We'll do great with your custom job so I'll put That information is there and hope

full

y everyone can learn together so let's go ahead and get started right so Bowie is ready to mix the sealant and we have a lot of questions. Brian, how do I make my sealer and clear base? Well you should check your technical data sheets because on those sheets it will tell the manufacturer how they want you to mix it, so for this particular bori it mixes well, he knows because it will say it on the side of the can or on a sheet technique. data sheet so you can go to a paint manufacturer and they'll tell you it says it right there, yeah, even better, okay, so what you're going to do from that point on is get one of these glasses and it doesn't matter what brand be all.

They have the same proportions on the sides here, so if you look here we have one, two, one, one and a half, one, two, seventy. I don't see that often, two to one, and so on, so here. We've found four to one to ten to one, well that's a little confusing, we're looking for four to one to one, don't worry, the first one we'll mix, we'll do a

full

amount here, so the highest one. we can go up to 6, so we'll find 6 and fill it with sealant, then our next product will be our hardener, so we'll move on to the next six now we're not worried about the 10%. which is right here, so we'll ignore it completely and move on to the next six, which will probably be our reducer.
car painting full car paintjob guide
Well, I'll show you right now. Well, as you can see, we have four to one. for one ignore that 10%, so we increased it to our first six now you have a leaner net hardener for the next six, the only component, it's okay and if you overdo it a little bit it's okay, but it made a perfect pour now. ignore that 10% and now we'll move on to the next one which will be our reducer to the final six and then we have a properly mixed sealant according to the technical data sheet and the mixing ratio so you ask me all.
When can I just put the foundation there? I guess of course you can, but you'll be there all day spraying foundation. Now what a sealer is going to do, it's going to take all of these colors and turn them into one that we have. we have primer, we have stripe and red blue clear coat, we have more primer, we are going to put gray sealer all over this car, now some of you might think well, why are they putting a different color on it? It sounds like We're working backwards and while that might make sense to you, what I'm going to show you in a moment is that blue or any other color will cover 100 times easier if it has a solid, even base.
Talk about dirt, you say Brian, I have dirt all over my clear coat, but you didn't know the dirt was there the whole time, it only shows up on your clear coat, so your sealant is your most important part, make sure you address it all. All over the car we're going to use a new tack cloth, we're going to start from the top down and then we're going to start spraying our sealant from the front of the car moving to the back, which I'm going to use. I'll show you in a moment. Okay, so before we get the sealant, let's attack the car from the front.
Now we have our intake where the air comes in from this side, we have our exhausts on the other side, so when we paint this car. When we clean this car, we're always going to start from the beginning at the front and work our way to the back so that all the exhaust and all the paint and overspray would carry over to the entire car if we were to paint from the back, okay? and we moved forward as we were

painting

the front, all of the overspray would get on our new paint and it would come down dry and it would look really bad and that's actually good advice for a lot of you so when we go to clean up, we're actually going to Let's get started for the beginning, we're going to go ahead and wet it and then we're going to clean in one direction the entire car, removing all those contaminants and this is very important, you should have already washed the car with a degreaser. of some kind and they will come here with their solvent and then their water-based cleaners.
Now many of you might be confused because sometimes you go to Walmart, your local hardware store, and get just your usual product. plastic and that's going to get you in trouble, see plastics don't treat it, so when you go ahead and paint it and that paint dries and we're going to spray your baby, so you're clear what will end up happening is that it will it will chip you need a plastic which is an automotive primer meant for

painting

cars and it will have on one side that will say paint this side okay and that is the side that will be on the outside and that side is actually treated so it actually it holds the overspray so you'll never get in trouble and there's no need to put paper up to the edge, it's all plastic, in my opinion, a cleaner job, much faster, okay, so we have Bodie, it's ready to spray, has the light on and I really like it.
How are you liking it so far? Pretty good, yeah, so he's going to start keeping a wet edge, so what we're going to do is start on one side, we're going to move all the way to the end, okay, hold it. nice and smooth, so he'll do the bottom of the door, then he'll take it to the center of the roof and then I'll take it there and move it to the other side so it holds about 16 psi. On the dv1 you can't apply that pressure to any other gun and it maintains a wet edge with about 75% overlap.
You can actually see where you are spraying with that light. It's really good, make sure those layers are wet, we already removed them. the car and it stays wet with nice even coats, if you were to spray this dry, that would introduce dirt because that would be grit in the paint, so as you can see, that's a great job, you've gotten that sealant so far. I'm going to continue that wet edge that you have up to here. I'm going to go over to the other side, bring it in and tie down the rest of the car so we can keep it nice and smooth so we have our sealant coat. and a lot of guys ask Brian if I need to clean my paint layer between coats.
Now let's say you need to put one more coat of sealant. Well, you'd just leave the caulk and gun on, but we're good to go. base coat so we're going to use this old cup right here and Eastwood has this great spray and jet for cleaning and this is really good for the medium or even if you really want to completely clean your gun, it has a nice nozzle on there and what you would do is to inject it from here, but what I like to do is remove all the paint first because then I'm going to move too much paint with the cleaner and I want to clean as much as I can beforehand now look at this, we'll go ahead and pass this over here for the part from the back, we'll clean it up and she's ready to go like this between layers, okay, so we've got just what I want, we've got the entire vehicle in one color and we'll use the exact same gun.
I know many of you don't want to buy a gun for a sealant and clear primer, so we have many options on the market. I recommend W 400 I even recommend a CC 500 that we are using here works phenomenal also the GTI pro light all excellent guns for less than three hundred and fifty dollars that will do everything, you buy it once, good quality and if I am looking at this gun, I really like it remember Iwata, so what we're going to do from here is we're going to allow the sealer to flash, give it about half an hour, and then all those things come out.
You must make sure that it is very dry and then. We're going to apply our first coat of base, evaluate it and see if we need to remove any of the bits of dirt so that at the end when we spray our clear, we have a good finish, so Boney is mixing. we lift up the base layer, so on this one it says two to one, you see it right there, so we go ahead and find two to one in our actual cup and here we have two to one, we ignore the 10, the 22, all that and we What we're going to do is fill it up to the highest amount and then the next highest amount, and what I've done here is mark them up so you can see exactly what we're doing. that first one goes up to the first place, okay, the job and now the next one from the reducer will go up to the next number, perfect, ready to spray the base, okay, so we're ready for the base, let's put that on first. base layer we are not going to be very wet, but rather half wet, if we get very wet, sometimes we can get a little contaminated even though the sealers are down, so let's introduce that base into the sealer, let that marriage occur, but we don't want to. land too dry if we let it dry again, roughness will mean roughness that will show and you're clear that every layer matters, now we're going to attack it the same way and Bodie has a good question for me.
Like Brian, why can't I paint the whole side first? And I said, well, where we have to move completely and do the whole panel because keeping that wet edge on a horizontal flat panel is more important than keeping that wet edge. on a side panel, so we'll move all the way around once again, it's going to connect at the top of the roof. This will keep things nice and moist if Bodie went ahead and did the whole side and then we painted the hood. remember that overspray will stop on freshly painted panels, it will fall dry and look pretty and that's not what we want, let's go ahead and spray some primer now, we just applied the first coat of primer, now we don't we became too humid.
For one reason, now I'm going to teach you a tip right here to get smoother, cleaner paint jobs. We have 3m soft pad interface pad and this one is new. Now you don't need a new one, but a clean one. one will help you a lot so make sure you remove it and then we have here a piece of 600 grit sandpaper and what will do this interface pad is a little bit spongy which will give me some cushioning so I'm not going to nail my nails or fingers on the surface and I'll just run this over the entire surface and that will really smooth out the surface.
Any debris that has fallen from the beginning to this point will be smooth and I'll show you what it looks like once we go ahead and sand it lightly, we're not actually digging into it and what you'll start to notice is that the top of the dirt It's actually there all the time, but you didn't even notice. It's now that you see it because it's exposed, the whole car has been scratched with those six hundred and Bodis got the rag from him like he clicked on the debris. Now this is a travel car, so yes, it has to look good, but a hundred. percent perfect, no, not at all, every build is different, that's not an excuse for us to do less work, but the fact of the matter is that in the first competition, the first time you go out with this car, you could screw it up and we Just know that to make sure we're perfectly perfect, we're not going to do a concours restoration, we just want to do a good clean job and I think we're doing exactly that, yeah, let me talk about it real quick.
What I was talking about with these little dust spikes now, if we focus right here, we can see in this area that we have like a little dust spike and if we zoom in over here, it was a dust spike and across the entire hood. powder nib and what we've done is cut it, smoothed out any kind of overspray. Normally you wouldn't do this, but overall it will help you a lot. I'm going to have a softer tip. Finished last, so from here we'll apply it with about two more coats of base and then we'll see how it looks and see if it's cleaning up.
Yes, we are ready to pass the layer. Now we have been using an Eastwood 500 cc, a very good gun that does it all. We also had a DV. You will find a fan alittle bigger here. You will find one a little smaller, but they both spray very well. I'm going to go ahead and finish it off with a DV one just to show you that you can use a variety of different guns, when you come to paint a car, okay, with that protective coat, we'll divide the car into sections, remember that through all of this we should use a slow reducer, remember that slower will give us a smooth and pleasant finish.
I'm going to spray the entire front about 4 to 5 inches and then while it's still wet I'll extend my distance to about 10 to 12 inches, if I sprayed regularly about 10 to 12 inches I would land dry but now since the base it's still drying, we're spraying it's going to fall smooth and that further distance will help us with our streak layers, it helps with the streaks, especially cheaper paint, okay, so we'll show you that on the drip layer right now. the front is fine so the paints are still wet right away. You can drop a couple pounds if we want, we're going to increase our distance, but we don't have the right overlap.
That means that the spaces in our pattern, those spaces are dry points. those dry spots are scratches so now we have everything good let's continue with the rest of the car so we have Astro who came forward and gave us our solar light and this light is a fraction of the cost of the 3m solar gun . and what this will do is it may expose any streaks or areas that need more attention now in order to use this light you will need to turn off the main lights in the store and once you have this light on it will emulate the sun's rays so What might look good here won't look good when the sun shines brightly on your new paint job and man, it can be discouraging.
I'm taking the car out for the first time and seeing streaks, so what we're looking for with the light is we're looking for any type of streaks, we're looking for uniformity and we're also looking to see if we have coverage and the light will expose any of the defects so it can come back. . and fix them at this particular point, you can actually see all the metal flakes coming out of the surface like the Sun, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go around the whole car, I'm going to take a look and based on this, there are a couple of points that I want to fix off camera so I'll fix them and then we'll be ready for the clear coat so Bodie is mixing the clear coat and while you're mixing it we'll go ahead and talk.
Very quick about the process. You've been following the same process throughout the video and throughout the car. We start at the front. We have worked until the end. They continued to the door and back. Turn it around and finish the rest of the car. We'll keep a wet edge and it's very essential at this point if it's clear, has a nice shiny finish. Now our first layer that is applied doesn't need to be completely wet, it doesn't need to be. to be beautiful it's not going to be beautiful we want to put the paint there we want to connect the dots make sure we don't have too many dry spots because if we try to do everything we can with that first layer what's going to happen is we're going to have some runs now once it adheres that second layer will heat it up we can go a little bit harder with it and we can really dial it in and smooth it out now I'm going to use a cc 500 for this I'll put it to the test.
I haven't really used it on a large surface, of course. I like to open it all the way and fan it out. We'll push it between 28 and 29, maybe 30 psi, to see what works. After overpasses of about 85% with clear, we want narrow overpasses so that it smooths out well. We now had two options when it came to our hardener. Now those two options will be our fast hardener and our slow hardener. We are wrapping around 85 degrees here in the booth and there is absolutely no reason for us to use the fast hardener, a slow hardener will keep those solvents open longer, allow it to soften and flow, actually after we paint it and you will see like much better and we would have better retention now if we were doing a much smaller job like a fender or maybe we were spraying in colder weather then we would use our fast slow it would be too slow so know your temperature not your paint , and make the right decision.
Enough said, let's get down the forty feet clear, it's crazy super beautiful coat, it looks stunning. Now we're going to wait a good 10 to 15 minutes and a good way to check if it's ready is if we touch an area like not the panel but a piece of tape and it's a little bit sticky, so it's ready if it's stringy. I don't really want to go, but to be honest with you, it's been about 15 minutes since we set up this first set. of a clear coat on the front of the car and I must say I'm ready to do the second one so I'm ready to have some fun hit you on the head look at the past 85% will go a little slower. the second coat really smoothed it out and set it.
Bing should look beautiful when everything is right, so there you have it guys, we took this entire Miata from five different colors to one solid color and I have to say it looks pretty good. I really hope that today you learned some tips and tricks on how to paint your car and just remember that it won't turn out perfect if you try to chase perfection. We will be behind. Is it that perfect? No, no, but it can. It can be polished and it can be polished and it can be 100 percent and guys don't get discouraged if it doesn't look good from the start, it's all about learning and every step here is about getting better now as far as Bodie goes. and her channel has a completely different video and a lot of things I talked about in my video aren't in yours, now we're getting a little more technical about what exactly it is, yeah, well in my video I wanted to break it down for you.
Guys, I wanted to explain and show you the process of how we get a job like this without using a booth. I know many of you from the Paint Society, you see a lot of paint that is in the booth and everything looks good. but this looks good too yes it's perfect no yes but it looks good it will be ok if we want to polish out a couple of imperfections and yes we can and I will but for what we have it looks good yes and you already know. all about the guys saying: you know Brian I don't have a stand, I don't have this, well this is not a stand, we did it on your channel, check out the video it's really good and also check out the construction because this is not the first video in another series of this build, so yeah the link will be in the description below all the videos for this, all the videos for all my other stuff, we're putting a v8 in a Honda Accord, that's awesome, amazing, well, and then when we paint, maybe you come with the Cardinal, you know what we'll see what happens, but as for this job it's already done, we'll let you check it out in a minute, thanks for letting me come up and I have to remind you guys , don't think about it too much, it's just a man, take a look at it.
