A STRANGER GAVE ME their BROKEN Twin Turbo BMW for FREE & I Fixed its "Engine Malfunction" fo

Mar 02, 2020
Hi Sam, I have a BMW 335i and it has been a fantastic car. Personally, I have put over one hundred and fifty thousand miles on it with few problems so far. It recently showed an

engine

malfunction

warning and I haven't used it lately since. I bought a replacement. I enjoy watching your videos and I think you could be the person who can fix it up and maybe give it a new home. I don't want a dime for it, but I'm just seeing if you're interested, honestly, Scott. The name Scott doesn't sound like a Nigerian prince, but why would anyone in

their

right mind give up what I think is the best Series 3 ever made?

335i is super fast, handles incredibly, and you can use it. every day now I'm biased. I used to have one of these cars. I didn't realize how much I loved it until I sold it, so after reading this email, yeah, I was super intrigued, but before I could follow it up, I got this video in my inbox Sam crack, this is just a quick video to show you the 335. If it's a project, you want to make a donation vehicle. Excellent car. I've been loving this thing, but I love it so you might as well take advantage of it oh my gosh.

It's a coupe and it has that Dakota brown interior. The front half isn't destroyed like some of the salvage auction stuff I pick up. I mean, Scott, what's the problem? I went into email. I took the phone number from Scott's firm. and I called him and right away it was clear that Scott is a super genuine guy. He told me he took this 335 to the dealer and tried to trade it in for a new car when they offered him $1,500 for it, even considering its higher mileage and unknown mechanical condition $1,500 for this well, it's a terrible deal and Scott was smarter than just They let the dealer steal it, but you got your new car and this had to get the craziest thing ever in just the next few days, well, I had to go out of town to go on a trip and it turned out that the place at The flight was only 30 minutes from where Scott lived.

I mean, it was all almost too good to be true. Here I let Scott know. We could meet when he was in town and he said to me: I'll make you something better. Where are you staying? And I ask him: What do you mean, where am I going to stay? I'll leave the car before you arrive. And at this point, this all has to be a dream or a hoax, okay, it's pretty late. I've just been dropped off at the airport and what's in front of me is totally surreal. This was not a hoax at all.

This is a 335i that Scott was generous enough to not only give it to me but deliver it to where I'm staying, it's sitting in front of me and I mean at first glance it's obviously a very dark place so you won't be able to see anything else than looking at the water. hitting the hood of a car that Scott said has something like a hundred and seventy-something thousand miles on it, looks like it has 40 or 50 thousand miles on it, so key, look at this, let's see I have the key in the driver's side front tire . on this look at this and let's see here oh my gosh and then if there's nothing better than that brown interior probably the best color they offered on this car and look it even has it.
I drive my old 335. I didn't. I have I Drive and Scott also told me waiting in here, look at this, a second key, this is just surreal, now let's see how it sounds because obviously he drove it here, but he said there were some minor mechanical issues, sounds pretty good to me. We'll soon have a service

engine

that I'm pretty sure is the BMW equivalent of a check engine light. We also have a TPMS warning. We need to give it a short spin and see how well it works. We will not go. too far because it's quite late and what's again amazing I thought it was a hundred and seventy seven thousand miles look at a hundred and eighty five thousand miles when starting you may have heard a slight rattling noise which is the wastegate and it's a pretty typical noise on these cars, as long as the rattling doesn't last too long there's nothing to worry about, it was very cold outside and I noticed what seemed like a slight rough idle, it didn't actually seem to be skipping or searching. revolutions. but it could have just been me and the service engine light was soon stuck on the dash all the time so if it failed right the codes were already stored so no new lights from that.
Now an engine

malfunction

on BMWs will also cause the car to go into limp mode, I only drove this car around the neighborhood at slow speeds so I didn't find anything. The car felt pretty good once we hit 25 or 30 miles per hour. So far, everything seems really solid. I feel like it's Christmas morning again because my present is out here, the

twin

turbo

BMW 335i again, huge thanks to Scott and it's snowing. I haven't seen snow in years. This is amazing, but I have a floridi and I only packed tennis shoes. and I'm not going to walk through the snow, let's wait for this to melt and then we can get in the car and diagnose it, see what's going on with those lights on the dashboard, apparently in this weather the snow didn't just melt, like this that I took my own life in my hands, went out and shook everything off the BMW, then moved it to the garage so I wouldn't

free

ze to death, since this car is totally foreign to us, not just foreign in fact. which is a BMW from Germany, I mean, it's just an unknown car.
Scott has told us that sometimes a malfunction light shows up here on the iDrive, sometimes on the dash, obviously we're going to have that service engine coming up soon and we need to do a full scan and find out what's going on with this car, what trouble codes fault you currently have in the engine control module and basically if it's safe enough to drive because we're playing taking this car from the outskirts of Detroit where we are now to Chicago is about a five hour drive so Before flying here I instructed Carly that this is a diagnostic tool and I have read a lot about this.
Supposedly, when it comes to BMW, it doesn't get much better than this little guy here that just plugs in. wirelessly to your cell phone, so I didn't travel with any type of diagnostic tool. I just ordered from this guy. I think it was like 80 bucks and I mean, look at it, it's really obviously going to travel very easily in the diagnostic port on the series 3. It's right down there, right here, where the trunk release latches, just remove that piece and then Carly You plug it in like any other diagnostic tool and it turns on right there, so not only should Carly be able to provide us with dealer level diagnostics, but with coating it means you can change a ton of features on this BMW and it doesn't just do it for BMW also makes it for Volkswagen and Audi and will give you all the trouble codes on virtually any make and model.
After downloading and launching the Carly app I started by doing a vehicle health check, most modern cars have multiple modules and what Carly is doing is scanning each system in the car to see what faults exist. Carly ended up rating our mechanical health as very poor and

gave

us a list of fault codes the list is a great place to start we have a lot of things to figure out here first we have a cylinder misfire a second there is a layer of misfire control boost pressure and lastly there are a handful of codes related to the dmt owl system now we will go into more detail on all of this a little later but based on the fault codes presented by Carly and considering how the car drives this 335 definitely has some minor mechanical issues, but nothing major or catastrophic at this point after health. check I explored Carly a little more, there is a really cool feature called used car verification which can expose a lot of data about how the car was used by its previous owners.
The really important thing here is that you can expose odometer fraud as I understand it. In BMWs there are several modules that record the mileage, unfortunately it is very easy to change the odometer in many modern digital clocks, but since the car's mileage is recorded in more than one module, Carly will always know the actual mileage in the case of our car , Carly. It shows about 300 actual kilometers which is consistent with the one hundred and eighty five thousand miles on the dash and remember I mentioned that Carly has dealer level coding on many modern German cars, there are quite a few options that vary by country.
His car was designed and the options he ordered his car with Carly can code functions into or out of the car as he desires. Now every time you start this card, there is a legal warning on the iDrive screen that you need to recognize and click to Go to the next screen and start using I Drive by tapping on some options on my phone. I simply turn off this little annoyance and as you can see, there are a ton of extra features that can be coded into the car, really personalizing your car. You want it. I first write good things about Carly on the BMW e90 forum, then I watched some videos here on YouTube before I decided to buy and I can tell you that this is the real deal.
I'm surprised how powerful it is for its price. Point out now that some of the coding features you saw us do are part of a premium app and even when you buy the premium app and the hardware piece here, you'll be on a lot less than taking your car to the dealership to even get things. diagnosed, so again it's still super profitable. I've seen people use Carly to encode the Rolls-Royce chime sound in

their

regular BMW because, after all, the Rolls-Royce is made by BMW and a lot of that stuff lives inside the car's software, so this really It unlocks the full potential of your car and you can really customize it however you want.
Now it's clear that I really enjoy using Carly, so I contacted them and asked if they could provide a discount code to my viewers. and they are going to put it in the description box below. I want to thank you so much for collaborating with me on this video and even if you don't have a German car, if you go to their site in the description box you can go and enter your make and model of the car that you would use this on the most and it will tell you exactly what what it can do for you, so again, big thanks to Carly.
I think you guys knocked it out of the park with this one I'm now in Michigan for another 24 hours before we head to Chicago. Before we do, we're meeting with a very special person and that's Scott, I assume the former owner of this car. I really want to make sure. he wants to leave it. I think Scott might have been scared by some of the problems the car had when he saw the check engine lights and all that and after diagnosing it I feel like this is almost too good a car for him. to give it to us I want to make sure he's totally okay with this before we run him out of town Scott has the title to the 335 Scott you're an amazing guy you have a great story and a great car story and that's why I want to make sure that You are really committed to giving me this beautiful car.
This car is your problem. I hope you can make it on the trip and if you don't, I'll laugh when I see the video, hey. This is a good problem, I really appreciate it, damn you are the man, now don't forget that everyone clicks to subscribe, thumbs up on the video, watches the video until the end, all of that helps the algorithm Youtube. Sam is the man that I love watching these videos, thanks Sam, well Scott, I couldn't have said it better, but seriously, thank you so much again for your support and generosity. You know, one of the things that Scott told me initially is that he discovered and started watching my videos. videos when he was recovering from a kidney transplant and hearing that was so humbling and really flattering.
When you think about someone watching your videos, you think maybe they open one on your phone every once in a while on TV. but to hear that someone was watching during a time of recovery, something that is probably very difficult for someone, to be able to talk to Scott a little more deeply, he had not just had one kidney transplant but two, it is clear that he is strong, very kind and super. generous and again, I don't know what to say, but thank you very much. I mean, this whole experience has been so much fun for me and I'm so grateful to be able to take this experience and share it with all of you below.
In the morning I got up very early, got on the 3:35 train, even with its mechanical failures, and took it to Chicago, a trip of barely six hours, because I left at the end of a snow storm to meet with my friend Alex Palmieri from Legit. trams so we could get into the 335, figure out what exactly is wrong with it, and fix it again. I see in this driveway. I almost took the diesel out of it on the way and slid it. I have done a live scan so that Alex can review all the codes that Carly is showing us, our car has the one that worries me the most is this engine, engine codes and nowI told Alex this dmt.
I'll pump it. I know exactly where it is located. I know exactly how Let's get to it, so let's check it should be really simple, but I want you to tell me what you think about these other ones, what would you think would cause this, yeah, so right off the bat we have a boost pressure problem. , so let's go ahead, remove the engine cover, take a look at the vacuum lines or hoses. Give it a good visual inspection. Make sure nothing's cut and we have a misfire code, but this is a good one, it's four cylinder number one, it's not a. random misfire code, which means we can focus on one cylinder, pull the plug, it could just be a $35 coil, this the others just unbutton, yeah, here we go, here we go, so one hundred and eighty-one Five thousand miles is half decent, yeah that's good.
By the way, there are puddles of oil right here, so we could be looking at a valve cover issue that could also be your misfire, according to all these vacuum lines and tubes. Everywhere I found one of them that it is a little frayed so it could definitely be losing some air than the one next to it, a little better, not that bad, yes I think this is going to create a little problem, here you feel that it is also

broken

. Oh, so what can we glue? Yes, duct tape where I got a ton of vacuum tubes from my turbo car.
We can fix that real quick and make the inlet very easy to remove because you're probably going to have to clean those valves. every now and then as a service you know you can pop a nut, nuts yeah a lot of time just make sure the valves are closed it does it very well yeah there's no similar bottle you can throw in here probably , so there is no oil. the tip of this is good oh my gosh look all the way look that was the only clay made it's a good enough cylinder to oh my gosh soaked oh my gosh I can't believe just one failed, not again, the one that fails is this is like this, unless it's one two three four five six no, it's one, this is one two three four five six that doesn't make much sense, oh my god, they're all covered of oil.
Wow, I mean that doesn't always mean it's going to fail you. I know, yeah, make sure you don't put dielectric grease on them when they're good, so yeah, we're definitely going to start ripping this valve cover off, not to mention Alex actually found it, but getting too close is hard to see, but this will also help. oil leak, I see that crack right there, yeah, right here and it goes down pretty far, that's right, so, yeah, you can see it goes down pretty far, so yeah, we'll rip it off. I went ahead and ordered the valve cover. set that comes with the new gasket, we'll add some new spark plugs, test our coil packs, clear the codes, see if anything goes away again, oh that's just to cover for guests getting stuck on it so here it is where the pump is fine, the side of the exhaust comes out with a couple of bolts, a couple of push hoses, very simple things, a couple of minutes and I don't know if we'll see much, but we should be able to take it out and inspect it. all the connectors around and make sure they're not damaged and if everything looks good then we probably just want to replace these hoses and we don't see any cracks or visual damage to anything, everything looks really, really, I mean, for a car with that many miles , which you think even you know, regardless of the leaks and the other things, it looks pretty good, it looks amazing. 185 Lagoo on Alex just brought it home.
This thing is awesome in s65 so an AMG v12 car with a rentec package. I think this is like a quarter of a million dollars new and I had the opportunity to drive it home. It has an incredible amount of power. Look at those seats. Is incredible. I'll take this to the test bench tomorrow. He'll put a video on his channel, so be sure to check it out. legit trams, but we have to get back to work on the 335 and luckily the FCP gyro was activated overnight. Everything we need to get rid of all those pesky check engine codes and get the 335 running like new.
We have a brand. new valve cover, the gasket is pre-installed here, as well as six new spark plugs and this is our DMT L pump right here, all oh em stuff and thank you very much for this; Right here, this is a thin wall socket for our spark plugs because we tried just a standard socket and now it didn't fit. I really wanted to make sure we had everything. Oh, stop here, you see it lasted like a hundred and eighty thousand miles and I know when it comes to valve covers. you could get an aftermarket replacement, this one is just a bit.
I'm talking maybe twenty thirty forty dollars more expensive than an aftermarket one, but this is our OEM BMW, we know it's going to last a long time, of course, boss stuff here, these just replace Minh. pies so it doesn't say BMW but this is the exact same part that came off this car and that's why I deal with FC Pierrot when it comes to repairing these German cars because the prices are great. Lifetime replacement guarantee if any of these things ever fail again you call them they throw you a new one and ask you to put it in the car it's as simple as that and I recommend that if you are doing any kind of maintenance on your German cars, you check them out, that's what I'm going to put a link for FCP in the description box below, let's move on, we'll continue cleaning the surface here, our mating surface for our joints.
I've already done a good amount, I really have to get in here. Okay, but Alex

gave

me a really cool idea because the spark plug holes remember it's hard to see, but they're all filled with oil. We basically have a pneumatic brake bleeder here, this sucks up the fluid, but he has it running, you know. In a way here, so we take this tube like this, we stick it on the spark plug tube and then all the oil so that all the oil comes out of the spark plug holes clean here, when we pull the spark plugs, the oil does not pour directly. the hole causes a lot of problems so we will clean everything very well and refit it depending on the car, some manufacturers require a little sealant around certain areas of the valve cover when reassembling in the case of the BMW I.
I really didn't know, so I pulled out the cheap amo service manual. It is a site that I have shown many times in the past and that works on several cars. This manual costs about $20 and is one of the interactive ones you can look for. for the exact job and gives you all the details you need to complete it, so in the instructions here you can see that it just tells you to put the new gasket in and reassemble it, so no sealant is required. These manuals are exactly the same as the dealership. The studs used are available for virtually all makes and models and always save me a ton of time.
Every time I show this trick, I get several emails from people asking if they can get a service manual, so if you're interested in getting one, I'll leave a link in the description box under the charcoal canister right here with our DMT L pump, this little section right at the end, the black and white part right here, that's what we're going to replace as a common failure point. that we've discussed comes out with just three Torx screws right here on the forms. I read that this BMW pump replacement something like six hundred or seven hundred dollars at the dealership this FC Piero piece I think cost about seventy dollars, so seventy.
Bucks, three screws should slide up here now, maybe some PB Blaster could help get all of this into my drink right now, that's not good, but if we spin this, don't tell Alex we're going to do this on your nice workbench. Just like that, at this point we have saved between five and six hundred dollars by repairing it ourselves and actually this part goes in and out of the car in just a few minutes when I did this on mine in the past, I didn't. even put it on ramps or anything, that's how simple the DMT L pump is on the 335 and most other BMWs, everything is assembled here in the engine bay, we just leave the engine cover off, so when we do a first boot in case something is wrong or a wiring harness is missing or something that is easier to access now.
I changed every second coil pack as we had a misfire on cylinder one which could be for a million different reasons in case it was a bad coil pack the misfire should jump to the cylinder . number two now and that again will be an easy test for us, otherwise right now what we want to do is start this car, we're going to clear our codes, give it a short drive and see what happens. I turn it off, I turn it off. turn off, turn up, we have fuel, we have fuel from one of the fuel lines that goes to the injector, wait a second, that's not tight, oh, okay, no, it's tight, let's check this, you know, definitely, definitely not I am the only one who leaves one. possibility ok i tightened all the fuel lines ok go ahead morally rev it up a little man it runs good park this outside at night as you can see there is snow on the ground so it's quite a bit cold.
We'll give this a cold start and our rough idle just disappeared so that's really good we'll still have that service soon engine on because we haven't cleared our codes so now let's open up Carly and clear these codes and see if there is something. it comes back fine, it says we're connected, so let's go back to health, let's check again to see if we find anything new. After our scan, we had the same amount of problems that we had before disconnecting the battery, so some kind of electronic codes that always appear on these German cars when you do things like mess up the battery, so let's move on. and erase everything so that we have changed from bad health to good health.
Zero problems and we found everything working correctly. At this moment and our service engine soon turns on, you can see that it has gone out of the - we are ready to take it for a spin, we are heading to a really very special place, we have an hour of travel ahead of us, one hundred and eighty-one five. one thousand seven hundred and thirty nine miles on the clock this is the perfect test drive to make sure all of our engine problems have been

fixed

we have arrived at our destination with no additional lights on the dash the car drove excellent and now wait to see exactly Where Located in Naperville, Illinois, Fluid Motor Union is one of the Midwest's best-known luxury and performance auto shops.
