's a pair. days after filming the rest of this video and we forgot to bring the extra camera, so either we brought that extra camera, it just didn't work, it malfunctioned for some reason, we got to the beginning of the clip and then we didn't. the rest so the slow motion is definitely the coolest part so we have all our arrows again let's just shoot them and see what we have and I know what you guys did the first time but you guys don't so I'm kinda interested if they are going to do the same and I guess we can show them the other gel.
We literally had to get a completely different gel and all just for this segment. Do you remember what order we filmed them in? ah, never mind, we'll do this one first, this is the micro Hades from Grim Reaper Hades and I'll do them in the same kind of grid pattern that we've been doing, I gotta get into a nice stance. Well, wow, I feel like that went a lot deeper than before. We had a piece of cardboard last time, right? I think we did it without cardboard. Hopefully I don't regret that because they're going a little deeper.
It'll be fine, it'll be the same control, all good, next we have the montec G5 which, as I've talked about, I shot my moose with this one. I shot a lot of things with this Broadhead. He's a tried and true Broadhead good man, he pretty much runs the entire block, so he slightly outperforms Grim Reaper, who did the same thing in the last test. He's fine too, next we have the Exodus qad, which is one. Of the larger ones, both the G5 and Grim Reaper have a fairly small form factor, this one is a bit larger.
I don't know, I forget what the actual cut is, but just visually I mean the blade stays out of the wave. It stands out much more abroad. very good, it's very close to the tide with the G5, so they're all good there, they're all close, okay, next we'll do the Slick Trick, these are the only four blades in this test, so, in theory, We should have more stamina on this and stuff, but we'll see what makes this test a little fun, oh wow, yeah, so we have a lot less than the rest. I feel like the three above who are in a small, tight group andthen this. one is on its own, that's fine and then we have the Magnus Stinger Broadhead which looks weird with the big bleeder blades which I like, it has reverse cutting on both sides so I like it but that's not going to matter at all for this. try it, but it's our largest Broadhead, which will probably increase drag and friction, so let's see what it does.
We almost missed, but we're good and that's very surprising, so it actually cut more than the Slick Trick. our Slick Trick is our loser, let's go ahead and do this to have the winning spot, man, it's really hard to say, but I'm going to say it's a tie between the QED Exodus and the montec G5, so we have, man. I feel like the Hades Pro is a little further away than the Magnus and then we have Slick Trick. I guess we could do the opposite that way, but that's the same result, but let me take the other gel that we shot the first time we shot through a lot of gel for you guys, so let's leave this now okay, so this is it our gel and all our hunting tips.
It's a little crazy seeing the only difference between these two and this one is that I didn't put in a piece of cardboard. On the front, I guess I should have done it just to have control, but it's okay, don't worry, we have very similar results, we have Montec and The Exodus in the lead and both, so we did the test twice and then we have Hades and the stinger and very close here and very close here and then Slick's tricks last in both so we accidentally did the test twice but it's cool to show the control of everything and also what it's really like It's interesting see how far these expandables are from these fixed blades, so we still have the dead meat on the head because, you know, there are less blades and super sharp blades and everything we did that test there, but it's even more back that all these fixed blades is very close to the Slick Trick but still a little bit back um, so cool test, you know we have, I mean, it's fun to look at this and see this, I kind of want to just put it on the shelf and look at it, but that's the test, the winner, let's say, let's see, this is G5 Arrow and then the one in the middle is The Exodus, so in this case I think Exodus barely won. but in our previous test, the G5 just buried Bailey won, so let's consider there is a tie between the G5 and The Exodus for penetration in the next test, okay, I'm going to shoot a field tip real quick just for uh alone. to check one last time my point of impact one minute that little orange dot up there just a touch okay it should be cash now I'm not moving my site at all but I think we're just going to shoot this all at once and then we'll see what our group is, so we start with The qad Exodus, so these arrows I have the X b-roll veins on them, the four Fletch, which are actually very nice and forgiving. for fixed blades like these when, uh, when I set up a bow to shoot fixed blades, this is typically the setup that I'm running and then I'll run to do all my distances and I should be able to hit my range tip, so this is the same configuration that we are filming and we will see if we can get it more or less right in all of these.
I mean, there shouldn't be any reason not to do it and if there is, it's kind of weird. It's kind of weird and sometimes broadheads do weird things that are inexplicable for the most part, but let's see what we have here, okay, that was a good shot. I feel like that went pretty far, okay? Okay, so next we did the montec um. I know this one shoots when you mark it, it shoots very, very well. I liked it last year when I learned I had to shoot fixed blades to hunt elk. I was able to go 20 yards to 100.
I was hitting my field point so I know this bad boy shoots well when it's all marked in the same spot just a little bit lower, that's good, we're grouping, that's all we are searching, is grouping, what do we do next? the Magnus now I feel like this one could do something a little weird who knows it's just that it's a lot it's quite advanced, you can see that it's quite what I like to do I'll also notice it when I photograph These fixed blades, if they are two or three blades, I try to run them as horizontally as possible or as my fletching allows and if I have three blades, what I like to do is run them like this so that the two blades are even. a little more horizontal, I don't think it really matters much, but it's more about consistency: you line them up the same for each arrow and just make sure it flies the same out of the bow, okay, we'll give that a try. this.
I actually didn't fly that hard, it seemed pretty loud in the back, uh, what are we going to do next? 80s, yeah, the last slick spurts, okay. A little micro Hades, I will say, I think I forgot. To mention this, they are all 100 grain broadheads, so there is nothing strange about them all being 100 grains, they all seem to fly pretty well, they are all hitting a little bit to the right of impact or right of point, which is Totally fine, we're just looking for groups now, the last time I tried nifty tricks I had some problems with them so I don't know if that was the arrow setup, the bow setup or whatever, but I'm interested in see if this will work. land with the rest of them or if it's going to be funky it seemed pretty decent okay let's go there we'll take a look at a pretty impressive group of all of these actually um I think this was my field tip I remember it well , yes, then my field.
The tip was there, so it was a little bit up on the right and I moved it, adjusted it for elevation, probably correctly and brought it down there, but I didn't click it enough to the right. These are all broadheads that actually shot quite a bit. Incredibly amazing all of this and I think that compares to our expandable test our expandable test I was running a super small heat vein it was a four plane, right? Yeah, so I jumped up and shot these arrows. and they really tightened up, so I think that's proof that shooting a big vein is very important when shooting with broadheads, although you will have a little more noise, a little more resistance, you don't know any of that. uh it's a big deal, but it shows that it's very important to have a good flight, so we have all of these, let's take them out one by one, see what we have. uh QD Exodus, the little right of the group got Hades. right there in the middle I have the montec right there in the middle Big Hoss actually didn't do that bad, he was a little left on the lowest, it was a slick trick, but again there are human variants there and a solid group really impressive. all of these, I mean, were from 60 yards and they were all within a four inch group of each other, so they will all fly well and the most important thing, as always, is that your bow sets up your shape and your shot, as long as When your bow is set up correctly your arrows are set up correctly, you can probably get any type of broadhead to shoot well and all of these are fairly small form factor.
I'm not shooting like a big giant two-blade bevel, nothing like that if you're shooting a single giant two-blade bevel it can get interesting at longer ranges because it's so far in front, but they're very small and for a fixed blade, they all fly pretty well. , so what we're going to do now is a Noise test like we did on our expandable. Let's shoot directly over the microphone and simply compare. I know last time it was very evident that the Schwacker was the quietest and then all the others were pretty comparable. I'm interested to see if one of these will stand out as the quietest and the loudest because it does matter and how loud your girls are.
It's actually amazing to shoot from longer distances. They can't hear the deer. They can't hear your bow. goes from 30 to 40 yards, they just can't, especially with a little bit of a breeze, there are leaves outside, you just can't hear that far in the woods, but unless it's perfectly quiet, what they do here is your arrows get blown away. they direct the animal, so Let's do that to see if what we have is right, so let's do our noise test now. We will shoot in the same order. Let's do qad Exodus first, which has no ventilation slots.
It's nice. It's a very solidly built Broadhead, so it should be pretty quiet. Let's try to shoot right above the camera next to it. Well, next to the Montec, which has its fair share of vents or vent cuts on the Broadhead, so that's what we're going with. There's a little bit more noise, but I always like a little bit of venting on the Broadhead because I feel like it creates more resistance, which helps the Broadhead spin a little better and be a little more forgiving, so there are always tradeoffs. with that it's definitely a little bit louder so now we have the Magnus it should be a little bit louder because of that the big vents there and the little purge blades okay next we have the little Hades Pro vents , there are little cutouts on the blades, but they're pretty small because it's a pretty small Broadhead, oh, press the down arrow that will break in the Easter group, and last but not least, we have the Slick Trick again, a good amount of ventilation in the blades and we have four blades, so we have more.
On the surface you go and we have a tip of the field. I guess we should do that just to see very quiet compared to all the broadheads you can see. Okay, the next thing we're going to do is shoot through a sheet of plywood because we can, so for our final Redneck Broadhead testing stage, we have a really nice piece of plywood with half a circle cut out of it, um, for a little project. DIY I made a while ago, but I think it's only half of it. inch, it could be a three-quarter sheet of plywood and all we're going to do is shoot through it, we're going to see what kind of damage it does if we run through it and then we look.
Then check the broadheads and see if there's any bending or anything that's happened or maybe it'll just explode, who knows, so this will probably be loud and I'm excited to see what happens, so we'll go. In the same order once again we have the Exodus qad. I will work from left to right. This is going to be loud. Will go through that sucker. In fact, I want to see them one by one because I am very interested. Okay, it was almost a full pass, my feathers were ripped out and my arrows are going to be destroyed after this, but it's okay and Broadhead seems to be perfectly fine, intact and a little broken there, so it seems okay. to be fine, maybe everyone will be fine, who knows, G5 Montec went through that suction cup again.
This sheet of plywood might not be a problem for any of these broadheads, who knows, it went through without a problem and got a good amount of blow out the back. Let's try here again, I hope one of these just explodes, that's my opinion, we can shoot a cinder block, but you guys were offended last time we did it, okay, next thing is, Magnus went through that sucker too, no There is absolutely nothing wrong with it. This might be too easy a test for this and honestly everyone is getting stuck on downloads because that's the only problem point.
I bet if it was a bear axle, they'd fly through it. Well, we have the Hades Pro Mini. That fool went through it trapped in the ground, look at that hole, then we take this out the back. If I had to guess, that got him through just because of his size, he's so small there really wasn't much. flew through the feathers are perfectly fine, we're ready to go to the end, but not least, we have the Slick Trick that stopped, stopped without anything wrong with the Broadhead man. He really wanted one of these to explode, with the same destruction.
You know, if we had to pick one person to win, it would probably be Hades just because he blew up, but you really get it, he's a very small Broadhead, I mean, he's almost a field spike, he's very small, okay, so like conclusion of this video. I don't think there is a clear winner. The fixed blades are very interesting to me because they are all very similar, they all have the same cutting diameter, they all have about the same sharpness, they all fly about the same and you know, it's just very different compared to the expandable ones, where I feel like there is a pretty big variation of differences in how they work, how they open, the size, the layout, how much is in front of the arrow and of course we could have chosen a few different ones. some of these are like wow that's very different and things we could have and maybe we'll do that in a future video, but you know a couple of winners so it's like we have Montec and Exodus uh pretty tied on the penetration.
The sharpness test of the test was probably the skillful trick, perhaps the Grim Reaper's accuracy, they all flew well. I mean, they all landed in a group like that from 60 yards, which shows that yes, they can be adjusted, yes, they can be set up correctly. probably most of theconfigurations that exist, so it's totally fine, they all went through the sheet of plywood. The winner was probably Hades only because he's so small that he passed through it, so you'll probably be able to crush him like a rib or something. It's easier with one of these, um, there's no clear winner, um, I don't know the sound check yet because we haven't reviewed the footage, but probably The Exodus is going to win, just because there's no ventilation, you can experience some planning. this bad boy and we didn't do it at this time and it probably depends a little bit on the setup and depends on whether you have some wind or not and some longer distances, but that's why I love a little ventilation on the Broadhead, it helps with forgiveness and stability. and you sacrifice some noise, but overall they're pretty close and, uh, what you know, I've used what I've been using lately is this montec G5 and probably if I had to pick one, I know it's going to be solid. and overall, it is the best in all aspects.
Honestly, I would probably choose this one and shoot my moose with it. It worked totally fine. I set it from 20 to 100 yards and I also did it with the Hades.Broadhead when I shot the elk there were no problems I had a tune of 100 yards so I hope you enjoyed this video another interesting run with some broadheads , a very interesting and controversial topic. I'm sure they will have plenty. of concerns and questions in the comments below, have fun and we'll be sure to keep this train going with some broadsides for future videos because it's fun, it's very controversial and I enjoy making them and seeing how you guys react. and please comment and like so I hope you enjoyed be sure to check out Lancaster Archery supply for all your archery needs at lancasterretresupply.com so we'll see you guys next time thanks for watching bye.
