First Long Trip In The Mustang Mach-E! Over The Rockies To The Left Coast Battling Charging Issues

Jun 04, 2021
hello and i almost fell hello and welcome to another off spec motoring video in this video we're going on a road

trip

and it's actually pretty big road

trip

s are back friends and we have an extended range all wheel drive

mustang

mach

i for the trip let's talk about the setup where we're going why we're going and all the good stuff will be

long

but you guys like that too I so let's have a nice road trip leaving here Colorado in a beautiful and sunny. day, this is the

first

edition of the 2021 ford

mustang

mach

e, this grabber blue color is only available in the

first

edition and the gt version will be launched soon, which will be the fastest currently, this is the highest power mustang on sale , it's got about 350 horsepower so it's pretty fast, but not like a fast performance model 3, that's going to be the gt we'll be racing with the performance model y and it has 270 miles of epa rated range , so I'm excited to see how close we can match that on the road maybe.

We'll do a little range test which of course will be for another video and we need to talk about the

charging

curve and our road trip strategy. You can see here. I have it

charging

on my Tesla wall connector with a Tesla to J1772 adapter. and this will keep us actually I think we're already at a state of charge of 100. I think the answer is yes, okay, let me tell you a little bit about where we're going from here in Fort Collins, Colorado, on our new From Home to Los Angeles, California, where I have to go.

More Interesting Facts About,

I'll do some range testing and a review. Porsha was very nice and she invited me to drive. A sort of pre-production European rear-drive Tycon with German plates. I love driving. cars with European plates in the US and that will be cool so I said yeah I definitely have to do that, do the range test video for some of our other channels and come on so this 330e phev needs to charge . so let me unplug the mustang plug into the bmw. You can see our review on this on off spec reviews that's another one of our channels and I highly recommend it if you like all cars we still review electric vehicles so let's take the fully loaded mustang to los angeles let's try two things I'm really interested in, one is the charging strategy, if you haven't, I went into depth in this charging curve video on out of spec reviews that really went up to here. in the morning and by the time you see this, it would have been about a week old and this is a really wild charging curve that limits your charging speed to the maximum current based on how

long

you plugged in, so basically if you plug it in. at zero percent you'll only get a short time at 160 kilowatts, but if you plug it in at 20 you'll get a little more and we're really going to have to figure out how to road trip this thing. the ideal state of charge and we definitely don't want to go from state of charge 80 because as soon as you go to 80 it drops to 12 kilowatts on the DC fast charging curve which is crazy so we're going to have to do everything This trip with a state of charge between zero and eighty percent, of course we will fully charge it overnight in hotels, if we can find hotels with chargers this will be great.

I just activated plug-in charging. I already did. this through the Fordpass website I signed up I put in all my details they are giving us 250 kilowatt hours for free which is really good and then the rest will go on my credit card I guess so let's try and see if the route The planner directs us through fast chargers on the way to Los Angeles. The car just finished charging here at 100, so let's close the lid, of course, it's ccs j1772. It will do 48 amp onboard charging here with AC and then a peak that I've seen. 167 kilowatts, here's Alyssa, you're not coming on this trip, no, we're basically going on a road trip to drive.

Let's plug in the uh 3 series. This one only has a 16 amp onboard charger. 3.7 kilowatts, not so fast. but it has a 12 kilowatt hour battery, and how many of that 12 kilowatt hour battery are usable? I don't know, yeah, not nine kilowatt hours. It has a fairly large buffer. Say goodbye to blue, goodbye friend, we will miss you, goodbye oppa. Now I'm practically part of the family and where is it uh? Where is Ellie Ellie? There she is, goodbye, see you all in I don't know, four to five days, something like that. Well, they charge us up to 100.
You can see the 212 miles indicated again. epa this car is 270 but I've been checking it out so 200 sounds good 210 honestly that's what I get in my model 3 high performance long range again uh with uh on the highway this Ford keeps activating this laser system Here I wonder if it has to do with eye tracking, so I'll have to turn off the laser on the escort max 360 right there. I have the gopro there for the driving footage and now let's take a look at how the trip planner works. here, so what I think I'm going to do is I'm going to write los angeles, the city of angels and then where we're going is actually to gardena to pick up the Porsche uh in uh, its special thing, why can I write?
I'm clicking on everything. bad here because I'm looking at my phone, we'll go back to navigation and see what works because this also has wireless card playback so we'll see if I end up using waze on my phone or this system. here and I think it all depends on how good your route planning is so 852 miles west will be about 1200 miles by car yeah 1076 miles or so it's only 15 hours really not bad he wants us to go up and Also, we can't actually do that because there are no loaders, so it suggests the wrong path. I think that's the backup route it suggests correctly, so we'll take the initial one, it says they're tolls, no problem, let's press go. calculating 100 percent and electric vehicle chargers are being added to the ride hey this is pretty cool the alert can use voice commands while driving yeah I don't like that so it says nine chargers a total of four hours and 35 minutes, he's leading us through a load. point the DC charger from 35 minutes to 60 okay um and then electrify America completely and then evgo yeah hey this is the best route plan I've seen done so far one of the times That I tried it put me at a seven. kilowatt charger and I was like that doesn't make sense, honestly we'll probably use electrify america all the time, we can skip this charging point just 190 miles away, we'll probably stop in Lakewood or maybe a little bit in the mountains. on ea and i just tried to charge the plug so i definitely want to do that and i'm also comfortable with the ea network at the moment so i would prefer to use them as our sole power provider if possible.
No, we will use all these others well with everything configured, we are recharged to one hundred percent. I think it's time we go out, learn about the maki, find out what's charging, and see if this is a good vehicle for road trips. and we're going to los angeles now it's 1:34 p.m. now i figure we'll get to utah maybe las vegas tonight somewhere around satan george is what i'm thinking we'll find a hotel and then we get to los angeles tomorrow We're really not in a big hurry. There is a shortage of time here. We're leaving ourselves enough room so that if we have loading

issues

, we can handle them, but I say, let's load up and go, oh, beautiful views.
Here in the mountains I thought I'd take some time to talk about Ford's Copilot 360, some of the driver assistance systems I'm using here, as long as this mini doesn't crash, I don't know what it's doing. just move, there's no one there anyway, beautiful views, so co-pilot 360 is ford's driver assistance system, it's not exclusive to mustang machi. I recently reviewed an f-150 for our review channel that also had this system and right now it has limited functionality, you can see it is cornering very well, a really good system doesn't do lane changes, I don't think it ever will, but you know, basically, the lane centering is centered perfectly right now, I have to tell you that.
I'm paying attention to the driver monitoring system by touching the steering wheel and putting a little torque on the steering rack. Now in just a few months this little sensor here will be updated and it will do eye tracking similar to the super cruise system or BMW in low speed and it will actually drive itself without me putting my hands on the wheel, it will basically stay on the road and as long as my eyes are looking forward I won't have to touch the steering wheel, which I think is really good and honestly this is the level of driver assistance I like in a car.
Do I need it to be completely autonomous and take me around the city? No, it's certainly cool to try, but in terms of actual practicality for a system, this is where I spend a lot of time where people spend a lot of time commuting driving and just taking the burden off the driver during these long stretches is where these uh adas systems really help. , so anyway, enjoy the very peaceful mustang monkey here, a nice beautiful trip. The views don't really get any better and they are surprisingly very efficient. So far, well, we just went up, so we were down at 2.6 miles per kilowatt hour, but we were over three miles per kilowatt hour until the big pass into the mountains. here and I'm surprised at how well it's doing, we're going to try to get to the glenwood springs electrify america station, but we may have to stop first in frisco, so we'll see very well, welcome to beautiful glenwoods springs and, surprisingly, Three people separated from the road approached and in traffic stopped next to me and said they were watching us on YouTube.
I mean, that's crazy, we see some of our audience from time to time, but literally in that short span from the highway to here, three separate people. Well, people, thank you all for watching the channel. I appreciate the pleasure of meeting some of you, albeit very quickly. Now we are ready to try plugging and charging. This will be my first time, so I have selected them with two kilowatt stations. uh this can actually be charged at 150 and it pretty much maxes out the 150 output a little over 150. but this is what I want to talk about before we start charging originally the mustang wanted to stop miles back and I said no.
We're going to force him to get to Glenwood Springs, that's where we are now and originally it said a six percent finish, then we went up to the top of the pass, I think Okay, and then it showed a two percent finish here, but we got there with 24 .something like this and it was wrecking, I mean absolutely driving with some pretty fast cars, no key detected, phone key doesn't work either, so what this tells me is that the internal trip calculation is not factoring in elevation, anymore. You see, the thing is when I had selected At this station we were almost at the top of the hill, which means that our efficiency in the last 20, 30, 40 miles was terrible, let's say less than two miles per kilowatt hour is a guess.
However, we lost almost 8,000 feet of elevation or so, so I could. to regenerate and reload, so it was no problem getting there, so a couple of people want here. I want the machi to follow the elevation profile of the route and I also want to know the elevation profile so the Tesla can tell it here's where. it expects you to use your energy and get it back and it really helps you at the beginning of the trip to basically say if I should drive faster or slower, not any other ev, I think it doesn't do this, eh, but I wish the machine We would have a graph that shows here is where we expect it to use power and this is where we expect it to gain, so anyway let's try plugging in and charging for the first time.
The reason I haven't logged in, I know it's bothering our entire audience. Because we have the cannonball mentality, I'm in no hurry, I'm in no hurry to get there, so let's load this up so I don't touch anything on the screen, the car is completely off, all I'm going to do is pull. the connector right here in front I have to wrangle the connector give me a second this is a two handed operation these things are hard to bend okay we're connected let's see if this works I signed up for the plug and charge in Ford's website last night, it took a second to process and then it said it was activated, it's connecting to the vehicle and Ford is giving us 250 kilowatt hours of free power which is pretty good, thank you, thank you for that and it looks like It didn't work well, maybe I should try it with the car on.
I heard a couple of people say that the mustang needs to be on. Let's try it. Okay, we've got the mustang on. We are at charge state 22. Let's take the connections now. and try again plug it in this time plugged in the vehicle is on and it still says pay by credit card well that sucks I guess let me see if I should check the Ford app one more time and see if I can try something. Otherwise I'll use my own app so not onlyYou don't have to activate the plugin upload online, but you also have to enter the app and turn it on.
These are the things we are learning here. We are usually experts at this. This is the first vehicle with plug-in charging capability that I have tested. All the Tycons I've driven were 2020 because all the press cars were never 2021 so they don't admit it so basically Tycon and Machi are the only ones. two cars that support plug and charge, plus Tesla of course, so now that I've turned everything on, we get the app notifications saying we're ready to electrify America and green spaces. Actually, I didn't know. Let's try it now and voila, will the plug-in charging that we are connecting to the vehicle now work?
Let's see what happens if this works. I'll be extremely happy and I definitely spent quite a bit of time worrying around here, but think of all the time we can save if this works, so I heard the contactors click for just a second. Is this going to work? So I heard that plug charging will slightly delay the handshake, which I guess makes sense because you have more data to transfer. I have the climate control off in the vehicle right now so we are running yeah off 22 state of charge drivers door ajar I can't believe we are still using that just say its open why Is the door ajar?
This handshake is taking a while. We're going to do this in Friends in real time, because you need to experience what this is like. It says processing payment right now, which means it's online. Wow, it worked. I heard the cabinets click here. Everything works. Plugin loading man. That handshake was brutal. It was not so? like a 45 second to almost 60 second handshake that starts charging let's see what it says it will even appear as kyle what will it say hello ford welcome driver mustang maki 250 kilowatt hour Ford pass mineral equivalent charge per minute included, I see, and uh, nice. so we're definitely plug and charging on the side sessions, right?
I don't really care about the cost. I just think it works great, folks, and we're charging at, oh, not so good, 30 kilowatts, come on, with a win. and a glitch, let's see if it increases at all, it doesn't look like it's increasing at all, ah, come on, okay, I guess what I'll do is give this a second to figure out if it doesn't. I will not increase the 30 kilowatts. I'll try another station if the other station is slow then we think I may have thermally strangled the battery pack by driving it too hard up and down hills so we'll give it a second to figure that out.
Alright folks, I'm going to plug this one into the car, as long as it arrives, it looks like it will, so let me operate with two hands again, let's plug this one in, now we have it plugged into the other 350 kilowatts that I'm imagining. Plug-in charging will work. Handshakes are usually pretty good with the Mustang. He's had a couple of problems. I'm not sure why it was limited to 30 kilowatts. I hope this goes up because I really don't think we have thermally throttled the transmission. because I don't hear the A/C cooler running on the machine, so let's give this another 60 seconds and I'll update with the loading speed.
Well, we're all connected and ready for plug-in charging with the Ford. pass charging, which is very nice of them to do that, but again, that's the equivalent of 77, I just think it would have been easier for them to not include the free charging and, oh no, 30 kilowatts again, which means it's something on the mustang side, holy shit there's no way. We're going to get to California with 30 kilowatts, guys, okay, I think I need to try the 150 kilowatt station because these are the 350s. I heard a couple of little bugs with the Abb 350s, although I charged someone the other day, it was perfect. um yeah, we'll try this 150 right here, I'll park here and if that doesn't work, we're screwed, let's try this, we're cleared, this time it took a full 60 seconds for it to connect.
Good tycoon just rolled up. Also, let's try this 150 kilowatt charger and see if it works faster and, friends, this is all you want to carry 31 kilowatts. I guess we overheated it, but what's crazy is that I don't hear the battery cooler running. Maybe I need to click on climate control, although I don't think that's true because when I did my load test the other day, the cooler was turning on even though I had the climate control off. A very kind woman who owns this Tycon, here she is. driving it from seattle to wisconsin is her first road trip in electric vehicles, she said she has had almost no problems, but you can tell she is not a professional by plugging it in at a state of charge of 56 that is no way to travel by road, a tycoon you have to plug it in to zero so now let's see what this thing does it says full accessories power fast charging active at eighty percent in an hour and forever oh my god okay guys I actually logged out , I logged back in here with my own personal swipe app and we're shooting at 160 kilowatts, so here's what I think.
I think the minute-long handshake process takes so long that something scares it and limits the charging current to so low, I mean, less than 100 amps and that's maybe a problem with Ford's plug-in charging. right now, but anyway, I pulled up my app and we're up to 156 kilowatts, no problem. I guess we didn't overheat the maki, we just confused it with the handshake process, well this is much better, we had just gradually reduced it. 150 kilowatts or so up to 110. I looked, we should have about 500 seconds at 110 kilowatts until it drops. 32 initial charging status. I don't know what the next station is, but we'll take a look now while we're loading. at good speeds, man, that was frustrating and annoying.
I still don't know the root cause, but I think the extended handshake has something to do with it. I called our friend evie dave, this is actually evie dave's shit, he bought it for us to use. for the videos and for her channel, so thanks to Evie Dave for letting us use the Mustang and I called him and he said, "Oh, Ford is holding you back because they're giving it away." I just don't think they're doing this intentionally, I think. They want the best customer experience, but maybe I give them too much credit, who knows, I don't think they would, so let's go to Los Angeles, see if it recognizes that we are connected to a charger or not and will give us the correct information. guidance from there, so we can actually go to recent destinations and we can go to Los Angeles, California, and driving options, that one and let's see what it says, the calculation happens quickly.
Eevee chargers are being added fairly quickly, obey traffic laws, stay alert and use the correct commands while driving, says 88 miles to Sam's Club at 49 percent and then to Green River Coffee Walmart in days. I mean, this is a really good route plan. I can't argue with it. 88 miles, although I think we should get out. Here and we go because we're already down to what that says, 44 kilowatts. Oh my goodness, let's take a look. There's no kilowatt meter on the Mustang, so you have to rely on the display here, which is super annoying. 44 kilowatts. Because? It would diminish?
I don't understand, it should work at least 70 now 35 kilowatts. Oh come on, we're having some strange

issues

today, maybe this wasn't as big a loading error as I thought. The connectors there are fine. I think we have enough juice to get to Green River Coffee, it's all downhill from here so I'm sorry I have to use the next charger. The problem is that one is very far from the highway, but the charger after that is quite far down the road, so I don't want to do too deep a charge here, I'd rather just get out and head to uh, I can't even remember the name of the town, the one at Sam's Club, anyway, it's 88 miles down the road, let's go now.
Because 44 kilowatts is not good, let's go quickly with the GoPro clip here. You can see I made these graphics from our Tycon Cannonball Drive. This was our travel plan and we followed the exact same route, so this is how I'm putting it all together. My elevation data at Glenwood Springs can see that we lose 3200 feet, so I can rip it as hard as I want. Does Colorado get more beautiful than this? We are very lucky to live in this state. Look at the mountains around us. absolutely beautiful, great view in the rear view mirror too and man are those peaks just beautiful in the distance, love it, love this steak so we have arrived in Glenwood Springs with 29 miles of projected rain. 12 says now do you want to recharge your batteries? required on ev stations, well the thing is it should know that we are on a station and then it should tell us please plug it in and charge it here during this time. uh you would think simple things would be clever very nice uh subaru wrx although not digging the wing on a non rigid uh the door handles on maki by the way they work like this you press this button and then there's a little plunger that extends here at the bottom that pushes the door out so you just push and then pull right here on this pretty interesting little handle, let's open up the charging port and try to plug it in and charge it this time.
I drove easier on this drive just to try and keep the battery temperature down, cool it down if that played a role, I'm not. sure, so let's take the connector, bring it, plug it in, give me a second to put this in, here we go, we're connected, let's see if this time it takes 60 seconds with the plug charging, I'm not sure if it's first. The experience was representative of the technology, let's see, we are six seconds out of eight seconds in this process. Now, let's give it a little time in the meantime, I turned off the simulated Mustang and, yeah, nice, nice charger, I'm starving here. a golden corral, I don't know if I'm that hungry, but I don't see anything else either.
There's a taco over there that's not much better, there's not much else around here, so I think it might be a golden corral. For me, we will see that we are still communicating 40 seconds after this process, it says processing the payment and once it processes the payment, it will start charging. I guess it should start uploading and then if it can't process the payment just turn it off. the way I would do it for the customer experience because I'm sure ninety percent of the time the payment will be made by starting the charge okay the contactors are going mustangs happy I turned it off but the headlights they're still on that's pretty strange oh i got the man headlights on manually that's it here we go 250 kilowatt hours charging the ford pass everything seems to work right there fingers crossed we see over 30 kilowatts coming on 72 still not well, but uh oh 129 hey, the ford pass free charging thing like that I guess it has nothing to do with that handshake, who knows why we had those problems there then, maybe it's something that was mixed up, but, Hey, 155 kilowatts, I'll take it, we'll charge it up to, uh, no.
I know maybe 50 60 70 we'll see how long the next one lasts. The cars look great and get a little dirty, but man I love this etching blue color on the mustang, it just pops. You know, if I had to buy one, maybe I would. It would go gray or black or something that blends in, but for the camera, the thumbnails for the video, yeah, blue all day long, I was on my way to come up with dinner plans and we got a bug in the upload session, It said energy report, energy port. Fan failure and I assume that means the fan to cool the cable failed.
I'm not totally sure. Let's try it one more time, but this time I think I'll connect it to this station. Oh my god, this is just me talking about the Tesla. The experience is so much better than this, there's just no way around it. This is painful, but honestly, it won't get better unless we highlight the problems and hope for the best and push the technology. That's why I'm committed to road trips. no-tesla still just to power these things, so now we're trying to charge this, this charger showed up as unavailable. uh, I don't know if you can actually see that on your screen, here we're going to check it, done.
You can see the two red dots, so maybe I chose the wrong charger. I didn't say that when I arrived. Now we're in the middle of the 60-second handshake. I mean, it feels like you could, you know, run a mile. run a marathon while holding hands. I have talked to the CTO of electrify america, who is a friend, about this handshake process and he told me that there is nothing we can do to speed up the handshake process because we must follow the protocol that he created true and the problem is simply changing the protocol. Come on, this is crazy.
You know there's no way we're going to have 60-second handshake times in the future. You plug a v3 supercharger into a Tesla Boom five seconds after that thing. is generating 250 kilowatts directly through theport, maybe it's not so safe, but I haven't died yet, so how unsafe can it really be? Anyway, let's check this out right here, we're charging, working great, plug and charge worked and we're on. charging at 155 kilowatts awesome I love it 156 kilowatts really good uh charging session now I think I'm going to run and get some food at least the ford pass app lets me know when charging fails uh which is really cool okay guys I ducked I had dinner at the Golden Corral, man it was that terrible, only people there were screaming and people were breathing on the food.
I don't know, I was very unpleasant, so I can't say that I recommend the Golden Corral. going on a valentines date or something anyway bad news the ford pass app has been screaming at me for the last 20 minutes to move the car because of the inactivity fees because it crashed again but i wasn't going to shorten my golden corral dinner. so I will pay whatever the idol fees are, although I still think they should reimburse me. I'll have to call them to let them know it's no big deal the station failed and then they'll bill me for dinner anyway the station just Behind me here the maki is sitting there not charging I can't imagine it charged much because it happened as soon as I sat down man what a ride so far guys what a ride let's hope it gets better.
I'm going to move on to 150 Kilowatt Unit because we haven't tried one of those yet, maybe that's the magic trick, it's just using the 150, fingers crossed, let's try it and here's the error, a vehicle protocol error. I have seen this three times for this mustang. on different chargers in different places and not just with electrify america, so let's go here and try that one over there, I guess we could have been charged enough to leave, but no, we're at 33 and we have just started our 60 handshake seconds hoping we can load something here and then we'll head to Utah.
I'd like to try to get to St. George tonight. I know it's a big question, but we'll see. I guess we'll go until I get tired and find the nearest hotel with the destination charger. This will be the goal, as on every road trip. I must say this is a good car ride. Is incredible. I really think that's the only problem with this. the car is the load, the efficiency has been very good so far, it's just this hassle of dealing with the networks and honestly i think it's not on the ea side for the most part, maybe the failed station was, but You know it's certainly both of your faults. but I really think a lot of these are in the early Mustang software that is causing some of these little bugs and hesitations, but nothing like standing in the middle of a Sam's Club parking lot at night in Colorado to solve your charging issues, right?
TRUE? right, and yeah, charging 125 kilowatts right here, let's see if it updates and goes up at all, it doesn't look like I'm going to guess, it's just that I can live with 125 kilowatts, that's fine, I'll take it well, hey, I just put it on. The thing is, I'm going to close this real quick because I wanted to show you that this is good and now it's gone, where did it go anyway? It said we arrived and this is how long we need to charge to be able to Wow, the problem is it doesn't say anywhere how long it wants me to stay, it just says charging at 80.
What it should say is how many kilowatts are you doing first, your time up to 80, your maximum time and how much longer. what you need to get to your next destination taking into account the weather driving style traffic elevation wind man no one can do this right uh oh friends charging station fault c manual okay let's see what the charging station error is sorry this is happening every five minutes or so it says reason for stop vehicle protocol error again well I guess we'll just unplug and plug back in I guess that's really the only thing we can do here so man this is a rubbish experience, a real rubbish experience and I hate being one. that guy because I'm the one putting more pressure on non-Tesla electric vehicles than anyone saying we can make the future easy, we can make charging work seamlessly and here I am constantly dealing with this nonsense every time I drive my model 3 to anywhere, it's super easy And again, I hate when people say things like this because I think no, we broke the record at Tycon New York to LA, it's doable, it's cool, but unfortunately this is reality and there is no way to sweeten it, you know?
I'm going to show you exactly what happens, uh, and as it goes, we go back to 127 kilowatts, let this puppy charge for now and I'll let you know if we have any more problems, otherwise we'll charge enough. to get to the next station, okay, we have a state of charge up to 57. I think we should leave. Let's go to Green River Coffee. It's a hundred miles away. The car waits for a charge of 30 minutes. Let's remember that. and let's see how long it actually takes us to load. It should be an hour and 25 minutes of driving.
In fact, let's take a look. I can see the details. I can see it's a 150 kilowatt station, although I think it's a 350. It's on the Ford. red, although maybe the mustang doesn't care because it is rated up to 150 it is rated 10 out of 10, not sure what service and payment is required yes, everything sounds good, what happens if I press replace and then I can choose what other stations I want? I want to do around there um, we could just wait and load a little bit more and get to this, whatever it is, let's see what this loader is, it won't let you click on it, of course, ah, this is frustrating, okay?
I'm going to see if it makes sense to wait and charge and stretch it to here or do a quick recharge there and then go to this one, so I agree with what the car says about going to Green River, that makes sense and then this. It's not an EA station, next up is Celina which is 238 miles from here, we're not going to charge that far so let's get out of here, I honestly can't even see what kind of charging speeds we're getting. I have no idea why it's not shown on the car, so let's go here. 102 kilowatts is not bad, not bad.
We keep it here at 100 kilowatts and then we go to Green River. It's hard because it doesn't really stick. above 100 during that time, I say, as soon as we go down as soon as we go below 100 kilowatts, let's unplug and that's it, that will be the plan with the current load profile of the mustang maki, it doesn't necessarily make sense to drain completely to zero by throwing the lowest possible so you can draw the maximum current until it goes down like most EVs like Tycon like the model three that you're used to seeing on this channel.
The Mustang Mock e gives you more power for longer if you arrive with a higher state of charge and this is their arbitrary charge profile limited based on predictive temperature but not actual sensor data, they are just slowing it down because they think It could get hot, the thing is you can simply unplug and replug and get full speeds. We'll do that test another day, but stay tuned to our reviews channel for all the load tests. Let's take a look if we go below 100 kilowatts, but it is very annoying to find that the load is not at 102.
We will stay. here and then you know, if we go into the green river with uh 30 40 cool, we'll get higher speeds for longer, that's the fastest move right now. We just charged up to 67 states of charge, the charging session failed again and we had just gone below 100 kilowatts, so I was going to leave anyway, so this is our forced exit each. Yeah, we'll get out of here, don't worry, I guess we'll just keep trying to see if this problem goes away. the trip, let's save this charger here, boom and now let's see, yeah, we gained 22 kilowatt hours in 12 minutes, which is not bad, look, the charging curve is great if you start deeper in the pack, it just sucks if you start here below. low so you have to unplug and plug back in, just proves my theory that the quickest way to road travel in a mustang is to plug it in and unplug it, which unfortunately you already have to do because of all the breakdowns in the seasons, How ironic, come on, welcome to Green River. cafe, this is a bit of a strange exit because there is a road that runs parallel to the highway right here, the highway turns down and comes back, this goes straight, so even though it is quite far from the highway, you are still moving in the same direction , so it doesn't really bother me too much, the superchargers are right on the other side of the bridge there where we stopped.
We've also been to this EA station a couple of times, I plugged it in and it flashes red. and it says charging station failure on my phone, you can't see that but it still says it's connecting to the vehicle so let's disconnect the cash, why are there so many problems with this? Okay, let's disconnect it, let's take this connector. Everything says it's available, so let's go. try this here by connecting the boom, let's see if this works now. I don't understand why it would make a difference depending on what handle you use, you would think everything would be the same and the car flashes red, is that because? locked I didn't mean to lock it maybe I'll just hold the door open and it says connects to the vehicle and the vehicle says fails again, you've got to be kidding me come on, driver's door ajar, full accessory power to start hitting the brake. it doesn't say any charging station failure right here, okay let's test this station, so I've already connected this station here, it's 150 kilowatts and it's also the chatimo unit, so hopefully no leaves will appear, although we really are in the middle of Utah here, I don't think there are many leaves traveling across the country.
I can't imagine they live in this city, that would be cool, although now it says connect the vehicle and now the car seems happy, so "I'll let him do it, let him do his handshake, what am I trying to say? Let him do it." this charges Hopefully this works now It's always a good idea when you apparently have a Mustang to park in a place where you can plug it in from multiple chargers you don't necessarily have to move the car it seems like everything is fine everything has been. OK, we're starting charging here, hey, this is pretty cool guys, a 150 kilowatt unit, maybe I'll try those instead of the 350 for now, but I had problems on the last 150, so I really shouldn't do a difference and we'll continue to use Ford's free charging service, which is really amazing, and there we go, 73 kilowatts, 102 kilowatts, well, we'll take whatever we can get at this point it looks like we have a peak here of 124 kilowatts, that. is all she wants to take, it's really not great loading speeds.
Honestly, you know Ford claims 150 kilowatts, but look, I don't know how they can claim that if you only use it for such a short period of time under certain conditions, I really think automakers should share charging curves as part of the data with electric vehicles, you know, rather than put us through all the trouble and try it, we're certainly happy to do it, which keeps us in business honestly. I was talking to my dad about this on the phone, where the only reason we're doing what we're doing is because everyone else is doing things wrong, so I guess selfishly this is good for us, but we really hope I mean personally.
I want this to work and this is frustrating for me, not just because I'm trying to get to Los Angeles, which is not my main concern, it's just because I keep thinking about what would happen if my mom bought a mustang and if someone who didn't does. I don't really know cars that have bought one of these things and this is their experience this sucks so I really like it I don't even remember how I got here but I got here somewhere in the menus and it says it wants it to load. at 57 so it won't take us long then it says go to the Walmart super center next charger well, cool, I don't know what city it's in and I can't see, I know it's an electrified United States, um, but I can.
I don't zoom in here to see where the next charger is, so I might have to do it manually, so to see where you're thinking of taking me, uh electrify america, walmart, 30 minute charge, so that's the next place, So, this is the one. Let's see what city it is, it's a landing strip, how am I supposed to see what city this is? Oh my gosh, simple things, people, simple things, I have no idea about Richfield, Utah, okay, so that's going to be our next stop in Richfield, let's see if I can do a calculation to see how much more time we need to get to Richfield.
I manually entered our next stop, which will be Salina Utah. I like this stop because it's literally right off the highway, it's very easy to get to and if I remember correctly. The new Signet units I want to test with the Mustang might be wrong on that, but I think they're the new Signet units anyway, we'll find out. We are at a state of charge of 48. I have no way of knowing how fast we are going. We are loading without leaving, someone isburning something around here, it smells very good like a wood fire and we are still consuming kilowatts, which is pretty good, so from 20 to 48 that we have done, we go down to less than 100 kilowatts, so 15 minutes we have gained 26 kilowatt hours 14 minutes 26 kilowatt hours you know, that's not terrible, it's certainly not anything excitingly good, but I have to say it's not a terrible session.
What the hell while I'm talking? It literally just failed. it has to be me vehicle protocol error as usual now look this says it's the vehicle error look what the mustang says the mustang says this is great this is great i love this the mustang says charging station failure then the charger says hello The car is the problem The car says Hello, the problem is the charger Both companies are trying to protect themselves, I guess this is the tenth time this has happened to me in the last five hours. I restarted the charging session and we're all on our way back to 130 kilowatts honestly there's no reason to leave now I guess this is what I do is when it starts to drop below let's say a hundred and uh I don't know 105 kilowatts unplug plug back in because uh yeah, we might even be able to stretch it past Salina and head to Richfield or even further if we can get a good loading curve, so we'll try that now.
We've phased down to 86 kilowatts just four minutes since uh. We've been charging, but I think it's time to go because now we've probably reached the internal charging profile where it can actually accept more than 100 kilowatts than you imagine in the car, so let's put it back on and the good news is. We'll get to Salina or Richfield, we'll figure it out along the way depending on our efficiency with a higher state of charge than we would have, which means it'll probably charge a little faster, so let's fire this puppy up. boop in reverse and that's it, also here's a bit of a fun thing with the rear view camera on, you can adjust the heated seat.
Look, I'm going to hit the heated seat and it won't work, but if I put it in reverse and hit it. heated seats now I can that's been bothering me the same with the fan speed and all the other things so many weird bugs so many weird bugs oh and I

the charging port ajar I love that that's a jar too ah, I'm used to my power charging port on taikon and tesla, i forgot about this, having to do this manually is a very amateur move, although i'm not a fan of power charging ports, i actually prefer manual ones to turn out less bad because , as you can, Tell me that there are quite a few things that go wrong.
We went outside the specifications. We road tripped here, we went up to a high elevation, the only thing I know. Because the mustang doesn't take elevation into account on the ride when I plotted those Tycon uh graphs for our cannonball, I know we gained a total of 1,234 feet from the station, but we went up about six or seven thousand feet and then came back. It went down a ton so now I'm hoping it starts going crazy, but the good news is that after this hill it's all downhill towards the city. I lowered the speeds to 65 just for a moment in case I miscalculated, but there's the downhill sign. so I think it will be good to start picking up speeds here folks, well a little midway update here, not much to see honestly I haven't seen any other passenger vehicles on this stretch just trucks and very few de There's a very desolate road here on I-70 heading towards, I guess, 15.
Very interesting, the Mustang Maki, of course, doesn't do GPS calculations, so every time I get to the top of a hill it says that I'm out. of charger range, good luck, you know you're not going to get anywhere and then at the bottom of the hill, you know I have, you know, at least six miles of buffer, I think we're going to get there with a low state of charge. but we'll be totally fine, the last 15 or 20 miles or so are downhill, so as long as I can make the last ridge we'll cruise into town. uh, you know, I'm certainly glad I did that little extra recharge in Green River.
I should have checked the elevation maps before setting out on this stretch. I always forget how hilly this stretch is, but I have to say the mustang didn't do anything to help me here, he just said we were ready to go and then of course. He has been yelling at me

and right that I couldn't get to the charger. Very interesting. Welcome to Salina Utah. This will be the first time we charge with a Signet ccs fast charger. We will take this connector. This will be the easiest way to get into the car. I say that although I have to hang up the phone, it's a little cold, the cables are getting a little colder, it's 40 degrees, the car is at eight percent charge.
Look, the mustang shouldn't have been scared. because I should have known we had that big drop into the city, um, pretty crazy, I actually just went to look at some hotels in the area, excuse me, hotels in the area that have a j1772 charging port, uh, and there aren't any of course. loaded hotels uh honestly there are no hotels at all so that's interesting we might have to keep going down the road. I'm getting quite tired. I honestly wanted to stop here, but we'll do some research and see if I can. finding a place looks like this connected very well the handshake didn't take as long as it has at least and we're loading let's look at the speeds man it's windy out here yeah those aren't great speeds come on come on come up, uh, what the hell is this thing doing there? come on well it definitely interacts with signet units totally different than abb units I'll tell you and now it's increasing, increasing, increasing, well that's how it should be whoa 152 Very good, good loading, so you can see here , we're down to 98 kilowatts at 40 percent, let's unplug and plug back in and see if we can go faster here, so I'll stop the charging session by pressing unlock there. unplug, we're going to press finish finish, let's go and now we're going to plug back in, so while we let this ramp and plug back in basically, I'm testing to see if it'll go back up to 150 kilowatts or if it stays at a hundred, I guess that we will obtain maximum speeds again.
The nearest hotel with the charger is two hours away. I forgot to bring my tesla to j1772 adapter, but that hotel is still an hour away. I'm pretty tired, so what I'm going to do here is charge as much as I can handle tonight while the battery is warm and everything is fine, then we'll wake up in the morning. I'll try to find a wall plug plug it into a hotel here there's quality comfort in a super eight for some reason the super 8 has by far the highest rating so I guess we'll stay there they're all like 65 bucks I want say. there are no good options here we are increasing 95 kilowatts one hundred two hundred six 113 120 130 140 155 165 165 peak what difference does it make now the question is whether we are going to stay at this speed long enough to justify all the time we just spent connecting the answer is maybe I'm not so sure we'll have to do a test at some point, but not tonight, so now we're doing 160 kilowatts on the car, which is great, I wish they would do that. improve the charging curve because the battery can handle it, just let it have it and we're going to charge up to at least 50 to 70 percent here, then go to the hotel to sleep, try to find a wall outlet to wake up to.
Pick it up and break it down, heat everything up on the way to the charger because it's probably going to be a little cold tonight, it's already in the 40s so man I'm getting tired, pretty good road trip, glad we're going to spend the time. night here in salina utah there are a lot of hotel rooms available so let's go find a place we just walked out of the hotel here nothing special but it really wasn't terrible it's pretty clean behind me you can see the mustang plugged in so last night i charged up to uh 50 52 at the electrify america station the ford app shows you the real time status of the battery pack but you have to refresh it it doesn't show how fast it's charging so let's see how much we recharge. uh, we're right down the street from that charger.
There were only shitty hotels. I really wanted to try and find one with the destination charger but I was pretty tired but this hotel here is Super Eight and I can't necessarily recommend staying at it. uh, in the middle of salina utah, they were kind enough to let me plug into their 110 outlet right in front and, uh, because the walls were so thin, I could hear people walking by our room saying, "Oh, that's the one the electric mustang, so let's log out and look at our status for the day, wow, we actually gained quite a bit of juice, so we're at a state of charge of 67, which is awesome, so I'm going to grab some breakfast to go, jump in and we're I'm going to the next station Thank you so much to these guys for letting me charge overnight beautiful views here in Utah and here's the trip plan the car wants us to go 77 miles to. days and then another 100 131 137 everything seems pretty good uh we'll see if we can extend it beyond these days here I think that's the one from Richfield I could be wrong we'll see let's get going and when we start getting low , we'll look for the next available charger and I'll be keeping an eye out to make sure we don't pass one where there's a big gap with a lot of stations along this route, so let's rock, I have to say Guys, yesterday was a little frustrating road tripping with the Mustang Maki, first we had those charging issues with the plug, then we had those issues where it would stop randomly, but I have to say last night on the Signet chargers, the last charging stop went smoothly, we got disconnected. as soon as we were ready to go so far it's been a really interesting experience all the way around and totally inconsistent which to me is the most annoying thing if we had a problem and we had it over and over again and I could replicate it then we have a identified problem that we can then go to Ford and electrify America and say, Hey guys, this is what we found, which I would definitely do, you know we're very lucky.
In my job reviewing cars, I get to know. all the people who make the cars and ideally I want to show how good they are because I love cars and I love electric cars and I love pushing technology, but if it's not good I can't show how good it is, obviously I'm going to go. to show you the real thing, the real thing, so the problem for me right now is just the inconsistency of the software in the car, the chargers, I think just the fan problem is the only one we had in Grand Junction, it was the only one.
Any problems, maybe I'm wrong, but we're going to merge onto the freeway here toward i-70. Beautiful views, you have to see this. Check this out. They have to forgive the dirty windshield. It is a typical out of specification. trip, but look how beautiful this Utah landscape is, as Stradman would say, views upon views in Utah, absolutely beautiful. I'm going to activate copilot 360 right here, we should be stuck there, come on, speed limits 80, why am I going so slow? I have to go. 85 let's go 90 in the mustang we can burn some juice and warm things up before the chargers come let's rock welcome to Beaver Utah it was really windy today really windy actually I mean we were dragging all the way, I drove uh relatively fast. to warm up the battery because again it stayed overnight right on level one, we are connected to the abb units, which we had problems with, although someone had commented on my Twitter a moment ago and said they were having problems with the signet units. the same ones we've been experiencing so yeah I'm not totally sure what's going on here let's get this up and running and see if it works fine plugged in connecting charging on first one working these screens are hard to see , 72 kilowatts, let's see. we get a little more, sometimes it takes until the next frame update, yeah there we go, 145 kilowatts plugged in at state of charge 20, which Ford says is the ideal state of charge to plug in the mustang, so let's charge this up to what the hell 161 kilowatts hell yeah I just ran around the store to get a phone holder for a little live stream I was planning on doing off road so let's check out the charger here tap to come back okay , I have touched, let's go there.
We're still going at 107 kilowatts folks, this isn't bad, just plug it in at 20, it might be ideal, I mean look, 100 kilowatts in a 100 kilowatt hour package is pretty bad at this state of charge, but all things considered other things we have used. This is not terrible, please forgive the wind noise. I'm setting up to start live streaming with my phone, so I'm using another camera. Here we have a charge of up to 57 states of charge. We are at 79 kilowatts. I think it's time. to go, so let's press this. I'm going to start thetear it apart and see how it drives in performance situations while cruising around town and all of those videos will be in out of spec reviews so be sure to follow along and then we'll pick up this video again when we're done testing the range of the rear wheel drive Porsche Tycoon and We will return to Denver in just two days from now.
I will receive two videos. so you guys don't have to ask for more road trips and two, it just makes these things a little more manageable to watch I think, so stay tuned for the next road trip, which will be road tripping with the grabber blue mustang maki from now on. Los Angeles, back home to Fort Collins, Colorado, big elevation gain, it's going to be tough, we'll see if we can do it and I'll see if the load improves. I'm going to plug this thing into level two. and go to bed
