Jun 06, 2021
What's up guys, welcome back to another episode of useful outdoor living. Well, since we're stuck at home being responsible during this quarantine, today we're doing something a little different. We'll be reviewing some knives, so I get this question all the time. It's time for you guys to ask what

knife

do you recommend for a beginner or someone trying to start cooking and on a

budget

and to be honest I don't know because all my knives in my

knife

bag are $200 or more so I definitely don't. I don't recommend any of these if you're a beginner or on a

budget

, so I bought three different knives, very affordable knives ranging from forty to seventy dollars, and in my opinion, I got the ones that look the

best

, so let's try them out. these three. and I will tell you which of these three will be the

best

for you, so we will find out together which good budget knife is okay, so let's start, these are the three knives that I bought.

Amazon they all come in really nice boxes they usually come in boxes like this this first knife is $40 this one is $45 and this one is $72 but when I bought it it was 60 so they just raised the price I guess . but anyway let's go over each one of them, this first knife is from a simple song and this is an 8 inch Japanese Guto chef knife and it is single bevel stainless steel which means only one side has a angle and the other side has an angle. flat so it's a single bezel and yes it feels really good to wait for a good weight.

More Interesting Facts About,

The handle is quite nice. Nice rosewood handle. I might not dig all that in the back, but that's okay. I already see a flaw in this. knife, you see that the tip came chipped or they just don't sharpen it, it is very rounded at the tip, which is quite strange, well, that's the first, the second, this is from fans. I don't know how to pronounce it, maybe the fan shots I'm Cute, whatever it is, this one is $45. A Japanese

style

chef's knife, also known as a Guto, is also 8 inches, so they're all the same

style

of knife.

Nice and beautiful rosewood handle. Octagon shaped handle. Beautiful. Actually, the handle is like. really soft and the steel is called 9 CR 18 mov which is the type of steel that is a fairly common type of steel that is commonly used in many kitchen knives and many pocket knives, you also see the space on the edge here, so the lowest point of the knife is right here, it should be flat, but you know, a $45 knife, I guess you can't complain, next one is this one, it's from Forge for the table, nice box, a nice knife, a beautiful handle, look at this.

Our beautiful blade is a VG 10, which is a very common type of steel used in Japanese knives. It's also high carbon stainless steel, meaning it has the hardness of a high carbon knife but also has that stain resistance. or rust very good balance look at that, much lighter than the other two knives, but perfect balance, yes. I really like this one, this one costs more vg-10 steel, that's really good, so they are all the same style of knife. 8 inch Japanese Guto, which is a knife that everyone needs, so we will do a few different types of tests with these knives, first we will try to cut paper and see if it can cut paper and then we will move on. to some vegetables then after we catch all the vegetables we will go back and try to cut the paper again to test the edge retention.
Ok let's see how the $40 single bevel knife started and the thing about the single bevel is that you only have it for right handed people, if you are left handed you want the single bevel to be on this side so this would only be good for right-handed people, just a note, okay, see if you can cut some paper, oh, that's it. pretty good, nice, it's smooth, it feels very smooth all the time, look at that, oh wow, oh well, that's a pass that really works well, fresh out of the box, all right out of the box.
I haven't sharpened or anything. So this is the $45 knife, let's see if you can make this one even smoother, in fact this one does feel smoother, but hey, that's a pass, that's great, now let's try the last one, the vg-10 From Forge, on the table, oh yes, yes. Well, everyone passes, this one feels very good, in fact, I think the one that felt the best was this one here, which is the $45 famine knife. Next is the tomato test. Here I'm going to cut just the bottom part first. It feels good, see if I can fit in, this?
Ooh, look, it looks, it looks pretty good, it's very thin and a cup pretty easily, let's just cut the rest of it up and we're not going to throw away any of these vegetables. The $40 stainless steel knife so far, very good. now let's try this one, we'll do the same, that feels good, ooh yeah, even softer and even thinner, they both feel really good, this one feels a little softer and let's go with the most expensive of the bunch, a vg- 10 out of $70. Guto, okay, exactly the same, super thin, super sharp, maybe that easy. Okay, so far I'm pretty impressed with these cheaper knives.
Let's go with some cucumber. Now I'm just going to cut it into three sections so we have a good amount. All the knives, okay now, let's do a quick cut ready, well, that's pretty good and I'm trying to use the whole knife like I'm cutting with this section. I cut this section. I cut with the tip just as far as. everything, you know, and then we'll test it at the end if you can still cut paper. Now what's the $45 knife? I can feel this one is sharper, this one is definitely sharper, but the weight of it is a little weird. it's very heavy on the side of the blade, you see you want it to be balanced on where you're going to hold the knife, which is usually around there, but the blade is very heavy, much heavier than the handle, so it feel a little rare instead very sharp and the last one, the $72 vg-10 knife, feels very good, it's smooth for that round.
I like this one better, so it's really light and well balanced, so with vegetables, it's so good. use this is the $40 knife again, let's take a good look at it. One thing I do notice, since this is a single bevel knife, it is a little thicker and when you cut the onion there is a little more resistance because of that thicker blade, $40. I know you don't Nevermind, going back to the $45 knife is decent, but I feel like it's lost a bit of its edge already ooh, I don't know, let's see, let's keep using them all in exactly the same amount and we'll find out no, no.
Not crying because if you use a sharp knife to cut onions it doesn't make you cry, yes, now we are going to make the onion with the vg-10 from Forge to table, this is definitely the sharpest, yes, how am I not using the front of the knife I'm using the back of the knife to take out the vegetables if you use the front of the knife any side deviation there is a very fine tip so any little movement like that will bend the tip and make your knife hurt Well sometimes I do this, I pick it up like this, you know, but no, it's flat against the board, so we'll try to cut it very thin, it's like when you work as a sushi chef. like if you have to cut you always have to cut these green onions as thin as possible pretty thin not bad the only complaint I have is these letters on the back have resistance when I cut them so I get stuck a little so It's holding me back try it with the $45.00 knife we're going to use the blade a little more other than that no complaints I love the handle oh I think I think I know this one will be the best, very light so you can go very fast.
We've used each of these knives quite a bit, but not that much, so now I think I'm going to hit the board with it maybe a hundred times with each of them and we'll do that role. cutting test again so we can test the blade retention, okay so I've been using this cutting board for cutting right now, this cutting board costs more than all these knives put together, it's a really good cutting board , it really is soft and allows the edge of your knife to last much longer, but this is a cutting board that you would see more often and probably use a lot harder on the edge of the blade, so I will hit each of these knives a hundred times on this board and then we'll do the paper test, okay, okay, I'd say all these knives were used well now let's see if you can still cut some paper, so start with the $40 knife.
Oh, still So, how did the edge turn out pretty good? It's pretty much the same as before and now for the $45 knife, yes, it's still good, very good. Oh, I looked a little bit there, but yeah, no, that's fine, completely fine, still on the last $70 vg-10 knife, this one actually still cuts pretty well, but definitely. It doesn't feel as smooth as before but it still cuts well and I think that's because of how fine the edge was and how thin the blade is so yes I do notice a difference with this one but it's still sharp right now , it's still the same. sharp like the other two but not as sharp it was when I first used it so all of these knives worked pretty well but of the three I would definitely recommend the third one the vg-10 but it is currently the most expensive $72 , but our $72 I think this is a very solid knife and the other 240 and $45 are good too, so if you want something a little cheaper any of these will work, but I think this is the one I would choose if you wanted the cheapest . one is only a five dollar difference.
I think this one is a little sturdier and the $40 knife is pretty decent too. I just don't like that the tip is a little rounded, it doesn't have a point. I don't like. like that at all, it's also a single bevel knife, only good for right handed people and I'm not really a fan of this one here, it has a bit of grip when I'm cutting, other than that the blade itself is stainless steel, she is pretty. decent so if you liked this video make sure to like and subscribe and if you want me to do more of these videos check out kind of videos that will help you decide which knife you should buy and if you liked this type of one of economy style, let me know by the way, all of these are made in China.
I don't think you'll find any made in Japan that are under $100, but I mean, if you liked it, but the knife itself, the quality of the knives. The soaps are pretty decent, but I think the problem is that the awkward shapes are slightly uncomfortable and with no point at the tip, these are small details that wouldn't happen if it were made in Japan. The video is not over. I'm going to give away these three knives because what am I going to do? I don't need these knives, so I'll give them to you, whoever you are, no, no, no, joseline.
