A STRANGER GAVE ME their BROKEN Twin Turbo BMW for FREE & I Fixed its "Engine Malfunction" foMar 02, 2020
Hi Sam Crack, I have a BMW 335i and it's been a great car. Personally I've put over a hundred and fifty thousand miles on it with no problems so far, it recently showed an
malfunctionwarning, and I haven't been using it lately since I bought a replacement. I enjoy watching your videos and I figure you might be the guy to fix it up and maybe give it a new home. I don't want a penny for it, but I'm just seeing if you're interested. Honestly Scott, now the name Scott doesn't sound like one of a Nigerian prince, but why would anyone in
theirright mind give up what I think is the best series 3 ever made?
turbo335i is super fast, they handle amazing, and you can use them. Every day now I am biased. I used to have one of these cars. I didn't realize how much I loved it until I sold it, so after reading this email, well yes, I was very intrigued, but before I could follow up. i got this video in my inbox sam crack this is just a quick video to show you the 335 if i its a project you want to make a donation vehicle great car i loved this thing but i love it so you can put it to good use oh oh my gosh it's a coupe and it's got that dakota brown interior the front half isn't wrecked like some of the salvage auction stuff I pick up I mean Scott what's the catch?
More Interesting Facts About,
a stranger gave me their broken twin turbo bmw for free i fixed its engine malfunction fo...
I entered the email. I took Scott's firm phone number and called him and you could tell right away that Scott is a super genuine guy. He told me he took this 335 to the dealer and tried to trade it in for a new car when he was offered $1,500 for it even considering its higher mileage and unknown mechanical condition $1,500 for this good one that's a terrible offer and Scott was smarter then they just let the dealer steal it but they
gavehim his new car and this had to be the craziest of all this in the next few days well I had to leave town for a trip and it happened where I was flying to solo about 30 minutes.
Utas far from where Scott lived, I mean everything was almost too good to be true here. what do you mean where am i staying gonna i'll leave the car before you get there and let's go to this point this all has to be a dream or a hoax it's ok it's pretty late i just got dropped off at the airport and what's in front of It's totally surreal to me this wasn't a hoax at all this is a 335i that Scott was generous enough to not just give it to me but deliver it to me where I'm staying it's sitting in front of me and I mean at first glance it's obviously very dark so You won't be able to see anything, but look, the water hits the hood of a car that Scott says has something like a hundred and seventy-something thousand miles on it.
It's got 40 or 50 thousand miles on it so the key look at this let's see it's got the key on the front drivers side t Look at this look at this and let's see here oh my gosh and then if nothing better Than that brown interior, it's probably the best color they offered on this car and look, it even has. I drive my old 335 it didn't have I Drive and Scott also told me to wait in here look at this second key this is just surreal now let's see how it sounds because he obviously drove it here but he said there were some minor mechanical issues it sounds Pretty good for me, soon we'll have a service
enginewhich I'm pretty sure is the BMW equivalent, like a check engine light.
We also have a TPMS warning. I'm going too far because it's pretty late and which is unbelievable I thought it was a hundred and seventy seven thousand miles look at a hundred eighty five thousand miles when starting you may have heard a slight rattling noise that's the wastegate and it's pretty typical. Noise on these cars as long as rattling doesn't last very long nothing to worry about it was very cold outside and I noticed what looked like a slightly rough idle didn't seem to be jumping or revving but that could have just been me and the service engine light soon was stuck on the dash the whole time so if it was misfiring ok the codes have already been stored so no new lights as of that now an engine
malfunctionon BMWs it will also make the car hobble mode I just drove this car around the neighborhood at low speed so I didn't find anything really the car felt pretty good once we got to 25 or 30 miles an hour so far everything seems really solid I feel like it's Christmas morning all over again because my present is sitting here the BMW 335i
turboagain thank you very much Scott and it's snowing I haven't seen snow in years this is awesome but have or a floridi and i just packed tennis shoes and i'm not walking through t the snow we're gonna wait for this to melt and then we can get in the car and diagnose it see what's going on with those lights on the dash apparently in this weather snow doesn't melt so i took my own life in my hands got out and shook it all off the bmw then moved it to the garage so as not to
freeze to death as this car is totally foreign to us not just foreign due to the fact that it is a BMW from Germany. means it's just an unknown car Scott has told us that sometimes a malfunction light will show up here on the iDrive sometimes on the dash obviously we've got that service engine soon as we need to do a full scan and find out what's going on with this car what trouble codes you currently have in the engine control module and basically is it safe enough to drive because we're playing take this car all the way from outside Detroit where we are right now to Chicago that's a few five hour drive so before I flew out here I ordered Carly this is a d diagnostic tool and I've read a lot about these supposedly when it comes to BMW there's nothing better than this little guy here that just wirelessly connects to his cell phone so i didn't travel with any kind of diagnostic tool i just ordered this guy i think it's like 80 bucks and i mean look alo obviously it will ride very easily on the 3 series the diagnostic port is right down there so right here where the trunk release latches just take that piece off and then carly plugs in like any other diagnostic tool and she goes lights up right there so Carly should be able to not only give us dealer level diagnostics but also a coating which means you can change a bunch of features on this BMW and it not only works that for BMW it does for Volkswagen as well and Audi and it will give you all the trouble codes on almost any make and model so after downloading and launching the Carly app I started by doing a health check most modern cars have multiple modules and what What Carly is doing is scanning all the systems in the car to see what faults exist.
Carly ended up rating our mechanical health as very poor and
gaveus a list of trouble codes. The list is a great place to start. We have a lot. of things to figure out here first we have a misfire in the cylinder second there is a layer of boost pressure control and lastly there are a bunch of codes related to the dmt owl system now we will dig into all of this a bit later but based Regarding the trouble codes filed by Carly and considering how the car drives, this 335 definitely has some minor mechanical issues, but nothing major or catastrophic at this point. you can expose a lot of data about how the previous owners used the car the really important thing here you can expose odometer fraud as I understand it in BMW there are multiple modules that record unlucky mileage Lately it's very simple to change the odometer on many modern digital clocks, but since the car's mileage is recorded in more than one module, Carly will always know the actual mileage, in the case of our car, Carly shows close to 300 actual kilometers, which is consistent with the 180 five thousand miles on the dash and remember I mentioned Carly has dealer level coding on many modern German cars there are quite a few options that vary depending on the country your car was designed for and the options your car was ordered with Carly can code functions inside or outside the car as your wish now, every time you start this card, there is a legal warning on the iDr screen I've got to acknowledge and click to proceed to the next screen and start using I Drive by touching some options on my phone.
I just turned this little annoyance off and as you can see there are a ton of extra features that can be coded into the car, really customizing it the way you do. You want it. First I write good things about Carly on the BMW e90 forum, then I watched some videos here on YouTube before deciding to buy and I can tell you this is the real deal. I am in awe of how powerful it is for its price. Point out now that some of the coding features you saw us do are part of a premium app and even when you buy the premium app and piece of hardware here, you'll be in for a lot less than taking your car to the dealer to get the stuff. diagnosed so again still super profitable.
I've seen people actually use Carly to scramble the Rolls-Royce bell sound into
theirregular BMW because after all BMW makes Rolls-Royces and a lot of that stuff lives inside the car's software so this really unlocks full potential of your car and you can really customize it the way you want. It's now clear that I really enjoy using Carly, so I contacted them and asked if they could provide my viewers with a discount code. and they're going to drop it in the description option box below I want to thank you so much for partnering with me on this video and even if you don't have a German car if you go to your site in the description box you can go and put your make and model of the car you would use the most and it will tell you exactly what it can do for you, so again, big thanks to Carly.
I think they knocked it out of the park with this one now I'm in Michigan for about another 24 hours before we go to Chicago before we do we have a meeting with a very special person and that's Scott I guess the former owner of this car. I really want to make sure that he wants to give it to him, I think. Scott might have been freaked out by some of the problems the car had when he saw the check engine lights and all, and after diagnosing it, I feel like this is too good a car for him to give us.
I want to make sure. that he's totally cool with that before we run him out of town Scott has the 335 title Scott you're an amazing guy you've got a great story and a great car and that's why I want to make sure that you're really committed to giving me this beautiful car this car is your problem i hope you make it on the trip and if you don't i'm going to laugh when i see the video. Hey, this is a good problem. I really appreciate it. Damn, you're the man. Now, don't forget everyone. Click subscribe. video to the end all of that helps the youtube algorithm sam is the man i love watching these videos thanks sam good scott couldn't have said it better but seriously thank you so much again for your support and generosity you know one of the things scott told me initially is that he discovered and started watching my videos when he was recovering from a kidney transplant and hearing that was so humbling and really flattering when you think of someone watching your videos you just think maybe they'll pull one open on their phone from time to time on the tv but to hear someone was watching during recovery time something probably very hard for someone to talk to scott a little deeper he hadn't just had one kidney but two it's clear he's strong very kind and super generous and again I don't know what to say but thank you so much I want to say this whole experience has been so much fun for me and I'm so grateful that I can take this experience and c Share it with all of you the next morning I got up really early jumped in the 3:35 even with its mechanical failures and drove it all the way to Chicago on a barely six hour drive because I left at the end of a snow storm to meet up with my friend Alex Palmieri from legit street cars so we could get into the 335 find out what exactly is wrong and fix it again I see in this driveway I almost pulled out his diesel on the driveway and slid in I've done a live scan for Alex to review all the codes that Carly is showing us, our car has the one that worries me the most is with the codes for this engine and I already told Alex this dmt.
I'll pump it. I know exactly where it is located. I know exactly how. get to it so let's check it out should be really simple but i want you to tell me what you think about these other what you might think would cause this yeah so right off the bat we have a boost pressure issue so let's go go ahead, take the engine cover off, take a look at the vacuum lines or hoses, give it a good visual inspection,Making sure there's no shorting and that we've got a misfire code, but this is a good one, it's the number one four-cylinder, it's not. a random misfire code which means we can tune a cylinder pull the plug it could just be a $35 coil this one the others just come loose yeah there we go there we go so one hundred and eighty And five thousand miles is half decent, yeah that's good right?
Right off the bat there's puddles of oil right here so we could be l Looking at a problem with the valve cover that could also be your misfire all the right guy following all these lines and vacuum tubes everywhere I found one of them that's a little frayed so it definitely could be losing some air than the one right next to it a little better not too bad yeah I think this will create a little problem here you feel like it's also
broken. Oh, so what can we paste? Yeah, duct tape where I got a ton of vacuum tubes from my turbo car.
We can fix that very quickly and make the intake very easy to remove because you'll probably have to clean those valves. every once in a while as a service you know you can pop a nut nuts yeah long blast just make sure the valves are off it does it great yeah no bottle you can throw in here like probably so no oil the tip of this is good oh my gosh look all the way see that was the only clay ever made it's a nice enough cylinder that oh my gosh it gets soggy oh my god i can't believe only one failed not again the one failing is this is it unless it goes one two three four five six it's not one this is one two three four five six that makes little sense there oh my gosh they're all covered in oil Wow I mean that doesn't always mean it's going to fail you know yeah make sure it's not dielectric grease put on those when they're good yeah we're definitely going to start tearing this valve cover off , not to mention that Alex actually found her, but getting really close ho is hard to see but this will also help with the oil leak. and it goes down quite a bit that's right so oh yeah you can see it goes down a lot and yeah we'll rip it off I went ahead and ordered the valve cover assembly that comes with the new gasket we will be releasing. on some new spark plugs we're going to test our coil packs will clear the codes to see if anything goes away oh that's just to cover the guests getting stuck on that so this is where the pump right next to the exhaust comes out with a couple of bolts a couple of push hoses v very simple stuff a couple of minutes and i don't know if we're going to see much but we should be able to pull it out and inspect all the connectors and make sure they're not damaged and if everything looks good then We probably just want to replace these hoses and see no visual cracks or damage to anything.
It all looks very, very, I mean, for a car with that many miles, which you think even you know, regardless of the leaks and the other stuff looks nice. looks great 185 Lagoo on alex just brought home this thing is awesome on s65 so a v12 amg car with a rentec package i think this thing is like a quarter million bucks new and i got a chance to drive home it has an unbelievable amount of Look at those seats like it's unbelievable. He's going to put this on the test bench tomorrow. Will be putting a video on her channel so be sure to watch the legit trams but we have to get back to work on the 335 and thankfully FCP. gyroscope came in clutch overn teach us everything we need to get rid of all those pesky engine control codes and get the 335 running like new.
We have a new valve cover. The gasket is pre-installed here, as are six new spark plugs. DMT L pump right here all the oh em stuff and thank you so much for this right here this is a thin wall socket for our spark plugs because we tried just a standard socket and it wouldn't fit now I really wanted to make sure we have all oh um stop here you see it lasted like a hundred and eighty thousand miles and I know when it comes to valve covers you could get an aftermarket replacement this is just a little I'm talking maybe twenty thirty forty dollars more expensive than an aftermarket one but this is our OEM BMW which we know will last a long time of course the boss stuff here just replaces the Minh tarts so it doesn't say BMW but this is the exact same part that came out of this car and that's why I deal with FC Pierrot when it comes to repairing these German cars because the prices are great lifetime replacement guarantee if any of these things fail again you call them they throw in a new one and give you they ask you to install it on the car it's as simple as that and i highly recommend it if you are doing any kind of maintenance on your german cars check them out that's what i'm going to leave a link for FCP in the description box below , let's go ahead, we'll continue to clean the surface here, our contact surface for our joints.
I've already done a fair amount I've got to get in here really good but Alex gave me a really great idea as our spark plug holes remember it's hard to see but these are all full of oil basically we've got a tire brake bleeder here this it sucks fluid but it's got it working you only know one way here so we take this tube like this we put it in the spark plug tube and then all the oil so all the oil is clean from the spark plug holes here when we pull Oil caps don't just spill right into the hole and cause a big mess of problems so we're going to clean everything up real good and reassemble depending on the car some manufacturers require a sealant around certain areas of the oil cap the valve when reassembled in the case of the bmw I really didn't know so I pulled out the cheap master service manual it's a site I've shown many times in the past and working on n several cars this manual is around 20 bucks and it's one of the interactive ones you can actually look up the exact job and it gives you all the details you need to fill it out so in the instructions here you can see it just tells you that put the new gasket on and reassemble so no sealant is required these manuals are the exact same ones used by the dealer tacks they are available for almost every make and model and always save me a ton of time every time I show this hack I get a handful of emails from people asking if they can get a service manual so if you're interested in getting one I'm going to leave a link in the description box under the charcoal canister here with our DMT L pump this little section right at the end the black and white part here is what we're going to replace the common point of failure like we've discussed comes out with just three torx screws to here now on the forms i read this bmw pump replacement something like six or seven hundred dollars at the dealer this fc piero part i think it was around seventy dollars so seventy all three bolts should slide in here now maybe a little bit of PB Blaster might help get all of this into my drink right now, that's not good, but if we spin this, don't tell Alex we're doing it at his nice workbench.
Easy as that, at this point we have saved five hundred to six hundred dollars fixing it ourselves and really this part goes in and out of the car in just a few minutes when I did this on mine on the day I didn't. even put it on ramps or anything, that's how simple the DMT L pump is on 335 and most other BMW's. It's all assembled here in the engine bay, we just left the engine cover off, so when we do a first start in case there's something wrong or the wiring harness is missing or something, it's now easier to access.
I changed one in two coil packs as we had a misfire on cylinder one which could be for a million different reasons in the event it was a bad coil pack the misfire should now jump to cylinder number two and that will happen again, it will be an easy test for us, otherwise right now what we want to do is start this car, we're going to clear our codes, let's take it for a short drive and see what happens. fuel we have fuel from one of the fuel lines going to the injector wait a second it's not tight oh ok it's not tight let's check this out you know i'm definitely not the only one leaving a chance ok let's make it tighten everything fuel lines ok go ahead morally rev it up a bit man it runs good park this outside for the night as you can see there is snow on the ground so its pretty cold let's give it a head start Cold and our rough idle just went away, so it's really good.
Still, the service engine will soon come on because we haven't cleared our codes, so now we're going to show Carly and we're going to clear these codes and see if anything comes back. It's okay. He says we are connected. so back to health let's check again to see if he finds anything new, after our scan we got the same number of issues we had before we disconnected the battery so some electronic codes always showed up. It shows up on these German cars when it does things like dirty the battery so we're going to go ahead and clean everything up so we've gone from bad to good zero problems we found everything working properly at the moment and our service engine soon l As You can see, it's gone out of the... we're ready to go for a spin.
We are headed to a truly very special place. We have an hour of travel ahead of us. One hundred eighty-five thousand seven hundred thirty-nine miles. watch this is the perfect test drive to make sure all our engine issues have been
fixedwe have arrived at our destination no extra lights on the dash the car drove great now wait and see exactly where we are located in naperville illinois fluid motor union is one of the best known luxury and performance auto shops in the midwest. It is owned and operated by my good friend Oh J Lopez. Well, there are a lot of really unique and high-end cars here.
Oh J is the type of person to rise to any challenge and as a previous BMW Master Tech he knows these cars well, be sure to stay tuned because in our next video Oh J will take a deep dive on this nearly two hundred thousand mile 335i and tell us will let you know how well we really repaired it and what else might be needed to get this car back to 100 percent working order ok so I'll give you guys a big thank you for letting me use your garage and also basically do all the cover work valve for me.
I also want Alex to be seen on the real street. cars here on youtube on instagram its all linked in the description box below as well as on my instagram some new stuff may be coming soon and i always post it on instagram first so again here click the link on the description box well if you enjoyed this video or at least enjoy that gt3rs make sure you hit that like button thanks so much for watching see you real soon
