Best Sharpening & Polishing Whetstones

Jun 07, 2021
I don't know if the thumbs up really does anything. I see other youtubers asking for it. I don't really know what it does. I don't know, it actually makes you rank higher or not, so thumbs up really helps me. I don't know if everyone watches this video, likes it, gives me a thumbs up, we'll find out, but hmmm yeah yeah anyway hey guys welcome back Ricky here after the release of my

best

knives in 2017 , many of you came up and said. Hey, what's up with Whetstone? I mean, you do a lot of Western moves, so I do and I really wish I had done more song videos this year, but I had no idea how many partnerships I was going to get and all the knives. that were coming so my channel started reviewing Whetstone and that's my core and it's still the core of what I really want to do so what I'm going to do is go through every level of determination that I've used in the studio this year and then I'll tell you my top picks and give you very brief summaries of each stone, so this will be a relatively long video, if you don't like it, then I won't do it.
best sharpening polishing whetstones
I don't know what to tell you, have fun, good luck, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, now the machine is not a whetstone, but I use it for the same purposes as these other two stones here, so let's start with the machine, cut very fast and it's very aggressive it's a stone that you can do a lot of things with, you can find stones with it, you can re-line eyes, you can thin knives or with it, so overall it's a really fantastic piece of equipment. Glass is not a bad stone, it feels very good. It's definitely coarse, but not coarse enough for me to like being in this category, so this one feels much more like 200, maybe 240, maybe on a 300 grit stone, and although it has a 120 mesh rating or you know. about what is working with sand, the response on the stone is excellent, it does its job quite well in terms of that department, it is very flat and also very dense so I don't see the stone wearing out very quickly here, definitely it wears out at about half the rate. or even maybe slower than that, then they shot in pro 120 which I'll go over next overall it's a nice feeling stone but I feel like it's not the right grit for this range.

More Interesting Facts About,

best sharpening polishing whetstones...

Here, the shot and the one twenty probe are definitely very nice. stone is definitely my favorite stone in this category here it is very fast cutting it loads as you can see here but the loading does not reduce this speed at all all my knives in two passes most of the time in one pass pass max it will develop a burr on both sides. I say if you want a stone to correct your knives with a report on your knives and put a new bevel on your knife, this is probably the

best

stone for that, so really in this palette here is the best

sharpening

stone.
best sharpening polishing whetstones
Of course you know what stone the 120 is, but if you wanted a stone that can also flatten wet stones with the automa 140, it would be that stone, so one thing to keep in mind, although the Shetland Pro does have a drawback and does wear quite a bit. fast, and it's really the only negative thing I have to say about the stone. If you are using a stone, you really have to know what you are doing. Don't bias the stone just because you want to buy a course that you know and that is also thick stone to add. your collection only buy it and use it if you really need it, do not use it to sharpen your knives, never get on the stone to start a purchasing process, if you have a very dull knife, get on it like a 320, 400 or 500. stone grain never step up to a 120 stone to begin your purchasing process.
best sharpening polishing whetstones
I only use 120 and 140 grit stones to reprofile, thin and flatten, that's it, don't do anything else with it, so obviously fix the chips, unless you have one of those problems. Don't jump over any of these stones here, so now we'll move on to the next grit, which is 300 grit or so, so we'll start with the sharp and capable 400. It is a fine 400 grit stone, it is definitely true to the grain. It wears down very quickly and it is a soak stone so for 20 dollars it is a fine stone or for less than 20 dollars it is a great stone for that but keep in mind that it is a stone that wears down very quickly you definitely use a knife stone that he exchanged for more than 50.
OS 850 850 850 55 56 beta 7 well, as soon as you reach the 58 mark, this storm will definitely wear out, other than that, although it is a fine stone, excellent 400 stone if only you want something to practice and do something for yourself. I know it takes away some of the rough edges of a knife. The Shopton Pro 320 is a good stone again for a 320 grit stone. Definitely true to the grains. I would say knives with a Rockwell of 62 will definitely work, while on the side anything over 6. It will be a little slow and the feedback will definitely improve as you go up the Rockwell scale, it will stay pretty flat if you have a knife that's not too hard and the Ives are too hard, you know, wooded it up to a 62. and a taller one will definitely start to serve and call this stone here, the Chapman tumbler is definitely one of my favorites in this category, the comments here are amazing, the hand feel is really nice.
I really don't have anything bad to say about this stone here. The only negative thing I have to say about a chaton glass stone, especially the 320 grit stone, is that it only gives you five millimeters of stone, so it's not a stone you want to wear or flatten too often. This is your hero 320 CX. fantastic stone now they also make a thinner 320 grit stone but they sent me the brick. I really like it, it's a soaking zone, very positive feeling, the tactile response is incredible, it feels very good in the hands, you know, this kind of stone here is not a corrective stone.
This is an ultra course or coarse

sharpening

stone, so if you have a really dull knife that needs to be polished and touched up before putting it on the 1000 grit stone, the 320 grit stone and the 400 stone are fine or They are fine for that and therefore soaking as far as songs go, this is one of the best soaking stones. I think in this category here, if you wanted a 320 grit soaking stone, the 320 search is definitely the best in my personal opinion. Now this is the butt 400. the butt 400 is an interesting stone, a lot of people seem to love this stone.
I think it's a decent stone. I think when they cast Sarah, you know, being in the third family, there are a lot of high expectations for the stone, especially for me. one of my two favorite stones are the real Sarah stones, which we'll get to later in the video, they form ters agate stones. I think it's okay. I think it's a little expensive for what they offer. I think if you want. you know, a 320 grit 320 - 400 stone, 320 sea rocks are a much better value and probably even better performance, just as good a performance as the real Sarah.
I feel like there's a trend and I'm going against the grain for some reason, I know it's weird to say, but as a stone I think it's a fine cut stone, definitely very, so I'll give it that, but it's not a feeling of hand, it just doesn't feel like a great hand feel. stone I don't get a lot of pleasure sharpening the stone, that's what I look for when I buy stones, the feel of the hand or you know how good the knife feels on the stone and the feedback, those two things are very important to My speed will be the third thing I look for because speed usually means you have one or two nicer passes, so speed is something I worry about too much, this is not definitive, it excels in speed, but it lacks.
The hand feel and feedback is decent but again the hand feel is definitely not very good at 400 interest rate. The next one we have here is the super stone 400 for 91, now the stone 400. I'm going I'm going to offend a lot of people here, but I really feel like the 90s were the Naniwa brand. You should kill your super stones with grains less than a thousand. It just doesn't make any sense. All grains that are below a thousand are really slow, so this one is extremely slow even for a foreign tribute stone. you're looking twice, I would say closer, double the number of passes needed to get a burr compared to any of these other stones here, so it's a stone that feels very good, feels very nice, it feels very luxurious, it has a very soft touch and it feels flexible while you sharpen it, it charges very fast and that's the other thing about the super stones that I don't like, they charge extremely fast, most of these stones here a as they are loaded and as you sharpen the The law actually makes the stone surface drops never a big problem, but with super stones and yet the particles and abrasives are not released at the same rate as would be expected on a thick stone so the loading of This happens and when you have a lot of loading your sharpening speed definitely slows down so the 400 cream has a really nice tone to it, it's made by Joe Sarah or by Naniwa at the third alignment, so you don't know I haven't sharpened.
This stone is next to a back 400, but I really liked this stone and I didn't like Leach or Sarah, so even though they are made under the same umbrella, it is actually a different formula than Sarah 400 or the or a professional 400 is what you guys can see them in a really nice tone. The only downside to this one here is that I'm not sure if you can buy it alone, why you might have to buy it in assets or in the kit in general, although Very good performance, very good splash, absorbs a little water when you put it on you use for the first time which is not a big problem, a lot of splashes actually do that overall, very good tactile response, very good feel in the hand again, the only one.
The negative here is that it is very thin and for me, especially for those who are purchasing Yanagi Buzz and want to flatten their stone before each use, this stone here is going to limit the fact that you know the lifespan of the stone because you have to flatten it like this. often the best choice in 320 grit is the CR ironically for H splash and go. I think the shot in glass 320 is the best stone in this category here the overall performance is fantastic, the feel in the hand is amazing, the response is amazing, okay, now we are moving up the sand scale to the 500 category, 500-600 category, so now we are entering the lower arena. sharpening grit range, so now we were getting into your purchasing stones and there are a lot of stones here.
I'm going to leave the 1000 grain for the next round, sorry, here's everything from five hundred to a thousand grains under a thousand, nine thousand under a thousand later. Sarah eight hundred is one of the fastest cutting stones I have ever used, it is definitely one of the best feeling stones. I have used tactile feedback it is amazing as you can see I love the stone if you watch any of my tutorials. Tutorials are made on this stone here, fantastic stone, you really can't find anything wrong with it. The only negative thing I have to say about the choice era is that they come with this silly plastic base.
Here they make the professional line now that eliminates. This base and added some cost to the stone and the stone is actually thinner so I mean you know they charge more for less and it stays flat for a long time? This exact stone here I believe has had over 50 sharpenings and I have never flattened it, I still use it all the time, it is still a stone that I use for my personal knives so for me one of my favorite stones in this line here , the Chapman Glass 500, is a really nice stone, definitely a stone that is really punching above its weight class, it doesn't really feel like a snow 500, it seems a little better to me, it feels more like a glass stone 700 to 800, it's a very luxurious feel, it definitely has a great response.
The Greek tactile sensation is again the only one. The negative thing I have to say about the store and the glass stones in general is that they are very thin, here you only have 5 millimeters of sharpening stone; it would probably be as good as your SERA 800 in terms of overall performance so this is a super 800 stone for me again, anything less than a thousand for super stone production prevents this from being a very slow cutting stone and the charging is extremely fast, so what am I just for reference for you sharpening the ji-hae? The cutter developed a burr on both sides, I think in two or three passes, so that's just a quick phenomenon, because he's sharpening a knife that was tree 266, 800, I think, took seven passes on each side to develop. a burner, so I mean, it's almost three times slower than the editor Sarah and you know me, so it feels really good and gives a really high polish.
I guess it's a good thing for some people if you won the stone and didn'tyou wanted To buy a

polishing

stone, the supersoul 800 actually gives you a polish that was probably equivalent to a 2000 grit stone, maybe even close to a 3000 bit stone, that's what I don't like about super stones, whatever grain they are. When grading their stones, there is a lot more

polishing

agent than any other stone that you know of, so they put a lot of polishing agents on their stones, so this stone here, I mean, if you put if you drill the 2500 grit stone in this thing.
I would believe you, yes, it is a 2000+ grit stone, so I don't find it appropriate for an 800 grit stone again. I'm not trying to criticize Naniwa. I love your brand. I love some of their stones. do, but for the super stones that I really wanted as if they were actually, keeping them shorter grit and you know, making them definitely closer to what their excellent grades should be and removing all the polishing agents at this great level, no you need to polish. agents, so get them off the racks 700. This is the only soaking stone in this lineup.
Here I had high hopes for the stone and you can see here that the charging is extensive, it is probably as bad as the super stone in terms of charging, the soaking time is about 15 to 20 minutes for the stone to work optimally, it is well and the reason why I don't love this stone Because of the x1000 ladder, the Serious 1000 is one of my favorite stones, so when I bought this stone here I expected it to be an even faster cutting stone than the Serious 1000, but It's not like that, it's a little slow. the answer is okay, the hand feel is nice, it's nice and it's nice in a sense where it's very similar to super stone, they feel very luxurious while sharpening them, but for me, at this great level, I want speed and I want feedback and this here was not lacking speed and lacking feedback so these two work very similarly except this is a splash and go and this is a soaking stone and I think this is probably also a little less, but like a stone to start with.
If you sharpen every week or every two weeks, I would say it's a little slow and lacks feedback for me, so now we have to make the best choice and for me, I mean, now it's the real Sarah. You can't beat the speed, the performance, the feedback is just a rock with really good performance. I think in this category here and even up to the 1000 reasons that can be compared to the overall performance of the real Sarah, okay, so now we're getting into it. the 1000 grit category, which will include a lot of songs, I think that's okay, so here we go, a lot of stones, here are seven stones and all very different.
I will offer very different things, so let's start with a pile of stones here. it's the westland e1000 color, it's true to the grain, it's a really nice feeling stone, the wear is not too slow, it's a soak stone, again it's about 20 bucks so for a person starting to sharpen it's a great sum for that feeling in the hand. It doesn't really feel very good, but it definitely gives you decent feedback because it's a very snappy feel and a very crunchy feel and again, a good 1000 stones and it's actually slower than you might think for a budget stone, so Overall, it is decent to choose these crackers on glass 1000.
Well, I did an episode of Shop and Glass 1000 with my sister Sarah 1000. I really liked it. I think it's a great stone. It has a really nice answer. It has a really good tactile feel. I think the only thing it lacks in general is speed. it's about 10% slower than your sera, but other than that it's actually a really good performance tone, it offers really everything you want in a stone, it doesn't load as much, it does load a little, but it loads and it is searched. It doesn't seem to slow down the stone at all, so the overall tactile response is amazing, the in-hand feel is really good and the speed is good.
I wouldn't call it excellent but it's definitely good or above average in terms of overall cutting speed so overall a very good stone, the rear 1000 is a very good performing stone overall, however if you had to choosing between the third 1000 and 800, I would definitely choose the 800. 800 has everything that beats the speed of 1000, it is definitely a faster cutting stone, it definitely feels better. It doesn't feel as soft to me as the 1000 1000 has a bit more of a plush feel to it and that's why it feels good. I won't take it away, but the 800 for me has all the qualities that I would have.
I want a sharpening stone, so overall you won't be disappointed with the stone. I don't think anyone who buys something will be disappointed with it, but I, you know, have the ability to sharpen stones. From my side. From my side. I see them a little. a little different if you bought the Sun just as a 1000 grit whetstone, you would love it, it's a great cutting stone, the CX 1000 is next here, so this story is a keystone, it's definitely a sturdy stone, It is actually thicker. and wider than most bluestones in its class and I like that.
I really appreciate that this is the best cutting stone for me. If you saw some old videos in my Ricky Tran days, I put this stone against the east or saram. 800 and it held its own in all categories, tactile feedback, hand feel and speed, it was a slower pass than the rear 800. Now if you are wondering what a pass is, let me briefly explain one of the passes, so when I sharpen one. knife this is the chef's knife laid out here if I'm cutting a knife from the tip to the heel when I go from here and you know, with a push and pull method and I get to the heel, that's amazing Wow again, that's two passes to the right, so most stones would develop a path, develop a burr on the first side of the knife in three or four passes, the CRX 1000 and the third consistently produced burrs in the first two passes and so on.
For me, the cut speeds were phenomenal, so this year it's the Supersoul 1000. Now this here, you know. I feel like this has been an episode where, like me, I hit super stones. This is a really nice feeling. Stone. Actually, it's starting. It's at 1000 squares it starts to say "okay, well if you want a really nice feeling stone and you're new to sharpening, 1000 feels great, it does the feedback isn't bad, it's not great, it's good feedback, the speed still suffers a little here, but not too bad, I would say if you have a knife, try it below a 61, maybe 62, okay, I definitely want to go below that, if you have any knives or hate for a 61 or you see someone and above, it will just be a little too slow for most tastes, it offers the possibility to sharpen and learn about it, so if you are new to sharpening and really want to take yourself. your time and not letting a stone be too aggressive, super stones are good for them to charge back is a problem for me, I mean, this was here I haven't cleaned it in my last session and you can see this is. after a sharpening they charge very quickly, as you can see, I don't love it. stone I don't think it's a bad stone just in terms of all these other stones here, it can definitely do better and even for its price, even for the category they are targeting the demographic, it definitely lacks speed, that's one of the most important things and lacks feedback, the shopton Pro 1000, this is a stone that many people love.
The closing proline is highly appreciated unanimously throughout the sharpening community, especially woodworkers love them because they are very dense and are flat and safe. for a long time these Pro 1000 closed to me, I have always said it and I will continue to say it, I will continue to say it, it feels more like a 700 stone, maybe maybe an 800 later, at best, so Overall I think it's a decent stone it's definitely good value overall I think it's a very good type of stone it has decent feedback the speed is actually pretty good on the stone it's almost as good as a real one Sarah in terms of overall speed and that would actually make sense because It feels coarser than on a 1000 grit stone because it's so dense, sometimes the density will take away from that feedback that you were looking for in a stone, when a stone is too dense You don't feel much and when something is not. dense enough, it sinks and deflects too quickly, so there's a very fine balance in terms of finding a stone that's in the right place and also gives you the right feedback, so the feedback is good.
I would say the feedback is good, the speed is very good and it can't feel good, so now we have the Cramer 1000, now the Crema 1000 is back. I've only used one number a couple of times on some sharpening. I like it a lot and again I want to refer to the election. it was 1000 because technically it is the same stone according to some sources, they do not feel the same the glass stone that you are, let's just call it I don't want to call it your glass sarah, it is not to choose narrow glass or the Kramer of Zwilling the last stone, it is a stone which feels very nice again.
The only negative thing I have to say about this stone is that I'm not sure you can buy it outside of a kit now. Performance, very good response, very good hand. I feel really good, it's actually thinking about the store and glass stones, which is really nice, I think it's like seven to ten millimeters of stone, which is a huge thing, especially if you're going to do it, if you're the kind that likes it. flatten your stones before or after each use every few uses, it's actually okay because that definitely won't wear down the stone as quickly as long as you are very careful with the flattening, so overall it's a good stone, there is no There is no stone here that offers the same performance, speed, feedback, hand feel and price as the Sirius 1000.
It is definitely a stone that you will love. It is a stone that I love. It is a stone that you can definitely grow with. It's not a stone I want after six months. When sharpening, you may feel that it no longer works well enough. He's someone you can always use. I actually used it on the GA 66 Rockwell and sharpened it and in three passes, it was a really fantastic cut. stone, if you want the best choice for splash and go, it's between your Sarah 1000 and the shopping cup, so it's kind of a toss-up. I would say the speed would be true Sarah OSE the chicken hand feeling would definitely be the 1000 glass however another thing I want to put in there if you are sharpening yanagiya or buying a lot of knives or tools that really require a plane I would say that you choose the see shelves or the ones that you choose Sarah because they are much thicker stones when you have a thicker stone you can flatten the stone as many times as necessary and you will have a lot of life left.
You know, that's really the downside again. I've said this many times with glass stones, they are amazing stones in general, but they are simply too thin for all uses, so for a Perry Knife chef knife they are great because you don't really need a plane if you want speed. Oh, Sarah, if you want to flatten a lot, show Sarah if you want. feedback and hand feel of these shafts and glass 1000 okay, so this here, this category here is kind of a category that a lot of people ignore because you don't really see many reviews in this category, at least when I was researching stones, this was a category which practically no content was created for because you always hear people talk about 1000 grit stones as whetstone and then polishing stone, you know 5000, 6000 and 8000 grit stones and so on, but this category here it is actually very important. category for me because it is a category that offers, at least in most cases, the possibility of sharpening your knives and actually polishing them at the same time, so for many people, if they like to simplify their life, it is They may just want to get something close to this category and call it a day and now explain to you as you go, so the first one we have here is the Cramer 3000, the criminal mil was a stone that I had high hopes for because a butt 3000 Did you say that 3000 is definitely one of my favorite stones of all time?
So when I bought Kramer, the Kramer 3000 glass stone I expected to work better than Sorcerer 3000, but it doesn't and that's my problem because I have so many stones here. I'm always comparing things, but let me tell you, if you bought the Kramer 3000 on its own, it's a great stone, you'll love it, it's fast cutting, it has pretty good feedback and pretty good hand feel. a really flat stone, so you don't have to worry about flattening the stone almost ever unless you do it again, you know, Gabor sharpening doing your naga sharpening. I suggested you get a thicker stone, something you can flatten, you know? often before and after eachuse, but as a stone itself it is a very good performing shade again.
I've only used it twice, so I don't know it very well. I'll do a side by side comparison with each one or the 3000 serums give you a better idea of how it forms. This is a class 2000, 3000 and 4000 sapling. I have used them all, they are actually very good stones. The 2000 is a really nice stone. I really enjoy how it feels. a little too close to 1000 in terms of overall performance which is not a bad thing, it is a luxury feeling stone, it has a decent back polish, it polishes 2000 grit and these are pretty close, they are actually Shopton glass stones a time you move up.
The sand ratings that are real are very close to what they perform, what are their stated ratings and the lowest rating is another question, but they feel really good, it's between 2000 3000 4000, it's really up to you, I would say 4000 It's a really strange category, it doesn't really give you the speed of a 2000 or 3000 grit stone and it doesn't give you the brilliance of a 5,000 or 6,000 green stone, although it is a very good stone, however, again, If you're looking for a 3 to 4000 grit stone, you're literally in the middle of what you would consider a polishing stone and a sharpening stone, you know, so it's these two, these two big rings here are kind of weird grades. . but they are still decent in terms of what they offer, the 3000.
I really like the 3000, it really comes close to the overall performance as they went with the Sarah 3000, it has very good response, it has a little bit softer feel than a real Sarah and speed. It is definitely about 10, maybe 20% slower than Mr. Sarah, during sharpening I found that, especially knives in the 62 to 66 category, I had to make an extra pass to get the same bird development as real Sarah, that's not really a problem, although I mean, again, the pass is 30 seconds to maybe a minute and 30 seconds. no more than no more than 30 seconds so overall these two stones I really enjoy the 4000 again it has a very good overall performance I mean there is nothing wrong with the overall performance of the 4000 it just sits too close to a category of 5000 or 6000 and too close to a 1000 3000 or close to 2000 3000, so it really is the oddball in this lineup here.
I don't really see a real use for the 4000 unless you're planning on coming to us an 8000, you know, and this is kind of the intermediate stepping stone, so if you want to go to one thousand four thousand eight thousand or one thousand four thousand. ten thousand that makes a lot of sense because then the 4000 grit stone costs a little less than the five thousand and six thousand stones because they don't have the same polishing agents but they allow you to go up to ten thousand. or grade eight thousand, so to me, if you're looking to get a complete set of cutting stones and you want to get a really good polishing stone, then the 4000 stone will make sense, but as an N stone, as a stone, you stop with you.
I know I'd say that still doesn't mean it doesn't make a lot of sense. The super stone 3000 is a really good polishing stone, so let's talk about feedback. Feedback is almost lacking. Missing in the stone. You definitely don't feel the feedback. at all it is a very soft feeling it is not a soft stone per se but it is a very soft feeling it is a very luxurious feeling it is what I can a little hard I put the polish at 3000 it is phenomenal this polishes more like a six thousand stone grain. I mean it's almost a simple polish and which is really rare for 3000 grit stone.
I don't think any other creature stone really offers polish the way the super centers do if you want a low cost stone immediate, a relatively low cost stone. that gives you a really high polish, so the 3000 makes sense, like for example let's say you want to buy eight thousand rich stones because you want a mirror polish, well actually it's better to buy a 50 $50 $6 super stone because the polish and this This is phenomenal, it will give you a polish of what you would find on a 6000 or 8000 grit stone, so that's what I don't like about these super stones is that they have great ratings unless you've actually used them.
I don't really know what they are, what they really are and you know it's general again, the charging is very fast on the stone which I don't like, the tactile sensation is really nice and the response is completely missing but on this range of stone , feedback probably isn't the most important thing you're looking for, so overall I mean it's a good stone you have, you have to check the boxes you want for the stones to actually work for you now that we're on the Shapton Pro 2007 Pro 2000 is a really nice stone. I must say that it is much better than the 1000 rica stone and is definitely probably one of the best cutting stones for professional shaping and line.
It's pretty fast, I'd say in terms of overall speed. probably close to the truth Sarah maybe 10% slower if that's very good in terms of overall speed the hand feel is really nice it has the same thing I mean it's very dense and very hard but it feels much better than the 2 then the shopton 1000 range is a really good cutting stone overall. I think anyone who buys Stumbo will be very happy with it. It cuts very well, stays very flat, provides excellent feedback and also a great hand feel. That's why I really like the stone, the feel of the hand on the stone is different from what you would see on Shopton 1000, so this is a suitable sharpening stone for me, again, it's a 2000, it's like was in that low polish, high sharp category and to me the 2000 on this same stone actually makes a lot of sense so I really like the shopton Pro mm, great stone.
Next we have the butt 3000, have you seen my channel? I've been on my channel for a while, you'll know this is my favorite stone. I give it all the time. It is a stone with which you can sharpen your knives. It is a stone with which you can polish your knives. I mean, he can do it all. It's also very fast in terms of overall speed, it's almost as fast as a task server 800. It gives you a pretty true to grade polish. It's between a 3000 and 4000 grit braid, which is really nice and yeah, I mean there's nothing wrong with it. with the stone again I hate the base they come with, they are just annoying but I respect that it is complicated what they want there is the new professional 3000 it is exactly the same stone same formula a little thinner than the trocero 3000 but if you wanted a stone You know, people He always asks me if there is a stone I would like to wear for the rest of my life.
Yes, I would say right now it is the third 3000. I really love the stone. It is a truly fantastic stone. The response of the stone is unsurpassed. the feel is second to none and the wear and tear on the stone is very slow, it is very slow to use, which it is also, but you don't see many stones that are very slow to where feedback is lost. but somehow this stone was able to do it, it gives you great feedback but it's also slow to use and it's also very flat. This stone here also has, I would say almost as much, maybe close to four dozen straps.
I have never flattened it and it is once again a really good performing stone. My pick of the year for the best budget stone in this category is definitely the shopton Pro mm. You know, price and performance, it is without a doubt the best offered here. It has the same speed as the closed glass stones and offers you the same flatness and is obviously not as dense as the shaft and the glass stone, so the wear will be a little faster by looking at 20% to 30%. % faster. wear on the shaft and pro stones, but that's not really a problem because considering the price of the stone, I think I've seen them for between 40 and 50 dollars, maybe a few dollars more, so the price is very Aggressive for a 2000 grit stone, okay?
So now we were getting into the 5000 5000 6000 category, so here we go, this is your 5000 to 6000 category and depending on who you talk to, this is what you consider a medium honing stone. Some people say anything over 6000 would be fine. polish and then anything over 10,000 makes your polish ultra fine so for me this is what I consider a medium polish category so we have the Rica 5000, the superstone 5000, the rear 5,000, the Shapton pro 5000 , the Cramer 5000 and the Shutting Glass 6000, and us. I have some other stones here, okay, so let's start with the Rika 5000. Yes, this is my original Rika 5000.
I still use this stone all the time. I love the stone. It is a fantastic soaking stone. This is the same stone that is a base. version of the stone I'm not a big fan of the base because it's a soaking stone and this stone here probably again the best performing Circassian stone is this stone here it's fast cutting in terms of speed and it's probably the same of fast as such, saira 3000 which is phenomenal and has a really great response, has a great feel in the hand, definitely doesn't feel soft at all, many circumstances and this rating will feel a little soft and cushioned as the sharpen no this one here this one here is amazing that's all I have to say now this is where I see that super-soul is really starting to shine well in this great this great rating here the 3000 is decent but the polish on the 5000 is very , very good it's more like an 8000 grit polish and that's what still drives me crazy although I enjoy the fact that they give you a really high polish stone.
I don't enjoy the fact that unless you really know and the battery is dead, okay? In Russia, I'm a 6000, I forgot that was okay, so let's go back to the 5000 um, so again I appreciate the fact that they give you a really high polishing stone. Charging is still a problem. The stone that is there still has some substantial speed. a big problem because at this level you're not thinking about speed so speed isn't great but it's not a problem Penfield it's really nice very luxurious feedback feel it's actually a little better than the 3000 I really enjoy how this feels better and gives you a little more tactile feedback than the 3000 grit stone, so overall a decent performing stone.
This is when I say that if you want a super stone, this is where you should start. You should avoid everything below this if you really wanted maybe three thousand in stone case, but I would definitely avoid anything below 1000 because they just don't do anything for you, they are much better stones for the same price, but at the 5000 grit level you're starting to see the super stones shine a little bit better or a little more, the 5000 butt is fine so honestly I was really hoping this would be my favorite pick because I love the 3000 butt and I was thinking, man, maybe the 5000 would be Even that's a lot better, but just a higher polish, not that much.
First of all, it is actually a relatively smooth feeling stone, it actually feels like a super 5000 stone, which is really surprising to me. I expected it to be the same speed. in the same comments that chose Sarah 3000, it's not like that, it also feels a little grippy and sticky. I know it sounds a little strange, but because I think the density of this is the particles and the abrasions are very tight on the back stones or at least unless the back 5000 doesn't emit enough abrasives while you're polishing, the polishing look doesn't. It's bad, it's actually giving you pretty close to a mirror polish, which is good, but getting there is not fun, yes for me. it just doesn't live up to the back line, all the choice areas below this one except the 400 or the big stones, the 800 1000 3000 or everything fantastic, the $5,000 just doesn't do it for me, it just doesn't have that Same comments I was looking for overall, it's a good stone, it's definitely too much money for what they offer, definitely not something that lives up to the choice or the name, so this is the satin pro 5000 now, yeah They saw my original video.
From this on Ricky Tran, you will know that he did not love this stone and the main reason was because he lacked feedback. I felt like the knife was always floating on the surface and I never felt like I really knew what the knife was attached to. and I still feel like it's a decent stone, it's just not great for the price, not bad, it lays very flat so that's good, it's also a real splash and go so that's good too you know, I find that people like The woodworking world loves this language because in the woodworking world you were something very affordable and that just does the job for us.
In the knife world we are a little more vain and want things like feedback and fan feel. Woodworkers don't care about that stuff, at least I don't think so, not according to some of the subscribers I have, they love stone and for me, you know, from a knife sharpening point of view, it makes a good job. a very nice mirror polish andstays flat for a long time. Charging really isn't a big deal. It charges, but very little. I mean, we say charge as little as they chose Sarah, so it's not big. deal at all so it has some really good points in terms of stone overall are the best qualities of this stone here is the price and the actual finished product your knife will come very close to mirror polish and just get there simply it is not.
It's a lot of fun, you don't really know what the knife does, so if you're new to sharpening you'll miss the feeling that you're touching the stone, it's a little hard to detect what your edge is. is actually doing it, I don't agree with that, although the finished product is quite good, the 5000 kramer for me was a big surprise, it was definitely a stone that wasn't really expected to do that well or have a performance so good. Well as it did because of the butt 3000, yes I held the butt 3000 as standard so the Kramer 3000 disappointed me, how come the cream 3000 doesn't feel the same as a butt 3000, so what do I do with the Kramer 5000 The 5000 is a fantastic performer and blew away the Kramer 3000, so the reason I don't love the Kramer 3000 is because the Kramer 5000 is such a good rock. this is what your sareth 5000 should really feel like, but they don't feel the same at least in my mind and they may be the same stone but just a different color.
I have no idea, but to me this is a stone that feels great. the response is great, the hand feel is great, it's a very dense stone, but you definitely know what the knife is doing. I never felt like I was lost or that the knife was just doing something I didn't really understand every inch of. travel of the knife I knew what the knife was doing and speed versus speech is not something that is really measured in this category, so speed was something I didn't even try to measure, but the overall tactile response and feel of the hand They were fantastic. the 5000 stone, so I really love it, the only other time, the only drawback I can see with this stone here possibly is that it is not sold out of a kit, but as a stone itself it has a fantastic 5000 performance as well With a 6000 I have to wear this maybe three or four times this year and it is a really nice stone.
I'm pretty sure I never flew with the stone. I used it to sharpen a resume for Yanagi BA and a couple of other Nagas here at church zero and overall I really like this. down here again the only thing I found and I didn't trust to discover this, but over time, when you are tuning your Naga Bus more and you really need to make sure your stones are flat. This one is so thin that it's really going to suffer in the long run when you're flattening a lot and that's really the only drawback I see. It's just a good performing stone, it does everything you expect from a good shot and the glass stones cut really well, it has a really great response, it has a great feel in the hand so it doesn't really stand out from the rest. crowd here the airbrush in Yama 6000 is the last stone here and this was one of my first polishing stones that I bought.
This is actually like my third copy, the first two copies I had, one was given away in a giveaway. I gave one away and one was posted by a friend of mine who borrowed the snow and never returned it, so this is my third Arashi Yama 6000 here. It's a really good stone, it's made by a company I think is called Imanishi and they make the best. It is also a great line of stones. Very quick side note. I had the massive 8000 bike here early last year and the massive 8000 model was a rock. They felt the same.
They had the same Naga stone that was included. That is the same basis. exactly the same size, so my suspicion was that the massive bike was actually this was the renamed and recolored Russian Yama 8000. They felt exactly the same when using them side by side, there was no difference in terms of polish finish or even how they feel, needless to say it's a good performance tone, its feedback is okay, it's not that crunchy as I would like, but it is definitely a very luxurious feel, the hand feel is excellent on the stone and as you know it is very good, it is a very good stone overall and also one of the most important thing before this stone is the price, you will find it for only 48 dollars.
I've seen them on Amazon and usually if they range around 50, it's a really good priced stone for this high level of grain grading. I like this. one a lot, so you know, even though I don't wear it very often right now because I have a lot of the things I'm wearing, including my straps, I'm still supposed to like having it around because it's a very good performing stone. If you want a soak polishing stone, the suggestions now on the best stone you can buy is the 5,000 week, it is fast cutting, the response is amazing and the hand feel is amazing so there is no better stone nor better stone to soak in this written qualification. you can buy them Rica 5000 in the Splash and Go categories or the best question for me is Kramer and Shopton, but if I had to choose between them, I would choose Kramer because Kramer offers It gives me the polish I want, but it also does it a little faster and also gives me a little better response than broken glass, so the 5000 cream is a photo of this group if you wanted a dip and that's it, Rica soaking Kramer. splash and go, okay, I think we have one more category to go here and it's the 6000, it was over 6,000 to 8,000, so I think it's the 8,000 to 10,000 category, so I don't have many stones here, I have some, but not many.
Okay, so let's start with the left and the right, we'll go this way. Well, this is the Yama 8000 kids and it's a really nice stone. It's a stone I've used maybe four or five times this year, in terms of overall tactile response. and I feel it feels extremely similar to the Russian Yama 6000, it may be a little harder. I can't really tell unless I sharpen them side by side so I will make a video of them side by side and really give you a better understanding of these stones but they feel very similar, they come with the same denial with the same packaging and they also have the same branding here on both sides you can't see I don't know you can see that even their branding is personal here these are the same characters so I guess they are made by the same company so I I would be surprised if they are 99% the same except the color or feel extremely similar when I wear them again.
I didn't wear them side-by-side, so I can't confirm it, but it feels great. I really like the stone. This is the super stone 8000. I have used it twice this year. He feels good again. This is where the super stones are actually found. The shine is that they give you a lot of polishing agent for your money, so if you want a very high shine polish and you don't want to spend more, say 70 or 80 dollars, this is a good stone for that, again, lacks feedback. like any other super stone, but again, no big deal, speed. I couldn't really test the speed at all and the speed is not something that is tested in this category in general, although it is a nice, snow-white stone, this is an interesting stone because it is a very old formula.
This is a stone that has been around forever and everyone knows Snow White 90. Why do I like it? I like it like stone. It's a very good performing shade when I first used it, although I thought it was such a waste because it was taking enough water for a thousand stones of sand, but I found that after using it only a couple of times, by not soaking and just throwing water to the surface, it actually works pretty well between this and the super. Stone 8000 feel very similar. I would say the 8000 probably has a little more refined formula, maybe a little more refined.
The reason is that I find that this one feels a little sticky at times and again probably because it is very dense and the Pearl. and the art and polish of the haitians is very small, it seemed to grip the knife a little so it felt a little sticky in some spots, that's not a big deal after sharpening it for a while and the stone has some part, but as a new stone, it felt a little sticky overall. I really like the way the sun feels because of the performance of the spring. It is a very good stone, but I think it is a little expensive for people looking for a good overall polishing stone.
The glass shufflings 8000 In fact, I just cleaned it. I did a cleanse like yesterday and you guys will probably see the video a few days after this. I did a cleaning of my entire ship, glass stones and my Kramer. I'm going to be shooting a little bit with them, so I wanted them clean, so this has a whole new look, but you can't see assisted marks on it, it's a very nice thumb, it's once again the crane. You know, these broken glass stones are really interesting because they have so many stones that they practically have all the stones. at each level of grain that you have, I think I think there may only be seven thousand grains missing in nine thousand grains, but they have like 128 320 500 1000 2000 3000 4000 5000 6000 8,000 10,000, so they have pretty much all the grains of the line up. and then the 8,000 is in the same realm, you know, because you can have the 10,000 grit stone and then why buy the 8000 where you have the 10,000 or why stop at 8,000 and that's really interesting to me, why they would?
I think for people who really want a true 8000 grit stone, that's great, but if you want to polish a stone and you offer a thousand and ten thousand grit, you're kind of confusing people a little bit and that's why it doesn't really work. I love the fact that they offer so many stones and so many grains across the grain range, but as a high performance stone it is a very good performance stone. You know, it gives you a slightly better polish on the six mils, although it's barely noticeable. You will notice a slight difference between six thousand and ten thousand, but from six thousand and eight thousand it is very small and that is why I feel that this stone is out of place as a stone on its own considering the price and the performance is much better, often, some of the other stones that are available in this line here, but overall, although you get a really nice stone, I love their stones, I mean, I love the fact that they give you frosted tempered glass and also a stone.
It's very dense and very hard, but while it gives you a pretty good response, it's okay, so the second Pro 8000 I've only used a stone once this year and I can tell you that it's a pretty good stone. I mean, the polish is really nice. In fact, the response is even better than the 5000, which you know, on the 5000, which stone the polish was good, but it lacked response. I found that the 8000 gives you decent feedback and a good tactile feel with a good polish, so that's really the bay, the main one. benefit of the 8000 grit stone and also in terms of price, I think this is the cheapest stone in this line, so it's definitely a plus for those who just want a really high polish and don't want to spend a lot of money, so which overall is a very good stone now we are heading to the 10000 category the sim mosaics in the category again this is the Shapton 10000 glass stone it is a really good stone if you are looking to get a polish it is between six thousand eight thousand ten thousand I would say get the ten thousand grit stone, you don't need to go from one thousand four thousand to ten thousand six thousand ten thousand, you can directly go from one thousand month to ten thousand, so in case you are wondering, it's really nice . stone, the polishing is really nice, the response is really nice.
I mean, you know, as you increase the grain ratings, you start to feel less and less stolen, but close because this is a very dense synthetic stone, they've been able to give you a very good response and a very good tactile feel in a very high standard stone, which I really appreciate, so for ten thousand a stone, this is a fantastic stone, very luxurious feel, definitely very good response and very good hand feel, and the fact that out of the box It's perfectly flat, it's a very good advantage for that, okay, this is the Goku neo Goku mio ten thousand.
I have used the stone once. It is very pretty, very, very pretty and, curiously, it has a very good density. Well, you know, Goku. Mio are the sous heroes, my big premium stones, it's just that there are only a few distributors in the world that sell them and they are very expensive, although that is really the biggest drawback of these stones, they cost over $200 per stone, but you are getting a very good stone, the polish is amazing, it is definitely a real 10,000 polish, the feedback is amazing, the hand feels amazing, I mean there is nothing wrong with a stone other than the fact that it costs a lot of money and , you know, that's really the biggest negative of the stone and The other thing is that it comes in a huge box, at most the box is like three times the size of the stone, so I was hoping to have these big stones, you know, when I opened the box, but the stones are average size stones, but the box is huge and when you see the unboxing you will understand, yes, soI mean this is a really good stone.
I mean, I don't really have anything negative to say about the Gong kunio 10,000 just the fact that it costs. a lot of them cost a little more money than ideal, but from a performance perspective, it's really good, they're all splash and go, so I couldn't say best splash and go, best soaking stone, let me give you my best choice if you just want a good performance tone for your money, so the best performance stone for your money in terms of raw performance per dollar is the kitayama 8000. I think it's by far this and the Shepton Pro are pretty much equals.
The price is very close, sometimes you can find them depending on when you buy them in the season, the price will fluctuate obviously that's why I don't talk about the price too often because you never know who sells them or where you can find them. The reason I chose the kendama over the Chapman Pro is the fact that this one is much thicker, it's twice as thick as the Chatham Pro and also what makes that important is because people who are sharpening things like your Naga buzz and from buzz that need a plane, you can find it in this, you know it a hundred times, maybe even more than that and you still have a stone to work with the axis and, professionally, it has a really good performance of the racial price Relative to the Gotama, the Kitayama is still a better stone due to the fact that you can even find stones many more times than the purchasing professional in terms of raw performance if you wanted stones if you want a stone that will give you incredible performance regardless the price, I would say it's between goku mio 10000 and glass shaft 10000 these two stones here if you took the price out of the equation there are amazing stones that would give you a very good response they give you a better response than any of the stones here and better tactile feel than any of these stones here and therefore for me these two stones are the best in terms of raw performance without considering the money so my conclusion on this video and the previous stones in general It's always buy what you can afford, never.
Hear me out, don't take my advice as the only advice you should follow when it comes to buying stones. I'm so biased too. I'd say I'm as biased as the next person, but I have my biases when it comes to sharpening. stones so I look for things that people might not look for in certain things so you know I really appreciate you taking my word and my advice as my buying advice but do your best and do your research and you know. what other people say, ask your friends who like knives what stones too, so don't take my word for it, oh and a quick note, people always ask about how to clean their stones with nagra, so let me give you my top pick for sharpening accessories these are your hero stones so these stones are made by your hero they are pretty they are great nagra's there is a 1000 3000 5000 I would say avoid the 3000, it doesn't make much sense it just doesn't come out very well and it doesn't clean stones very well the 1000 does a much better job on the 5000 it's really good if you want to add a polishing agent to your stone if you use your sharpening stone and stop producing any type of blend and want something that will give you better feedback, place the 5000 black.
In fact, it will improve the response a bit. The 1000 is something like that. You can use it as a cleansing stone. I really wouldn't bother, honestly this is what I personally use for my cleansing. I use a rusty razor. Saboteur EO saboteur ooh it is left on Amazon it is linked in the video description everything here will be linked in the video description by the way and I will leave a kind of summary of everything I have talked about in this video but between these two this one here is I think that you can buy a pair of these for 14 13 14 dollars or you can buy one of these for 15 $ 20 get one of these they will last you I would say a hundred times longer than this one I have used it once Just a few days ago in a cleaning you see that the The corners are already worn and after one or two cleanings, this one here has been used for more than a year and you can see that the size is practically 99% of what the original size was. and then this is much better, this is the medium one, this one is in your house, it is the one with the white writing, there is also one with the red writing, you will not get the mortar with the white seal, clean each stone, I will give a Con good luck, in the next few days I will be cleaning a lot of stones and you will see that this stone here or this rusty gray one that you see here was cleaning stones from 120 grit to 10,000 grit, so it has the widest range of use. available that's all it's also a rusty razor so you can remove rust from your knives and it makes you know your October plates if you had Russell and developed on your plates or something so I use them all the time and so That's why I recommend or strongly recommend that you buy them from Agoura, especially 1000 grit, which makes no sense at all and this is a vanity stone or a stake, a cut or a cake, a Naniwa cleansing stone, this It is the cleanest best stone, so rather.
Than buying a 1000 hero stone, getting the Naniwa stone actually cost me less money. I think it costs between 15 and 20 dollars, well it's about the same money. I've seen them for up to $40, a little pricey, but they're usually $20 on Amazon, $15-$20, and have always been $15-$20, depending on where you buy them. They are really good. This is what I would prefer if you want to have a lower grit stone to clean. You really needed a cleansing stone, yes, so I definitely recommend them. I really like them, but the best cleaning solution you can get for your stones is a rusty razor.
I discovered it when I was playing one day as a Last summer, when I was joking around, I discovered that they did a really good job cleaning wet rocks and since then everyone who recommended them loved them, so I think I'm the first person who pioneered cleaning wet stones with a rusty razor, so I'll do that, I'll happily take credit for that, yeah, so I think there's a link in the video description for all of these stones here. I'm not leaving a link for each of them, but I will leave a link to all the top picks and I'll make a list for you and give you my highlights and my summaries of each stone of my top picks and why I chose them for you. easier instead of retaining all the information. in this video just go to that list and break it down and then have fun shopping if you want to buy any of these stones yes for 2018 I will have these stones they will all come back and in 2018 you will see. everyone again, I have a dozen here from your hero that I haven't opened yet, but I have another dozen stones from another vendor who is shipping some stuff here that is really exciting, so I'm really excited about it. 2018 will be a great year.
It's going to have a lot more focus. I'm going to try to focus a lot more on the wet stones. If you want to see certain wet stones, go ahead and tell me what they are. I will definitely do this. I'm posting a list of all the stones that people want to see compete against each other. It's going to be a lot of fun in 2018. I'm coming to Whetstone because I love stones, that's what my channel started and because of my Whetstone once my channel got big, so I can't leave behind what it sounds like. I love them and for those who really just want a stone that works and don't want to spend money, go for a brick, yes. brick, if you haven't seen my video where I sharpen a bunch of knives on these, on these, on this brick, here I will post them in the links in the video description below, if I don't post them, just leave it all hamid, hey. dude leave your video link to the brick video like you know they're fun to watch but I've successfully nailed Sharkman.
I think there are three knives at this point on this brick and they are. I always say they're sharp knives and you know, it's a lot of fun, so try it, you know, try buying in a brick if you don't want to spend money on a whetstone. I hope you enjoy this video. You know, I don't want to ruin your Christmas shopping, you guys might have to add. this on your Christmas shopping list, you know, just wait until next year when you make some money back and pick up some new wet rocks, but Merry Christmas everyone, thank you all for being here, thank you for helping me grow my channel to where it is today. guys enjoy this video, give it a like and I'll see you in the next video.
This will probably be the last one. This is officially my last review of 2018 or 2017. If you see other videos, it might just be a couple of unboxings that I'm bringing back over time and posting some videos. I'll probably respond. I will publish another video with only questions and answers that you ask me every week, but this is the last one. review session my last one that's all this is not good anymore I need to rest a little so you can enjoy the Christmas holidays and I'll see you in the next video oh my Paul Ricca my Paul Ricca this is what happens when you lend a stone to our friend mm-hmm yes, this is what happens as nice as it is for my followers who support me monthly on patreon.
I feel very bad for asking for money and not giving anything in return. I am not the type who likes to ask for financial support from just anyone and that is why I want to thank all my sponsors for supporting me in these last few years. I don't know how long I've been like this six months or so thank you for being there for me and so each One of my followers who is currently active on Patreon will be sent a leather handle so two reasons why I made them as one because i love stopping and making them for myself for my personal use and also for those who want to support my channel instead of going to a patreon just take a strop it's something I can give back to you that you can use instead of just money going to an account and never see anything afterwards and it is one of the most important objectives. for me it is creating a product that is usable not only for me but also for my viewers.
There are a lot of things I wish I could change in the world of knives and a lot of things I really want done differently and this is one of them. They are offering very high quality stops at a much more affordable price than what I see on eBay and Amazon, so they'll all be available on my Etsy page, which I'll leave linked in the video description, so a number of you guys reached out and asked if I could get a discount code for wrong products from Dallas. Now he had to be honest. I never thought about that and you know every other knife I reviewed on my channel offered a discount code of some kind and it never occurred to me to ask for a discount code for my subscribers so I contacted them recently and asked if I could get a code for my subscribers and my viewers and they said yes, so I'll do it. leave a code in the video description, basically you have a code that applies to all the products tiles and your umbrella is a code, which means you can answer any: one product and you don't have to buy multiple knives, just you can buy a knife and apply it so they know that hopefully they're happy with the fact that it's a pretty good code.
They told me the discount is the biggest they offer. I asked them to make sure the code was a good discount. I can't really find anywhere else that is outside of my channel, not that I'm sponsored by them or anything, but I just wanted to do something special and give something special to my subscribers and viewers, so they said yes, it will be pretty good. Good code and I think my subscribers will be very happy with it, so good luck again. The code is in the description. I think it's called perfect. I will leave the exact spelling in the description and you can check it. go out and see if it really works
