DIY BACKYARD MAKEOVER | OUTDOOR PATIO TRANSFORMATION

makeover

. You guys will be joining me in her

backyard

right now in the city of Toronto, so there may be some extra noise on some planes. some train some birds some insects so don't worry, do you hear that's a mistake anyway? I'm here for the weekend to take over the backyard and turn it into a beautiful, stylish

outdoor

oasis. I want to turn this backyard into a little Resort, I want it to feel like you're in a backyard, like you're on vacation in your own space, especially since you can't travel right now.

Turning your backyard into an amazing getaway is the perfect option, so that's what we do. What we're going to do today, as you can see, their backyard space is already very nice, they have some old furniture in here that doesn't really work with the space, but the overall design of the backyard is amazing, we have a top deck, a

patio

bottom and me. I'm planning to turn those areas into two different spaces, so we'll have a living room area and a dining area. We'll create some privacy here and make it feel really intimate and cozy. They don't really use it very often. right now because there really is nowhere to sit, so we're going to solve that problem, bring in some amazing

outdoor

furniture and really make this outdoor space feel like an extension of your home.

We have a lot of work to do here, so let's get started. this

I want to make a dining area here while keeping this walkway open downward. so you can get in and out smoothly and then turn this little nook into a kind of cozy coffee nook, maybe decorate this fence here on the stone

I want to create an intimate living room, like a small family room. with a fire pit, some lighting across the width and then on the top deck I want to create some sort of umbrella roof to really create some privacy so like any other makeover I'm heading to Pinterest and I collect some ideas that I really like.

Look at these black and white backyards, I think they look really young, fresh and fresh, so I came up with this mood board that I'm obsessed with. I love this design idea and this is the direction we are heading in so hopefully in the end. From that, the backyard looks like this, the first thing is to clean everything so that it is ready to go. The first must-have item in this backyard space is outdoor rugs, if you are doing any type of backyard balcony space, bring some. outdoor rugs, I chose three different ones because we have a lot of space to fill here.

I bought two with amazing designs from Homesense for 29 each, which is an incredible price, and then this big black one that I wanted to use for layering. here in the dining room area I wanted to put the huge black rug just to really connect the space and make it feel cozy and, you know, anchor all the furniture like you would with an indoor dining room because this black rug was so simple. I thought I'd layer white and beige on top, it really adds a great texture and pattern to this dining area and who says you can't put down outdoor rugs?

Yes, it looks so cool now on my favorite part of outdoor furniture. I teamed up with my friends at Article to team up on this project and create a beautiful space with their amazing furniture. I wanted to do something like that. There is a combination of chairs here to make it look casual and very stylish, so I decided to buy another set of tuli chairs, but these ones have no arms and are white and taupe, so I think they are great for side chairs like this one. They also have a curved backrest and seat, so extremely comfortable, matching the blacks with the natural rattan frame, but giving a different contrast, so I really like the look of this combo set. This is the dining room table, let's take a look at it, oh my goodness. oh that's going to be so cute wow oh that's cute that's awesome one of the prettiest backyards ever.

Is incredible. This table was the perfect piece for this dining set. It is very heavy but of very good quality and looks incredible. It is made of galvanized steel. It's really durable, perfect for outdoors, it won't be blown away by the wind or anything. It has an elegant matte black powder finish. It looks like an indoor piece, but it's for outdoors and I think it's absolutely stunning with those beautiful legs. Wow, here on the side. I wanted to keep this type of open picnic style to make it look casual but put together, so I added this beautiful bench.

I think it's stunning and perfect for this space here in this corner. I wanted to give it a friendly style. It's like a little coffee nook, a comfortable place to sit, so I'm using these Aura basket chairs in slate gray and they have these amazing solid acacia wood legs. It is durable, has removable cushions that are water resistant, so they are great for being outdoors. and it has waterproof wicker, so overall it's a perfect outdoor chair that looks like an indoor one and is so stylish that it makes this small area really functional. I'm going to bring the Nevo side table, which is a 20 inch side table, it's the right one.

The size is just the right height, it's perfect for this small area, it has these nice tapered legs, so it looks very mid-century modern. It's made from unadorned acacia wood, so it's super durable and, again, perfect for being outside now that I have all the furniture. Installed on this upper deck, we will move to the patio below and establish a cozy little living space. I'm so glad I can get my hands on all of these things before summer is over. I'm sorry. Bye bye. Today we are going to add some shade to this backyard. A little privacy. Bring some accessories. Some plants. DIY projects we still have a lot to do so we really wanted to create some privacy here because we have some rooftop patios on either side so we really want to cover this area and shade it so a large cantilevered umbrella is a great solution, I'm going to bring one and it's a 10 foot umbrella, so it's going to pretty much cover this entire top deck and that's really going to keep this whole dining area clean, keep it dry and cover this whole area from the sun, so the umbrella It holds up perfectly without weights when going up and down like that, but once you open it it really starts to fall off, so you need some kind of weights.

I'm using these pavers that were actually from my house, so I brought them here, we'll put them on this side of the umbrella so they'll really weigh it down and that will definitely secure it, so if you have extra papers like that, you can use them instead of buying a full umbrella weight, the only one. What's happening now is that the stand is sticking out and it's in the middle of everything, so I'm going to use this piece of furniture to try to hide it and reconfigure everything around here. I think I brought this little utility cart from Ikea.

It would be really cool when you're barbecuing or putting out food and you can create a little center here and you can also move it around the deck because it has wheels so it's a nice little touch you can add. your backyard to make it a little more entertaining friendly. In fact, I'm going to go to Home Depot right now and see if I can find some flowers for these pots because that would make a really pretty backdrop here, I think in every direction you face. The skin should look pretty, so I'll try to make it even prettier, add some color, and see what we can find.

There wasn't too much variety to choose from when we were looking for plants because it's already late summer, but I found these beautiful, huge hibiscus plants, as well as these kind of Hawaiian looking tropical plants, so I got as many as I could to try to fill these pots. and then I realized that this area of ​​the backyard doesn't really get a lot of sun and I think these flowers need sun so I thought I'd go to the dollar store and buy some artificial plants that will really bring a lot more color to the space from the garden, so I chose artificial flowers with similar colors to the real ones and I'm just sticking them in the ground and I swear you would never know they were fake, it adds a lot more color, a lot more variety and levels, and I think it makes it look much better, so if you are struggling with your garden. or you want to add a little color, just pick up some artificial flowers, place them in the ground and you won't be able to tell the difference to balance the greenery, really bring this space to life.

I'm adding these hanging ferns. Ferns are really affordable and they add a lot of color so they are very easy to hang on the fence, hang on any wall that you have in your backyard and it brings life to the space so I'm doing the same thing here in the living room to be. space, I wanted to add a nice little backdrop to the couch area so I'm adding three in there and it adds a ton of color and life to the space. Well, the plan was to have a big fire table right here. the middle one and my sister already has one, but this is the current state.

I don't know what happened here if water got in, but it's in very bad condition and I'm not willing to part with it, so here we are. I'm going to bring this back to life, hopefully try to fill all these edges with concrete, resurface it a little, and then paint it black. It'll be amazing if I can pull it off so I went to Lowe's and picked up this quick box and that's it. Hopefully, I'll smooth out the surface. I also took a little palette, that's what it's called, yeah, palette and then I'm going to paint it using this high heat glaze.

I bought it in matte black so I think it will really show through. cute and then I'll roll it with my little foam roller. I'm just cleaning up all the debris that came loose and took the table apart to try to get all the loose pieces out so I can fill it all up. With the quikrete, I later realized that I could have done the entire top in quikrete, but I was just filling in all the holes and areas that fell apart, so it's up to you how you want to do it if you're dealing with a problem similar to this.

This is what it looked like when I finished. I filledsome of the corners to make sure they were flat too and then I let it sit overnight. That way I knew it was totally dry and I could sand it all down to try to do it. as flat as possible again, this table is not going to turn out absolutely perfect, but it will definitely be an improvement from what it looks like now, so this is what the fire pit looks like now, all painted, you know, it doesn't look perfect, I know. but it's a complete makeover compared to this, so this will definitely have to do.

It's definitely an improvement and just a small way to give it a second life. Okay, I ran into some difficulties with this fire pit. I can't get it. I don't know what's going on, I have a new propane tank hooked up and it won't turn on so I'm hoping I can figure something out and get started because I really want it on for the big reveal. Lighting is probably my favorite part of any outdoor space it always brings it to life so I'm adding some twinkle lights over the living space here and then placing some LED candles throughout the space inside the lanterns it will really set the mood and make making it look really cozy, intimate and warm, as you can see all the fences are at different heights so I decided to hang my lights from the top fence of this shed here and there, conveniently, there was a socket so it worked really well for me.

I bought some of these from Ikea, some from Homesense and then I found them all. these battery candles that have timers so you don't have to run around and turn them off are all super cute and totally match the vibe, well we're at the finish line here, just like all my indoor makeovers we are at ending. This is solved by styling this space by bringing in outdoor pillows, little decor pieces, all the special little things that make it feel perfect, so let's bring them here and show them the big reveal, oh my gosh, Christian, cute as a little word, this umbrella is blowing me. away look how big it is wow that's privacy this is great oh my gosh look at the fire table like that oh it looks like that kind of clay with a little bit of milk and I love these oh my gosh now you have a whole dining room the whole living room and Then Rachel, this is your coffee corner, yes, and they are comfortable, like everything is very spacious.
