May 30, 2021
Hey guys, what's up, this is Sarina from the reef diving communicator? Today we're going to spray paint an

ugly

brass

lamp

that I picked up out of thirst or probably cost about seven dollars, we're going to make it look fabulous, but before we can do it. any spray paint, let's go ahead and open up this bad boy, it's a spray shelter and we're going to spray paint it a beautiful white and let me show you exactly what we're going to do with the

lamp

shade, we're going to cover it. on pretty paper I love covering lampshades. I'm going to show you how to do it and also tell you about today's sponsor, which is Skillshare, which is an online learning community for creators.

There are business classes. Photography design. Many classes. Let's jump into this

makeover

right now. I didn't see that cat, so that's one of the trees in our neighborhood. His name is mr. gray, that's what I called him, he let you walk about two meters away and then he just ran away anyway. I have this lamp installed in the spray shelter, this is really the best place to spray paint because I don't want to have all the grass all over the yard now, before I start any type of project, whether it's spray painting or just painting , you need to get the right materials and clean it up, so definitely get some spray paint. gloves, some sandpaper that you might have to look at in a little bit and also a mask which is very important because a lot of times these little fine particles just float in the air and you don't want to breathe that stuff in, so here we are.

We're not trying to remove the brass, we just want to get a slightly rough texture for this paint to adhere to. I don't want the spray paint to stain those little parts, so I'm going to tape them off. that with some masking tape and then just cleaned up all the dust that was created during the sanding, so once that was cleaned it was time to spray paint. You're probably wondering if I need to use a primer. You can use a primer there is a metal primer that you can use. I just went ahead and skipped it.

I thought since I sanded it a little, roughed it up, it was fine, just make sure you're applying thin coats of spray paint, it will bleed. and it looks horrible and it runs so make sure you spray this in two thin coats and not one thick coat okay you're not going to believe this so I came home from class. I had the light off so I could make one. thinner layer and look what I saw look at that spray paint floating in the air and I'm not going to slow down this is real time these are heavy particles so even if you're outside wear a mask because these things stay in the air and it's not safe for us seriously okay so I sprayed the wire to match just make sure it doesn't stick to the tips now before we move on to the next part of this project which is making the pattern and the lampshade cover, let me tell you about today's sponsor, which is Skillshare.

Well, she actually has a class here on Skillshare and I'm learning different design tips from her.
She teaches you about color, how to understand color. wheel and what colors look good together and she also tells you if you like it, you know cooler colors like me, you have to warm them up a little bit using things like wood, brass, leather, so these kinds of tips are things you can do to It makes your home feel really nice and there are really no rules about what you can bring into your home. You can also join the workshops too, so I'm signing up for Emily's workshop and you know, I'm trying to figure out my design style because I question it sometimes, so let's get back to this project. This is the lampshade I found. It was four dollars at the third

store

. and I'm not a big fan of cone-shaped lampshades.
I generally like the drum shape, but this one is great for demonstrations, so taking my paper, it's actually drawing paper, which is great for patterns. I'm going to take my lamp and I'm going to align it with this now, the line that you see there on the lamp shade, which is just part of the lamp shade, but what I'm going to do is put it on that line and align it now with the next thing you do. What I am going to do is very carefully. I'm going to create a path that this screen will take.
I'm going to trace this with my pencil. Look, I'm starting from the top. You must be very careful. it doesn't go off that path, this is how we're going to create an exact pattern for this lampshade once it gets to the end and the end is when it gets to that line that we were using, I'm going to do the same for the bottom and I'm going to take exactly the same path again. I'll roll it until we get to the end, which is when we get to that perpendicular line once we get to that perpendicular. line, we'll use our ruler and connect those two lines, but then we want to put the lampshade back on at the end and we just want to extend that line maybe about half an inch.
These are the seam allowances that we're going to add to this pattern because remember this is going to have to fit around our screen and at some point we need to overlap it now you don't have to overlap it if you have an exact pattern you might be able to line them up perfectly but That would be a little difficult, so at the bottom and top I just left an extra half inch to account for the seams that will need to be folded and this is what it should look like when we're done. There are half inch seam allowances all around.
I did a little test fit, it looks like it's going to work pretty well and then it was time to take out the fabric. Now this is not fabric. This is not fabric. This is paper. Actually wrapping paper I bought in a

store

, but it's so thick that it really looks like scrapbook paper, but now it's a bigger size. The thing is that when you put several pieces together you will have to overlap or join them. Somehow the easiest way I figured out how to do this was to try to put them together and then you have to separate them a little bit at the end, this is where they will overlap and now I was going to do this with some spray adhesive.
Spray adhesive gets everywhere, so not only do you not want this in your house, you don't want it on your table and you don't want it on the good side of the paper, so you see how I'm parting ways. just a sliver, this is probably about an inch and then I'm just going to spray it now with this sticky side and that's it. I could attach another sheet of paper now. A couple of things here, if you have a pattern, try to match it as best as possible. you can, secondly, I think I left too much overlap here, one inch is too much and I'll explain to you in a minute why I think I should have trimmed this a little bit more, something else too.
I'm using masking tape, it's like for sensitive surfaces so if you try this with regular tape you will tear the paper so look below for the materials list description now once the pattern was ready the paper was Attached I had a huge piece of paper, it was time to cut it out, so I did it very carefully, making sure not to tear it. Remember this is just paper so when you cut and be very careful you want it to look clean and neat so once you cut it be very careful. was cut, it was time to make some marks, so I marked here on one of the corners, not just one of the corners, on one of the sides, where that line was, because remember that line is where it should meet on the lampshade. and that's going to be the starting point that we're going to use to try to get this to match perfectly, so I just wanted to make sure that it would fit, so I wrapped everything up one more time to make sure it fit, it looked pretty good. but the next thing we had to do was draw a line on the back of the paper.
Now remember we were drawing those lines that were that half inch long. I still want to make sure I have those same marks on the back because that line on the lampshade has to line up with the line on the paper and I just laid it out just to make sure that when I wrap this, it's going to add up, so the difficult part was just trying to line up that line. it came together perfectly because that was all depended on it so I applied a very thin layer of spray adhesive and attached it now this is where I started to get into trouble because I laid everything down and started spraying which is and that's what you're I was supposed to do it, but I realized when I was watching that I put it in and it was starting to roll and I noticed that it wasn't working very well and it had some bubbles and it just wasn't going right and I thought, "Oh my God, so you can see here." that I'm starting to try to accomplish this and I'm really afraid that my newspaper is going to break because I had already put a lot of time and effort into this, luckily it started coming out and I was able to You know, reposition this.
It was hard to figure out how to get it in the right position. Do I lift it up? Do I lay it down? And then what I ended up finding is that I just lay it on its side and tuck it in. This place worked really well and that's why it's so important to line up the first line correctly based on how you made the pattern and a. Once I got to the end I wanted to apply a little more spray adhesive to the back flap, so I laid it out on the table, gave it another small coat of spray, and then adhered it.
Now check the spray on the back in the instructions because sometimes they tell you if you put it on immediately within 15 seconds, it's a permanent bond if you give it time. to establish it, then it is more of a temporary link. I would say follow your instructions and make a temporary link that way. If you make a mistake, it's easy to do it now. The next thing I wanted to do is fold this part underneath, this is where you have to be careful because you don't want any lumps so you want to make sure you squeeze it tight but not enough to break it.
Now, at the top, you'll notice that I was taking the scissors. Making some raised cuts, this is so I can fold them over and secure them there now to cover them. You can use them as a bias tape. I wasn't a little sure what I was going to do, so this is what I did. I designed the pattern and I remember it had that half inch seam allowance. I just used it as a pattern and cut a little strip following that same pattern and that was going to be perfect for the top so I sprayed it with some spray adhesive. and you'll notice it's really short because I have to work around these metal parts, so I just did one section at a time and put it in place by just trimming it around the metal and then I did other parts as well.
Now here it is. Just make sure you do this very tight because you don't want any gaps showing from the top of the lamp. I also did the same for the bottom inside edge of the lamp again using that 1/2 inch seam. counter as a kind of pattern and I just cut a strip that I knew would fit well on the inside of the lamp and sprayed it with some spray adhesive and then made sure to cover all those raw edges. Here's the thing when I finished the lamp. I don't know if I really like this. I think it needs something, so I had some bias tape and I thought, oh, let me spray some bias tape without the spray adhesive.
It was messy, so I thought, well, glue gun, this is what's going to work. Now glue guns are great because they are just an instant bond, but make sure you only do it an inch or two at a time because the glue dries so fast that bias tape doesn't. Wait, I like how the bias tape gave it a little mm. You know it highlighted that beautiful floral, but you also know that glue guns can get messy too, so be very careful not to glue too much at the end. The most important thing was to check the lamp to see if it really works now, this should have been the first step, but you know, I just don't know, sometimes you do things out of order, but luckily it worked, now this is what the lamp looked like. screen before.
It cost four dollars at the

thrift

store and turned into this cute little floral lamp. Now I admit that this is not my favorite screen style. I like the more modern drum shapes, but just to show you that you can create a beautiful lamp out of something.of the third floor that you would probably walk past any other day, but with a little spray paint, some paper, and some spray adhesive, you can create something really unique for your family in your home and it doesn't cost much. of money, now the lamp, actually I think it was ten, I thought it was seven, but it was ten dollars, so four dollars for the lampshade, ten dollars for the lamp that has fourteen, the paper cost ten, so it's twenty-four dollars for a unique lamp.
You can't buy it anywhere. I mean, it's a great deal. Here's one thing I love. Look with the light on but remember the sewing. I told you that you will see your seams so be very careful with them, if you have seams like I ended up having make sure you turn them back so no one can see them or you only have smaller seams or if you have large sheets of paper, You may not even have a seam depending on the size of your lamp shade, so keep those things in mind.
