Erica's Easy Thread Catcher // SEWING TUTORIAL!!

Jun 05, 2021
Hey guys, welcome back to my channel, I'm Erica from Confessions of a Homeschooler and I've been getting a lot of requests to make a

tutorial

on yarn picking for you, so that's what we're doing today. I have received written instructions for this. project on my blog for years, but I've had a lot of requests for a video and I thought it would be fun and

easy

to put together, so this project is definitely beginner friendly, you can do it in under an hour, it's great. Easy and doesn't require a lot of supplies, let's go ahead and take a look at everything we need to do this project.

The supplies for this project are super simple. You will need a workable fleece and I only have a couple different sizes here. You're going to need some fabric for the strap, some fabric for the pin cushion, some outer fabric, some lining. Fabric and then you can use rice or I like to use these walnut shells because they don't dull the needles as much, um, but You can use anything you want to fill your pin cushion and then of course some regular

sewing

supplies. I've got my rotary cutter, my ruler and then you're also going to need some kind of stabilizer for the Ed in your bag and this is just something.

The cotton straps just help give it a little more shape around the outside so let's go ahead and get started right so let's go ahead and start by preparing our fusible fleece and you can skip this step if I'm using a heavier duty fabric . My fabric is super light and thin, so I just want to give it a little more structure, so what we're going to do is take our fusible batting here. and one side is bumpy and the other side is smooth, the bumpy side is the side that has the adhesive on it, so you'll want to take that and just place it right side down on one of the edges of your strap and with a /4 inch around the outside edges here and we're going to press that down, we're going to do the same thing with the fusible fleece for the pincushion and then we're going to do the same thing so let's place these guys here and then we're going to do same thing with the fabric and on this one I just have the bumpy side up and I'm just going to lay my fabric on top and then you're just going to follow the instructions that come on your fusible fleece to adhere it to your fabric and usually that's just a hot iron and you just press it and leave it for about 10 seconds, move it for 10 seconds and move it many times.

Say no, um steam, so just follow the instructions that come on your fusible batting and just to be clear, you're going to place the B, the fusible fleece, on the wrong side of the fabric. I'm going to go ahead and do that and I. We'll meet you right here, so here are all my pieces and I just put my workable fleece on the back of them so they're ready to go. I'm just going to push the outside of the bag out of the way. For now we're going to work with our strap and our pillow, so the first thing we're going to do is take our strap fabric and we're just going to fold it right sides over so we're just going to sew. right on this side, on this side and then slightly inward at the corners here, leave about a 1 inch gap so we can turn this piece right side out.
erica s easy thread catcher sewing tutorial
I'm going to go ahead and do that and we'll meet back here, okay? here we are and now we're going to turn this right side over just be careful your hole isn't very big on this one so take your time and I like to use one of these super useful Hera markers these are by Clover I'm going to link it below and then I'm going to use it to push my seams and get my corners out okay so once this piece is nice and straightened I'm going to take it to the ironing board and just press it and then just for decorative purposes actually , I'm going to go over a stitch on both sides, um, don't worry about these ends because they're going to cover up when we put it on our bag and our pillow, so just up and down the sides, you can skip this step completely if want.
I just think it makes it look a little more finished. Okay, this piece is finished. I don't know if you can see it because I. I only used white

thread

, but I only did a 1/4 inch top stitch just to give it a little bit of finish. Now we're going to take our pillow and we're going to fold it in half, right sides together. and just mark that and then we're going to open it again and we're going to center this halfway between my mark that was right here and this edge here and we're just going to line up one of the edges I'm lining up the open edge um with the top. of the pillow here, okay and then we're going to fold this over so it's out of the way and now would be a good time to take out your handy pins and just pin it in place like that, this bottom edge is out of the way, um , but it won't move over you and then we're going to take this and fold it in half like it was before and We're just going to run a stitch all the way to the end of this edge, make sure you get your little handle in there and then down a little bit, so , again give yourself an opening of about 1 and a half inches here, start again up here. and we go up this edge and then we're going to turn this whole thing over okay so here we are and now we're going to turn this pillow over and again just be careful and take your time and then again.
I'm just going to take my little tool here, just push out my corners, there we go, okay, now I'm going to take this to my ironing board and I'm just going to press these edges open an inch, they should be more or less natural. fold that way too, but that will give it a nice finished look when we go to sew it, so I just pressed this opening, we're not going to sew it yet, so leave it. Next we're going to go ahead and grab the outside of our bag and the lining piece and we're going to layer them, so how we're going to do this is place the lining right side up and then we're going to place the stand of the pincushion above that, about 3 inches in 3 inches from this edge here, so this doesn't have to be precise, you basically just want it so your pillow isn't in the way of this seam, right? here and I'm going to go ahead and just put a pin right there so that our pocket doesn't move on us, so we're going to take the lining or the outside of our bag, we're going to place that.
Right side down on top of all that and your lining is going to be longer than the outside of your bag, so don't worry about that, that's right, we're going to take this to the machine and just run it a quarter of an inch. Sew this whole edge together, just make sure you secure the lining, your little strap here and the outside of your bag, okay, here we are, it should look like this and I just took this to the ironing board. and I just pressed this open real quick and I just pressed it towards the lining, we're just going to turn this right side down and we're just going to make sure that your pin cushion is facing that direction, we're going to take our cotton ribbon correctly. here and just slide it right under that seam, just take a pin and we'll pin it in place and make sure your pins are in from your Edge here, we're going to sew right here so I just want it to stay in place but so that it doesn't go over the pins and I'll probably just put one here in the middle, okay, and then we'll take all of this and fold it in half like this.
Okay, and just straighten out that pocket or pillow, why do I keep calling it a pocket that we don't know about? Okay, and then you're just going to line up your edges here and this is a great place to use these Wonder clips and just pin everything into place, just make sure all the edges are nice and lined up and then what we're going to do is take this to the

sewing

machine and we're going to sew this entire side along the top. Edge making sure your straps continue, make sure your pillow is out of the way.
Mine is here, so I'm good up to here, leave about, uh, I don't know what those two or almost 3 are. in the opening here at the bottom and then sew this little section here and then this is what we're going to do. use to turn it around so make sure you leave a nice opening for yourself right here okay so here Come on I went ahead and removed the pins that were holding the straps in place and then the next thing we want to do is box our bottoms and this is super

easy

. We're going to do the same thing on all four corners, so I'm going to go ahead and get to the bottom of my lining and since this is a small piece I have my finger here and my thumb here and I'm just going to put them together so it looks like this . and then I'm going to straighten everything out here, okay, so you want it to look like a kind of pointy edge here and when you fold it open it looks like a diamond.
I'm just trying to make sure it's nice and straight and then we're going to take our ruler here and I'm going to place the 90° angle there we're going to a 90° angle on the edge of my fabric and I'm going to go about 1 and A2 in down. , so here's my 1 and 1/2 inch marker and this line is right on my seam here and I'm just going to draw a line there and put a pin there just to hold it in place, okay? and then we're going to do the same thing on this other corner and whatever size you choose on one corner do it on all four corners of the outside and the lining, okay, I'm just going to put a pin in there and you can move them out of the way now we're going to do the same with the lining and this one is a little bit more difficult because you have this hole here but essentially you're doing exactly the same thing so just push put your finger here in this hole and make sure it's nice and straight and throw a pin in there and then do the same thing on the other corner, okay, so we're going to stitch along this line and then we're going to cut it about a half inch from our stitch line and we're going to do that on all four corners, okay, so Our Pro should look like this, now that we have the bottoms of our boxes, let's go.
Go ahead and turn around our entire project now before doing that. I think it's easier, in fact, we don't want this to slide down or get twisted, which can happen when we start changing things from the inside out, so I'm actually going to take a pin and I'm going to go in here with my pin and I'll just meet the marker halfway and go ahead and just pin it in place, it doesn't have to be perfect, it'll just hold it in place. so that when we turn to the right side this doesn't move on us, so we're going to go ahead and grab the other end there and turn carefully, okay, it should look something like this, just sit it there, make sure your strap is not twisted or anything, hopefully that pin will hold it in place and then it's also sewn here in this seam and you can take out your square pants here, okay, we're almost done, the next step is to take care of this. to our sewing machine and simply close our lining hole.
Now I like to go to my iron and just press this in 1/4 inch around the edge here and sometimes I even press it with my fingers, you can put some pins in. there and I'm just going to run a stitch along this edge to close this opening, okay, I've already closed my opening, so we're good, just make sure we have everything closed tightly and then let's go. to get our liner in and the liner will actually show a little bit here, so I just grab that strap over there and use it as my guide and then you should also have your PIN right here, like holding it in place as well, okay, and once everything is nice and tucked in, I'm going to take this over to my sewing machine and I'm actually going to run a top stitch right along the edge, not only does it help give it a more finished look, but it also it helps keep this strap in place and then they can pull the pin out.
Okay guys, we're almost done. Your project should look like this. They can save everything inside and then the next thing we do. What we're going to do is we're just going to fill our little pillow here with our walnut shavings or you can use rice or whatever and then we're just going to fold those edges in and we're just going to top stitch all the way to the end. around just to give it a finished look and obviously close this opening and let's see if I can do this without spilling nutshells everywhere, so I'm going to go ahead and leave it this full, that way I can have enough room for them to move and I can go around all the edges of this like I said, we're going to sew a top stitch around the edges to close this opening and finish it off and that's it. with our project, very good guys, and here you have it, we are done, we have our beads sealed here and yes, ready to use, ready for the scraps, ready to sew whatever you want to do, a super easy and fun project, I hope you Yeah. guys enjoyed this
