I also wanted to say a quick thank you to hellofresh for partnering with me to bring you today's video. Now let's jump right into this makeover starting with some DIY shelves. Usually I would start by emptying the room I'm working in, but I wanted to make some wood stained shelves so I needed to take enough time to prepare them so they would be dry enough to install, so I'm actually going to create three different shelves here. I'm going to use that piece of plywood. to create almost like a folding table that will sit almost directly on top of my washer and dryer and then I'll use those 2x12s to create some hanging shelves on the wall behind my washer and dryer and that's where I'll put all of my storage and decor laundry room, but right now I'm just taking my time to prepare them properly, so I sanded these three different times.

I only needed to do one coat of course because it's stain and not paint, but I think it really shows through. Well, I like how rustic and imperfect it is, but I didn't show it before. I have these two because there will be a lip on the shelf that goes over the washer and dryer and then I have the two shelves to hang on the wall, this will be like the folding table over the washer and dryer and then I have three of these pieces and those will be the supports for this folding table, but yeah, I'm excited to do it.
Get this all up and make some real progress with this project, of course now that I'm done with the boards for the shelves it's time to completely empty this space and as you can see it's definitely a small space that we're working on this is a laundry closet, it's absolutely the size of a normal closet, in fact I think my master bedroom closet is the same size as this one, there was a mess in there before, but I'm going to clean it up. everything, including the shelves that were already there, there were these really crappy closet shelves that just didn't fit because there was also a wooden shelf that had been made here before, so I'm not really sure why they had the ones that didn't match, but this cabinet has fallen over several times and I'm glad I can finally get rid of it, so I'm going to work on getting it out and then I'll move on to the wooden one to get this wire shelf out.
It was much easier than getting the wooden shelf, so I'm just going to use the magic of YouTube to completely clean up the space. I also used this dry deck filler, it was like a quick dry, it turns pink and then when it's dry it's white and I'm going to use this sanding block to sand all the walls and make sure everything is a smooth, prepped surface properly because I'm going to put up some peel and stick wallpaper and I want to make sure it sticks properly and looks as good as possible in case it wasn't very clear before.
Dry deck putty is what I used to fill all the holes that were left in the wall, so luckily none of the drywall came apart, there were no holes or anything like that when I took the wood shelf down, but there were a lot of holes of nails, screws and anchors everywhere, so I just wanted to make sure I filled every single one of them. There were also some areas where the drywall paper had peeled off so there wasn't a hole in the drywall but it was just an uneven surface and I also used caulk in those areas and applied it and it took about an hour to dry up.
And that's when I'm sanding everything and I'm really taking my time with that sanding block and making sure I get every part of this surface to make sure it's all as smooth and prepped as possible. You really want to take your time if you're doing a project like this and then as soon as I'm done with all the sanding, I'll go in with my e-cloth flexible edge floor and wall duster and get all that caulk and dust out of the paneling. plaster the walls and then Derek will come in and wash all the walls and this whole space for me so it's a smooth, clean surface.
I didn't film it, but when I was done with this derrick I did. Go in with some warm water and a dish soap solution and wipe down all the walls and the floor so we can put this beautiful blush on the wall. This is Fiona's print and it's just kind of a muted green olive branch and it's stunning. He's so stunning on camera, he looks pretty, but the camera just doesn't do him justice in person. I'm just obsessed, I'm so in love with it, but anyway, before I ordered this, I watched a ton of tutorials, read a ton of blog posts and they all said the first panel is the hardest, but I'm here to tell you That was the easy part and the hardest part was the corner.
Now I'm sure a lot of people don't put up wallpaper like that often. Some of them probably just made an accent wall, but we had two corners here and a spoiler alert. I ended up having to turn off the camera and do it without it because it was really really difficult and honestly showed the poor craftsmanship on the walls and just the construction of this laundry closet wasn't the fault of the wall flush at all, it was just bad craftsmanship on my laundry space. You can really see me struggling here and finally I had to take it all off, take a few deep breaths and then try it again without filming well guys I finally got the whole wall flushed and we put the washer and dryer back in here and it was a lot , it looks absolutely beautiful, I'm very happy with it, but it was also like that.
A lot, this took us about three hours to do, which I think is really standard for peel and stick wallpaper, but my memory card wouldn't have been able to record all those images, plus we made so many mistakes, we had to take it back. I uploaded it and replayed it many times so I didn't want to film anything but I know there will be people who will comment and say that's the part they wanted to see the most and I cut it out of the footage so I'm going to go over it and tell you what which I did, but God, it's so pretty, it's so pretty, so even though it was a pain in the ass, I'm really glad I decided to do this, um, but Anyway, you can see here that we have some ripples and this corner was the worst and I ended up cutting it right here since we are going to make that shelf with the mantel so it will be hidden.
There is that, but if you are a perfectionist, this is not for you, I am a bit of a perfectionist and this was really difficult, there will be waves, there will be some little bubbles that you just won't be able to get out. and like I said, the corners were very difficult, but essentially once I learned it, it became a little bit easier and what I would do is start from the top, the first panel was the easiest. I started from the top. and I just worked down and smoothed everything out, but then with the next panel, let me see if it'll catch it here on camera.
I thought it would be like matching the seams, but it didn't. I'm not sure if you can see it right there or not, but it was overlapping, so to place the next panels it would just match up like here, you can see it very well, in fact, I matched where it needed to be. and the seam here is actually this wide, it comes in, it's not flush, so I would join it from the left side and smooth it out to the right and then across the corner and then all the way around I did the same thing with these, I just attached them where the pattern needed to be and then smoothed them out this way and smoothed them out to place them on the wall correctly, so it's tedious and time consuming, and there were points where it was very frustrating, but like I said to the End of the day, I'm so glad I decided to do this.
I think it looks absolutely beautiful, it's exactly what I imagined and I know that now that I've made one. project if I do another one with this peel and stick wallpaper it will probably be a lot easier so we were almost done with the diy projects last thing on the list was hanging those shelves. Now I told you what I was creating. one that was like a folding table that would go right on top of my washer and dryer and I was making it out of this plywood, so here I'm going to pre-assemble it that way, we can just drop it down. the laundry closet when we are ready to put it in.
The reason I have this little shelf here instead of just having the plywood board across the washer and dryer to the back wall is because if you were paying attention before you could see. that the hoses on our washing machine and then also the electrical plugs on the washer and dryer are kind of floating in the middle of the wall behind them and you can see that and to be honest it was really poor workmanship. is crooked and just wasn't built correctly, so this littlelip here will hide it, but now my friend Richard is here and I thank Richard because I couldn't have completed this project without him.
I tried. I hung the shelves myself and was doing everything he's doing here. I was measuring everything. I was using a level. He was marking things correctly and then I panicked and thought I wasn't going to be able to do it myself. My stud finder wasn't working and I was very nervous trying to touch the wall to see where the studs were and I was nervous because I wasn't going to measure correctly and then I would screw everything in and everything would be wrong when I went to put the shelves in so I called Richard and he came to help me and did a phenomenal job getting this here for me.
He really helped me bring my vision to life and I couldn't have done it 100% without him. The reason that backrest is higher than the other two is because of that little ledge we made and again it's just to cover those electrical outlets. and the hoses that you can see behind the washer and dryer are an eyesore and really took away from the space and potential of this space, so we'll just cover those, but don't worry, we definitely made sure. that the shelf came out far enough that there was no fire hazard from those electrical outlets and then we also screwed it in pretty lightly, we only used a few screws, but if we need to get back in there, we can pull the washer and dryer out. outside and we'll be able to access everything that way or we can just unscrew the little shelf on top and we'll be able to access it that way too, okay, here's the folding board and it's beautiful, thank you very much.
Richard, uh, we had some hiccups because there are hiccups in every project and I always try to share them with you, so we thought we had perfect measurements, but it barely fit, so it actually had to cut an eighth of an inch and we had to build it here like a whole process, so anyway, that's what happened and then you can see, let me show you, let me see if you can see it in the corner here, um, yeah, where we were trying. to fit it in and like the stain is marking the walls so I just wanted to show you guys I have this magic eraser and it comes right off so if you try to do this project and you have the same problems get a magic eraser. draft, but now we just have to hang the other two shelves and that's it, so hanging these shelves was about as complicated as trying to put up that little folding table, so here you'll see Richard using his level and tape measure and what we did was make sure that the lines were all level for where the shelves were going to go and that the spacing was even and then we knew where the holes needed to be for these brackets that we're using, so we also marked all of that that way, we were able to make sure we knew exactly where they needed to go and it was a much quicker process to put the shelves in, so it's always a lot of prep work, but as soon as luckily most of these could be put on a stud, there wasn't a single bracket where the three screws were not in a stud which made these shelves super secure which was really cool because using a 2 by 12 is a heavy piece of wood for anyone who is curious.
We used two inch screws to attach the brackets to the wall to make sure they were secure in the stud and then used quarter inch screws to screw in. the brackets on the actual shelf and we put in all the screws here that I'm showing you, but then when we do the one above, I'll show you how we had to remove some of them and put in some wall anchors now, like I said, each bracket had at minus one screw that was in a stud, which is what you want, you want it to be as secure as possible and obviously it would be ideal if all the screws could be in place. but that just wasn't happening with the way this thing was built, so we made sure that the ones that didn't hit a stud we took them out and then put a 75 pound anchor in and then screwed them back to that anchor to make sure that we kept everything as safe as possible.
I can't express how happy it made me to have this done. I've wanted to do this project for over a year and honestly I was really intimidated and didn't do it. I don't think anything I can do here will make me love this space, but now I totally love it, even seeing the images in this unfinished state, I'm still very much in love with it and very proud of what I was able to do. dream and create with the help of my husband and my friend, okay, here's an overview of everything before the decoration goes in and even something basic like this, I think it's so impressive that I'm ridiculously happy with this space, but Now it's time to start decorating and I'm going to try to keep my decor functional.
I'm big on functionality and sustainability, so I'm going to use some things I've had in this space before and really loved. and I worked well with what I had and then I'll start incorporating some new pieces and a new style and see what I come up with next. I bought most of these things at home, so I had things I already had. out there that wasn't being used or that I'm reusing here, but there are some new items, so if you want a full tour of this space and find out where each item came from and how much it cost, then I can see my Instagram stories every time I do one of these makeovers.
I always try to do a room tour on my Instagram stories that same day and then I'll save it to a featured section of the stories so you can come back and check it out in In case you want to create a space like this for yourself or if you just you want some good tips and tricks on how to do these things on a budget, I created this whole space for 73 dollars, I think it was less than a hundred. money for all this and I'm very proud of it and I really enjoy sharing those tips, tricks and little

ideas

on how you guys can renovate your own spaces on a super tight budget.
This was the first time I designed shelves this way. large or duplicate shelves, so I really tried to be careful to make sure everything was balanced in terms of shape, color and texture before moving on to the small folding table part. Now I knew right away that I wanted to use some greenery on that little shelf there and I also wanted to keep the rest pretty clear and really simple in any type of decor and also very functional just because I want to be able to use this folding table to fold my clothes as soon as possible. how did I arrive. outside of the dryer, I hope that having this space will give me more incentive to fold my clothes properly and then put them away.
I previously tried using a glass jar for my laundry soap and really enjoyed it, but it made a huge mess. So I was really excited when I found this pouring spout on Grove's collaborative website and it's working great, plus it goes with the aesthetic and is just a simple but clean piece of functional decor. I guess you could say I just really love it, I love the way it looks and I love the way it works, but now I'm just going to put the finishing touch on this space. I created these washer and dryer decals with my Cricut machine and was so excited to put them on. here on the front of my washer and dryer they are really simple but also really pretty and I honestly feel like they were the perfect finishing touch like I said this was the last piece of decor I was putting in here this was the finish . touch and then I was ready to show you some before shots just to remind you what this space was like before.
It definitely wasn't the worst space in the world, of course, but it wasn't the prettiest and it definitely was. It is not a space that generated me joy. I didn't enjoy being in this area using this space here and I just didn't like looking at it either. I always wanted the doors to close, but I turned it into something I love. and I can be proud and I'm so excited to reveal that to you guys, here it is, this is what my laundry closet looks like now and you guys, I made it, I'm so happy with it, I really brought my vision to life.
It's everything I thought it was going to be, it was everything I wanted and I'm so happy with it, it sounds so crazy but I think my laundry closet is now my favorite space in my entire house, okay that's it for today.
