don t let distance disrupt your teaching
Our first goal is to learn some best practices. For this new environment there are a lot of do's and don'ts available online so I wanted to share a couple of simple ideas for you to consider and I have organized them into the four C's for

distance

learning so I will share them. with you my screen so let's take a look at what those four C's are number one be clear in your communication so what exactly does that mean? Well, let's take a look. Being clear in your communication means that whatever you send home to your students, it is important to keep your instruction simple and direct, less is more and remember that your students probably won't have a music expert or an experienced teacher. at home and younger students may have to rely on adults or older siblings to help them, so give students just a few assignments so they can feel successful and probably even hungry to learn more instead of being exhausted by the workload.
Let's look at our second C: expanding your classroom experiences. What that means is creating tasks that are an extension of what students do. If you're already familiar with what you were working on right before the closures, what would make students feel at home in that routine, it may not be the time to start new content on top of a completely new format and delivery that might be really frustrating for everyone involved, so we want to have as few variables as possible. Our third C is to consider accessibility. It will have a number of different things that students will have to consider.
Some of your students may not have access to technology in their homes. and some students may have five family members trying to use a device at home, so there are a number of factors that will make it difficult for students to successfully engage in e-learning and that's okay, it's time to get creative, so Let's dive into the printable options. immersing yourself in found sounds activities and taking advantage of what students say they like and say they have access to their time away from you will not be without musical experiences, we just have to think outside the box right now and our fourth C that We want What we need to keep in mind as we prepare for distance learning is to connect with your children, which is very difficult to do when we are not with them face to face, but look for ways to maintain that connection with them, whether it is recording videos. of yourself to accompany the content, whether by sending a note to students, ask them how they are doing, remember that this is about educating the whole child.
I really need to benefit from seeing her smiling face right now. I hope you use these four Cs: Clear Considerations about Communication Classroom Experiences for Student Needs and Connection to guide your approach to remote teaching as we move forward into the practicalities of how to teach remotely. I want to take a moment to think about pacing, so just like in the classroom, it's important to introduce new skills in an organized and structured way, so if you're new to online teaching tools, we recommend the following during the next few weeks, so let's take a look at what weeks one and two would look like so that in weeks one and two you will allow yourself and your students to get used to what this format is like take note of what works for you observe areas for improvement and adjust everything you need is not going to be perfect from the beginning in weeks three and four consider assigning grade level activities and also avoid assigning too much or giving content-heavy assessments and eventually, as you begin to feel more comfortable With digital teaching, consider more specific assignments and assessments for students and expand that exposure to content so they are ready or even hungry for more.
This is certainly not a complete list, but just some of the highlights that you should focus on as you prepare these materials, and for a reminder of this information, please see the handout for this webinar on quaver music.com. bar the webinar resources and we can share that information as well. with you in the chat and also keep in mind that what works for someone else may not work for you and your students' circumstances, so ultimately you need to do what is best for you, so let's take a look. Take a look at some of the questions we have.
They must use Google Class with slides to teach the lesson, how can I better integrate qui veut with the classroom and the slides? One suggestion I have that I'll get into a little bit later is QR codes, so now we've created QR codes. Go from seven days to an entire month, you can attach it to Google Slides or even upload it to Google Classroom so students can do those specific activities. I have also heard of several teachers uploading projects in PDF. books as well as worksheet PDFs in Google classroom and that has worked very well. Very clear instructions for students on how to log in.
I think if you give students that information so they have it at their fingertips, that can guide them. To enter Quavered directly, we also have whether the QR codes for mobile access to the different activity pages on the website will remain active or expire. We just answered that aspirational question after seven days, but we just extended it. then it will last all month, so any QR code that has been created in the last few weeks will be valid until March 31st. Any QR code starting April 1 will be valid until the end of April and Michelle Nash asked.
I have a student record so I can see what it looks like for students and then also make handouts and what it looks like for their account. We'll talk about that in our next segment, so I'll do a little bit. Just a little note to remember to do that, but yes, I highly suggest creating a student account so you can see what your students have access to and John Jillian just asked if there is a way to add a shipping option to the account . end of a lesson that isn't a quiz, so the submit option will only be available on specific things like a quiz or a creative or something that students are actually working on on a particular screen;
It's not currently an option available for the entirety of the task, but we'll talk to our developers and see what we can potentially do in the future, so thank you all for those questions, it was really great, so now we'll head into the actual delivery of Quaver content. We've got those particular guidelines in mind, now let's get to the good stuff, so I'm going to look at several ways you can use Cleaver resources to reach your students while teaching and learning from home, so remember you can revisit this . recording at any time to follow me and we've also planned additional webinars in the distance learning series, so we'll be happy to dive into anything you need, as well as the three ways we'll look at distributing assignments to your student accounts. is number one, we will look at the master class tasks, so let's take a very quick look at our three master class tasks in total, we will also look at the student count and last but not least, we will talk about school and the district. -extensive integrations, so let's talk about those masterclass tasks first, so earlier I walked you through those two URLs, the first one was home 2020 and the next one was care 2020, these particular websites are absolutely packed with everything you need, whether you are a current eighth note user or you are new to eighth note at that quaver music.com slash home 2020 if you are a new user, you can register to preview get the information you need if you are already a teacher of eighth note We've set up a class code that is attached to a Quaver class and what that will do is allow you to create a unique student account that can be attached to that and the students will have all that information.
I really recommend using the masterclasses if you need a little time to create your own lessons, it is there to help you as you make those adjustments on your own, so know that you will have access to the ones within your reach, same for the SEL resources of a tremor if You haven't looked at Quaver's social-emotional learning resources. I really recommend checking them out because, especially since students are going through this very difficult and emotional challenge that we're facing right now, it could be a great support for them, especially as a foundation. for your academic learning, know that we are all there and we will be pushing additional content in the coming weeks and if you have any questions, the Quaver PD video training courses are also there to help you, so next we are going to take a look look at our student accounts with custom assignments, so there are a couple of things we need to do first before we move on to number one: we need to create classes and student accounts, then we'll start with creating the assignments, so let's see those who create classes and student accounts, I'm going to head over to my dashboard and share my screen with you so you can see absolutely everything I'm doing, so let's take a look at my screen and I'll start over.
Here in the teacher panel, from the teacher panel, we need to go to the teacher administration, so come here to show your administrator and now we will be in the panel located inside the teacher administration. You will first need to select classes from here. be able to add a new class now, the way you add a newclass will depend on what you want to achieve with your students, if you simply want to give them access to material to consume and use and be exposed to it, it could be beneficial to You can create a single sign-on for all your students or a single sign-on for a certain grade level.
If you're ready to dig a little deeper, add a new class for all the classes you see and add new students. accounts for each of those classes, so know that you have some options there, let's take a look at that screen and the information that you wouldn't share when adding a new class, you would just click add new class and it will fill out the class information. name, make sure you adjust that end date to be a long enough period of time for your students to have access to and what it will do is generate this class code.
This is my example, so this won't work for you, but you will have your own class code generated and that would be what the students will use to attach to your class, so once that happens, we need to set up the students' accounts. students. Now one way to do that is to go to Quaver Musicom. and start with the purple sign up button in the corner, students will be able to create their own student account using that code as the 8th note code to attach to your class now if you are looking to have a little more control over the student name, password and access to email.
I'll give you a couple more suggestions, so let's take a look at what you could do about it if you want. to set up all your student accounts, you can do that by going to students here, next to classes, you can go through them and set them up manually like I said before or we have this bulk student import tool right here, this blue button that you can click on. which will open a new tab and walk you through the instructions to set up a complete spreadsheet with all the class codes, all the usernames and then upload it here now.
I have already reviewed it. that process, but you'll actually see slightly different buttons here on how to do it, it's very quick once it's set up correctly, it's fire, it goes very fast, there's also another option that we'll talk about later and that's integrations. that we can do it, keep that in mind a little later. One thing I wanted to mention is the idea of also setting up your own student account, so one thing you can do here in classes is set up a class that you want your student account to be in now, this will be the student account as a teacher and you would go through the same process that your students would go through by going to the main quaver website clicking register instead of login and you will be able to use that Cleaver code to create your own student code and I recommend doing that because that way you can actually see what the content will look like when your students receive it too, so now that we've gone through the actual setup of the classes, actual setup of our students, it's time for the fun stuff, y'all let's actually create some assignments fun for our kids, so let's create tasks and a resource manager and then we're going to distribute tasks and teacher management so that The first place we're going to start is in the resource managers, let's take a look at what's going on there , so in the resource manager we have some options for how we can deliver those assignments to our students, so we first need to create them in the resource manager.
You'll notice that you have all of your navigation options here, all of your search results in the search bar here, but this folder system is where some of that magic will happen, so we'll select my custom lessons or a folder. of your choice can be any folder you want and we're going to add a new task template there, so I'm going to click on that folder, select the menu and you're going to look for that third option, new task template, so I'm going to add a new task template. I'm going to give it a 2020 home lesson name and take a look at where it landed, so in my folder system, here it is now.
Remember that you can adjust those folders to fit your needs. I'm going to select that lesson and click Edit Now from here. I can load it with all kinds of interesting things. I can load it with particular songs. I can load it with particular activities. I can drag and drop those options directly into that particular task. I can give you information about what I would like to see there. I can move it there. That is an option to configure a task. Another option available to you is to create an assignment from a specific lesson, so we'll see with third grade.
I don't have anything there yet and I'd like to add a third grade lesson that I can play with, so we'll select. Third grade will select. musical alphabet I'm going to drag and drop that eighth note lesson into my folder. Now I see it's there in my folder. My folder turned yellow to tell me it was full with something, but I want to make some adjustments to that task before I do it. anything with this for my students, so I'm going to click on that lesson, I'm going to select the menu and this time the third option has changed slightly now it says create assignment from I'm going to keep the exact same name just for now you can make the adjustments that you need and I'll click OK and here I have that task ready to go.
You'll probably need to make some adjustments here. Maybe eliminate some things. I might actually change some of the instructions, so I'll select that particular screen that I need, then I'll look and see start edit and delete. I'll click Edit and these might be too many instructions for my students, so I can delete any of these. add everything you need and when you click save, it will appear as instructions for my students, so know that you can also delete these elements, you can add additional elements in there and you can even add your own custom screens, so here are new screens. that you could add and insert into that particular assignment, so now that you've done that fun part of creating it, that's probably one of the best parts of teaching.
I can send it to our students, so that will happen in the teacher administration, so create happens in the resource manager, distribution happens in the teacher administration, so let's take a look at what that looks like, here in our dashboard of teachers, now we will return to teacher administration and this is familiar territory that we were in. there for classes we were only there for students now we are on assignments. A quick tip I will point out is that if you submit an assignment to a particular class, make sure you have the class you want selected here. submit that just to make that adjustment, you can also do it here on the next screen, so note that there is a custom tab and an 8th note tab here, the custom tab will include any tasks that you have customized in the resource manager, the quaver.
The tab is loaded with assignments that we have created that also include those masterclass assignments. If you want to find those masterclass assignments, you can find them by searching for music at home and selecting OK and all the music at home will appear. Resources we have included in our master classes that you can also personally assign to your students. We have loaded it over the last few weeks with a lot of things and we will continue to add more resources there if you want to select a particular thing to give as a task we can see that 2020 homeless that I created and you would select that name go to give the task and from there you would make adjustments to the task date and due date and you would only know if you adjust the assigned date to a date after today you won't be able to see it until that day.
You can give your students more instructions and then click Save and voila, you will have an assignment there ready for your students. A couple more notes for people. who have been using quaver for a while, group chat has been disabled so what does it mean it's not disabled permanently it's just disabled by default which means you as a teacher can still use that student and the teacher's chat feature from the beginning, but we wanted to make it a little easier for you to have control over those messaging options. So what can you do if you want to open that backup or you can make some adjustments there?
Just go to that little message bubble on any of these teachers. admin page, select layout options and you can disable everything, which will disable the group and communication with you or keep that group disabled as is or undo whatever floats your boat, whatever you need. Another thing we want to mention is capacity. For school and district level integrations, we can integrate with your district's existing EdTech platforms to make it easy to get Quaver up and running, and we can also set up single sign-on and automated list creation to see what that would look like for you.
Visit our website for a little more information, a specific website for the integration and information is help on musicom slash integrations or you can email our implementation team at quaver ed comm to get started and that really It will be something that will help. It's going to be a conversation between your school or your district administrator, your IT, and our team so we can put it together at scale, so know that it's an option for you. We talked a little earlier about QR codes, but remember those QR codes. They are a great way to put resources in the hands of your students, so remember that we have extended the life cycle of those QR codes so that they last you a little longer and one thing we should mention is that some of you have been specifically assigned to us. non-digital options for your students.
We have a number of resources in the Quaver world that can help you here, so printable project books are great for that. Worksheets are great for that. A specific website that /home 20/20 or Those Slash Care 20/20 websites also have information for you about printable options. We know that circumstances are really going to be variable. Technology accessibility for students is a big part of that, so we'd also be happy to brainstorm with you about some options, so please get in touch. please contact us share your concerns on social media so we and the community at large can resolve it this will work together so I have a couple questions during that so I want to make sure we address as many things as possible. as possible Barbara Lawrence said shakily, how is the process of switching to non-flash going?
Oh, that's a great question, my students are moving from a laptop to an iPad to learn and I'm concerned about the high level of participation in flash activities, so we are very actively moving away from Flash, most resources for Teachers have been out of Flash for about a year and a half, but we still have some student resources, especially related to Quaver Street, that are in the works and are expected to be completely removed at this time. Summer, that's our current timeline, as many of you know, December 2020 is the time when Adobe Flash will no longer be supported, it's going the way of the dinosaur, so we're actively moving those things currently, they're in test, so most of those resources.
It will be ready this summer. Another question we received from Andrea Avant is looking for ideas for households that don't have Internet access but their parents have cell phones. Oh, that's a really good one, so one thing I've noticed is that on my phone if they have a smartphone, especially if you send them a QR code, they'll be able to scan that QR code on their phone using the camera app or something else. QR code app and they'll be able to play with those resources right there on their phone, that's a really great option. I would love to know what other teachers are doing, so thank you for mentioning it because it is a very good possibility for many families.
Mariana Simpson said how many students can you access at one time, it's a great question, we've heard from teachers who have done it successfully with one hundred and twenty kids, two hundred and three hundred kids, our developers have suggested that if you start going up in the range of 400 or 500, that might be a little too taxing for that single account, so keep that in mind while using shared accounts for your students. Also note that shared accounts will only work if you don't ask students to submit quizzes or things that would be graded and that's because the first child will be able to take that test and submit it and the other children won't have access to it, so keep that option in mind too Chris Olson said that our eighth note codes are no longer going to be usable at first, so it depends on the eighth note layers youhave your refrigerator, if you're talking about those code notes, those code notes, we have a couple that we'll share at the end if you're talking about something related to your specific license, please contact our customer service team so we can help you and go a little deeper into that.
Jeana Colton said: how do we get quaver song mp3 files to download? I want to create playlists on my WIP site for students they can't download the songs they just stream so let's take a look at what I'm actually going to share my screen and walk through that process with you so you can see an option that you have is from your teacher dashboard into the game in class and Class Play is our interactive song library and from Class Play you can see a little blue download icon right here, a blue download icon that will allow you to download mp3 options for this song , so they will be just specific tracks, so just the backing track. vocal only so just the vocal line being sung or the full mix which will contain both the backing track and the vocal mix if there are other songs you need to access specifically things you don't see download buttons where let us know.
We can share many of them and some of them we are not allowed to simply because we are only licensed to operate them in streaming form, such as Happy or Dolly Parton songs, so please note that we cannot access them. to all of them, but most of them you can do yourself in the class game, so we have a couple more questions about how I should send student account information to students and I would suggest talking to your administrators. or other teachers to see what the preferred method is for your specific school, if it's emailing that information to families, that's a really great way, if you need help we have information on our help site or contact me personally, email me Emily at quaver edcom and I can help brainstorm with you and one last question: how can we get the QR codes?
Great questions, so I'm going to share my screen with you again, so let's take a look at my screen and the QR codes. They will depend on the particular type of screen that you have there, so I'm just going to choose one screen in a lesson, so let's take a look. here I'm choosing the rhythm lesson and I'm going to look for things that say they have a mobile code enabled, so I'm going to change my view. I can see this little icon right here that says mobile code is enabled there. I'll launch it so that when you're on a specific screen there's a menu in the bottom left corner, you'll see the mobile option right here, so what you can do is select that mobile option.
Actually, you can take a screenshot of this QR code or you could pass this particular URL with that particular 8th note code and send it to your family so that those 8th note codes are already created and ready for you. If you have any questions about how to go about that process, let us know and we can help you. step by step, okay, now we will move on to the next section, which are some of our success stories that we have been hearing from you, we understand that many of you might be starting from scratch in this area of distance teaching and learning.
It's not for the faint of heart, there is a big learning curve and in this segment we wanted to share a variety of success stories from the community. This time we will start with one, but in future distance learning webinars we will share them with you. a couple more, so if you have a success story, please contact us, post it in the quaver music teachers Facebook group. We want to celebrate it, we want to celebrate what's happening because it could benefit someone else, so let's take it. a look at a video that Kayla Williams sent us for Kayla to take with you, Miss Kayla Williams.
I am the music teacher at Wahala Elementary School in Wahala, South Carolina. I just want to share with you how I am using the resource manager for resource creation. and teacher management tools to help my kids who are doing virtual learning at home with their school Chromebooks. I've been picking up right where we left off in the classroom, so I don't want my kids to miss any instruction or material, which is why I do what I do. What I've been doing is going directly to the resource manager and I'm going to use fourth grade as an example and fourth grade was doing the right track.
Fun point when we left, I'll search for romantic here and I opened the lessons here and this week's lesson was less than 26 on how to make music in the romantic period, so I dragged them into my evaluation folder and then I right clicked and clicked in create assessment run or create a task and it gave me this template with that template. I entered custom screens that I had created into the resource creation tool, so I made a recording of myself for the teacher explaining what they could expect in the lesson, so this was the first thing they saw and then the last window they saw.
When you come back at the end, you ask them what your favorite part of today's lesson was and they just record themselves and tell me what they liked. It's nice to see their faces and it's nice to see what they were able to absorb. the lesson now everything in the middle there were things that I felt were applicable since they were at home some of the windows that I had to take out and drag to the recycling bin because it just didn't make sense for them to do it alone at home and not in our music room together so I assigned these assignments through assignments after you make an assignment template in the resource manager window it appears right here so a fourth grade class I was assigned this week's assessments that moved from one side to the other.
See it there. I also assign treble clef champion staff just because they like playing it, so let's recap a couple of the things Kayla shared, she said, picking up where she left off in an instruction. I think it's a great idea that really speaks to that. idea of keeping up with what was happening in the classroom, I see we talked about it before and go from there. She also mentioned resource manager and creating resources to personalize content and discern what content is really best suited for working at home and then she also walked. us assigning the homework was great, thank you for that and I love that you waited a few hours to see who reviewed it by going to the grade book.
I think it's a great idea to see how many kids will like to come and jump right in. those assignments and also mentions not assigning music assessments until the day of their music class and they are sent specific videos to welcome them to the day that may not have been and in that particular segment it was something that she shared and it's It's a really great idea to keep things as normal as possible for your students. A fun fact that she also wanted to share with all of you is that we uploaded over 1000 videos this week, so we are in the process of loading our server. ability to handle that video load, so we want to be able to support that and we are working in development to make that happen.
Also remember that there is a whole community of teachers on Facebook, just search for the Eighth Note Music Teachers Facebook Group and ask to join. There are so many ideas being shared there minute by minute. I also understand that there has been a huge influx of people joining that group and we are very happy to have you and that that particular group is led by a couple of eighth note music teachers. in Oklahoma and the tremor team shows up there from time to time to help, so let us know how we can help see what other tremor teachers are doing.
We are all in this together and we are all going to get through it. So now it's time to say goodbye and we have a lot to share, so don't leave us just yet. We hope you have learned something new and, more importantly, feel more supported as we continue to provide distance music learning opportunities. for your students, so let's recap our goals number one, understand distance learning best practices and options, number two, create and distribute Craver content to student accounts, number three, celebrate success stories from other teachers in the community and learn what might work best for you, so keep those things in mind.
Keep up your hard work now if you've accomplished all those things or you're about to accomplish all those things or you've been with us all this time, we want to make sure you get credit for that so you can start shaking. music.com/pd credit and complete the pd credit form. We have also created an additional 8th note code until May 1st for you to share with your students and that 8th note code is music at home and if you ever need help from the 8th note team please contact customer service at info at quaver music.com or call them at eight six six nine one seven three six three three.

We are here for you. We are here for your students, our hope is to continue to provide you with really fun resources no matter what we know, we know this is a challenging time and we are here to meet that challenge with you and before we go, Graham Hepburn aka Quaver is here with a message for you. so let's play a short glam video. Well, hello to all the Cueva teachers. I know one of the strangest videos that I have been asked to make because eighteen years ago, when I met David on a cruise and it really was a moment that practically changed my life and from that chance meeting, as many of you know, was founded quaver music.com and our Cueva education and he started with him and I and then we had two other employees and now We have about 120 hundred 30 people working for our company, but who would have thought that at this time we would be supporting so many teachers in the middle of a pandemic and it's a really incredible time not only for our company but, of course? for everyone personally for me, my wife and my three children and what we do, how we spend our time and worry about all kinds of things that we never thought we would have to worry about, but I guess one thing is really true and he has become the center of attention as we have been doing this.
I'm sure not just for me but for everyone, but what really matters is each other. What really matters is love, friendship, caring and all the things that sometimes. we take it for granted that in their life we are so busy and so full of staff and so full of things that we think are really important but maybe aren't as important as we think, so I think they feel it, so I guess my A kind of message today of encouragement just to use that most of our time to love the people that are around this and use music because we know that music is a huge leap in our philosophy, that's when often great songs and great works of art are written. because they are able to express the way we feel, they are able to express the emotions we have, so not only for you as teachers but also for the children you teach, music will be a way for them to express their feelings. . and help them overcome a situation that is difficult not only for the children you teach, but also for their parents, their guardians, their grandmothers and grandfathers, etc., I encourage you to keep going and going, just as I encourage my friends and my family and my team, my lovely team, tremble and we hope to see you back in the classroom at some point, but we hope that what we do really helps you know tremor, the company, tremor helps, education exists to serve the others, exists to help others and I know that David, my co-founder, is very clear about this: we truly exist to serve others, so I hope you feel thatwe are serving.
We still want to support you while you are at home. We want to help you with your needs. kind of distance learning resources that we've created, we're planning to improve them, we want to hear from you how we can do it better and we just want to help you because we really care about you so I'm Craven, I've written. a silly song, what message could be better than if it wasn't accompanied by music, so this is my attempt at a silly song, this won't make you cry, ok this is just a silly quaver song, hopefully, to cheer you up , maybe you can do it.
