May 30, 2021
Hi everyone, I'm Shannon, welcome back to my channel. I'm so excited to share this showcase

makeover

with you, so be sure to stay tuned until the end and I'll share with you the before and after of the full

makeover

, of course I will. I'll walk you through all the steps of how I transformed it in this tutorial and just to let you know that we were gifted this

cabinet

and it wasn't necessarily the style that I was going for initially. I didn't really want a glass front, uh, porcelain.

cabinet

only for the shine of the glass.

I also wanted to add a coffee maker and there just wasn't enough room with the doors so the first thing I did was remove the glass shelves and then I started a demo on this cabinet, I will say it's an old cabinet but it's not antique so I didn't feel so bad about doing it on top of it. It is all made of wood, so it is a solid and beautiful piece and you will not believe what happened before. after now the doors had some support pieces on the front so I grabbed my multitool and quickly realized that there were some screws coming up from the bottom of those support pieces.

I tried using that multitool and a crowbar. and I took this whole thing off the front, but I definitely needed Brian's help to remove the entire top, lay it on its side so I could get to those screws, so here we see it after removing the glass and the front door. I also took this opportunity to fill some holes with some putty while Brian worked on removing the bottom shelf. I ended up keeping the top shelf. I removed all the hardware from this piece. I'm going to reuse some of it and then get a new one for other parts, which you'll see a little later, and I also removed the doors and the old ones, it has a lot of furniture polish and residue that builds up over time. so i went ahead and used d polish to go over the entire surface.

This simply takes away the shine and gives the primer some tack for the paint to adhere to, so this isn't necessarily something you have to do first. chalk paint everything except for a piece this size, I definitely didn't want any of my chalk paint to peel or chip so I went ahead and deglossed it. It's super quick and easy, just put a little bit on a clean cloth, you can see. I'm wearing gloves to apply it, you don't want it to get on your hands or skin so it requires a little bit of dirt, grease and buildup so I recommend this, it's not necessary. a lot and it's also pretty inexpensive so let me stop for a second so I can show you in detail what I'm using to paint this cabinet and that's this Kills chalk paint it's only from Walmart and I'm using the platinum ring color .

Walmart right now doesn't have a lot of paint in stock and especially chalk paint so they didn't have white and only had another very dark black color so this is what I decided to use. Based on the options I had and then to apply the paint, I'm using this vintage shade brush set, so I've used it as you can see on different pieces of furniture. I bought it on Amazon. I'll be sure to link to it. in the description box it comes with a few different brushes as you can see to get into the details which I'm definitely going to need because of the dental molding on the top as well as the detail on the door. foreheads and stuff like that, but I love this set because it comes with a natural soap so you can reuse your brushes and keep them pretty and they also come with other little things, but check the description box to see them if you're interested like me.
I said the paint is just from Walmart and then let me show you my plan for the china cabinet so now that I have my piece prepared I'm going to add a little more painter's tape because on the back I love the look of these vertical lines of slats. What's happening is like a beadboard, so I thought instead of painting it all the same color. Oops, instead of painting it all the same color, I would paint it white to make it look more like the traditional bead board and then the shelf as well. I'm going to paint white too, so everything blends in on the inside, but the outside is what will get the gray color from the platinum ring, so even the shelf down here and the inside and all the drawer fronts and the fronts of the doors, so I'm going to go ahead, get to work and finally start painting.
He he he he he he hey hey ooh hey hey ooh now I decided I was going to go ahead and keep the door hardware, but I was going to buy a new drawer. posts for the drawer fronts, so I'm painting the door hardware with two coats of black spray paint and then I also sealed them with a clear matte finish coat, so let me update you here. I ended up adding three coats of gray. chalk paint on everything but the back, that's my next step. The first coat applies a little slowly because you have to make sure you cover everything.
The second coat goes on a little quicker and the third coat I just wiped it here and there to make sure I had everything covered and let it sit for a few hours. I'm going to go ahead and remove all the tape from the back windows and then I'm going to start working on painting the windows. white that's going to go on the shelf and that backing, as you can see, this is after one coat of white, it took me three coats total to make sure everything was covered and then while those coats were drying in between, I went back. and read, added the hardware which I had painted black and it gave it such a beautiful updated look.
I had to wait a couple of days for my new hardware to arrive in the mail from Amazon, but here's the before and after look at the new drawer posts, I'll be sure to put them in the description box if you're interested in them , but as you can see, it was a great transformation from something that was a little retro to something that is more modern and updated with that beautiful

farmhouse

finish. I had a lot of fun recreating this piece. It really went from retro to much more modern. It's the biggest piece of furniture I've ever renovated and I had so much fun that I can't wait to make a big piece like this again, especially making such a big change like removing the glass from the front uh I finally have my curig here so upside down You couldn't access the sides except through that middle door and everything else was kind of stationary, so I love that everything is open and accessible now and I can't wait to finish this for all the different holidays and seasons.
