Buying the Cheapest Model S 100D then Blasting Across the Country (Very Cold!)

Jun 05, 2021
Small superchargers are version one. Oh no, maybe it's over. I wanted to go see it here, but it seems like it's inside, like a parking lot. Anyway, you're pretty deep there. We're still in a hurry to see if we can get to New Hampshire for this flight. If the charging profiles are like this, I don't feel

very

confident, but we'll see, but I don't think it's time to go check out this strange supercharger, but we'll come back at some point. I'm sure we're getting loaded. in Rockford, Illinois, let's see what kind of loading rate we're getting.

I think we're down to 10% or so, yeah, 12% 60, is it increasing? I'll keep an eye on it so we switch and We're getting the same thing which means that's the acceleration point so since it's not a supercharger thing it's the car at this point so yeah I just have to get used to these hundreds of packages. Again, e

very

thing changes all the time, what am I trying to do? Take it out of range mode in case you need to run the battery heater. I'm sure it will work. Wow, super charge, but let's let this go up so we've gone up to 117. kilowatts and it's like sitting here and I just checked this is a hundred and fifty kilowatt supercharger, although it's an older supercharger so it could be that it's just those, because they used to be versions, only those could be version two, so let's go there.

And look, I've seen a couple of installations like this. I'm not sure if that's the case here, but I do know that they always show the highest power level available, not what each stall will give you because this largely follows a version one load. curve so let's shift and see what we get so this would be what I would say is the main bank because there's kind of a gap here and I think this might be new it's just the theory let's see if I'm right, so I'm going to say that I'm not right and that's where the car wants to charge Soho, okay, I'll stop shifting, we'll stay here, it's not bad speed at all, one hundred and eighteen kilowatts, that's pretty good, and we will do it.

Go on now, the car wants to go through Canada like I mentioned so it would take this route through here but I forced it to this supercharger which is in South Bend Indiana and a town called Mishawaka which is a great name so we're going to take the South route comes by blah blah blah and mosey on our way. I was sitting charging over there when we had just moved for the third time and I thought, well, everything is lined up differently except a and B because a and B are next to each other and all of these go 1 2 3 to 1 2 3 B, like this that I moved on a4 and yes this is the one hundred and fifty kilowatts so I was right I just chose the wrong position there and that guy from Tesla That understands you because they only need to put a 150 kilowatt cabinet with two posts and it says that all the stations are there so it's just the two new facilities behind us for A and B that are 150 kilowatts and we just lost all that time because So it looks like we're getting better charging here 100 kilowatts at about 50%, which sounds like maybe it's okay, maybe I'm just getting used to this man.

I miss the Tesla charging curves of the old days, so let's figure out our way. Don't know. I think it makes sense to sit here for 25 minutes since we're already pretty tapered, so let's see if we pass by some chargers on the way, so this one was probably too close plus I saw it get very crowded. We're not going to go through there, let's see that this one seems to be not far from 150 kilowatts. We were going to go there anyway before, so let's take a look. You can see it well. We'll get there at 11 percent, which means we can take advantage of pretty good speeds. because it seemed to have gone up about 15 percent before at 95 kilowatts, so I'm just going to throw a couple of things that trash can throw into the car and

then

we'll go, what's your name?
The first time you see a Tesla it is not very good, but is it the first time you see it charging and everything is very good? Well, it's nice of you to stop by and check in and I hope you have a good day. Thanks for visiting us. and there go future Tesla owners, they were so cool the kid was so excited. Hunter yelled at him that it was amazing. We loaded more than necessary because he was showing her the car. It didn't take long. I think we are. Still, we're doing well, we just hook up here, basically, a little bit south of Chicago.
I forgot the exact name. Not a bad supercharger. Lots of people here. Many people. I mean, there are only four. That's not a big deal. 20% of us knew it. We were going to get here with a lot of range because we were talking about Hunter going up, but I'm actually starting to have some issues with the Model S, very minor, but the heated seat, even range mode or range mode off, no Doesn't matter, it doesn't keep warming cycles on,

then

turning off and on, and that's purely a software thing. I don't remember my

model

doing that, but also the heater you have to like, turn it up to here of course, it's a big The car has a lot of glass so it might make sense to put some of those shields on, but I really noticed that the top of my legs were getting

cold

and we're at 20 degrees now I've had the

model

three at this temperature and I haven't had any problems and that's probably in part because it's a smaller car and has a better HVAC system but Those are two things that are a little annoying about the Model S anyway, no big deal, they just turn off the lights to keep warm. but that's okay, we're up to 120 kilowatts and counting, so we'll stay here and plan the rest of our trip.
We were only charging it 147 kilowatts now it's going down and it's only 28% 29% it's starting to go down and that's crazy. I'll have to go back and reference some of our hundred-pack Tesla charging curves when we did some supercharger testing and I think it used to draw over a hundred and forty-five kilowatts, so a much deeper 55%. in the pack that this this is crazy so hmm that's annoying anyway let's find out where we're going so this is still trying to take us on the Canadian route through Ontario that he's here man, you get sick, as I said before. used to the new model, three screens and MCU, two cars, this feels a bit delayed, it's totally usable and normal, it only takes half a second, it's what we all used in the past, so let's say we don't want to do that, we want take this road and we're going to go towards Buffalo, pretty sure that's where it is, yeah, that's Grimsby, so this would be Buffalo here, yeah, there it is and then we'll take that route, so let's say. we want to go to a supercharger just to put it on this road over here Erie and I hope it takes us down the road we want.
I just finished some calls that I put on the next supercharger which is South Bend we could extend it to this one here let's take a look if we just need a couple more minutes 20 minutes that's not worth it we'll go there because we're already down to 80 kilowatts, yes, it falls below. one hundred right at about fifty percent and that goes down hard so let's unplug and let's go it's Paul Blart the mall cop over there literally the mall cop Paul Blart needs a transition to warm up as we continue on our trip, it's up to 27 degrees, you can only see one.
Tire pressure is low now, so that's a good thing. I think it's worth pointing out how quickly people tear up, literally, we're cruising at 85 90 93 and we're just going with the traffic like this guy in front of us is cruising like me. I had to take it off autopilot because it's like autopilot just goes 90 and people start walking away from us. I think it's so funny that men take exit 16 on the right, that was the smoothest exit I've ever had. You know I've had. navigate on autopilot in my last two Teslas, the current one. I didn't pay for fully autonomous driving and maybe I'll make a video why and this is part of it, you just have no idea what to do.
I know it will. it will improve over time maybe we will see nothing has really changed in my opinion since autopilot in 2016 with a massively p1 there have been minor improvements and I guess it was September 2014 when it was released but I would say 16 is when It was pretty good, although it's taking corners like this without a problem at 27 miles per hour, it's crazy, we can go a lot faster than that, oh Tesla, another thing I think is pretty interesting is that it says our last supercharger was in Minnesota, so it's without counting any of our charges for this internally in the car, it's like it's not even going to the superchargers.
I think that's pretty interesting, so maybe it has three superchargers, maybe not, we won't know until it's added to the count. whether it's 400 kilowatt hours a year we are using credits from the previous owner but that would still show the location of the charger or some other scenario so I'm not sure when it says last charge was 9/20 which year. However, I'm not sure I went back and looked at the history of this car and it looked like it was a Tesla stock vehicle. The only reason I know is because someone on the Tesla forums was thinking about

buying

this car so it could be from since then when whoever bought it got free super charging and that's how it is so yeah , I really don't know, it doesn't matter, they won't charge us for it, so it's all good, okay, we're We're going to increase the load here in a second, we're the only ones and by we I mean you and me in this whole parking lot starting to cool down again, it's less than 15 degrees outside and the heaters are starting to work pretty well at the moment, actually there. come on we're charging so everything seems fine we're on these old v1 chargers here in this empty parking lot it says we'll get to the next charger later not the one the trip planner wants to get to but it's another v1 unfortunately with a 13 %, that's good because it's already started to slow down, we never get over a hundred kilowatts here, but it's not a big deal, I think we're on time, let's go offline, let's drain this battery and wait.
To get good loading speeds in the next version 1, I would like to see this. That's 120 kilowatts for a full session, up to as close to 50% as possible. So we're off to Angola, Indiana, we've arrived in what feels like the In the middle of nowhere, on top of this hill, there's some kind of weird supercharger and each of the handles are off their little brackets, They're all lying on the floor there, so I'm going to pick them all up and put them back in their places. place, I think someone must have tried to vandalize it, these posts are down, there's a camera up there, but it's still very, very strange, it says it can't load, so it's okay, everyone was saying that, let's try it, maybe that's why they are there. everything on the floor which made literally everyone shift to 2a which everyone in the plug chair says seems to be the best and we're ramping up here so that's good what I was going to say before is that If you look at our route plan, the car wants to skip this charger here in Ohio and go to this one, which is also Ohio; however, I'd rather go to this one here because it's a hundred and fifty kilowatt unit right off the highway, which is absolutely perfect and we're only at 120 and we're literally having a bad charging session, now we're at 23 kilowatts, that doesn't matter. sense, so this is a bad setup, so we need to get 25 percent or so to make sure we have enough margin to get there.
I have to say 25 percent is higher than where we are. I'm going to move on and try to find a good post here. This one works very well. We are above the one hundred and twenty kilowatts that it says. that we would arrive at this station, so I have only seen this a couple of times. I think Wyoming Cheyenne Wyoming was like that, where it was 125 kilowatts at 120, but the station shows yes, 120 max, so we're over that. for a couple, that's a good thing and we even have the weather on, so yeah, let's charge up here enough to get to the next one on the way.
I'm just having a call with a family who lives in Hong Kong, so it's over here, but they're still wide awake, that's fine, by the way, it was a great charging session, when we moved the posts, it stayed at one hundred and twenty-two kilowatts all the way up to 45% and then started to decrease around 43%. so I came out at the taper point I'll get to the one hundred and fifty kilowatt station about 14% and we rock and roll into the slot the supercharger I'm not sure which one of them knows these cables I was showing you before they are very difficult to move when it's

cold

outside and it's not even that cold now I'm in comparison it's 18 not bad so in version two we're going to set up this load curve we're going to make sure it's a good session because I have enough cabinets to try hunt and yes, fingers crossedfor a good charging session, here we go, as we've seen before in the current charging profiles, these things don't really ramp up until they get close to 20%, which they do. strange, the model three for example used to reach a hundred and fifty kilowatts at 3% and now it lags until 11, this does not increase until 20%, what is Tesla doing?
Gosh, anyway, it's not really better to throw a vacuum with the hundred packs if you're going to hit speeds like that, you'll see now we're starting to get a little bit higher and higher. I have it for New Hampshire, but these take a long time. things to discover tricks planner. I mean, model three is ready. I don't remember the Model S being that old, unfortunately I can't do a factory reset and get all these old addresses out of here. the previous owner because the car is not on our account yet, so once it is, do a factory reset, erase all of those and from what I hear it should make it run a little better, it finally loaded so which says we will get there at 5:47 p.m.
We are now on East Coast time. I think we can overcome that as long as the traffic is good because it's asking for these hour-long stops here, which we can do if we keep the group in a pretty good spot, we'll be able to reduce it. 20 minutes off each of them just by stopping more often, so that should essentially explain it, instead of going all the way, it looks like we're going straight to this one from Sheffield Ohio, so let's see how far it is. will be our next stop on the trip once it's here 20 minutes, that sounds pretty good to me, yeah then we'll charge up to 40%.
It says that's when We'll do it at zero here, you can see it's still slowly increasing as we had 20%. Stay tuned for this. I think it was already increasing before when I hit 25% anyway if I haven't increased. I'm going to change positions, but yeah, this is perfect, that's our next stop. Well, like I said, we could try them all. I practically have this is our third place. I can't get it above 120 kilowatts, which made me think maybe this. It's one of those old versions that has the new version two, as we saw in that previous station, anyway, it doesn't matter, it's not worth unplugging and plugging it back in at this point. 119 is still pretty good and it looks like we'll do it. we'll be able to get there now and we're only at 34 percent so we'll wait until it gets to around five or six percent and then we'll be fine, we've already started going down to forty-eight percent that's to be expected but it only says six percent to get there.
I say let's just hit the road and get out, we just got to Sheffield Ohio at 5% which is good, it's in the sheets, it's finally open. I'm going to go get some snacks I've eaten. zero road trip snacks, just some lunches last night so we'll see what they have in there and man I'm pretty tired, might even try to take a quick nap if you look back at our previous load, weren't we getting in the low 60s? up like 14% and now we're doing 80 at 9:00 interesting maybe the pack was hot now it hasn't shown up even once on this entire trip preconditioning for super charging, but that's cool.
I'm glad we're getting good speeds now. that's what we need look at these 140 kilowatts at 13%. I think the last time we got these speeds we were more than 20% crazy. I don't know why there is a difference. I guess we're on a healthier supercharger in hot cars but that's the only thing I can think of I just took a nap bought a muffin and water and woke up perfectly on time it was an amazing time it says we'll make it to 11 percent, so we are already at 52 kilowatts. Oh. we're really loaded, come on, this is a beautiful supercharger in Erie at dawn, a little snow, a little fun sliding on the road with this, it didn't happen in slides, is there anything wild, okay I think?
We'll be here for a while. I'm going to take some Z. I'm going to make sure this increases even though last time we were doing a hundred at fourteen. I guess it doesn't matter anyway, we'll just let this go because We've seen this behavior before, well the trip planner wanted us to stay another thirty-five minutes here to get somewhere else east of Buffalo, but I guess what let's do. I just woke up from a nap, his head towards Buffalo was loaded. Fast forward to that spot, load up pretty quickly, and then jump from charger to charger, so I say let's go right now.
We'll get there with eleven percent time to go to Buffalo, about to hit the supercharger, and boy, this place sucks. I spent a lot of time in Buffalo traveling and there are the most toll plazas of any place in the US. I think someone should do a study, maybe it's there. I've been to every state except Alaska, which I don't think they have many toll booths there, that'll be another off-spec canal trip like conquering Alaska, which means I'll have 50 states, but I can't think of a place that has more toll plazas than Buffalo. you get off the highway, you get plazi, get on, you have a highway interchange, they are everywhere, sometimes they are like every exit, you just have to slow down on the whole highway and it's not the high speed ones you have to go to reduce speed. turn down the e-zpass and then continue it's just horrible so let's go to the supercharger we're boosting here which is good let's take a look at our trip hoping we get there at 6:09 still that's very well there are two superchargers in the middle Waterloo is right next to the road so make it a hundred and fifty kilowatts let's see where it is off the road yeah you literally start it up and plug it in.
I totally agree with that idea, 93 miles, so we'll load up on old, slow down and if we think we can get there, then that will be our next stop, so the car was asking for another 10 minutes here, but the terrain is relatively flat in this direction and we have a bailout option so it says 99. miles to go if we drive like we drove men 148 come on we were wasting time we're down to 90 kilowatts let's move on we just had a couple of really good conference calls , so sorry for not continuing with this, but a lot of interesting things are coming to the track here very soon, if everything goes as planned we will be able to load the cars a little faster than we do now, so we are working on That's it anyway, we're almost at the supercharger at Waterloo.
We're getting 320 watt hours per mile, it's 28 degrees outside, it's crazy. I'm not in range mode because I'm doing a test every time I plug in with range mode it increases very late I think at least I think it's happening. Here's my theory: charging is slow because the pack cools down while I'm driving because I know range mode will limit the amount of power spent on the battery heater; however, with range mode off maybe it's a precondition for the supercharger I still have. To see that on this trip and maybe it helps maintain the temperature of the backpack, so I get to a low state of charge.
I've seen this increase about 10% at 100 kilowatts and I've seen it wait until the end to like it. 16 17 18 even 20 percent to get 100 kilowatts or more so we'll see if it's tied to range mode and that's just a fun little experiment here we go and a nice complex that looks great. Maybe I'll have to go exploring. that's showing the same behavior as before with range mode off, just sitting at 62,263 kilowatts, what's interesting is that if you plugged it in earlier, like if you plug it in around five percent, then it's going to peak sooner, so which I'm not sure maybe the supercharger cabinets are cold. and they're warming up or waiting for them to reach handle temperature, it could really be any of those temperature related things because the load profile should be a maximum set for the given conditions of the car, which would be both the temperature and the previous charging history, so although the hundred packs don't seem to be limited based on super charging, just the 75 and 90 kilowatt hour packs anyway, I'm going to run inside this casino resort and see if they have any food so we've been here. at one point we went down to 60 kilowatts at 62% i went in and bought a hamburger and drank some caffeine now what the car wants us to do is stay here for 40 minutes and make one more stop while there are enough chargers in between and it seems that This Utica is a good place to go because it is literally off the road and we will be able to take advantage of the charge on a better part of the road, so we will get there in about 24%.
A little time to get the burger, but let's not waste time and get on the road. Welcome to Utica, New York, where we hit 20-something percent. I think let's take a look. Yes, twenty-nine percent just clicked load and it surged. this state of charge everything is nice and warm it's almost above freezing this is very good and it shoots up to maximum speed so it's perfect, load up here and then we'll probably head to Li Massachusetts hey well we've recharged enough to do it. there with five percent actually that doesn't really mean five percent, it just means that Tesla doesn't know what you're going to get there with, but he thinks you're going to get there, it's going to stay at five percent for a while anyway, I think.
We look pretty good if we track our past consumption. I think it gets quite hilly here, so it's a bit difficult to get out of it. We have 191 miles to go that we could cover if we average 327 watt hours per mile, which is what we've been doing and it's only 1:35, but like I said, I think we have some hills so I'll feel pretty comfortable. I think we can move forward, this car is very efficient, so come on, we're on the road and we have an 8% ETA right there, so I'm not worried about that at all, we should be pretty good and yes, we are giving the finishing touches to our event this Sunday.
I do not know, may be. I'll make it in time either way, we'll make a whole video about it and it's a boy named Will, he's nine years old, he has heart failure, it's transplant heart failure, so we're all pitching in to get it done. Big day at the track, we'll have a few hundred people there tearing up cool cars, it's going to be a good time, so welcome to our last supercharger of the trip, man this has worked so well, it's been a fantastic car, let's look. covered in junk, the wipers could probably use new wipers, you can see them scratching a little, looks great, the wheels don't like to be damaged because, again, they were freshly painted before driving, but there is nothing to can really do. about that, let's take a look back, yeah, this looks good.
I feel a little bad about leaving the car all dirty for the first time they see it, but there's nothing I can do. I'm literally leaving the car, we're going straight to the airport and I should be on the plane, the only problem is if we have traffic I might miss my plane and it'll be rush hour in the greater Boston area, so let's keep our fingers crossed and we'll be fine, yes, what a great car. let's do a little summary of the trip because again I'm going to leave the car, get in, maybe this car will leave me in the air, it will pretend and then go home, but we will do a little summary here and it was so far.
On this trip it has been one thousand three hundred and thirty-six point three miles, we have used just over 500 kilowatt hours at an average of 381 watt hours per mile, which is incredibly good considering that the temperatures will remain here for another thirty minutes or so. less. he wants us to do it and then it's, I don't know exactly how much, but we still have this distance, there's still another 159 miles to get to Manchester, hopefully we won't hit traffic. Now it says I'll get there at 6:28 because of traffic which isn't good oh no I'll miss my flight if that's the answer anyway we have to carry enough to get there and let's go let's go let's go let's go let's go come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on, come on go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, as hard as we can, and maybe just leave this. at the airport leave the key somewhere and say you can get it later anyway now the car has been great it's surprising how good value it was, again only around $60,000 for a perfectly nice spec it has all options available except 21 inches. wheels that anyway, you know, they hunt in the snowy area and it's been really good, I'm really excited that a member of my family has themThere's a Hyundai Kona backing up here, but not with a supercharger, it's not electric, right?
Yes, I'm excited that they have it. I think you'll really enjoy this car and I'll always be there to answer questions and stuff, so thanks for joining us on another off-spec road trip. We'll be seeing a lot more track content soon because we also have our own race track in our studio, so see you later.
