class101.com hello everyone my name is alicia welcome back to top words today we are going to talk about 10 ways to stop translating in your head let's get started Identify the objects around you in English. The first way to stop translating in your head is to identify the objects around you in your target language. If you're studying English, that means you look at the objects around the room and you look at the things in your life. don't think about them in your

native

language first, think about them first in your target language, so if I look around the room I see a computer, I shouldn't think about the word from my

native

language, I should think about the word from my target language, so start with the elements and situations in your everyday life if I say computer in English maybe I should say compute in Japanese I should say no I don't know water in English I should say omizu in Japanese so start associating the words in your target language with your everyday life now, so if you are studying English, that means starting to get familiar with things in your everyday life in English.

Repeat the phrases you hear native

speak

ers use. Tip number two is to repeat the phrases that you hear native

speaker

s use, so if you're watching this channel, for example, or you're watching a TV show or a movie, listen to the way native

speaker

s say those phrases, If you hear a phrase you

have

never heard before or hear an interesting combination of words, try repeating them yourself, don't just listen, try saying them yourself if you are in a public space and find it difficult to do that good practice in a place where you feel more comfortable, maybe if you

have

a private space to practice, just repeat them. used to saying the words the same way that the speakers do, the native speakers, if you never say words, if you just assimilate, if you just listen and you're not actually producing the language, it's a little difficult to really practice and perfect your pronunciation to improve it, so when you listen to native speakers try to repeat after them.

For example, if you are studying English, you can try to repeat after this video. You can repeat after the things I am. I say because maybe I'm using an expression or I'm using a certain series of vocabulary words together like a native speaker would and maybe it's a good idea to try to practice the ways that native speakers put their words together, so try to repeat After talking to native speakers, especially when watching media, you can also do this when reading books. You can try reading aloud interesting lines from books you find or something you may find difficult.

Very good practice. tip creating a situation where you can't escape into your native language creating a situation where you can't escape into your native language essentially means immersing yourself, of course, going to that country or going to a place where you can only speak that language. It's very difficult for some of you to fully understand, but if in your life you can create a situation in your library, in your room, somewhere in your house, somewhere for just an

hour

or I don't know, maybe a day, I don't know what their schedule is. I like it, but if you can create a situation or create an environment where you have no choice but to use that language and you can't escape, that is, you can't go back to using your native language as a crutch, you can't use the native language in absolute. it forces you to use the language you're studying, so of course if you're lucky enough to live in the country or a place where people speak the language you're studying, that's great, but you have to go out and interact with the people.

You have to put yourself in a place where you have no choice but to talk, it's very difficult, it's very scary and it's very embarrassing at first, but if you take the time to find places and create environments that are comfortable for you, where you feel comfortable . making mistakes and asking questions is very valuable to your learning process. Actually, this is something I totally did. I totally did it. My Japanese wasn't very good for a long time, but then I started making friends who couldn't speak English. In fact, I just did it. this through finding hobbies, there was a hobby that I had, I joined a group, I actually joined a school where I could learn how to do that hobby and everything was taught only in Japanese and the people in my class only spoke Japanese mostly and then maybe We would go out for drinks and food late at night or on weekends and everyone spoke only Japanese and if I couldn't communicate even in Japanese, I had no hope of keeping that friendship together, so that forced me to study. thinking about the words they were using and trying to learn those words, those patterns, as well as how to produce them naturally, so I was learning the vocabulary of the words that the people around me were using and learning how to apply them on my own, that was only possible because there was no escape in those situations, so try to do it even if you can do it yourself at home, it is very useful.
I think watching TV and movies in your target language without subtitles. Tip number four is to watch TV and movies in your target language without subtitles without subtitles, so I think watching it with subtitles can be very beneficial, so if I'm watching something or if you want to watch something with subtitles, that's great, but a Sometimes I find that I can, in my case I think I also A lot about reading the subtitles and forgetting to listen, so maybe if you've watched a movie in your target language a few times with the subtitles on, try turning them off and think about the Similar characters' body language, the words they're using, um.
You can always look that up later, look up words that you know that you don't know in a dictionary, but try to do it by focusing entirely on the way people use their words, try not to use subtitles, so, um. Play around with it, if there is a word that is difficult for you to hear, you can turn on the subtitles in the native language of the movie. That's something I've done. If you would like to study Japanese, it is very helpful when actual spoken Japanese words appear on the screen. Sometimes I find it easier to grasp a word if I see it visually and hear it at the same time, so it's another way to explore how. you can use television and movies to activate subtitles as the words on the screen in the native language of the movie, so this is kind of two dots in one, so one watches movies without subtitles, which means subtitles on your native language and the second suggestion is to watch movies with subtitles on, but the subtitles are in your target language, not your native language, so you can try those two things with television and with movies, don't bring a dictionary to your lesson.
Tip number five is not to bring a dictionary to your lesson, okay, so give me a second to understand dictionaries, especially electronic dictionaries that we now have on our phones, they are very convenient, of course, it is important to use them and It's a great resource, however, one thing that really bothers me and that I think is disruptive and not helpful to students is when students are in a lesson and they are practicing conversation and they get to a point in the conversation. in which they don't They don't know the word they want to use, they know it in their native language and they don't know how to say it in their target language, they take out their dictionary, they tell this to the person listening to them, their practice partner in their lesson . where they have a limited period of time, just a moment and then they look it up on their phone, it takes a few seconds, the flow of the conversation stops and then they say one word and it's like, wow, no, no, you don't have that. ability, you don't have the ability to do that in a conversation with a native speaker, most people like if you go to a bank and try to open a bank account, are you really going to take out your dictionary and sit there and try to communicate? ? you know just a moment, just a moment while you look up every word you don't know, no or if you do, that's not a real conversation, so try using a different strategy, that is, if you find a word you don't know.
In a conversation, explain the word to your interlocutor. Maybe they know the word. If you are talking to a native speaker, this is an opportunity for them to teach you a word. I find that when people take the time to teach me a word, I remember the word much better than just looking it up in my dictionary, so try to resist, maybe you can bring a dictionary to your lesson, but don't use it or try not to. Using it in your conversation practice simply destroys the flow of a conversation, so instead, practice the skill of describing the vocabulary word you want to use and learn to ask the meaning of a word or learn to ask it for a vocabulary word to your partner so you can use an expression like ah, what's the word that means blah, blah? blah or um, you know it's this thing that does this and this and this, so this is an opportunity for you to describe the characteristics of something or find a different way that you can use your body language, you can use whatever. , you have many tools, but try it. not to use a dictionary in a conversation because it's unrealistic to train answers to common questions number six is quick, I think clue number six number six that I have is just to train answers to common questions train answers to common questions, so for For example, a very common question in English is Hey, how are you?
You should know how to answer this question. You only have one default answer. Hey, how are you? I'm good if it takes you a long time to answer the question. Hey, how are you? You need to practice. I think that's a pretty good indicator, so, for example, sometimes I ask students a question like that and they haven't had the idea of how to answer it yet, they're not that quick to answer, I say, hey, how do you? are? You and they say yes and then you think and say, "I'm fine." That's a very common question, so come up with a predetermined answer that you can spit out and quickly say how was your weekend or how was it? or what do you want to make for dinner tonight think of just a handful, that is, just a few answers to those questions and quickly get them through how are you?
I am good how are you? I am good how are you? not bad there are three, so they are just training answers to those questions, there is no reason to be surprised with a question like how are you? That's a very common question, so for those common questions train the answers to that, we have a lot of videos, especially beginner level videos for some sample answers you can do, so don't get stuck with these little questions, just train a few responses, practice a few responses until they feel natural to you, it will save you time and help the person asking the question get moving too. forward in the conversation, yes, study with materials that do not provide translation, the next tip is to study with materials that do not provide translation, so by this I mean if you are using worksheets or some type of textbook or whatever be and you have your target language, the language you are studying and you have your native language next to it, although this can be helpful, I think if you can study your materials only in your target language and then simplified explanations for more detailed points also in Your target language may be a little better, so I don't want to say that you should only study things in your target language and nothing in your native language because of course sometimes it can be useful to look up a word or understand one. grammar point in your native language, but where possible, if you can find something that provides simplified explanations in your target language, it can be really helpful because again you're thinking you're learning to think more simply on a more basic level about the language that you are studying in the language that you are studying, so this can be really good, so finding some materials to use where there is no translation maybe you can practice, of course, with books and written materials, but also with similar materials in video.
Additionally, there are a variety of different ways you can find materials in your target language, such as in videos and television, so some things to think about are the level of vocabulary words people use in the multimedia content. what are you watching. who the multimedia content is intended for children, youth, adults, the speed at which the speaker speaks, so I have the ability to change the difficulty level of the videos depending on the speed of speech, the vocabulary words I use and How many idioms do I like? and the things I use to be able to make a very difficult video.
We could make a very difficult series of videos leveling up our vocabulary use or speaking very quickly or as you can see in our three-minute English series. We can also use very simple vocabulary and speak at a low pace, so maybe right now this is a very intermediate level video, library near here. If you are not familiar with an area, you can ask to obtain this. information about a specific place you want to go is the bathroom near here excuse me do you know where it is excuse me do you know where it is for example you can say excuse me do you know where the park is young people only excuse me when you are starting a conversation with a stranger, another common phrase is "far from here", "far from here", for example, you can say "it's the post office here".
This is an indirect way of asking for directions. People will tell you how far the place is and will probably tell you the best way to get there by walking, taking a bus, driving uber, now let's look at the expressions for giving directions, turn left, turn left, For example, you can say turn left after two blocks, this gives you information about how far away you are. you must go before making any changes, in this case you must go left left left turn right turn right, for example you can say turn right at the third traffic light.
This also gives you information on how far you should go before taking another action in this case you should go right, go straight, go straight, this simply tells you to go in one direction, it also implies that if you go straight you will eventually find what you are looking for, pass by, pass by, for example, you can say pass by the church, a landmark is just an easily visible place, for example, a cinema, a restaurant on the corner of, on the corner of, for example , you can say that it is on the corner of, this means that a place is located on the corner where two streets meet facing each other.
For example, you can say that the bus station is in front of the supermarket, we use front to refer to the main entrance. of a building can also mean visible from the front and does not necessarily mean directly in front of something behind behind, for example you can say the car park is behind the cinema, we use behind to say something is at the back of a building , the front of a building is its main entrance, so which side faces the street is not really important the next two, the next two, for example, you can say that the restaurant is next to the park.
This is an example of using a non-specific location to give general instructions. The next two can be anywhere next to each other. in front of or around a place, McDonald's is next to my house, between, for example, you can say the store is between the cafe and the pet store, between is used with two other places when between is used, the main place will always be in the middle of the other two places, that's okay, that's all for this lesson, which phrase do you like the most, leave us a comment and let us know and see you next time guys, bye guys, I'm Paris from englishclass101 .com, in this video.

I had three older brothers who beat me up and told me that boy bands are for girls, they don't like boy bands, so that was my experience with them and they became kind of uncool. I feel like after the 90s they never stopped being cool. Korea and like a lot of Asian countries still had a kind of strong boy band, kind of scene or whatever now, that's what they're called, no, I don't know, I just want to say, I think I feel like a boy, there are boys bands that are now becoming boys for men maybe this so I mean now they came now they came back like what's the what's the brit now it's something cool again oh one direction one direction yeah so I think it's back it's a circle complete They have not just separated.
I'm going to go with something I loved in the '90s. This is probably too specific. Probably, but it's a show called Doug that was on Nickelodeon and there weren't many Doug episodes. It was I don't know like 20 or 30, I feel like not even that many ever watched this show, yeah, that's very nostalgic for me, I don't know 20 30 episodes, I feel like I've seen them all. I know I saw them all because I would come back and show up one day after school and it would be like I watched this episode, but the whole idea with Doug is that Doug was like this, just this simple kid and he had an older sister, he went to the school, he had a dog, he got a best friend and he would run into everyday life situations that would be a little worrying or he wouldn't know how to deal with them, but he was kind of a role model, I feel like he was like a good kid, or sometimes he would get into trouble, but then you know he would eventually solve the problem or find a way out, so I really loved that show.
I really loved Nickelodeon in general, um during the '90s and yeah, did you watch that channel? Yes, of course, I loved Nickelodeon. I think it was more like fox stuff like that, but I guess I'll move on to the other one of mine you're talking about. healthy, so some of my childhood, I grew up on TV, they were sitcoms, yeah, so I think this has died down again like boy bands where people think it's cheesy now it's all reality shows television that kind of thing, but that's my childhood. There's, you know, the full house and these kind of step-by-step shows where there's a moral at the end of the story and everyone there is always like the protagonist always says maybe he's not sure, but in the end they know the right thing. . something to do and they play like the violin, a little sad, not quite sad, but they like soulful music, and then they say, well, then they give a speech and, as a child, you know you don't like it, think about it , but that becomes deep in your taste because of the full house, if you lie, I've learned this, it's deep in my subconscious, if you lie and then you keep lying, it builds up like a snowball and gets worse, worse and it gets worse, so it's better to tell the truth right away. that was a very common theme in most sitcoms.
I think they are just trying to teach children not to lie. It's bad, you're right, you're right, sitcoms are huge and by the way, sitcoms um it's um it's an acronym acronym. that is, two words together of situation and comedy, so situation and comedy are equal to situation comedy in this case, okay, okay, I'm going to go to the next one, let's see, I think probably all the girls in the 90s in the United States knew what this was. I don't know if you knew um it's this brand called Lisa Frank um Lisa Frank, are you aware of Lisa Frank, are you aware of Lisa Frank, no, okay, she knows, she knows what Lisa Frank is, so Lisa Frank is, um , just brilliant, it always was like bright colored school supplies, like pinks and purples and blues, and it would always have unicorns and dolphins and mystical creatures, it was just brilliant and everyone, all the girls loved it, I loved it, it had to lisa frank, everything i could get.
It would be pencils or erasers or just roses and rainbows and hearts and stuff like that, so I think every girl who grew up in the '90s knows what Lisa Frank is. She isokay, so talking about style and all that grunge is something that impacts me. close to home for me and I think it came about in the '90s, I mean, everyone knows it around the world. I think most people know about nirvana, yeah, Kurt Cobain, yeah, and this is something that I guess was brought to the world from Seattle and it was a musical genre and it was kind of like rock, but sometimes slower, almost. emo, kind of a sad undertone, generally, but anyway the style that went with it was the opposite of the 80s and early 90s, really bright colors.
You know, I was the opposite of you. just wear holy jeans, you don't really shower that much, you don't shave and you like plaid and you really like sad colors so that was really popular, at least I remember it in the early 90's, like mid 90's Yes, and it's so soon. When I saw that grunge card I thought, oh nirvana, that's the first thing that comes to mind when I hear something grunge. Although I didn't get into the grunge scene, I was busy with boy bands, but For me, grunge was never really, I was aware, I was aware of nirvana, but I didn't, I wasn't mod nirvana, okay, then I'll go too to a point of style because you have read a point of style that I will put. mention maybe um a feminine style scrunchies uh still popular maybe among some people what is a scrunchie a scrunchie let's see, I don't have it, so there are regular elastic bands that you can use to tie up long hair.
He's forming an O with his hands yeah this is very descriptive very descriptive Michael thank you so no you like me to be the prop and then you say this there's something like that but I bet there's a team awesome video somewhere you can put it on as a scrunchie like here anyway, um yeah a scrunchie is just a piece of elastic with some kind of colorful fabric wrapped around it, but when it's not in use it will go away and will wrinkle, I think I think that's why. We call it a scrunchie, but then when you pull on it, you can expand it a little bit and wrap your hair in it and then when you're done doing that, it closes around it.
It had a couple of things related to Nintendo games. I remember Game Boys, anything handheld, except when I was a kid, it wasn't as fancy in 3D, you know, I really liked the vibrant colors, it was like black and white and like you played it in the car and you had to squint. . and your head hurtsI know that if you play too much you get dizzy and you can barely see Mario. Are you talking about Game Boy, Game Boy or something? There was also a handheld computer, there was like Atari and things like that and like Sega.
Sega was pretty good and lit up. I was thinking about NES when you said Nintendo. I figured my NES that, when it didn't work properly, you could just pull out the cassette and put it back in, so you put the cartridge in here. true, and sometimes if it was really stubborn and it didn't work, you would blow on this part and try it and it didn't really make a difference, but you would take turns like me and my brothers would say no, do you want to be? the one that makes it work so they take turns no no no let me let me and just by luck it would work and you're like cece yeah no this is super nostalgic I love Nintendo I have a game too do you have pogs ? pogs, okay, pogs are both the most brilliant game and the stupidest game ever invented, they're just cardboard discs this size, uh, and on one side there's a picture and on the other side there's nothing and then you had something called a slammer which was essentially just a heavy cue that you used and you had to flip you had to use the slammer to flip those cardboard simple ones which I don't even know was such a stupid forgettable game but it was like crazy when it was on, no I know, like second or third grade or something, they all had pogs like we had pog days in the gym at my school, I remember that, excuse me, America, we're very obese, let's go to the gym and sit there and smash cardboard bowls and like I was telling her I was telling her before we started this like one day my mom wanted me to cut my hair and I was being stubborn and I wasn't going to do it I was at the mall it was how I want to cut my hair she says : I'll buy you pogs and he did, it was like a giant tube of pogs and I was so excited that I agreed to get a good haircut, there were a lot of exciting things and or popular and/or we liked in the 90s, what did you like in the 90s, what was popular in your country?
I really have no idea what was popular around the world at the time, maybe some of these things are similar, let us know in the comments I'm very interested to know we read them by the way, um, any ideas, any others, any final thought on the 90s, you're not going to sing a song for us, oh that's copyright, we can't do that, just blur it. not everything, that was very accurate, so I'm sure we can use it and I'm very accurate, I mean totally wrong, we're clearly very good at talking about the 90s, okay, but we hope you are too. that you learned something exciting about the 90s um that's all for us today thank you very much for watching and we'll see you soon bye hello everyone my name is alicia and michael is joining me again in the studio hello and today we're I'm going to talk about conversation strategies in English, so let's get right into it.
Let's start with Michael. What is your first strategy to maintain a conversation in English? This is very important, don't say I'm fine, thank you and you will hear this all the time. time of ESL students or non-native speakers you learn this is one of the first things you learn in an English class it's easy it's good it's basic it's the foundation okay, okay, but as soon as you can change it because for me when I meet a foreigner and they come up and if they say hey how are you you say oh I'm fine you know I'm fine whatever about you and they say I'm fine thank you and you and it's almost robotic because I've said it so many times and when I hear that I think that their English is not that good and inside I'm going to be very polite and say hello and talk slowly and try to get out of there as quickly as I can.
In my opinion I can really impress the foreigner, I think the best way to do it is to say something you know, use a big word or just like a slang word, something like that when I hear that I say wow I want to know what this person is . think I want to hear your point of view and I'm really excited and then I've had some great conversations because of that um yeah that's a really good one and in fact I think on this YouTube channel from a couple of years ago there's a video all about best answers to the question how are you then I'm fine thank you and you or if someone says hey how are you I'm fine you're fine I'm never fine thank you and never but try it use, you know a phrase that a native speaker would use and then that's a clue to the native speaker that, oh, maybe this person is ready for a conversation beyond your basic knowledge of English, so that's a really good point that I like that didn't occur to me. things not to do I just thought of things to do, so okay, cool, let's see, let's go to the first one, oh, so this strategy in general is just asking the other person a question, I think, and I'm guilty of this also when I'm learning another language.
I tend to just get feedback, like someone is always asking me the questions and then I forget to ask the other person a question, so a question I like to ask or you know a variation of some kind. The question is good as a who, what, where question, something like this, if you've been paying attention you can use any form of transition in your conversation, this was in a previous video, you can ask something like, anyway, to something fun this weekend, this is a pretty casual conversation question that you can ask anyone, whether you've just met them or you've known them for a while, but just get in the habit of asking other people the question.
Don't wait for someone else to do it. you're the question um so that's a strategy I try to use to keep things going. Yeah, I agree too and I'm going to say the same thing because actually two of my questions were exactly what you said, okay 100, this is kind of cheating. should be one but always ask questions so you know again you forget it's very easy I'm really guilty of this English that's not English whatever it is I'm guilty of this um and the other thing is asking deep questions and open. So if you ask a yes or no question, again, like Alicia was saying, they're dead ends, you can't just say you know, you like cheese, yes or no, so you want to say what you think about cheese, What is your favorite?
I kind of open it up to something else and leave it as a kind of snowball, right, yeah, I think that's really a key, like I have another variation that I guess I'll continue with because it kind of relates to what you're talking, like he's saying: always ask questions, always ask deep open questions, so maybe you just said don't ask a yes or no question because yes or no ends with yes or no, a one of the things I'm going to do is use a pattern similar to this, like hey, did you see or hear about blah, blah, blah, so you can use this little blah, blah, blah like you, can you ask about the news? you can ask about something funny that you saw on the internet you can ask about um you know something that you heard from another friend of yours whatever uh it's just a way of communicating with the other person and saying oh, did you experience this too? that I experienced, let's talk about that, so that could be another question that you can use with people that I like, that one, I really like it, because you have to stay within people's comfort zone, so maybe you ask and Maybe they don't want to do it right.
So the good thing is if you heard about it, that's up to them, maybe they don't want to talk about it, they can say, oh yeah, I heard about that and you can feel the atmosphere and realize maybe I should. I don't talk about this, they change the subject or they get passionate and start talking about it and there you go and just let it go. Yes, absolutely, one more thing I'm guilty of is that you have to keep giving it back well, no. let me not just say oh yeah and what I think about that bring it back ask them what about you um that's a common thing that I forget yeah yeah yeah okay um well I have one more this one um use it whenever you see fit don I guess which is fine, I'll just introduce it to complement the other person or compliment the other person.
This can be a good strategy just to show that you are enjoying the other person's company. It can be as simple as, oh, I like your shirt. today oh, what a nice dress you're wearing today oh, did you get a new haircut that suits you, something like that, so this is a good way to make the other person maybe want to spend more time with you? I think so, I agree 100 um two things one I think it's a good conversation starter sometimes um if you have to be careful with the stranger it can be creepy it can be a little awkward what you're complimenting, but if it's something like They have a t-shirt and it's a band they both like, it's a great conversation starter and they feel like we're connected, you know, number two.
The second thing I was thinking about is to be honest, I love it, I love it. a sincere compliment, it really means a lot more and it really encourages them, opens them up to having more deeper conversations, that kind of thing, um, but one of the things that people do that I don't like is say, hello. nice shirt and then the person out of habit will say oh you too, I like your shirt too just my opinion, I don't think this feels very natural, it doesn't feel really sincere, so I would save it, make a mental note and would go.
Hmm, I need to return the favor. I need to give them a compliment, but wait until you notice something you really like and say, "Hey, I actually love it, blah blah, yeah, I think that's a great point, like when you can feel if someone is being sincere." or not, what is your next strategy to continue the conversation in English? Well, don't be afraid to open up. I like this. I think it's good. A lot of people will be a little shy. They won't open up too much inside you. comfort zone, but I like this one because people will return the favor because if you're just making small talk and you say you know the weather is nice today, blah blah, you can only go so far so don't be afraid to go back to it. say something personal.
Trust your judgment, don't be a creep, don't leave, we don't want to hear certain things about your life, so no, don't be a creep, don't be a creep, don't be weird, don't be. I miss and I like what you're saying about opening up, opening up is just a phrase that means sharing something about yourself, so it can be as simple as what you did last weekend or what you're going to do this weekend or a project that you have ahead of you doesn't mean that you have to tell all the secrets of your life to the other person, but simply showing that you are willing to share something more personal about yourself can help you ingratiate yourself or help you know how to do the other person. . person helps the other person understand you a little better that's good advice I like that advice it's hard to do although it's difficult it's a little scary I think sharing parts of yourself but it'sWell it's a good way to meet people and make friends, okay, I think that's it, all you have, yeah, that's all I have, okay, well, those are some interesting strategies to keep a conversation going English, so try them out if you're ever at a loss for words and I don't know what to say, you can try one of these strategies and hopefully it will help you.
