Does Your Driver Grip Matter | Shocking Results Testing Different Grips

Jun 01, 2021
Alright, the

grip

, this is a question I get asked all the time, what is the best

grip

? Should I have a weaker grip, a neutral grip, or a stronger grip. Well, let's review what they are. In fact, today I did a little test here or hit five shots. with each grip I'll tell you what it felt like to me we're going to compare the swing speed we're going to compare the carry distance the total distance and some of the pros and cons of each of these there's one of these that I really love I don't. like it for most players, although it can work, we'll go over that, so let's start with what I would say is a weaker grip and the way I would classify this is if I held my club up high, this would be towards the sky and I would take my grip to where my logo is, my glove to the sky, now it will still be on the fingers, so when I look here it's like at an angle and it's under the fleshy part of the hand.

To a large extent, all of these

grips

will be like this when I get on the golf ball, you'll see that the logo on my glove is almost towards the target and on my right hand, the little v between my thumb and index finger is more vertical or straight. Up and down is a pretty weak grip, but by most people's standards, some players who have been like that, maybe like Ben Hogan, Tiger Woods is not that weak, but he's on the weaker side, so There are some good players who have that kind of grip. but what I don't like about this grip is that if I want to tilt the shaft a little and deflate it, I really have to bend my wrist a lot.

I really have to know if I want to get it from within. I have to look like Dustin Johnson or Brooks Kepca or some of those guys to really close the face and get some lean on the axis so for me this is one of the most erratic ones so when I look at these numbers here when I go to the chart and I'll see that my average carry distance was 255 which is very low for me, we'll see that compared to the other 277 total, my ball speed was 160, my swing speed was 109, so no They are the best numbers.

There we are going to compare with the others. I feel like I'm trying to nail all of these really well, but man, that feels like a lot of work. You'll also notice this when I put this screen back into the shot. The tracer patterns were very sporadic for me, so I'm hitting some that are big cuts, I mean some that are big hooks. There is so much rotation that it is very difficult for me to be aware of exactly where the face is, so I also don't like this grip so much because it creates a lot of lag, it's not that you can't do it, it's just that you have to have very flexible wrists to be able to square that, get the delay, it just

does

it a little bit.

It is more difficult for most players. I think most players have trouble getting enough tilt. I think almost everyone could tilt or twist their wrist more as they go, so let's not make it any harder on ourselves now. The second grip would be just neutral here, which would be exactly what I normally take, so here, when I have this club facing the camera, my club will be slightly closed probably about 10 to 15 degrees and now the grip is up. In heaven, when I head to the club, you'll see that the v between my thumb and fingers is now more or less towards the right side of my chin, my right hand will be more towards my right shoulder, which is traditionally the most people would say it's a pretty neutral grip, that's what I normally do with my own grip, so if I look at the numbers, I remember 250 some carry 109 club head speed now let's go to my neutral grip 279 chosen carry about 22 yards carry 300 yards total average driving distance, got seven miles per hour swing speed, got 10 miles per hour ball speed.
Now you could argue that the reason I did all those things is that, well, it's just a

different

grip, so Yes, clay, you're going to play a little better if you use

your

normal grip than if you use a weaker grip at that you're not used to it, but again, swing speed I find that happening and really when we get into In this third one, I'm going to refute that playing with a

different

grip is not necessarily what's happening now. I would say if you look at the consistency of those shots, they are very, very consistent and it's mainly because of how I felt. was doing and I knew where the clubface was, none of the other

grips

are going to be as consistent because it's not just what I'm used to now, when I go here and take my third grip, I'm actually going to use it. a really strong grip, so now that face will probably be closed between 30 and 45 degrees when the logo on my glove is facing the sky and when I look at that, I call this type of hammer grip, actually let me go. take a hammer, I'll show you exactly what I mean by that now with this kind of little hammer here, I don't have a big one lying around, but if I take this normal or if I take this stronger grip my hand is turned a little bit more towards the right so again the club would be closed compared to the angle of my wrist here it's almost like I have a hammer like this if I'm gripping a hammer up and down like the nail of my hammer and I turned it's this way and now this golf ball I'm going to hit the back of the golf ball that way so my grip is really turned sideways, it's kind of a Paul Azinger grip, it's one of the strongest grips you can see in the pga tour and the right hand will be the same, it is much lower like this and it is almost as if the right hand is going to hit the back of that golf ball, the advantage of this one is that I don't have to as much of the wrist movement , so we're seeing DJ really tilting his wrist.
Are you looking at those guys who have their wrist really bent from the impact on their right wrist, right knuckles really bent back? You don't have to do that. if you have the hammer grip, if I were to actually take that hammer grip and do the same thing, it would actually be too closed, too much forward lean, too little loft, too much hook, which most players need a lot more of that, so when I tried that grip. I have to tell you that I really felt better in the contact. If I go back, I'll go back to the first two pilots here on my controller.
The smash factor averaged 1.48 on my regular controller. I averaged 1.47 on my weak grip controller and I averaged 1.48 on my stronger grip controller. Now I had a bad moment where it was only 1.43, but I had one that was the highest, 1.51. I have to tell you, it felt amazing. 278 carry 295 distance a little bit shorter than my normal ball speed 170 115 club head speed and a half pretty similar there so what I found with this and I think it's kind of interesting and I think it would actually be a good grip to experiment. from some players is that when I take this really strong hammer grip, it automatically puts me further to the right, what I call stable fluid spine, it automatically puts me in a position where I feel like it's very easy to fall behind, it's almost impossible with this grip go up to the top like this, you take this strong grip, you'll automatically come from the inside, bringing that stick down, bringing it out from the inside like that, it's probably what I would call the cheater's grip, this is the cheater's type of position. you really make it strong and man you can get a lot of those positions without having to work as hard at it so I would say most players tend towards the stronger type of grip now the downside to this is that it was so strong that in my brain if I move my body the way a golf swing should move and I have pretty good fundamentals in my swing, I feel like it's going to hook me like crazy.
I feel like I'm going to hit crazy duck hooks to the left so I really have to feel like I'm holding and I don't like that feeling as much for some players because it's very easy if I feel like I'm holding to almost back off a little bit and maybe hit . some chunks in there, so that would be the only disadvantage with that stronger grip now, no

matter

what you do, no

matter

if we take a weak grip, a neutral grip or a strong grip, it's very important that we are square with this stick face up. the right way, so when I'm taking my downswing we'll see all of those players, even the strong grip players, they won't have cupped wrists and this very open face, they'll all have the club toe up or slightly. left wrist flat closed or moderately closed here as they go, so the hammer grip we don't cup the left wrist like this, it will still be flat like this, it's just not rotated as much as the neutral and weaker grip. grip, it will actually be a little bit, it will be flat or even slightly curved when you come into contact, so each player will close the clubface and flatten the left wrist.
Now I have a great exercise for you. To teach you exactly how to do it, it's called the tennis racket exercise and I'll walk you through it step by step, so no matter what grip you use, it will be much easier to achieve that solid contact. I would not do it. I recommend the weaker grip, but try it on the tennis racket drill. Try all three to see which one is most comfortable for you. All you need to do is go ahead and click on the card that appears somewhere on

your

screen if not. I don't see that card, don't worry, go to the link in the description below and you will get instant access.
Good luck. I can't wait to share with you some of the secrets of this tennis racket exercise. You can pair it. get the best grip feel try them out in this video let's go and get started problems for good players we're going to talk about how to deepen the shaft of the club as we start down while we do this rotating on the face I worked on in the last video As we start this losing streak, what you'll see with basically all the top players is instead of reaching a little bit over the top and letting their hands move away from their body letting the club come out. away from your body again, coming down steeply towards the ball and then having to open up sort of a snaffle, open up the face and add loft to it, the flattening of the shaft needs to happen as soon as we start going down, so that when we start this downswing, which We want it to have happened here, you can imagine if I draw a line from the shaft of my club to my right elbow, that's my swing plane, the line of my elbow plane as I go to the top of the swing, I'll be slightly above that. and then as I start to come down, I want my hands to start getting shallow, I want the club to get shallow within this plane of the elbow and at the same time I'm going to be you.
