When I was a kid, one of my favorite places in the whole world was my grandmother's house, she lived south of Paris, Maine, about 2,000 people lived there, it was totally rural and there were lots of woods everywhere. We arrived at my grandmother's big farm and immediately went into the forest behind our property because it was like a vast expanse of wilderness, but as soon as it got dark at night, we all rushed back inside because there were huge animals living in it. the nature of Maine. and you just didn't want to be there after dark and at night I would look at this dark forest from the safety of my room and I would always be so scared that a pair of eyes would look back.

Well, let's get into today's story in 2005, Eric Martin was working at a paper mill in Maine and he had been working at this paper mill for 20 years and he was reaching out to grab something off a shelf when he leaned back. and in fact several discs had slipped and that ultimately meant that he couldn't work anymore, he was going to be disabled and suddenly out of work, his wife shelly martin wasn't working at the time, but when he couldn't work, she needed get a job and so shelly, who hadn't worked in a long time, was able, through some connections, to get a job in her hometown in Maine it was called Palmyra Palmyra was a very small rural community.

I mean, we're talking about about 1,200 people who lived there. They also had a 17 year old daughter named Chelsea who wasn't eager to go, but it was the only place they could afford and so I had to leave luckily because Palmyra was such a cheap place to live relative to where they had been living. that for less money they ended up purchasing a larger property than they had ever lived in before: it's this beautiful country house that was on a lot of land, but it was incredibly isolated, you had to go down this bumpy driveway to get there.

You get to their long driveway and then once you were on the property you looked out and it was just a complete 360 ​​degrees, a very dense forest that practically no one was there, there were no nature trails, it was just a dark forest and dense everywhere you looked, so even though no one is all that happy about it, they end up moving to this farm and as they un

their truck, Eric grabs one of his many rifles that he owned. Eric came from a long line of hunters who gave him he loved hunting, it was his favorite activity and he had a lot of guns that he kept and as he was carrying the rifle to the house, Shelley says oh no, we're not staying. guns in the house you have a barn are you going to put your guns in there this had always been a point of contention for them in their marriage shelley just didn't feel safe having guns in the house, especially having kids there and So in the end, Eric agree, okay, I'm not putting my guns in the house, I'm putting them in the barn, so he went to the barn and he and his son Sean, who he had gone out to help, built this gun box. for all their rifles was very sturdy, they put it in the barn and then they locked it and then they locked the barn so they were totally safe in the barn, but they were definitely not easily accessible during that first year, Shelley and Eric developed this ritual. where at the end of the day they would go out on the porch of their farm and look at the front yard and drink coffee, it was something they both looked forward to and practically every night they did this and almost exactly one year after moving in, it was early 2006.

Shelley and Eric are sitting on the front porch enjoying their coffee, they are chatting and Shelley thinks she sees something in the woods. To get an idea of ​​what they were seeing, right in front of their porch was a gravel drive where they parked their cars about 20 yards from their house, to the left is their barn and beyond the barn basically straight from the porch there is this huge open field where there are no trees or anything, it was like an open grazing area and then way beyond the field was the beginning of this tree line of this really dense forest, so we're talking at least a few hundred meters away where she sees these lights and she described it as a pulsing light, it didn't look like a car or any kind of vehicle, not to mention there was no road right in front of her porch, it was just a dense forest where there was absolutely no no one who should have been.

There, Eric immediately, when he sees the lights, thinks that there is a poacher on his property, someone illegally hunting on his property, so he calls Sean, his son, who did not live with them but stayed the night that night. evening. He asks her to come out and say. Hey, do you think there's a poacher down there at the edge of our tree line and Sean says, I don't know, maybe Eric decides he wants to go tell this person to leave his property and so he asked Sean to will accompany? They would just get to the edge of the property and yell, hey, this is private property, you need to leave as they walk across the field and get closer to the tree line, the lights, those pulsing lights start to fade and disappear.

They head back into the woods and get to the tree line and can't see any lights, although at this point, standing at the edge of the woods, Eric and Sean are pretty sure this poacher is gone, they decide just to be safe let's walk. a little bit towards the forest even if it's totally dark we're not going to get lost we're going to walk a little bit towards the forest and we'll keep shouting this is private property so they really leave and like that they start walking and it's a very dense forest, with a lot of low branches, no It's an easy place to walk, there are no walking trails or anything like that, and they walk, you know, 10 to 15 meters into the forest and then they hear what sounds like someone. walking parallel to them, maybe 15 meters away from them on their left and they both stopped and looked, they didn't want to take the risk that they were being stalked by a predator and then they thought, you know, the lights went out.

at the farm and it was the first good day of spring, I mean it was a very dark and dreary winter. Winters in Maine tend to be like this and that weekend Nathan and Chelsea decide to go for a walk in the woods, so they grab the two family dogs and start walking across that big field in front of the house towards the woods, the same area where Sean and Eric had been looking for those lights and then she heard what sounded like an animal that was near them, so at first Chelsea has the dogs on a leash, but they get to the woods and she lets them go to run and they leave. crazy because they've also been cooped up due to winter, the two dogs instantly take off running about 100 yards and then stop dead right outside this big mound that looks like a mound of dirt, but they get closer. and you can tell it's actually more like a den, there are these huge pieces of wood that have been propped up like a shed type structure with moss, dirt and grass placed all over the outside, I mean it looks like a very intentional structure. made a mound and there is a circular hole that has been created right in front and the dogs have stopped right outside and they are sticking their heads and sniffing in this hole and Nathan and Chelsea are looking at this thinking who did this is this like a thing from a hunter, it's something a hunter could do.

Would an animal do this? It seems too big for any animal to do this, but it was definitely done on purpose, whatever it is, so Nathan just looks down at this den, but it is. completely dark and he thinks he hears growling coming from inside the den and then, without hesitation, he says, we have to go, I don't know what lives there, we have to go, so they take the dogs, they put leashes on them again and two of them they get out of the woods as fast as they can when nathan and chelsea got back to the house they told eric and shelly and actually sean was there too and they said hey we found this stand of some kind in the middle of the woods it basically comes straight out of your porch and that's when Eric and Sean said well, about a month ago, we were in that same area and we could have sworn we heard an animal stalking us.

A couple of months passed and Eric and Shelly were sitting down. on their porch having their coffee ritual and there was a low fog hanging over the entire field and as they sat there they were commenting on how creepy it was and what started out as sort of a friendly discussion about The General Chill took a turn when they found themselves Notice that they couldn't hear any wild animals, no crickets, no animals, nothing and usually at night, because they were here all the time, it was full of life, so Shelley had this high powered flashlight that she always went out with. and starts scanning the property not knowing what he's looking for but it seemed really strange that they couldn't hear the wildlife but after scanning the entire field he doesn't see anything so he turns off his flashlight and starts talking to Eric about what Whatever they usually talked over coffee at night.

A few minutes and Eric gets up and he says he can't come in and he tries to grab her to push her into the house and she's like fighting him and suddenly Shelley stops and says, Did you hear that? and Eric.

She immediately knew that whatever it was was the reason she had that sudden feeling of being in danger. Eric turns around and can't see anything because it's too dark. Shelley grabs her flashlight and starts scanning the tree line and she gets to the field and she gets about halfway across the field right in front of them and she stops because right in the middle of the field there are three wolf-like

She tells Eric what those are and Eric, who is an experienced hunter, he has no idea what they are. I think they're bears. They could be

. We have to get in and then Shelley's just holding the light up and they start charging right at her so fast that she couldn't keep the light on them. They were already halfway across the field. They come in. They close the door and lock it and without saying a word the two make their rounds throughout the lower floor they block all the windows they close all the blinds they make sure everything is closed there was something different about these five creatures the way they They started running towards them it felt like they were aiming at Eric and Shelly and so even after the house was secured, they didn't feel safe and that's why they were standing in the middle of their cabin and Eric was saying my guns are in the barn, I can't, we have no protection and Shelly says whatever you do, don't go out. there we don't know what these are it could be a bear it could be a wolf we don't know don't go out there shelly goes up the stairs turns off all the lights makes sure all the windows are closed and then goes to Chelsea's room, her daughter and She wakes her up and says, "Hey, come here, you need to look at this," and they go to the window and they like to stick their heads out the window because they don't want it to be wide open.

They pick it up and they look out because they don't want the creatures to see them, but they're like sticking their heads out the window and she says look and standing on the gravel are these five creatures that are standing in a row looking right into the house it was like If they were waiting for them to come out the front door, they were just patiently standing there looking at the house, it didn't seem like normal animal behavior at all and as she watched, one of the animals looks at Shelly in the window and the creature stands on its back. two legs, stands on its hind legs and looks at it and Shelly gasps and falls because the creature is like eight feet tall and then Shelley is on the ground looking at Chelsea and she can't believe what she just saw, it's like her brain couldn't process that this creature had even seen her, they barely had their head in the window, but she was standing on her hind legs, she was so big, what are they doing sitting in a row? those who are outside the house waiting for us what's going on here and then shelley tells chelseaget into your bed don't go to your windows don't leave this room and that's when shelley also remembers that she hasn't heard her two dogs and is worried that they might be outside, so she starts quietly walking around the top floor looking for her dog, he calls his two dogs and they don't come out, he enters the master bedroom and finds his two dogs hiding in the corner of the room, one next to the other, as if they were scared. whatever was outside, meanwhile Eric was walking down the stairs thinking that he needed to go to the barn and that he needed to get his weapons to protect the family, but he knew that between his own disability he could barely walk very fast and would have to unlock the door. barn and then you would have to lower the gun box to unlock it while he is exposed to these animals that are out there, so the best thing he can come up with is that maybe he could run out, get in his truck and back away. to the front door and then he could get his wife and his daughter to come out and get in the car and they could leave, so he just walks up to the window and draws the blinds to look out and those five creatures are gone.

There they are sitting on the gravel driveway right in front of the house. He doesn't know where they are, but they're not in front of the house, so he closes the blinds and says, well, I don't know where they are. Is it too dangerous to go out? He starts walking somewhere and looks back and sees them in the field where they first saw the five of them. You can see all five. They're still facing the house, but he can see them. because the moon has now risen and he has lighting in the field and you can see the five of them and he says okay, maybe if I just keep an eye on them I can open the door and run out, start the car again without them seeing me.

And then, without telling Shelley, he opens the door and goes to the front porch and sees them in the field. He has a good line of sight on them. As quietly as he can, he goes down the stairs and heads towards his truck which is about 10 meters away and as he gets closer and closer to his truck he has his eye on the creatures that are in the field, they have not moved, apparently they haven't seen him, he gets to the driver's side of his truck, he has his keys out and he's fumbling to press the unlock button and then the motion sensor light comes on and he's so nervous being there when the light turns on, he drops his keys because he's so scared and the first thing he does is look out at the field and sees that one of the five creatures is now standing on its hind legs looking directly at him before even bending down to grab his keys, the He sees everyone running towards him, he bends down and grabs his keys.

He runs back to the house as fast as he can and goes inside and slams it shut when he can hear them crossing the gravel right in front of the house and he hears them tie up the porch and start running around the wraparound porch, he too He's scared even to look out the window, so he ducks out of sight. Shelley, who is upstairs, can hear everything that's going on and she yells at Eric what's going on and he stays up there, stay up there, Shelly Eric Chelsea, everyone is frozen waiting knowing that. these creatures are right on the other side walking on your wraparound porch and after a while you hear the footsteps of these creatures coming off the porch and back onto the gravel area and at some point you poke your head out and look and all five of them are sitting there in front of the house waiting for them to come out of the house, then he runs up the stairs to where Shelley and Chelsea are and they are so scared that they decide they have to call the police, at least the police.

He will arrive and his vehicle might scare these creatures away, but over the phone, Shelly tells him that what is really scaring them is something on his property, in fact, it is five creatures running outside his property and immediately the police officer who is responding. To this he says, "Okay, are you sure it's not a moose? Are you sure it's not a bear?" and finally she says, "No, can you come here?" I'm sure everything will be fine and in the end that's how the call ends. They are alone, the family felt helpless and Eric especially felt very frustrated because he can't protect the family from him, he doesn't have a weapon that he can do it with.

Upon reaching their vehicle they were simply trapped and decided that the only thing we can do is barricade ourselves inside the house and for the next 30 minutes they put heavy furniture in front of all the doors and windows blocking everything. the best they could they got kitchen knives and they got an ax that they had inside to chop some firewood while they go up the stairs they lock themselves in the master bedroom with their guns and their dogs and they get on the bed and they just decide everything. What we can do is wait until the sun rises during the time they were barricading their house, they would look from time to time and see the five creatures sitting on that gravel area right in front of their house waiting for them when they finally went up the stairs and They barricaded themselves in that room.

They immediately heard the creatures move away from the gravel and heard a couple of them at least walk up to the porch and start walking around the porch and it's totally silent besides the sounds of these creatures and they were clearly communicating with each other, they were crashing against the walls and then howling at each other, there was clear communication where they were trying to coordinate some kind of attack on the family, now, the way the house was set up was that there was a roof on the second floor and then the first floor was a little wider than the second floor and had its own kind of separate roof and after a while the creatures stopped walking on the porch, they came off the porch and there was just silence and then they heard them.

Jump to the first roof. The scary thing about this is that if you walked around the roof, you could look out the second floor windows, so they were there and periodically looked out the window. There were windows on both sides. from the room they were in, but there was a thin curtain between them and the window, so every now and then these creatures would pass by their windows and stop, they would put their paws on the window and look in, but there was a very thin sheet between them and the glass so they couldn't see the creature and the creature couldn't see them all night they were listening to these creatures running and sometimes they heard very loud scratching like They had discovered something and they were trying to make their way into the house, but after a whole night at this, they never broke the glass.

They never made it into the house when the sun started to rise in the morning, the creatures jumped off the roof and they could hear them running away and for about an hour they didn't hear anything outside of the sunrise and they felt safe again so they left their house. room, they went down the stairs and finally opened it and all over their property were signs of huge creatures that had been on their property huge footprints with huge claws at the end they found clumps of hair that had gotten stuck in the fence posts and even more scary as they found all these spots in the house in particular on the second floor when they were walking on that roof where there were clear marks that they had tried to dig into the house there were these deeply embedded scratch marks on the side of the house the door The entrance had been scraped, I mean, it was very clear that whatever these creatures were, they were trying to get into the house but they hadn't been successful.

This experience was so traumatic for the family that they sold the house and moved very quickly after that and haven't experienced anything like it since they left, so what do they do?
