Exhaust Cut Outs Give Your Vehicle a Split Personality

Jun 03, 2021
Greetings viewers, we're on the car guy, here again with another Fairmont project video, don't worry, I'm not going to fill the channel with Fairmont videos, but this one has been very requested and it's about my high volume button , which is actually an

exhaust

cutout that I have on my Fairmont now an

exhaust

cutout is a device that you can put on the exhaust before the muffler and all that kind of stuff. Mine is electronic so you can press a button and bypass the muffler and everything and basically have a straight exhaust pipe press the button again it closes and allows the exhaust to pass through the muffler again and be nice again and quiet, so that's what this video is about.

I have run two different types of exhaust cut

outs

on the Fairmont in this video I want to remove the first one that I put on and I'll talk a little bit about why I did that and why change to this new type that I like much better but first let's go over how my exhaust cut. This is all you see when you look inside the car is this button this is the button to cut off the exhaust you push it this way it opens you push it this way it closes it doesn't matter if I'm driving down the road I stop at a traffic light every time I can open this or close it at will.

Now I won't cover the wiring or installation of this switch in this video. I'll cover it in another video, but the wiring is really simple. Really just power and ground and finding a place for this switch. What I will cover in this video is replacing the old exhaust cutout with the new exhaust cutout and why I did that. This is my old exhaust cut, it's a Doug exhaust. Cut down, it was recommended to me by the guy who bent the Fairmont's exhaust. He said they were reliable, worked well for him for years and worked fine until he kissed the ground so this part was sticking out.

I hit the pavement somewhere and made up this way it works and I'll take it apart here for you in a minute. Basically there is a flap that closes and opens and allows the exhaust to pass through or closes it the moment it is folded. It couldn't move freely, so it didn't work well anymore, so I went to the design that I'll show you in the rest of this video. I removed all the screws holding Doug's exhaust cutout and you can take a look inside, it's really simple, there are these spacers on both sides that are the same thickness as this flap.

This flap is the one that moves back and forth, so it can open or close and they are like little bearings that Continue Now. I can activate this real quick to show you how it works and

give

you an idea of what happens when you press the button on the dashboard. There is an electrical connector. It's just a simple electric motor that's on the other side here and it depends. which direction the current flows through it which direction it moves, so it will move this way or this way depending on how the current flows through it.
I'm going to make a wild guess and use this as my base and this is my power and now I'm going in the opposite direction so I need to change this again so I need to make that my land and this my power and you can see it opens up and then you turn and then you shift the other way and this is what happens now, this is limited by the inside of the device, in other words when it comes into contact with these external parts it stops moving and this still works but this is the problem I was running into, you can almost see this.
The little ball bearing that it mounts on has sunk and this one here, well some of these are rusty and don't move very well but my main problem with this guy and this was mainly after it hit the ground. They were fine until then I had to go back in and turn everything straight and get everything working again but while the car was running it was rattling like crazy it was driving me crazy so I just sat there and he would understand this. I can hear what I'm talking about in this clip making that noise right there is what we're getting rid of.
I don't like that point; that's the main reason I switched from this style to the other, but you'll still do it. See, the other style has a much lower profile and doesn't extend under the

vehicle

like this one. This is my new exhaust cutout and it works very differently. As you can see, it has a very different profile than the previous one. I'll see if I can turn a light on there so I can show you how to open the zipper on the inside. Now let's see how this one works when you press the button now that you've seen the comparison between the two. types of exhaust cut

outs

and how they work, let's see how this new one was installed.
I don't want to replace the switch on the dash and all the electronics since it's just a simple electric motor that only gets this 12 volts, here I am. I'm just going to reuse this wiring that goes all the way to... I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it all works out. I think job 1 will actually be removing the old exhaust cutout and starting to install the new one. My new unit is ready for an RP race. performance and I just checked the instructions and then the cutouts are reversible so in relation to exhaust gas flow there is no front or rear so I can mount it any way I want now that I have it unplugged just I'm going to remove it. all of this and well, I'm going to claim to delete it all, but the truth of the matter is that I really need to get the right size keys for that to happen.
Well, that works best by having the right size and one of the right size wrenches. You know, the nice thing about being in this part of construction is that yes, I'm doing all these annoying little things, but it seems easy compared to completely fabricating or remaking something, although I'll have to invent something in this crisis of mine. Place this tube right here. I had an idea because I don't want to just shoot it directly under the body of the car, I want to point it towards the ground, like it looks like it's missing a fastener. Well look, one of these has already come loose, well, well, I have new fasteners and it's off, just the old gasket seems to stay intact, so I'll leave it, this is what comes in the box I have.
I have some new fasteners as you can see some wires that can go to the engine assembly then there is the switch assembly which looks extremely similar to the one I already have mounted on the dash and a fuse what I have on the dash already has a fuse here, it looks like the way they are set up is for just one so you can plug it in here, however there are two so if you had dual exhaust you could use the same switch for both cutouts. I think that's how it's set up. but I'm only using one and in fact I'll probably just use this one and I'll splice this connector together so I can connect these two things under the car and now we also have this joint for my opening that I wanted I like the previous unit so basically I want to shoot this into the ground when I turned it.
I have to be a little more creative, so this is what I have. I do not need anything. I couldn't find a swivel that I could just screw into. a three bolt flange like this I just couldn't find one, it's there. I had to get creative, as we often do when we build custom cars, you're probably going to have to do something, so what I'm going to do is 'I'm going to take this, which is basically a blank that can cover this hole, but instead of plugging the hole, what I'm going to do is go into my plasma cutter and cut a hole. here to match this and then weld this turn down on this plate so cut this hole put this here weld it in and that way I'll have a flange but I can screw it here for my turn so what do I think ?
What I'll do is take this to the

vehicle

and simulate it to get an idea of where things are going to be. You can see this guy here, he has a much lower profile than the one here, he walks in like this. come down yeah this could totally be shorter let's just check out the new bolts see how they fit they're fantastic in fact I think I'll definitely be using these new bolts. I want to cut this even in full width, I think it's the best way. To do that is to lay down a line of masking tape, so we're just going to cut it on that line.
Now we cut well. I made a good cut because this fits well and is solid, but I'm going to take. put it on the wire wheel so you can put all this wire up high so it can be soldered there. One more thing I do while I'm here is I'm going to try to bevel this edge, it looks like that's a good thing. to make it so that when the solder goes in it also fills in and forms a really nice strong surface, not that it really matters with this. I could probably spot weld this in there and it would be fine even though it would leak out the outside, so what, but I'm going to try to do a good job because I like to practice my welding whenever possible.
Now I'm going to try to send this on this plate that looks correct, but when I cut this, I'm going to cut inside. this line because I don't want it to go all the way to the jagged edge. I'm really going to make this up here like this. I don't need this to fit inside here. I can, but I don't think it really matters if it is or not, you can't just use a plasma cutter and start flying. I suppose you can, but they don't recommend it, so first I'll drill a pilot hole right in the center, not really. matter where I just need a hole big enough for it to work, plasma cutter, I got a little wide so I was going to be a little bit of filler with the soldering iron, but I think the first order of business is to try to get everything . this downed slag now I'm going to take it with the exhaust, cut it off and then put it in place so I can tack it and I'm actually going to take this over the wire wheel and take that marker off, but tack it in and then take it off again, then do a full beater on the outside, we can say it's well made, we can jump to the wire, if I've learned anything in my short career as a welder it's that the cleaner the metal, you start with the better

your

welds will be and I want the nuts here to know how far I can solder ooh and I can even tilt them a little to the side so it's not facing down.
I can put this anywhere I want. I want maybe a welder to fix it in place. Let's go to the builders to turn the well. Girls. Now mine. I could have welded around the bolt holes on this side. I'm going to turn it over and weld them from the back because there is very little room. that area, so I'm going to do what I can to try to weld around it and I'm going to jump back and forth because this metal is going to warp as I work. I also realized when I was nailing it. There I forgot to turn on the gas, that's why those walls are so ugly.
The gas is on now, although it is much better. I'm just going to fill in the blanks, as is. I'm going to put this here, now choose the right size. The Eric plug is there now. I need to transfer this end here so I can connect these two things taking pretty much the same path, although this can go down here like this and connect both cables right there. I'm going to take this giant piece of Shrink Tubing and put it over all of this. Now I found out that my crimpers are failing. I fixed it by doing that.
Some of you better ask Eric why not solder well. The sardine may work, but I have wired up this entire car and used these connectors and I'm not saying they worked one hundred percent of the time because they didn't, but it's faster and if you think about it, how many connections do manufacturers solder? Not a lot of these crimp connections, which is essentially cold soldering that said because I'm doing it this way, probably the best answer to

give

you a fantastic answer and that's one of the main reasons because with the rise of shrink connectors it's there it's made so that it doesn't seal completely we're going to have to make some duct tape a little zip tie just to secure that down let's see if we can hear it move first it looks like you've been working this will be closed that's just driving normally this is open yes so it's better to be silent again which one do I like the race ready one I have now better?
I like that one better than Dougs. Now I got the Dougs on the recommendation of my escape guy who said it's the fastest opening and I don't like it. I doubt it, but I honestly didn't notice any difference between the amount of time it took for the Dougs to open and close and the race ready to open and close. I guess it's just a personal preference, but for me the Dougs hug each other too much. I hit the ground more than once and as a result it ruined it for the Dougs too and I'll blame myself for hitting the ground with it, it rattled and that really bothered me a lot that thing just sit there and idle it just bothered me but the race ready one hasn't, however I read in that style that the race ready one has that type of throttle body plate up there that sometimes the bolts can come out and I didn't read that specifically about the race ready version but that style of exhaust cutout and when that happens that plate comes off and then you don't have exhaust cutouts so that's why I avoided it to begin with. but I've been driving with this race-ready version for all ofsummer without any problems, but know this, no matter which style you choose, they will leak, so if you have an exhaust cut, I have noticed it on both.
Different styles filter through, even this race ready version. Now I'm fine with it, it doesn't make any noise, it doesn't really make much noise and sometimes when I really turn the engine on hard it opens up a little bit, but when you press a little the button closes again and calms down so I'm used to it I like this style I guess it depends on what

your

preference is this is not sponsored these are all my opinions and even if it were I would still give you my opinions but I will put links in the description to both dugs in the race-ready versions.
Any other information that might be helpful to you when it comes to this, like I said I'll cover the wiring and everything in a future video, it's not difficult, it's just power. and ground and find a place to put the switch, that's it, it's a pretty easy setup, but like I said, we'll cover this later, additional information in the description if you have car questions that aren't covered in this video. asked the head to go on air in the car boy communication, also linked in a description, don't forget to like, comment, subscribe, do all those things that help you make a living and also ring the bell, you want the notifications, you know how to know when I am. posting new videos stay safe have fun stay dirty thank you very much for your time and for watching See you next time greetings video greetings videos greetings video I did it again
