planter

into this very rustic antique looking

stone

planter

. These pots are so trendy right now that we are seeing them everywhere. So I wanted to DIY and show you how to get the look for less, so I went to Home Depot and found this planter. It really caught my attention. I really liked the shape and simplicity of this one. It's very, very heavy. I think it's a ceramic and very, very simple, I like that it's really very clean.

I feel like the price was pretty good for 44. I could probably do this whole DIY for under 50. So since it's the middle of winter right now, it's really cold outside I put some towels in my living room and I was going to do this DIY It's too cold inside, the mortar would literally take days to dry outside, so I laid out some old towels and planned to do this inside. So the plan here is to cover this entire pot with mortar, which is actually a lot like concrete, usually used to adhere tiles, but it acts the same as concrete, so I bought my mortar at Home Depot, they sell it in white and also gray.

I went with the gray but then decided to change my mind with the white. They also make it premixed, but it can be expensive, so I'm mixing my own. This bag of gray cost about five dollars and is very simple, just add the mortar. an old bucket and add some water, you can use a drill with the little swivel attachment, I don't know what it's called, with the little attachment it goes right into the drill, it's very, very simple, or you can mix it by hand, the drill just Help, I think the drill is a little more fun to use, but that's just my opinion, so in the mortar I'm going to mix my water and you want it to be a thick consistency like a smoothie, it's very, very

easy

to make. the drill wasn't quite there in all the corners, so I ended up finishing it by hand.

This one was gray and I did the first two layers with gray and then I did the last two layers with white so that the white I ended up changing the color at the end but it's really a preference, what color you want to do is completely up to you so you're going to start using a trowel or a spreader whatever you want to call it and literally just spread it. in the first coat it will be very smudged, but it doesn't really matter, everything will be covered anyway, so do your best and cover as much as you can with the first coat also if you notice that the mortar is like a very dark gray to As it dries, it dries very, very clear.

I'll show you here in a second and the white is pretty much the same, it goes on as a little bit of a tinted white and then as it dries it dries more. a brighter white too, this is what it looks like when it starts to dry and I noticed when I was doing this inside I put the little heater on to speed up the process. I'm very impatient, so the little heater. In fact, it really helped a lot in drying it very quickly. The first layer has many stains. I'm just going to warn you that this looks like a mess, but also between the layers I would put a piece of plastic wrap and covered it all with duct tape and then put the bucket outside in the cold.
I'm not too sure if that helps, but I felt like it preserved the mortar. You don't want it to harden, so the first coat is officially done. dry, it's much lighter than it was as you can see the difference and the second coat is applied here. It's very, very simple to do. I was a little nervous about doing this in the living room, but it actually wasn't bad. all the mess was left on the towels and those towels were old anyway so we were able to throw them away when we were done so now that the second layer is dry this is the third layer drying and as you can see the bottom has that edge on it, so I couldn't really get to the bottom, so once it's completely dry, I'm going to flip everything over and work on the bottom to work on the bottom.
I turned everything over and then I took those little pieces of rock gravel that weren't attached very well, alright, I took off the loose pieces and tapped them with my hands and then I started applying the mortar in there, now you don't want to put them. your mortar on your base you want to make sure everything is really flush so it doesn't make your pot not level or something if you know what I mean you don't want to go over that kind of line if that makes sense using my spreader too I tried to make it blend really well with the rest of the pot and I'm going to show you a little trick that works really well to get all those lines really smooth and you can do this all over the pot and all over the bottom so you take a little bit of water like a tupperware or a cup or something and you just spread out the lines and it will smooth everything out once we're done with the mortar.
I'm going to take some of this moss. You can get this at any local craft store and I'm going to put it in my little blender or magic bullet that we have and I'm going to blend this very, very well so that it's almost like a fine powder and this is what We're going to give our pot a little texture and definition. It will really add a little more interest to that pot. This will also give you that

aged

or found look. There seems to be moss growing on the side and it's really pretty. trick, I didn't really use much, I liked it a lot, maybe a bowl full, it was probably no more than a cup and a half or two cups, maybe as much, so I took a little more mortar and this is the white mortar, by the way, I took some white mortar and mixed it with some soil, I just added some soil to add a little texture and then I have my moss ready and for this last layer I'm just going to smooth this mortar mixture white and dirt and then once the mortar is still wet I'm going to continue with my moss and I'm going to sprinkle this on the outside after I sprinkle the moss I'm going to take a rubber hand or glove whatever works best for you and just give it pat it down and really make sure the moss sticks there and this is the fun part because it's all just preference on how much mortar you want if you want it really thick if you want it really patchy and sparse you can really do whatever you want if you want that everything is covered so it doesn't have that patchy look, you can really do whatever you want, but I like this body, it looks like this.
It looks really

aged

and neat, so I'm going to move this pot outside and using my Rust-oleum spray matte clear coat, I'm going to clear coat all of that moss and this clear coat really darkens that white as well. which I kind of liked, the white mortar dries very bright so I wanted something to reduce that bright white and once everything was completely dry and ready to bring in, we brought this pot and I plan to put my olive tree in here and we just have a fake olive, so it is very light. I will link this one exactly on Amazon.
I put a cardboard box in there to give it a little more height and then filled it with all these recyclable bags to add a little bit. of support and fill, so the plan here is to top this pot with the bags inside and then put moss all over the top, so I like to use this moss sheet for my pots just for the top, it's very economical and just Finish that top off, so I'm going to cut the shape about the size of my planter at the top and then I'm going to cut off the excess, so I'm going to make a slit right at the top so I can wrap it around my tree . and then just cut off the excess that doesn't fit and tuck it all in to finish it off and give it that pretty mossy look, after a bit of adjusting, folding and moving it will finally look how I want it to look. and I think this planter turned out so beautiful it has that rustic aged

stone

planter look that I'm seeing everywhere right now and it looks so pretty with this rug.
I am very very happy with the result and I still can't believe it came from that very modern white pot, it is a great transformation and there is no denying that it is a big difference, so I really love how it turned out and I hope this has inspired to try a new DIY or something on a smaller scale if you're not up for the big pot, it was a really fun DIY to make and even more fun to see in my living room every day and something I can enjoy, Thank you all very much for watching.
