Black Oxide Coating Parts For Your Own Projects

Jun 05, 2021
Alright, this looks perfect, so I'm going to put my pieces in this section here and let the sealant seal over here and I can take them out right away. 1946. Wow, it's been a while. It's good to be back on YouTube. Thank you all for watching my channel if you have not subscribed to my channel please do so. By the way, all my contact information is in the video description at the beginning and end of the video, so no need to try. contact me through comments, you know, all that information is there, please take the time to read some of the comments, some other information regarding the video, like how to contact the manufacturers or whatever is in the video description below , so today's video is I'm going to make a video on

black

.

Many times you may see hardware that has a

black

finish or some other part, or even guns that have a sort of bluish finish or what they call a black

oxide

coating

. It is a coating that prevents oxidation and gives it a beautiful black finish. Now there are several types of plating processes and this is not what you would call a plating process like nickel plating, zinc plating or chrome plating, this is simply what they call a conversion coating which means there is some type of solution that we go into I'm going to submerge this and basically it will have some salt, some type of catalyst, it will take the ferrous metals and put a black oxide converted into black oxide. or what they call magnetite and that will leave this nice black layer and prevent oxidation.

More Interesting Facts About,

black oxide coating parts for your own projects...

It's basically an oxidation process, so think of it as if we were turning the metal into some kind of rust, but it will be a black oxide and it won't be able to rust any further, the second part of the process is to put a sealant on it so that the roof gets into the pores of the metal, so we'll use it as oil. -water based or maybe like a water based sealer so that is water based roofing will give you a drier look, oil based will give you a shinier wet look, so the process i'm using is sold by a company called caswell plating i looked it up online i'm not getting paid to make this video and i think let me try it.

One of the problems I have with making pieces like this is simply that you have to get a batch of them together usually sent to someone to finish them and most of the time I don't have a volume of pieces to shoot unless I'm making thousands of articles and I don't have time to wait either. waiting for it to come back so I thought in these shift jobs that I'm doing it would be a great idea to try this and see if it works so what they do is give you a black concentrate like this and I have a quart container here and you're going to mix these nine

parts

distilled water that you can get at

your

local grocery store or a pharmacy and nine

parts

distilled water with one part of this black oxide concentrate, which means you can make nine. cups of water, a cup of black oxide concentrate or a, you know, from one point to nine pints and so on from nine gallons to one gallon and so on, so what I also did was try to find containers that I looked for around me and basically had the volumes and the size of the pieces that I want, so once I find the right containers that I like and the size and the shape that I'm using and the volume that I'm using, then I started putting everything together and do a little black oxide test, so let's see that looks good, they come out okay, so let's get to it now, so these are the pieces that you see when they came out of the blasting cabinet, these are the essential pieces that I'm going to do. black oxide layer with the shifter and what I've done, I'm using nylon zip ties to put them in the solution this way, I don't want to use metal zip ties or anything like that, any cables because that's actually going to So I also coats black oxide and I use CRC brake cleaner just to be safe and what I'm going to do is spray everything with CRC brake cleaner it dries very quickly that's fine but just make sure all the grease is Remove the unit, especially handprints.

It dries fairly quickly and any rust that may start to appear again can be removed with sandpaper. This does a good job of cleaning the material, this is what the black oxide concentrate looks like. This is a quart of Caswell black oxide concentrate and the instructions say you need basically nine to one. In this case, I'm going to use cups, so I'm going to make one cup of this for nine cups of distilled water. So these containers that I bought from Walmart are a great size for shapeshifters and a few other items and it's basically a 12 cup container so I just put nine of water and one of concentrate that will fit perfectly in this container.
So what am I going to do? What you need to do now is just say, I'm using a measuring cup and I'm going to put in nine cups of distilled water. You can get distilled water generally at any supermarket or pharmacy, so there are four, there are eight and then we will do one. more cup, that's correct, that's a total of nine cups. Now we're going to make a cup of the right concentrate, pour it in there, so with these instructions that are very difficult to read here, what they're going to say is that basically you might want to keep it on for up to 30 seconds to five minutes.
Okay, the problem is that you really have to measure it based on the color you want. What will happen is in these types of elements what you are going to see. is that if you're trying to get a certain type of color with all of this, you're just going to want to put it in and take it out and look at it until you get the color you want, that will change. pretty quickly at first and then gradually over time, so what you have to do is just look at it first as you put it on and then watch the color change, so we'll start with the small piece first and you can look, look at that, that's it changing color.
Okay, so what you're looking for is you don't want any air bubbles to get trapped, so move it now, obviously if you're doing hardware or something like that, you can leave it. That's right, but notice the way it's changing, but I can still see a little bit of gray and a little bit of black and gradually the black is coming in and taking over the whole part little by little, okay, and that's go. really good it's coming out well so you can see in I don't know if you can see in the middle here it's still a little bit gray and the black is coming back throughout the whole part now the reason why I'm doing this here in the workshop because in Florida it is very difficult to find someone who will do this type of work and they usually want a large volume of black oxide and they are basically doing the same thing only they put it in a larger vat.
So you'll see that it's more uniform now, so I'm going to leave this for about a minute more and move it around a little bit. You can see it's getting nice and uniform. Okay, look at that, so the next step is rinsing. This is removed in distilled water and then placed in a sealant for approximately two to five minutes again. Sealers can be done with a dry sealer or what they call an oil finish sealer. Basically the sealant will take a little while to dry and it doesn't matter and experiment with what it looks like when it's wet, it's what it looks like when it's dry and then you wipe it off so that part looks nice and smooth, now that's good let's take a closer look at it , it's so beatiful. well overall nice, now what we're going to do is put it in some water, so now I'm just soaking it in distilled water.
This is what they say to do, just rinse the piece and it's good to have it. something like this that you can soak up a little bit of water and let it drain well, I'm just going to close this up here, so what I did was I bought one of these pots from one of the home supplies, you know, one of the home goods stores because you have a little strainer here and what you need to do is just put this part here now and just soak it in the sealant, leave it there for a couple of minutes and while it's soaking, we're We'll move on to the next part .
What they do is tell you that when you're doing these parts just check to see if the water likes it if you put water in it because if you have oil, obviously the water will drain out. in a weird direction so that's another way to test it but using CRC brake cleaner is really a great way to just make sure you don't have oil on the part now that the metals are different so you might a stainless metal may not work as well as a normal metal and again types of alloys and maybe the type of heat treatment that is used will affect the way the black oxide works because don't forget we are corroding the metal here and doing this as well That looks good, but you see. there in that little spot where there was some more rust, you see it's not working right, you can see it's fine, which is interesting, look at these areas here that they actually sanded are not working right, look at this right, so I'm I'm just going to take this out and maybe do it again and figure out what's going on why it didn't get to the areas where the sandpaper got into the pores of the metal, so I'm just going to take this out.
You see, there is definitely a difference here. I'm going to put this piece here, the shifter body, now you see the way, while that one goes in, you see the way it has this little shine on the bubbles there, okay, that's not really going to matter. . both because what's going to happen is once this dries, this will disappear, so we'll leave it here now, just put it here and we'll work on this piece, so I'm not really timing anything because I'm looking for consistency in color. Well that's what I'm trying to achieve here and you can see that the only part I put back on had some of that black on the outside that wouldn't stick, it could be due to the heat treatment. because of previous treatments and maybe the blast didn't remove the old plating as well, so you can put a bunch of bolts, say here, and let them sit, but when it comes to old hardware, I'm really going to have to clean it thoroughly, let's see here, it's not catching those little areas, okay, so there may be some problems, but the rest looks pretty good, that body looks amazing, it looks beautiful, the place turned out good, so now.
We're going to do the same thing here, we're going to put it in the rinse, we're going to pour it into the solution here, we're going to let it sit. I know these arms are heat treated, but you can see here the way the water solution is breaking down. this area here who knows so I'll rinse it off and put it in there so I've let it sit for about four minutes in the sealer and you can see again it gets very bubbly but that's nothing to really worry about. We'll let it dry and take this piece out as well.
They didn't turn out too bad, but there's something here, you see, and this is where I really touched it up by sanding it, so I'll probably ruin it again. and do it again, but I think it's my fault, it has nothing to do with the coating process, so one note I want to explain to people here is that obviously I'm dipping my hands into this with this protective glove. but it's probably not a good idea to keep the oil-based solution, in other words, the sealer next to the water-based because anything that splashes here will create a film over this, so you know the oil and water won't mix. they mix, the other thing is it's by putting my hands on these things you see like this I'm getting so wet I'm contaminating it it's not a good idea I did this to conserve space on the bench so everyone could see the steps in the video but in general This it really shouldn't be close to here at all and it shouldn't dip the same gloved hand and the same sealant as in the water solutions, so I'm going to move this out of the way that's obviously going to leave a film on this, so I'll probably The best thing to do is use a new glove.
By the way, I use these gloves from I think her name is Adina or something like that. They have these nice ribs. They're pretty good and this part. It came out pretty much the same, it's a little uneven in certain areas, but it's been soaked for over five minutes. Well, he really had to penetrate it well again. This is a heat treated part that perhaps had a layer of black phosphate. That's it, so technically it's not going to corrode with rust like a normal piece of metal, but even though it was destroyed, it took a while for this to happen, let's dip it back into the solution, just rinse it with water distilled and let it just dry a little bit here and throw it into the sealer.
The great thing about these little containers from Walmart is that you can save them for future use. Caswell says you can store this solution without any problem and use it again, so it's not like you have to throw it away covered and ready to use next time in the meantime, let's take a good look at these parts to give it an oily look, okay, and when dries, those little bubbles will disappear and come back. I come out with this nice black gloss and then I'll show you the whole shifter assembled when it's all done. Now let's look at the results here so that the case looks pretty good.
I really like the way it turned out, very consistent. It seems that this particular metal is very well coated with black oxide, very uniform. The same goes for the backplate. It looks really good, so these two are going to go together like this, so the color really matches well, well, the door arms we had some problems with, you could see this discoloration there and I really think it's something in the metal itself. I've screwed this up twice. They came out a little better, but this one is a little brighter depending on the surface finish I gave it.
This was more of a sanded finish. These were more polished finishes. Now this is the receiver and this also turned out very well. I just want to show you that I got them from her for a particular job and they came raw like this unfinished so I coated them with black oxide. This was the original piece and its raw state was not destroyed, nothing is done to it, it has no surface. prepare plus make sure it is degreased and clean with crc brake cleaner, the other one is the bracket here, these brackets i also made new ones, you can see here, this is completely unfinished raw metal, all done and then coated, and it also looks really Well, here you have it, the Hurst complex shifter completely rebuilt with all the components I use for the black oxide coating, the case, the back plate, the three lever arms and the receiver handle .
Now I had changed this whole mechanism inside here called the carrier and all the springs, obviously, and the shims that go along with the rebuild of the drive axle, which is brand new and I did this because the customer has a type f camaro firebird -second generation body requiring this offset handle for a console, the old shifter he was using, as you could see here, was pretty much something from the 60's, it didn't even incorporate a pivot mechanism, this is one of the actual older designs and the spring action is also very weak on these so they tend to rattle and that's fine. worn out, the whole system is pretty well filmed and worn out, so we used its case and cleaned it up and did all its magic and then put a whole new mechanism inside so it would work properly in the car and I'm going to give you an installation kit completely New with the correct rods and everything to make it work correctly, this is how it turned out.
I think it looks fantastic and after trying it on, it fits really well and shifts really well, so I'm really happy. I'm happy with how this whole black oxide project came together. I think this DIY black oxide kit works great. I bought it again from a company called Caswell Plating. I bought it directly from them because the really nice thing about buying them directly. is that you can pick up the phone and call them and someone actually answers the phone and all the questions and concerns that I had were answered very quickly and immediately, so that's worth it.
I generally don't recommend buying something like this on Amazon or eBay or second hand it's not worth it, it really isn't worth it and the money isn't that much. I think this whole kit cost like $125 and I have a lot of uses for it and I've already made some different mounts and stuff like that. So it actually worked quite well and saved me a lot of time in the long run. I also want to thank everyone who has subscribed to my YouTube channel and if you haven't, please do, that would mean a lot to me. I have more. next videos I wanted to say thank you all for this buy me a coffee link that I posted in several videos that is here again.
The buy me a coffee link allows people to give me some money or funds if they appreciate what I do. I'm doing, I'm investing that money in future construction. A lot of people call me or email me and say, "Make a video about this stream and make a video about that stream. Unfortunately, I don't have all the streams in this store that I've built." a lot of gearboxes, but that doesn't mean I always have them on hand, so what the funds to buy me coffee do is allow me to have some extra money to go out and buy units, so with those funds I bought a Saginaw core from four speeds as well as a t5 core which is not world class, and a lot of people have been asking me to make a video which is not world class, so these will be coming up shortly, that's what I do with the funds, so that I appreciate everything.
That you are making all the comments, all the subscriptions. It has been a fantastic journey and we are going to continue doing it. Thank you so much. See you soon abroad.
