I know we can't take all the credit. Yes, it's a beautiful place and that was one of the big ones. Brina's keys, the little house here was the location, yes, you have two young girls, yes, and this is literally a playground here, isn't it?

You know they are perfectly prepared for anything they might want or need and I think that's what made the transition from living in a full-sized house to living in a small house so easy and seamless for the girls and for us, actually, yeah, and that's the key, even other outdoor activities a lot of the time, and that was one of the big goals: it's working. It went very well and we are very happy to be here. You even have a pool with a reserve tank with a floating swan that is far away and ridiculous. is very good and this is where I grew up and, Honestly, it has a lot of memories of the kids being outside and that's part of the reason we moved to a small house to be outside, have more family time and now we're close to family which is the best, really. closer, yeah, so I think our situation is maybe a little different than the typical small house, maybe family or individuals, is that we were looking at this for a certain period of time, so Joel and I are very fortunate to to be able to build another house and we were looking for what would be the best option for that kind of in-between time, as soon as we saw the tiny house, we thought I know this is a great opportunity to show our girls what it's like to live in a tiny life, simply and not focus so much on the big houses.

You know a lot of things, a lot of clutter and maybe just focusing on what's really important. That ultimately comes down to family for me, as an airline pilot, as a career, it was very important to me, especially because when I'm away I know that Emma and the girls are safe and I have that feeling of security here in Italy that was what was really cool about us being in the little house and on his parents' property, so what inspired the building of the little house? I remember seeing the first tiny house on HGTV and I remember thinking I would love to have it. opportunity to design a space that not only had the limitations of small living, but also something that still felt like a much smaller house than a conventional house, so when I first saw it, I remember slowly putting the idea in Joel's head and this was before we even had kids so it was like should we do it as a young couple or should we try to, you know, move up the property ladder, but once we found out we were going to go for I thought 100% we are doing a farm right, but in the country it will be a

to us, especially in Canada, it almost symbolizes like the cozy

home

that you know, the farm where you grow up. your own garden and that's why we try to incorporate mature planters and good little gardens to try to make it feel like it's an established farm.

Hmm, you've definitely achieved that really beautiful quintessential farmhouse look on this. You can talk with me? about the construction and some of the materials we use, the house is built of 2x4 and then cedar clad and the exterior also has standard windows so it is very insulated as well as the tin roof and foam insulation on spray, so I mean it can be heated. This thing with a candle is essentially so well insulated that we almost never use the heat and how big is the little house? It measures 30 feet long, eight and a half wide, and thirteen and a half high.

We actually wanted to make it a little longer, but it's a bit of a complicated path to get here, so the builders recommended 30 feet as the longest and, in fact, we're downright pretty happy. I feel like we had a vision of what we wanted it to look like and I feel like it's even surpassed that now. I feel at home from the day we try to be homely, so we love it from start to finish, you just nailed that farmhouse vibe to the point of being freshly baked, you know, like I said before, the whole farmhouse vibe It automatically feels cozy. and kite, so we were trying to implement like the hutch.

You always see an old hutch on farms and you know they have things like galvanized play and you know the dishes and everything, yeah I think the farm is that place where you come home for a good home cooked meal and somewhere where it's not extravagant but it's homey and beautiful in its own right and that's what I think was a really good job of capturing here, she certainly did and you're immediately greeted by this wonderful definitely gives off that very homey feeling, yeah that was one of the things , so there's a list that Joel and I made for things we wanted to have in a small house as a family of four, so one of them was big enough. kitchen so the girls could come and go upstairs and feel like they have to get out of my space when I'm in the kitchen and then another one had a decent sized table that we could pull out so we could still have family meals because I don't want us to live small and not let's forget why we did this enough, yes exactly, what is really quality time to spend time with the family and not have so many things and things to do, but focus on our daughters. and then a kitchen that looks like it's crying out to be cooked, complete with the bread box, right, and you can tell we're parents of young children, so we have two different medicinal coffee makers.

Of course, it's also true that building a small house for a family is a totally different ball game, there are so many different aspects to consider, like knowing that the kids wash their hands and knowing that it overflows, whereas when you're just Designing for maybe a single person or a couple, you don't have to consider as many variables as we might have done with another much smaller refrigerator. Oh, completely, you know things like that, but you know this gives us, leaving them with the communes of a bigger house, a bigger kitchen really feels. Honestly, it's very important to us as a family because there are endless dishes and dirty clothes and you know, I have to stay on top of those things, I think having double sinks is perfect, no, no, in this part of the house also.

The space is quite large and I think that's because you have this wonderful vaulted ceiling here, which is slowly added, yes, and that was something that we had to decide, as you will see later, we have the girls, they each have their own sleeping space over their own lofts and initially we thought we were weakened, we also need our own loft and initially we had planned it but it will often be here but as we started to investigate it more in 3D diagrams I really felt that by closing it a bit, we would feel like yeah, I made it feel a little bit smaller, but now when you walk in, you can see, I mean, you're a pretty tall guy and it still feels like it's good. amount of space, so not including a sleeping loft for the two of them, where do they sleep?

That's the number one question we get from family and friends, so initially we were going to have a bedroom upstairs, but we decided to do the sofa bed. which is totally romantic but it's incredibly comfortable, actually yes, I've completely gotten used to it and it's a good size and we love it. I am so surprised by how romantic, how cozy it is and how private it feels even though we have the perfect girls lofts. Going up those stairs, I mean, life with little kids is never very private, they want to anyway, yeah, wherever you are, but for us it doesn't, it feels like our space when the girls are in bed, they lie down as early enough and we have our own space downstairs. here and we love it and another big advantage of doing it that way is that now you definitely have this phenomenal sized family sofa so this was another one on the list that we absolutely wanted to have as a family we wanted a sofa big enough to have a good size bed for us, but we also wanted the couch to work as you know, a big couch was found for all of our families before we all fit in here and exactly for us to read books here, you know, the girls do their little doodles and Joel and I'm here with them so it feels like a good space almost like a conventional living space that you would have in a normal house and I talked to myself about the storage here yeah so there were a lot of options for us having the house. built and what kind of storage options we wanted, there were a few that were pretty obvious to us, the staircase is the perfect setting, I mean, you wake up in the space otherwise, but we weren't quite sure how the situations would actually work. of life until we were completely into it, so we thought a lot about that we've been adding later, for example, these closets here and there, the actors are this is my side, the clothing storage and we each have our own size , yes, Emma signs, here we have Here we have things for the children, we have toys and games, everything for them, everything works perfectly and they love it.

We also have these cabinets, shelves, we have baskets for your paints and your clays. and everything and they can just go up and grab a basket and put it on the table and they leave and obviously it works perfectly and then I realize you have a hook here sticking out of the ceiling, what does that do? We do this. One of the girls' favorite things about this space is that we actually have a swing thathook up for girls, the seat is wide enough for them both to sit and read books and they can actually reach a considerable height this way.

That was one of the things I remember seeing in a small house years ago, not the exact planting that we have, but I remember seeing how fun it looked for the kids and something a little bit fun for them and then there's the bathroom, so here we have the sliding door and it obviously gives us a lot of privacy it just slides very easily and then it looks like you've managed to fit it in a large size bathroom yeah so we were able to design a space that was perfect not only for us as a couple but also for our daughters so the large washer dryer is totally essential for a family of four, we are constantly doing laundry and the other thing was a large bathtub which was totally necessary.

Do children bathe almost every night? And for us it was just the two of us, we may not have needed it but I thought it was pretty essential for the kids to have a full size bathtub and it fits perfectly in here, it doesn't even feel like it's on the floor or anything. Yes, I think another good thing about this bathroom is the amount of storage space, so we have a sink and a good sized vanity where we can store all the toothbrushes. We have all this organization on the side where Joel is and obviously a good place to hang the towels and I say you have the composting toilet here, yes we are partially off the grid and partially on the grid, but we are not in any septic field or anything like that, so we have the composting toilet because it makes things so convenient with where we are.

I don't have to design a septic field or anything, which is very expensive of course, and much more permanent, and this has worked very well for us, we hadn't even heard of it before designing the little house I had built. and we love it, it's been great,

and upstairs we have the kids' rooms, which is actually my favorite part of the house, come on, let's go see it, so obviously one of my favorite spaces is the lofts, but this little one Reading area. I love how the kids can just run up there, grab a book, and then go up to their loft or back to the couch area.

Yeah, there may be a little bit about your bookworms, that's something we didn't really do. The sacrifice in a small house is that we wanted to keep all of their books, so we had to put some on the stairs, some in this little storage and then, right, there you made me sacrifice my books, which I love about what you have. done here and it creates this really special little area where you know you're about to enter the children's space exactly yes, so we were trying to figure out if we get hanging storage, which was one of the things that we're kind of. of lack or we do that as soon as you go up the stairs you enter the children oh yes, yes, and we can take a look at the rooms upstairs, of course you can go up, thank you, this is absolutely I think this is one of the spaces coziest in the whole house and, in fact, although the ceilings are lower, it is a place where we spend a lot of time, so the girls, Joel and I always take turns reading books. here and we wanted Isla to have a really big mattress and a big bed so we could all fit in here together, that's really nice, there's a lot of storage in here too, yeah there's tons of storage, we actually have four wicker baskets so two of them are for toy storage and then two of them are for clothes so the only type of hanging storage we have is the little hook that you see when you walk up the stairs and then the rest just fold up so the girls don't No No They need a lot of clothes, they just need the basic clothes that they wear, you know, during the week, so they have them in two baskets right there and then we have room for IVs on the other side.

Can we take a look? Of course, this is so sweet that I can't believe they finally managed to get a crib in here, so one of the biggest things was that our little list is still in a crib and will probably be in a crib for another year. Since we ended up having to put a crib in the space, I think we'll turn it into a swing door because right now we're lifting it up and swooping it into the space, but for now she thinks it's She loves Birk hoses and it's great that you managed to put some doors in here too yeah so this was kind of a nursery centerpiece that we wanted because our little one is still waking up. at night and we didn't want that sound to reach our oldest daughter, who sleeps pretty soundly, so we made a folding door here, which is super easy, it swings open and open and the sound is fantastic to say the least.

I think it went surprisingly quickly, in fact we thought it would take a little longer, but it was the first night in the kids' room.
