Belichick-Brady relationship explored in new documentary, what's remarkable about Chiefs | THE HERD

Mar 15, 2024
Alright, welcome back to Julian Edelman, who has a very popular gaming podcast with names. He is trying to include me and I have rejected him twice. I'm really an idiot. Travis Kelce talked about it on the podium. I mean, we can't. I put you on guard. What is happening? I'm trying to get to the Super Bowl J. I get it, I get it, I get it, by the way, this is really interesting because if every dynasty has something, um and the Patriots. Dynasty was always considered the smartest, the most efficient, you knew all the tricks, you knew all the rules, so

what

do you do with the overtime rule?

How much should players know? How much shouldn't they know

what

San Francisco guys are like? We had no idea, did that bother you? I'm a big Kyle Shanahan guy, but I thought it was a party. You just have to get into the Super Bowl where you're smart. At least there should be a core of guys who know. the situation you'd be in if it came to that, uh, I remember in New England we went over the free throw every Friday at fast Friday practice, the free throw is where you can catch a punt and you can line up to have a free throw. before half of it hadn't been used since 1986, but we were prepared in case it ever happened and you know a lot of people say, well, you know a lot of these guys have a lot of information in their heads, it's a big week and You don't want to feel like that was my opinion, yes, but when you subconsciously know what's going on in the game, that allows you to instinctively play at a different level.

Something Belich would always say is you know you go over situations so it's in your subconscious so you can instinctively make plays on the football field for the right situations so you know. I don't think it's terrible that not everyone knows, but there had to be a collective group of captains, quarterback EK, these guys, I mean, there has to be someone who knows what's going on if we get to this situation, um, the clash with Andy Reid, yeah, now I don't think anyone is clashing with Bich and me. I will say Travis Kel is very emotional, yeah, what did you do with that?

You know the PSA for all the little kids isn't right, but on the other hand, if you're Kelce and you've performed like he has, uh, in the biggest games. You can do things like that and with the

relationship

they've developed over the last 12 years, I mean, we always knew they were like that and, uh, I didn't think it was cool, but I can understand coming. You know, a very emotional game from an emotional player who is probably the heartbeat of his team. Travis Kel is the heartbeat of that team when it comes to being that emotional figure, you see him shooting at guys on the bench all the time, so I didn't do it.

I don't like to see it, but I can understand it. I mean, I was there when Taekwon Underwood, you know, ran the wrong route in the backfield and Billy O'Brien and Tom Brady were fighting each other on the sideline, like this happens in war. of the game, you know, and I'm not trying to make light of it, you know, the battle people, but when you're in this environment, completely understand, when you're in that environment, a lot of things are said that you have to just rub You know, let it go through your head, there are a lot of things that you do because you have guys that are literally doing everything they can physically, emotionally and mentally to go out and play the best they can and, you know, I've seen it some time. and once again these things happen so a 10 part

plus um it's called the dynasty.
I think it's Jeff Benedict's book, which is a fantastic book. They were on Wall Street the other day when the opening bell rang, so it's getting a lot of play. so there have been previews of it uh apparently Brady is more forceful than ever. They were interviewed for how long probably about an hour and a half. I think they interviewed me for a while. I honestly don't remember what I said, so I want my popcorn ready by tomorrow to watch this because I'm interested. see if the preview of what we've all seen that's making everyone oh no one no one no one has a filter no one has the let's see what it looks like I really want to see what it really looks like who's talking what uh and we I also have to remember that someone is producing this from one side to the other, yeah, so we don't know if it's the real truth, well we think it's Jeff Benedict's book and it has multiple quotes.
So it's like the Michael thing if Tom is talking it has to be some truth, yeah definitely let me ask you this. You're a coach's son, so you came into the league as a grinder, so you could probably take more verbal sparring or attacks from a coach and you're good. with that, um, I think, like Brady, I always felt like, like Brady, the dynasty started, it was bills and then in those middle years with Randy Moss' numbers, then it was Tom's, in the end it was really Tom's, where it was clearly more valuable, is that fair?
Let's say when you joined, it had pivoted when you first got there, what did you feel was Tom or Bill? He was the soul of the culture. I always felt like it was Tom collectively as a whole, I mean, Bill as a whole and Tom. it was kind of like the offensive voice, that's what I felt when I got there, uh, you know, it was pretty common knowledge that everyone was at the table to get yelled at from the first moment when I got there, uh, it didn't matter who. It didn't matter what you had done, it didn't matter how much you won, if you did something wrong, it would be talked about in front of the entire team because that was what we were all responsible for. what we don't do well, um, so I always saw it as Bill's team and you know, Tommy was like the standard bearer of that team now, sometimes it was him?
Wes Welker said. He sometimes he felt a little abusive again, you and West, you know? you essentially replaced West so you guys were together briefly but did you ever feel like he crossed a line like Bill gave him a break yeah of course I mean Tom Brady was in his 15th year he had three Super Bowls, four Super Bowls, countless Super Bowls and and you know he would attack them, but you know he didn't change, that's what he did every year, you know, I think looking back, Bill probably could have handled it a little bit. different, but I think Bill thought he was doing the right thing, uh, and you also know that everyone on that team knew that Tom Brady played better angry, so I don't know if it was some mind tricks from a Jedi master that Bill is doing Like I honestly don't know because you know when.
Did you learn that? When did you learn that? Tom was better off angry. I found out about it probably like '14, when something didn't go right in that playoff run and he started attacking guys. I think it was that Baltimore game. We were down 14 points for the first time and you know Tom was getting really hot on the bench yelling at us and then all of a sudden you know he started playing, we started playing, it was kind of like you know Tom. He would fabricate things in his own mind to get angry or find motivation, right.
Jordan did, yeah, you know what I mean, so I'm not 100% sure if Bill didn't understand that too. because you know when Cam came in and he was my coach or he was coaching Cam the next year. You know he handled Cam differently because maybe that's what he felt Cam needed. Interesting, you know what I mean, so a lot of people have all this, oh. Beerus, right? He's not a collaborative guy. It's not this guy. He is not that one. I think he just pulls the strings and plays chess a lot more than people think. Well, Parcels was the great psychologist.
M bich was around him forever, forever, it's not difficult. finds out that Bill watches something, I mean, Parcels is almost a comedian on the sideline with his coaches, yeah, and I, Bill is a little different, he's more of a computer, you know, during game day because he would never come to coach you . necessarily hard on a game day because I wanted you to go out and play the game, I would coach you hard after the game when the game was over because I knew that even if we messed up that specific play, there were still two quarters of football left.
On the left, you can't just attack someone and have them follow you, that's right, that's how you know there's a lot of things going on behind the scenes that a lot of people don't know about, so no one has ever repeated which is hard to believe if you look at the The Steel ERS of the 70s or the Joe Montana ners or the Patriots Roger Craig didn't fail if you didn't fail, they would have threatened, that's right, giant, it's hard to repeat. Jimmy Johnson. I asked him about it before and he said that he converts. kinda my illness, secretary wants a raise, slot corner wants a raise, was it in New England or was it the salary cap guy who left as a free agent?
Why is three so difficult? Honestly, when we win 14, we start 15. think 9 and 0 10 and 0 uh week eight Nate's shoulder broke a left tackle PEC week 10 Deion Lewis runs through the ACL like a lot of things have to happen, your team has to being able to hold it together and then of course you get a little bit of the complacency that goes on with certain guys um it was always crazy to me that some of my best teams were the teams that we didn't win the Super Bowl we just weren't healthy enough, there was a crazy distraction that came along.
We didn't play our best football at the right time of year, and those are all variables that can happen, which is why it's so impressive what the Kansas City Chiefs did this year, and in these last four years, honestly, able to change teams that you know and change the identical identity of their team, go from an explosive offense to last year, figure out what's going on on offense and then this year, you know you have a crazy defense and a offense that made plays when I had to make plays understanding what you're understanding your identity and that's why they've become a championship team now they understand what they have to do to win, not necessarily the sexy, let's go out and do this, let's go out and let's do that.
I know when it comes to cutting time, what was Patrick Mahomes? He was eight out of eight. Okay, you're your best player when you need a big play on third down in the red area where Chris Jones was right down Brock P's throat, yeah. Know that this is the championship formula, your best players make the big plays when the team needs it. Hello everyone, it's me.
