DIY Dollar Tree/Walmart Desk or Dresser Hutch/Vanity

Feb 27, 2020
Welcome back to Kelly Barlow's creations that fail on a budget. Today's video is a kind of video request and it's not a request I received from any of you subscribers, it was a request I received from a very good friend of mine whose daughter just left. Her college trip stays in the dorms and she was looking for an organizer for her

desk

and she wanted this organizer to be a kind of

vanity

, a place where she could store her makeup or store school supplies if needed. She gave me her daughter's room color scheme and I can't wait to show you what I came up with for this

desk

vanity

mirror or school supplies storage, so let's get to it and let me show you everything I picked up for this project .

For this project, I picked up ten of Mini Crepes from Walmart that you can get for 88 cents each. I also bought two yards of this fabric from Walmart at 297 yards going to the Dollar Tree. I picked up 10 of these 4 by 6 frames, one 8 by 10 mirror, one 8 by 10 picture frame, a small display board, and two foam boards. I also purchased two of these LED lights, four of these gray desk pen holders, and eight of these clear acrylic makeup organizers. As I begin this project, I'm going to take five out of ten. plastic boxes and use my e6000. What I love about these mini boxes from Walmart is that they have these holes here that allow you to stack them, which is equivalent to putting six thousand here in the largest holes of each box to stack them and glue them together.

Together, taking my e6000, I'm using white because it won't show up in the larger hole. Here I'm going to put some e6000 in and there are two big holes in each box. I'm going to make my boxes play horizontally instead of vertically. When we put them together there is glue and the four. I'm going to stack these four high, now taking the fifth box, I'm going to turn it vertically, taking my spring clamp, all just these first two together. I'm going to repeat this. process with the other five boxes and I'm going to leave this out to dry so the epoxy can cure well so I have both sets of five boxes ready and I should have explained to you that on this side of the box of the second five boxes that you were putting together, the box had to be on this side of the top, praise, not the other side, which allowed us to join them both here in the middle.

I also want to tell you that I went back and ended up using gorilla glue instead. of the e6000 I actually liked this one a lot better because when you put it in the hole here on the side of the case, it actually expands when it dries, which gives it an incredible hold. The e6000 wasn't working so I went ahead and used Gorilla Glue and it works perfectly. You can see here that my boxes are nice and attached, they are very tight. Now I'm going to take and join these two boxes together like this using the gorilla glue that gives us this U-shaped unit now.

I'm going to take the two pieces of cardboard from my phone and I'm going to tape them together. I'm using packing tape. You can use any tape if you have it on hand. Now take the critical unit I just put in. Together I'm going to place it on top of the foam board, then taking a pencil I'm going to trace the bottom and outside edges of this box on the foam board, now taking a ruler and a utility knife I'm going to cut along the length. the line I just drew would be my ruler as a man, so I have a nice clean straight cut, leaving me with a piece of cardboard that will give me a Simonton vacuum cleaner unit.
Now picking up the fabrics I bought at Walmart. and cut a piece a little larger than the foam board I chose now using Kryon spray adhesive. I'm going to spray the wrong side of my fabric and cover one side of this foam board now using my weird a6000 glue. I'm going to take and trace the outline of each crepe on the back of them. I put e6000 on the back of my ten mini crepes. Now I'm going to turn them over and place them on the cards that are covered with fabric. I'm happy with where I put it now I'm going to set it aside and let it dry for the next part of the project.
Let's cut out some pieces of our little display board that I've cut ten pieces of the display board to the measurement of five and five eight five seven and three quarters. Now taking my fabric, I cut it a little bigger than my piece of cardboard and I'm going to cover my cardboard with it. I'm using spray krylon on the cardboard for this part of the project. If you want to use your hot glue gun, you can use that too. Next, I took and cut two more pieces of my triple display board and measured them at 22 inches. long by 5 and 3/4 wide and they were two pieces.
I went ahead and covered them completely front and back as neatly as possible and my last cut of the triple board measures 17 and a half long by 5 and 3 /4 wide and that was just one piece that I also covered with the fabric on the front and behind. Now let me show you why I specifically chose these four by six frames for this project for this desktop unit that I'm going to use. just the last part of these frames when choosing these frames I was looking for a specific size of glass and I wanted the glass to fit the cardboard pieces that I cut that measure 7 and 3/4 by 5 and 5./8 these were the only ones two frames that came with glass that specifically fit the measurements needed for these cube holders and as for the frames, I'm not going to throw them away just yet, I'll set them aside and put them away. and I'll see if there's anything I can think of to use them now taking the mirror, I'm going to turn it around and I'm going to take this mirror out of its frame because I'm not very excited about the frame itself.
Here are mirrors that Dollar Tree carries that are framed with this silver and black frame, an 8 by 10 frame, now taking this 8 by 10 frame that I loved the frame in and now I'm going to take and place my mirror here . I'm going to use the backrest that comes with the model because I don't need the supports for this frame. In fact, I'm going to save this stand that I'll use in a future project and see how pretty it is. It's just what I was looking for so now I'm going to take the 10 pieces that I wrapped in cardboard and the black one and I'm going to place them in each mini cubicle behind my boss putting these in each cubicle we're so you weren't limited as to what you can put in the cubicle, you have a nice solid flat surface, so the only limitation you really have is the height and the items you put in here are the items you put in here.
I'm talking behind the glass. Also, if you store the awakening here, this will make it easier to clean and won't ruin the fabric cardboard, and you can easily grab some Windex and clean it up by taking the last three. pieces of cardboard. I did this just because I didn't want it to look unfinished. I'm going to place them right along the sides here of the fold. I'm just going to take them and hot glue them on both sides and one on the. up and place the hot glue in the same holes that I use to attach each box to each other.
Now I take the mirror I'm going to take and hot glue it to the board. I also picked up two Abdullahs here. LED

tree

push lights I'm going to cut with glue on the top here and it's as simple as just push the light and add lights to this unit and with these push lights you can feel very easily just twist the white part and it will come . below and you can replace the battery now let's add all the fun things I bought for this and there you have it everyone, my desk organizer for makeup or school supplies for a college dorm or just a

dresser

in your dorm room, this came out like this incredibly stinky and cute , I love it and I think my friend's daughter will love this and I'm so excited to give it to her.
We also made one for Kayla with the mini aqua box. Kayla didn't want the backup, you see. there's her curtain so if I open it you'll see that she wanted to cover just the sides and the back covered so when you look back you see this and she's using this not for her makeup but for her desk and her school supplies. to organize your desk a little better and I added LED push light so you would have a desk light, well that's all I have for you for today for this DIY Dollar Tree Walmart Crepe Desk or Vanity Organizer , the only items that work with Dollar Tree.
The supplies for this project were crepes and fabric, and you can get crepes at Dollar Tree.
