I originally wanted to play drums, but they told me I had to play clarinet. I was basically in the choir. All my life I don't know why I can't sing for the life of me. My mom is a musical human being. She played the clarinet like the first marching band president with something like a hat on her thingy, so we went first. To choose an instrument, then we met with a high school band instructor and had classes and then we have to learn music and then we have to practice and then we have to put on a performance for our friends as a little halftime show, like this that now we had to choose our

instruments

We should have known in fifth grade, when Jasmine wanted to be a drummer, that Jasmine was also going to be a lesbian and now here I am a fully formed lesbian ready to play the drums. I think I want to play the clarinet. I want to follow in my mom's footsteps, so we're going to have a clarinet on the drums doing a song together. My real goal this

week

is to simply learn. I'm not going to be a professional, but I hope I can do it. at least I can play a tune, I don't know how I'm supposed to practice because my walls are very thin, the clarinets are pretty loud, maybe we'll go to an open field, so we get our

instruments

in the mail, here I am and here's my drum, so I have my clarinet in this box, let's open it up, I have drumsticks, oh, it's all in pieces, I guess that means I have to figure out how to put it together.

Mine came with three parts and two of those parts were the stand, so I just had to figure out that, oh my gosh, oh, they're tools. Does this part hold the drum? What should I call her? I wouldn't normally call her Betty, but we usually have a dog named Betty. Wow, I don't know how to do this. Here it is. my drummer, me and Betty Two, so I called my mom, who was the first chair clarinet in high school, the one in your left hand goes on top of this, yeah, I mentioned so many things I had no idea that mattered, she said, "Make sure you." they're like sucking on your reed for a few minutes before you play your weed it has to be exactly this distance from the top it wasn't in my head how come you ended up with clarinets instead of something else I wanted because I wanted to impress them so we had our first band practice with a real life teacher.

All my students call me Mr. T and I will show you both how to play our own quarantine tune or what I like to call porn. melody, I'm excited, Mr. T was so sweet, he was so sweet, so happy, he was one of those guys who, like you, just know he's a good teacher, I love it, I love it, he's so good when I heard the song For the first time, I was terrified. It was very fast and I thought: how am I going to make my hands move so fast to start percussion? He presented how I would like to hold my drumsticks and where the length should be when I stand up.
I was playing the drum backwards I thought it was reversible, you want to work on making the bounces consistent and that will give you a buzz and it will go down like this and you will have a couple of points where you will do it for two counts a lot of the time, I thought it was really very difficult that I was trying to get me to like reading this music. I have a really good way to break it down and that's if you say cheeseburger, cheeseburger, walrus, wow, so he taught me to basically not read the music because I wasn't going to remember it and he taught me that I just had to hit like a walrus with cheese.
The part that worries me is that role. What I like to do is take away the rules aspect so it was a walrus with cheese and fries. I'll memorize it much easier than the notes and he basically told me to practice the drum roll, but if you can't get it done by performance day then just go back to doing din while I had to get everything right, very gently press your teeth on. the other end and you have to be careful not to crush the cane and I want you to make a face like you just ate a lemon and then what you're going to do is just put air in it, wait, why? nothing happened, it took like 10 minutes just to make a sound on that damn instrument, it was so hard, that's okay, there you go, that's a lot of breath, yeah, you're going to have to push the air a lot, I thought that was the hardest part difficult of a clarinet.
I was just hitting it with my fingers and memorizing where they have nothing to do, like making a noise, yes you have to do it twice to make it sound like that, the beep was so bad it's a bad tutor, you're going to practice making notes practice while doing Another thing, the longer you play, the better it will be, so keep in mind to be patient, stay relaxed and have fun. Thank you so much. Okay, I just had my first class and I'm officially terrified, I'm getting somewhere, I can make a sound, oh boy, my neighbors are going to hate me, I have the music, I don't know what this music says, all I can remember is the cheeseburger walrus, the cheeseburger walrus, so my first practice was I was basically just trying to memorize the cheeseburger walrus and trying to go as fast as I could.
All I did was basically listen to the song and then recreate that, "Oh my God, this is so hard," I decided to call my mom because she was like she used my nose. to breathe how to use your nose on your diaphragm at the same time wait I think I did it let's see how long you can blow she made fun of me because my breathing was so bad she was like I could hold my breath for a note, for 45 seconds it's like if you were to fill this whole thing with air so that it makes a very clear sound, which makes sense, so I can't just inhale it, you know what I mean, honestly this is even harder. than doing exercise or a sport because it's like I don't even know how bad kids are at it, it's just so much dedication, really, everything I've heard from everyone I've talked to said this is one of the more difficult instruments to learn.
Playing just making noise is the hardest part and I'm doing well. I am very perfectionist. I say it in every video. I don't enjoy doing things I'm not good at, yeah, which I'm obviously not. good at that, but it's like how do you get a good special gift? I hope so, I hate it, it's not perfect, but it's something that the clarinet also produces so much drool, but not the clarinet. my clarinet to clean it and I dropped a lot of saliva. I'm trying to practice again. I'm trying to get the melody right, that was a little better.
I decided to take care of it and exercise a little because that. expand your lungs and I haven't been doing anything but sitting in my room playing Animal Crossing. I'm going out for a run for the first time in maybe over a year. This is the depth I'm going to go to be good. this damn instrument at this point I basically memorized the whole song but it was like it didn't sound right I can get the top part maybe if I go fast maybe they can't hear it's out of tune when you hear jazz playing the drums right that's it for Today, the time came when Lindsay and I were ready to practice together, ready, put your little lipstick on it, cute, this is how I practice, I could do the lace grease, I wet my crown in my mouth, I can't I feel very good with the clarinet?
There was something about getting together and listening to the song with the percussion that just made me lose control. We are

adults

playing this marching band song wrong. We couldn't finish practice. It was all my fault. You can't get past the first one, no, yeah, we practiced for a good hour together, I think we're going to get better, we're going to have another practice, I'm at the point where we just have to show up and We have to show up like that, so it's our last practice before our performance and since we haven't played in front of anyone, I invited Kate to come see us and give us any criticism.
Los Angeles, this is for you, yes, Kate made one. one of those things where we finished the song and your parents were like, okay, I know that voice, okay, you have a speed, yeah, and you just go and Lindsay goes slower than the song, you have to work together, our rhythm was Completely out of character, yes, Kate brought. It's striking to us that we're not playing this together, it seems like we're doing it so she can practice and be on time with you, she has to slow down, we'll go one, two, three, four, so that's what I'm doing. . one two three four Well, during our last practice before our performance, we finally came to the conclusion that okay, maybe it's not a good idea to go as fast as the original, but also not super slow because when we played it super slow it sounded . like we were playing a funeral march, a funeral march, I went home after that performance and tried to practice some more and I almost cried because I was so angry it sounded horrible.
I have fun with this when I sound good and when I don't sound good. I hate everything, it feels like I'm acting tomorrow and it sucks, like all the work I've done doesn't make sense, when in reality it doesn't make sense, it's like I'm not good yet. Lindsay is struggling a little just because she has to. I like to memorize things and learn to play this instrument when she makes a mistake she likes to stop we're not playing beyonce like no one knows this song no one knows if you're wrong I don't even know if you're wrong just keep going I have full confidence in her.
I really think she'll be fine. I think she'll be a little nervous, but we both are. You know, I'd like to go tomorrow and try to have fun and have fun no matter what. It's performance day, oh my god, it was a stressful morning, I was ready to perform, lo and behold, my damn uniform wasn't delivered, I wasn't stressed last night, I wasn't stressed this morning and now I'm wondering: where is my attire? We may have to make outfit changes. This is what we were supposed to use when I got mine. Jazz didn't get hers, but we're in this together, so we ended up wearing all black.
Yes, it's show time. How do you feel about your outfit? yeah, I'm a little sad we couldn't wear meaty jackets, yeah, if we sounded bad at least we'd look good, right, it's a less than a minute performance, how bad can it be? Well, no, never mind, it could be bad. Obviously we couldn't have a full band concert because we're in quarantine right now, we're social distancing, so we decided to become a little traveling band and visit some of our friends, the director, Elsa, oh wow, so we we turned into the back alley of the principal's apartment oh no, i think she enjoyed it a lot it was fun this one goes to joyce joycy was analyzing it maya started laughing yeah i just moved here and they're going to say she's going to get kicked out maya thought that we needed some work yeah one of the neighbors started clapping yeah thanks we love the support the drums are pretty over the top but uh Lindsay your clarinet is a little flat he says it was really good I enjoyed it that jazz, she's a drummer, uh-oh uh-.
Oh, I was disappointed in my sound in my performance throughout the whole process, but as long as we made them happy, we gave them a good show, we looked pretty, we did the best we could, in the end, but not least, yes, our band teacher , the moment has come, we are ready. to call the band instructor I'm ready to honestly this is over with lindsay she's freaking out over a reading it doesn't sound good we've been performing all day no one has paid us how are we going hey yeah, I like it, that's how it was It's not perfect, but he stayed impressed.
He was. They have a constant rhythm. They listen to each other. They are playing with each other and adapting. He said it means more that you were a team and came together. This is incredible. Thanks, my dream was to play drums, you know? And just trying it out a little bit was really cool, even though I didn't get to the sound I wanted to get to, I got to the right sound and from what I've

learned

it's good. I have always respected the band, the teachers, the band members, all the hard work and dedication. I didn't know this was literally a sport, it's an athletic skill, it's on another level that I've never fully

learned

.
