BUY vs DIY - Recreating a Disturbing Hand-Shaped Pencil Holder

May 30, 2021
and we'll add these unicorn flakes in there. I'm really excited about that, look at that. KATELYN: It's divinely magical. EVAN: Oh yeah. And then, just to give it a little nuance, let's start there. Oh yeah. Yeah. EVAN: Definitely looser, for sure. KATELYN: Definitely more flakeys. EVAN: I think it looks good. KATELYN: Yeah, okay. Let's put it in the most disgusting mold. Oh, that's a professional broadcast. You are a professional streamer. I am a professional streamer. EVAN: Another good thing about this is that it's very liquid, I think it will make the bubbles come out much easier.

KATE: I hope so. EVAN: Oh, look, you can see your

hand

. There's the knuckle. Strange. EVAN: Okay, I'm going to run it. I'm not entirely sure what this does, but. KATELYN: It's supposed to remove bubbles trapped in your fingertip. EVAN: Work on it! You know what we should do, we should make the vacuum chamber. KATELYN: Oh yeah. EVAN: That's what we were going to do. Will this now break the silicone and pop the bubbles in the silicone? Because the bubbles also get trapped in the silicone. KATELYN: Maybe not in the vacuum chamber. EVAN: Maybe not. KATELYN: I'd hate to mess up the template.

EVAN: Yeah, me too. Okay, maybe not. And hopefully, after four hours, all the air bubbles will rise up here. Here I can make it vibrate. Yeah! Beat him. Yeah! EVAN: Man, this, this resin hits. (laughing) I think that might be it. KATELYN: And I'll see you in... [Evan five to seven days. OK, bye. Three days have passed. I know we said five, but we also did some testing pouring resin into these little heart shapes and now they are completely hard. So let's try to do this without breaking the mold first? Let's try. Know. You could do it.

I can already tell, oh, that's weird. That's a weird texture. And then there are microbubbles everywhere. I also believe it. Or should we just cut it? (laughs) We can try to cut the plastic. Well. I hear sounds. I hold your

hand

. Maybe we should just cut the container. We can get a new container. I'm in favor of that. (upbeat music) KATELYN: This is definitely one of those projects that we thought would be pretty easy and has proven, time and time again, to be more difficult than expected. EVAN: Oh yeah. KATELYN: Let it go. EVAN: You can do it, big guy.

KATELYN: It looks like a really weird big nasty squirter. Oh, it's free. Can we get it out now? Please. Go Go. Oh wait, movement. KATELYN: I heard it, I heard it. Come on, that's not me giving up on you. KATELYN: It's like everyone else's way out, I see. EVAN: Get out of there. Am I witnessing a birth? Pull! (laughing) Pull! KATELYN: Come on! (applause) Oh, that's scary. That's scary Oh, the claw! Oh man, my nails look weird. This is just... Oh, that's crazy. So many bubbles too. Literally everything is bubbles. There are no air bubbles on my nails.
It may be because your skin is very structured. It's kind of like the reaction of Coca-Cola and Mentos. Mentos is not a chemical reaction, it is because in Mentos there are a lot of microcracks and that is what allows the bubbles to form. I think your hand... I have so many divisions. EVAN: It has so many cracks that bubbles stick to it. Because there are no bubbles on your nails. Strange. Strange. Let's see what angle the agent will be at. KATELYN: You know, I might have some

pencil

s. It's an artistic angle. EVAN: You know, it's a balancing act.
KATELYN: It's a bit of a balance, right? This leans like this. It's really nice. It's art honey, that's art. It's art. EVAN: That's art! KATELYN: Okay, so we realized we kept it at a slightly better angle. We just have to ensure it. EVAN: Okay, ready? KATELYN: The very elegant hot glue solution. EVAN: Hot glue. KATELYN: That's very nice. How nice. I can't believe the way it wants to fall is counteracted by the way the cup is tilted. In fact, in some ways we were lucky. Yeah, I didn't even think about it. That looks great! I love the contrast between blue and gold.
KATELYN: I know! Looks great. I like those colors. KATELYN: Let's add some resin

pencil

s. It seems so empty. No. No. Get that guy out of there. Did they offend your aesthetic? Yes. (laughs) That looks good, but we haven't checked the competition yet. We do not have. I don't even know how big it is. What if it is ultra? Small next to ours? Not even a real hand? EVAN: Whose hand is this? Well, I can tell you that the cup is quite small. They are for about four pencils. Oh, the hand is decent. Still a small hand.
So that's a very straight hand. Look, they didn't even add panazz. They didn't even add any danger. Yes, any danger, there is no danger with this cup

holder

. There is no risk of it falling. (gasps) What? It's soft. Oh, that's like cheap plastic that's not even ceramic. EVAN: Look at the cut edge too, look at that. This seems... KATELYN: This is getting off track. The hands move. Everything moves, is everything plastic? None of this is ceramic, it's all plastic. They really made this look like ceramic. (laughs) Okay, well, should we do our official comparison between buying and DIY?
Let's make the official comparison between purchasing and DIY. Did you think we wouldn't hold hands until the end? You shook my hand, don't look offended. You did this. So let's judge this one by some criteria. Aesthetics, quality, function, time, price and the audience vote through our Patreon and YouTube members. KATELYN: So, aesthetics. EVAN: It's hard to judge. They are so different. The "purchase" is very minimalist. Ours is a little loud and we are biased because we chose a shiny gold cup and teal colors. I prefer the aesthetics of us. EVAN: I prefer this. But I could see how this would fit into more people's homes.
But also in terms of aesthetics, if you opt for DIY, I hope you win with the aesthetics because you choose the glass and the colors by hand. So I guess we can say this wins on aesthetics. Yes, it's subjective, but we like it better. Yes. About quality, I think I can make some statements here. Resin, I know it was very durable. KATELYN: This is not porcelain, it is very flexible. There is a clear cut seam at the top of the cup. I think in terms of quality, I'm going to give it to us. I'm really trying not to be biased here, but the resin will last a long time.
This is not known. Even now it's just cheap. Okay, function. Could this be a tip? EVAN: Look at that. So with this one I feel like... That's exactly what it would show. This purchased has a very wide base compared to the top. Our top is wider than our base. I will still say that in some ways we were lucky. This is fully functional. Because this one has a very heavy base and is balanced the right way, it doesn't feel like it's going to tip over, but this one feels a little sturdier. For example, you can touch it.
Well, in terms of function... In terms of function, the "purchase." A larger glass that can fit more pencils. That's true, but is it more likely to fall? EVAN: Okay, okay. What's next, time? Oh. This is always like... We're wondering if we should record this. We only include this for informational purposes. It's hard to say. No, I'm pretty sure this one won. I mean, we ordered this and received it in two days. Here, 50 minutes of active time and more than five days of waiting, in terms of shipping materials and in terms of resin curing. We're just going to say this wins because no matter how you break it down, you'll get it faster even if you start doing it right away.
Clearly a winner in terms of time. In terms of price. (giggles) This might be one of the worst relationships we've had so far. Now let's get to the $35 we wasted on seaweed. KATE: We didn't end up using it. Silicone was expensive. $106 on silicone. About $25 worth of resin. The gold cup, $14. The glitter and the ink. Amount per minute. Cents, very little. So, a total of about $145. How much did the one you bought cost? $19. (laughing) (groaning) That's a little painful. You know, people think DIY is cheaper. Many times that is not the case. You can get seven of these for less than this.
Would you like to have seven? Could be. (laughs) Okay, so the last one is what I'm most excited to share. And that's the mood of Patreon. What do you think our backers thought of this? And the way we set it up is they don't know that that's BUYING and that's doing it yourself. They know which one. They may not know it! This one has resin. Maybe they don't know that that is resin. I think more than 95% of people knew this was ours. Well, I told people that you don't have to guess, you just have to tell us who you like best and share your opinion about it.
I suspect this is not the case since everyone is aesthetic. To be honest, they're a little weird. I suspect most people didn't really like them. I like them. Well, you're right. Most people didn't like it either. (laughs) People were weirded out by the uncanny valley of this not-quite-human-

shaped

hand with the widened wrist and strangely long fingers holding a cup in a way that... EVAN: You don't have cups. And people thought my hand looked like a scary ghost hand that would come after them in the night. (laughs) The realism of the shape of my hand scares people and the unrealism of this hand scares people.
That's why it's quite difficult to win over people with your hands. This is a ghost hand. It's a ghost hand. This is a watery ghost hand. You know that deep blue ocean movie where the hand reaches out and there are people? It was one thing. And now a selected reading of the Patreon comments. The black and white looks like a pencil

holder

. Well, 5/10. Blue looks like a space god tilting a golden cup so the enemy can drink his tears. Yes, 12/10. (laughs) Blue gold seems to be trying to squeeze the blood out of a newly caught squirrel.
I'm not going to lie, they both drive me crazy. They are both caressing those cups, but with very different energies. But the vote was very close. So we had a total of 170 responses. Many of them didn't vote for either of the two because they didn't like it very much either, but we had 49 votes for the white hand, the purchase, and 55 votes for the blue hand, the DIY. (applause) So we won! But barely. So I think overall, by fixing things, we tied it up (laughs). Now we have lost a lot, bad for the price and a little time.
But in the end, you know, you have limited space in your house and you have to reserve it for what you really like, on an aesthetic level. Yes. But is that the most important thing? And is this the best aesthetic? Well, you know, since it's a tie, I think we need a tiebreaker. And I have the perfect person in mind. So which one wins, the one you approach first or the one you spend the most time with? KATE: The one you spend the most time with. EVAN: No, Joobie. Oh yeah, oh yeah, isn't it great? KATELYN: What do you think I should do, honey?
She went in this direction. That means her vote is for this one. Yes, I feel very competent. (laughs) Well, I hope you liked this video, we had fun. How can we declare this winner? We really didn't understand a final vote by the Supervisor. Oh, I think I hear it over there. Was that? Waiting for a gift. KATELYN: Oh, do you like ours better? EVAN: Oh yeah! VOICE OVER so generous: Where is the gift? Well, I hope you liked this video. If you want to see more BUY versus DIY (laughs). We have a playlist, it will be here and further down in the description.
