Jun 13, 2024
Rosenthal. Paul's biggest question today is what happened to his twin sister Jill.   He believes that Jill may have been murdered in 1965, but he also holds out hope that she is still alive. Perhaps Jack and Jill were abandoned separately at the same time, and Jill ended up with a new identity like him. Paul was unable to question his biological parents, Gilbert and Marie, about the

mystery

, as they had died in 1995 and 1997 respectively.   They both died of cancer and were 61 years old when they died. Paul has received messages from several women who believe they may be Jill Rosenthal, but so far DNA testing has failed to find her.   In March 2020, Paul filed a missing person report for Jill with the Atlantic City Police Department.   He also commissioned a composite sketch of what Jill would look like today.   There were no photographs of Jill when she was a baby, so the artist relied on other photographs of the Rosenthal family, as well as Paul's own appearance.   Although he and Jill were not identical twins, his former nanny Susan Wohlert had said they looked remarkably alike.

For as long as he can remember, Paul felt out of step with those around him.   As an adult, he found it difficult to put down roots and vacillated between jobs and relationships.   He partially attributes this tendency to a genetic predisposition, as other members of the Rosenthal family have led similar lives. But Paul mainly believes that his restlessness was due to his lack of sense of belonging. By meeting some of his biological relatives, Paul finally met members of his family who looked like him and shared his interests.   One of his cousins was a talented musician and shared Paul's passion for music.

But Paul's true sense of belonging came when his daughter was born. Paul's commitment to solving the mysteries of her families was also made for her, to give him more information about her own heritage and history. And it was also done for the family that raised him. Initially, Paul's investigation drove a wedge between him and his adoptive parents, who did not want to bring up the past. But over time, this allowed Paul to get closer to them and discuss things that had not been said for decades. Paul interviewed his mother Dora for his second book. During her conversation, she told him about the first moment she met him when he was a little boy in New Jersey.   She quotes: “The truth is, from that first moment, I never doubted that you were my son.   Over the years I noticed the differences...but even then, I never questioned it...I loved you and was always proud of you, so why would I question it?   “You were the son we raised and that was it.”
