We had Iman sh and he spoke very highly of you, how you continue to be so impactful within the community, uh, what you do within Chicago, what you've done. inside that city um you know, they say that you spent all your money and that you were in bad times. I have heard contradictory things, but they say that other than that you have never changed as a person, you have always been you, they have always given you. you would give the shirt off your back even when they said you didn't have it you were still giving it so that's what makes me think but tell us about that moment and and you know with the money and and the problems or the problems that you had and how you were able to come out of that and reinvent yourself, obviously, there's some

to it all, so obviously I played in the league.

I was very lucky to have made it. plan over $108 million during 13e career um, I had a really good shoe business, so you know, I probably saw $130 million, um, so I made a lot of money in my career, but I also want to know what I also did a lot of good things with that, but I think when you hear guys talk about stories like especially Man Shumer's, they just saw how many times I'll be hosting events in my city. On a personal level, as well as my teammates, so I think everyone can always form an opinion because I lived a very expensive lifestyle. I mean, I come from a family. I'm the oldest of six men, so when I got it. I wanted to make sure they were good I wanted to enjoy it um so that was definitely a true part of my story uh I think obviously what happened to me and people don't talk about it anymore is that when I file for bankruptcy There was a situation in Las Vegas that it happened at the same time, so that's what made it seem really wow, he doesn't have any money, so I was in Las Vegas training, you know, Joe Bazard, working with the guys, stay there six weeks, man.

I lost a million dollars in six weeks playing, yeah, so I was like, man, how the hell don't I want to pay him a million, so you know what I'm saying, I'm trying to find the most creative way. way to avoid it um, so I took a purchase from him. I'm wondering how I can know, I mean, figure this out and end up working on the deal with him, but in the process of coming to terms with him. we know Las Vegas, you know the people, they, I was in Las Vegas, hanging out, what they do, the ISS should issue an arrest warrant because I hadn't paid yet, trying to speed up the process, so a lot of people don't You know, but they were. able to do that after 45 days um once they filed a complaint, they were able to know, actually issue a court order, so I was in Las Vegas, they knew I was playing in Las Vegas, I was actually in Nevada playing the tournament golf, um in Tahoe like Tahoe, you know? tournament where you see Steph and all the guys playing so I was playing the golf tournament and I went out the second night no no I went out the second night and the police approached me.

I'm talking about it's 2:00 in the morning. I'm drunk, I'm like I'm having a good time, they say we need to talk to you in the back. I'm like what I do, they say, well, we have a warrant, you know, for your arrest. I came to find out that it was in Las Vegas, there is no court order and they forced me to pay the money, so I had to pay 900,000 to be able to go out to that event like the next day, so the people of Nevada were very good to me, so that I ended up flying to Las Vegas and I ended up taking the situation and accepting a five year probation agreement and I had to pay them back 900,000 um, but I did it the way it was, it was very professional, they handled it the right way, they put me on the payment plan, you know, I mean 100,000, I know, I mean here, 150 this time, so it worked, but the negative press came after it, it was so bad, uh, everyone thought I was broke.

I was going through this great situation. I was just angry with myself. that I had to pay it, so I was stubborn and, you know, I went to court and I let the court play out and the court gave me, you know, a payment plan and I did it. I didn't want, you know, we don't want this. not writing any checks for not having 900,000 so I try to avoid that one for 480 yeah you know what I mean so I don't want you to not want that kind of check so it was an unfortunate situation that happened.

In the media, I really had the opportunity to really explain my story and it was something new that I was going through at the same time that this process was going through during Monon's three periods in Los Angeles and here's what happens. I'm very involved in a real estate business in Chicago, a real estate company with me and a friend of mine at the time and everyone knows that the 2008 recession here, yeah, I got caught up in it, so a lot of people don't understand. the way my company was created, that we would basically borrow money from the banks, so I would put together my personal

portfolio and we would borrow the money from the banks and then we would do our build, so once we have the business. everything worked itself out fine on its own, but I still have these loans that we have to pay off once the projects are complete and the recession hits, at the same time I'm going through this process and I'm thinking, man, this is like that too. a lot of bread coming out and just talking to the lawyers they said hey it's probably better, there's no way around it, you're the personal guarantor of this company, you're going to be on the hook for this, you might as well declare bankruptcy and just start over. and those are the instructions I received.

I was living in Florida at the time. That's one of the best places in the disgusting bankruptcy and I just took that path and that's where everything got there, but at the same time it was going. Through something that was actually real, the situation in Las Vegas happened, so people thought, "Oh, TW, he lost his money gambling." No, I lost a million dollars betting, but I also won a million dollars before two games, so I don't know what the bottom line is. The number is but you know what I'm saying so it went back and forth so it was discouraging because people thought it was that and obviously you want to explain yourself but you guys know how it is sometimes they just don't but especially back then, whether it's not necessary or you just have the right medium or the right platform to do it, you know, I mean, because back then what was said was that they swore that was the truth, no matter what they knew that there wasn't this kind of media to be able to sit down and tell this back then, when it happened, that's also true because um, like 12, it was probably the beginning of social media, Twitter started, like, yeah, that's how it was, so i did it.

I don't really have the platforms to actually do it. I remember doing a story, it's crazy. I'm sitting on your platform, ESPN. Jeremy called me to do an interview which is on the line, so I went to do the interview. I'm thinking. I will have the opportunity to get on this platform like we are doing now, speak and tell my story. He took the whole story and twisted it another way and that was it, that killed me right there, he made it look like you know Michael. Jordan and all those guys made me gamble, I lost all my money gambling, I never knew the whole real estate part of the business side so that was a little bit of a difficult part and that's what made me stay away from the media and really I want to have my own platform and make my own documentary and tell my own story, control your own narrative, yeah, so obviously, like you said, you probably surpassed 130 million going through what you go through.

First of all, what did you learn and what was your process of reconstructing the learning process? I thought I wish I had waited until I finished my degree to invest a lot, you know, trust someone. Also, especially with that kind of money, yeah, it was probably the biggest mistake and that's what I learned and that's why I always try to make sure I tell the guys that are in the league now that they're coming up, you know, we're folding. at a pretty young age, you know? I mean retire at 30 30 35 so you'll have a lot of time to invest your money in business and I think that's probably the biggest mistake I made is just trying to do things while I'm playing and not trusting people and not taking anymore you know the initiative of being in front of those types of deals and it backfired on me, unfortunately I end up with a business partner who ends up, actually, it's crazy how life works, ends up going to jail, but at the same time I bankrupt, ended up going to jail for something that had nothing to do with me, other mortgage fraud stuff, so I'm just telling you, I was with a bad, you know, we make some mistakes in life, you know bad people , not everyone is going to be. 100 and you live and learn, so those were probably some of the things I regret.

You wish you could end those moments, but you know you live and you learn and you try to move on and try to make it a learning tool. I always thought it should be a learning tool for a lot of other athletes because sometimes we all get caught up in it and focus on basketball and let other people take care of our business. We grew up on the south side of Chicago. They say the South Side got the offense and the West Side got the defense is it true, yes or no, yeah and um, look, I'm complicated, though Jack see, I'm from the Southside, but I went to Catholic school, okay, like that which was very, you know, I mean it when I grew up.

Gangs and drugs were really infested in the community and you know it was kind of hard to go to public schools, yeah, so no, my mom didn't want to let me go to public school, okay? So you know that sherhythm, now that the phone is ringing more, hey Twan, you know I want you to come for a week. I don't have to work as hard, now you know, I mean, because I put the work in for it, so you know, once football is done with the season, I'll do my runs, you'll see me, you know it all over Fox to call me , you know Nick, you know, Nick, those guys, my guys, they'll call me, they say, man, come for a week, come to a show, so I still have a voice of my opinion, you know, I called you.

I want to be able to be in the space that you like and be able to, I don't know, but I want to have this. kind of flat platform to be able to share my stories to share those kinds of things that need to be heard, you know what I mean, that's why I come across it. I still love the U game right now, I mean, I do all the

So he's in a better head space right now, so I'll definitely reach out to him so I can share some of his stories, wisdom and knowledge from him. He's great for young people, bro, him, I'll be impressed. My feet when he talks to those young people, brother, because he went through that. He came out of high school.
