The Countess of Wessex is very interested in several Commonwealth causes, including the elimination of avoidable blindness, which she recently visited Malawi. I was looking at the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust's trachoma initiative in Malawi. She literally just got back from a trip to South Sudan over the weekend where she held the International Women's Congress.

Nobody Telstar can't stop me darling, if you're ever in trouble I'll be there immediately just send me a call my love is a laugh even when we're apart no matter how far away we are if I ever need it as fast as I can baby , below, a thought for the British world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, my name is Anthony Alou fme lashes, any Joshua and like many of you here, I am a son of the Commonwealth.
I was born in Watford and my heritage is Nigeria. I come from the Yoruba people, who are the largest and, some might say, the loudest ethnic group in all of Africa. I am proudly Nigerian and proudly British and stand in a long line, perhaps too long to count, of UK citizens of Commonwealth origin. who have made enormous contributions to this great multicultural society of ours in my world which would include names like Joshua Watts e-learn Sokoli and Ramla Ali, but there are many more members of the Commonwealth family, including David Adjey, one of the Kingdom's greatest architects United. the MFE has arguably the smartest family in Britain and of course the countless nurses, teachers and doctors who made the UK their home strengthening the very fabric of our society and our economy.
We must never forget either our Commonwealth cousins who stood shoulder to shoulder in battle, not to mention the amazing impact that all these people from the farthest reaches of the world have had on a great cultural sense of national identity. My own eyes were first opened to this amazing family when I traveled to Nigeria as a child and saw some of them. similarities between our two countries given our shared heritage as nations, there was a huge difference and a world of exciting possibilities the realization of which has stayed with me all my life, like me, so many children of the Commonwealth have two homes, two identities, two cultures and two ways. to see some even have more than two today we hear so much about division and difference that some might be tempted to see it as something bad or, on the contrary, it is something beautiful, something to be celebrated and appreciated and a great source. of peace and stability in this world of extreme connectivity, who better to connect us and shape our common future than the children of the Commonwealth who have a foot in two sides and desperately want both sides to succeed?
There are moments whenthat it is important to talk about values our personal values and those that unite us as a place as a society and this is one of those moments justice determination tolerance respect understanding I like many of those values in the ring but I apply them to my daily life our values define us and how we behave, what we put into it, what we put into the universe and what we will receive in return. Respect for the dignity of our Commonwealth cousins and all human beings is essential to uniting our society and our communities and making them prosperous.
I feel that opportunities must be there for the taking, along with hard work, dedication and perseverance, regardless of one's background, we must collectively strive harder to create unity. It takes a village to raise a child and, in the same way, it takes an entire community to act to come together to face some of the challenges we face today with unity and a shared vision, we could help improve the

The star names I have already mentioned will be perfectly placed to help with the Commonwealth's enormous potential to be unlocked by re-engaging with the Commonwealth and acting as ambassadors for the two cultures and countries we represent. 1.4 billion young people will transform our world for the better in the same way that boxing gave me the opportunity and framework to become Olympic Champion, Commonwealth Champion and now World Heavyweight Champion, but I wonder what the Commonwealth.
The second part of that word is key for me. David Hoyle giving the blessing marking the end of today's celebration service for the Dean of the Commonwealth, appointed 39th Dean of Westminster in November last year, before that today he was Dean of Bristol overseeing his first major state event, one of a regular calendar of big events. which take place here in Westminster Abbey, a peculiar royal under the direct control of the Queen, the Dean responsible only to the sovereign. Wow, and the clergy moved toward the west door, 30 boys in the choir, all of whom attend the environmental residential choir school. 12 professional adult singers focus primarily on singing the daily choral services at the Abbey, a tradition dating back more than 600 years.
James O'Donnell, organist and master of the choristers, now listens to the sub-organist Peter Commonwealth holder Mase Darien Marine of Trinidad and Tobago holding the mace is the current chair of the international youth-led working group for the Commonwealth Youth Forum to be held in Rwanda and in front of it, the flag of the Commonwealth, Ellucian. She had a nervous Nigerian carrying that Commonwealth flag, Prince Charles and the Duchess. of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, as we heard this afternoon, this will be the last time they will appear in public before stepping back as senior members of the royal family Allen, Countess of Wessex Spring and the rear of the royal group.
The clergy there the mace a royal anniversary gift of trust to the Queen and her role as head of the Commonwealth for the 40th anniversary of her accession to the throne is made of gold and silver covered in small studs with the flags of each country of the Commonwealth 53 countries I believe are represented in the mace now 54 members of the Commonwealth after the reintroduction of the Maldives into the Commonwealth Valley just over a month ago while Robert Hartman has been with me this afternoon here in Westminster Abbey so many things to think about Watching this service first we see all the main players in the royal family led by Her Majesty The Queen and they all play some role in the Commonwealth.
All I said was that Petro has a long, lifelong connection with this organisation, but no one other than the Queen herself can thank the clergy for their role in a service which, as we previously discussed, she helped greatly to create herself. . reverend christopher adults his minor cannon a presenter leaving westminster abbey, but has been very involved on a day to day basis in organizing this service, the reverend mark birch mana cannon and Sechrist and the reverend jennifer peterson and the chaplain here at Westminster Abbey and the dean, the new dean, will have to get used to important events like this here in this The Abbey Church is real and peculiar, this National Church, yes, as a dean, you really find yourself in the heart of the other national history, the other may be president of the royal society of the Commonwealth, I mean, this is a place that is quite apart from the coronations of themonarch.
It's very often here for services and the national Thanksgiving, we have VE Day in May, the Queen of the Pacific marks which we see here behind all the other members of the royal family, the Prince of Wales, and namaste as he says avoiding a handshake. Of course, next week he will go to the Commonwealth himself. Last year he will visit Cyprus. He visited 20 Commonwealth countries. Just in a year's time there will be more of the same this year, right behind him, the Duchess of Cornwall, of course. who chairs the Commonwealth Essay Prize, the world's oldest writing competition, so all these threads coming together before our eyes, we've just seen the Queen greeting Alexandra Burke, who entertained us this afternoon, Craig David and breaking at the end of the championship.
Boxer Anthony Joshua, who I think spoke very interestingly about the Commonwealth and about his role as someone who has a foot in two sides, both British and Nigerian, and how that is an experience for so many people within this Commonwealth of Nations . I thought it was a wonderful experience. speech, as he said before, he was a little nervous about it, but I think he just captured the essence of the Commonwealth, there are no two ways of looking at life. I think that's very important. The Queen is clearly delighted to meet him, she walks out through the Great West Gate onto the steps outside the Abbey, thousands of people watching, you can't see them, they are behind barriers across the street, but many people turned out to support this event as she is presented with corsages, we hear the bells of Westminster.
Abbey ring and I think her second Robert just to reflect on how important the Commonwealth has been to the Queen throughout her reign. There have been many occasions when she sided with the Commonwealth on the advice of her own British government minister, exactly who she is. she has really taken care of him during his childhood, when he came to the throne, today there were only eight members of the Commonwealth 54 and Bamby many. There are obstacles along the way and there have been times when the organization has found itself at odds, sometimes splitting into two. , sometimes just trying to find her place and the Queen has always been there in the early days of More breh house being the secretary's headquarters.
In general, it was the Queen who gave one of the family homes to this organization. It remains the heart of royal life and there is no doubt that the Commonwealth benefits greatly from the Stardust that Her Majesty the Queen and other members of the royal family. spray it, it might not even exist if it weren't for this direct royal support, it has been said in recent years, as the coal moth has receded, we have to accept that it is not power right away, but it is having members of the royal family like Cambridgeshire and the Duchess is to have that royal Stardust, as you say, patrol that just gives that little bit, it's a unique organization and in a world of so many organized multinational organizations, whether it's the g7 or the EU or a technology or the OPEC or whatever the Commonwealth is about has something unique, today we have a flavour, it operates in a unique space and has the Queen, the all-knowing head of the Commonwealth, at its heart. its leaders, hundreds of leaders who have now been in charge for almost 70 years, Prince Charles, behind the Queen, who will take over as head of the Commonwealth and clearly shares many of the views and concerns that Commonwealth countries all face the days.
Many issues, especially those related to the environment, are very important. to him and they are a matter of life and death that some Commonwealth nations are and over the years the Commonwealth has found itself at odds on many issues that might arise, it can argue over the smallest things but It was absolutely unanimous since 2018 that the Prince of Wales would be the next head of the Commonwealth, it's not automatic, it's not a hereditary title, but they wanted it and they know that all these nations know how close the environment is to their hearts. The queen gets into her car to return to Buckingham Palace.
Other members of the royal family go all night to a reception celebrating the work of the Commonwealth such as the Duke of Cambridge in conversation with Anthony Joshua. During Joshua's speech you can see a reflection of what he was saying among the younger members of the Royal Family and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will we ever see them in a situation like this again? Robert, we've talked a lot this afternoon about how this is your last public engagement before you step down as a senior. members of the royal family and how will we see them next?
Well, it's certainly the longest time in a long time. I hope we see them at this type of event where protocol executes everything we see the Queen has. leave first and Prince of Wales visa first as a pecking order for everything you literally line up now that's the world they're walking away from they won't leave the royal family so they certainly won't leave the Commonwealth fair Prince Harry leaves Be talking to a lot of people here at the Abbey today just a different way in the future it won't be like his royal highness it won't be on these state occasions no fisticuffs they're great David yes it certainly is Took a step further than the official guidance , sir, but that's Prince Harry and of course it's a sad moment.
I think there were moments during that service where you could see that he seemed thoughtful, he seemed studious, this is all he knows. This is a world he has grown up in and there will be a change when they move into this different phase of his life at the end of the month. In some ways it must have been an anxious day, as we said at the beginning. The first time the entire royal family has been together since the announcement was made about the prince's change of situation, being there with your brothers, your father and your grandmother, it must have been quite complicated, well, it's the first time .
In public, but of course privately, they have been talking to each other and I think that underlines the fact that you move on two levels: the personal and the institutional, and here in the show we have them as a working family. in public, but you know the family ties are still where they are, you can go to Cambridge of course, they have to leave before the new sausage drivers, that's how it works, it's a pecking order and that's one thing. That it won't change that Prince Harry still has six and nine years on the throne, but this type of protocol is a kind of waiting while one loads, having to wait for the next one, which will be a way of life that will just move on for them .
Now, but he'll be back, I mean, you know, next month, hopefully, depending on travel plans, but hopefully, right now, the Duke of Sussex is due back in London to mark the start of the London Marathon. and we will see them continue. on a charitable level, but not on this kind of formal level, we have talked about fifty-four members of the Commonwealth now is that or do you think it will grow even more, there is always a queue and there is the Duke of Sussex himself. when he was in South Africa in southern Africa on his last tour at the end of last year he visited Angola now behind the scenes are the discussions Angola was never part of the British Empire never ever a country that does not speak English, but there is another country that has seen what the Commonwealth can do for that part of the world that they are in line to join and Prince Harry will have played his part in that and Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister, with Kerry Simmons, his recently announced camp. let's say, and he is someone who is clearly going to work to build a great relationship between London and the Commonwealth, that has not always been the case with the Prime Minister's recent medical report, no, it is certainly John Major, he was very, very pro-Commonwealth , having lived in the Commonwealth Sussex congratulated Anthony Joshua on his speech, but in the Tony Blair years that was a dereliction, no doubt the Foreign Office changed its approach entirely.
I think I sometimes forgot what the FCO headquarters meant, but it's back to being the Foreign Office and Commonwealth Office now I think one of the things that stood out to me today has been the large number of young people involved. I mean, most of the artists are quite young, but you see children in school, girl guide scouts, etc., participating in this Commonwealth Service, as Anthony Joshua said in his speech, if you can enable the enormous Commonwealth's untapped potential, 1.4 billion young people, can transform our world for the better. That sums it up, doesn't it? And so it is possible. don't leave, you know, they, in many ways, the organization that they represent know the Queen's Commonwealth, they trust that they are still presidents, vice presidents of that, that these are young people, as they are, in fact, the Commonwealth Games, the next big Commonwealth event coming to Britain and me.
I suspect we will see them both perform in 2022 in Birmingham, it is the next Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Games are held around the Olympic Games, they take place two years between each Olympic Games, of course they are not so big, but they are enormously significant. Into the city, I remember going to the Commonwealth Games when they were in Manchester, an amazing and important event as it's in Birmingham in two years time and I actually like the Invictus games which the new Go will be attending Sussex in May. They are not like the Olympic Games and the Commonwealth Games, often called friendly games because there is an extra dimension to these shared bonds and now I think this is a moving and very significant moment.
I think this is a moment that you will see. on many front pages tomorrow as the couple as they are not only saying goodbye to these young people on the steps of the Great Way store but this is certainly au revoir if not a deer, I think it is a revoir to a way of life from which they already they will certainly not be part of it for the foreseeable future, but not in an era where just this morning the Duchess of Sussex met exclusively with the Commonwealth with the Commonwealth universities, yes, a partnership in which she is very much involved and which brings together hundreds of universities across the Commonwealth and helps them work together, helps them exchange learning and staff information to exactly over 500 universities, the world's oldest university network dates back to 1913 and the Duchess remains a very active sponsor of that in the same way. that Duke himself is involved with so many other Commonwealth charities that, as it's going to change, this is the time, right? they prepare to get into the car that will take them out of the Abbey, away from this big public event this afternoon and away from public life or at least real formal public life, they will be the next time we see them.
It'll be more of a cheesy Harry case and I'll still keep the HRH, but they won't use it, effectively heading into slightly uncharted waters that members of the royal family haven't been in before the Queen. wants to do it like give it the best possible chance but there is a 12 month review just so we can see how it develops in the meantime this is the traditional face of royalty the beloved countess of wessex Doon what the Royals have done to over the centuries. and I will continue to do so, and with a very passionate and specialist interest, the particular interests of the Countess of Wessex that we have been hearing on issues relating to sites across the Commonwealth.
Robert Harbin, thank you very much. Thank you Dean Ron for joining us here at Westminster Abbey this afternoon.
