'87 Suburban Intake Leak and TLC "Ema2.0" - NNKH

Mar 19, 2024
What's up guys? Welcome back to the channel. In this one we're going to revisit Emma 2.0 and do a cooling system flush and fix the

intake

leak

and then a bunch of other TLC maintenance, so this is the kit we picked up. in Las Vegas and Road I ran into Jen and Gus, it's a great time and you can see the rust is already turning now that we're back on the wet coast, you know, it rains a lot more here so we're eventually going to have to do something . I know people are not a big fan of the patina and she really deserves a paint job, but anyway let's see if this works and then let's start with the main problem, the cooling system

leak

, let's see how.

The progress of things has a ton of parts, new gaskets and look at that pump turning on, oh yeah, that's some reliability. It sounded like a healthy Chevy 350. The brakes are a little touchy from sitting. You see, I'm enjoying the new open garage concept. It's outdoors, it's nice, but yeah, I hope to have it ready by the end of the week. It's the plan. We'll see how well everything goes. Yes, you always have to remove this

intake

. I saw some comments on the first video about the stripes. In this they were saying that the back panels should have been replaced, but that's not the case, you can see, I mean, the red was there at some point, but something with the sun faded, you know, the red came off and became blue, so you can.

More Interesting Facts About,

I even see that there is Eminence of Red there and here, so yeah, well, this is what the ribbon looks like when the sun is raw today. I don't know why she only did it on the back, but unless someone hits her with something. Like I don't know, you guys maybe know better than me. This is all due to the hail storm. It looks like sap in there, but it's really just dissipating the mist. Now the leak is at the top, between the headers and the manifold. I hope it's not like that. It doesn't mean that this aluminum sump is all corroded and pitted and start by draining this.

I'm telling you, it's a lot of fun to go up and get it all and this pile of junk can't build the garage soon enough. Oh, there it is, it's full of garbage, okay? Great, it's super nasty, oh yeah, I forgot how much water I put in this system, what's the other big reason we're doing this? Because on the trip it was always very low, we just filled it with water because we thought there was a leak. It was worse than it really was, thank you. I'm going to go ahead and drain the block should also be clogged.

There is a strange side that has a clogged coolant sensor as well. I don't know why I'm picking it up. practically a pure water well, it's the first time in a long time that I took the cover off and saw a little corrosion. Oh yeah, I've seen Corey sitting around for 20 or 30 years and there's nothing there like look at this tip. It's actually where the rotors still burn out. Better look at it, yes you definitely have a new cap and rotor. I didn't mean for water to drip in there, but we need to change the oil anyway.
Otherwise it looks very healthy. I'm actually surprised there is so much sludge in these ports with TBI injection. Look at how small the cooling ports are on this compared to a big block, but anyway I'll absorb the rest here, cover this, and then clean up this really good waste. time, here's the break where you have a leak at a gasket, it actually looks like it's a little deteriorated and at the inlet, yeah, it doesn't look like too much corrosion, clean this up, done, I don't have my Air Compressor Setup, but we can tap it lightly with a light-duty wire wheel.
You don't want to go crazy with this aluminum. Yes, we have some slight pitting around the jackets, but it is totally usable. Normally I would use a 3M roll lock. disk to clean them instead of a wire wheel, but the nice thing about wire wheels is that they tend to expose the pits a little better, you know, honestly, we'll probably put some proper silicone around this. together just to be safe and I know sometimes people frown on that but if you've been in the industry for a while then you know it's better to be safe than sorry, look we got that clean, hit it with some Super clean, I scrubbed it and pressure washed it. and you know, this should probably be sandblasted, but hey, we'll hit it with some black paint called the day, also, the EGR ports were completely blocked there too, you cleaned all the ports, which took longer than I would like. to say and now it's time for you to know how to plug this and take the valve covers off, you see, this has the same thing, like a really baked sludge that doesn't even pressure wash, we're going to have to do it, yeah, let's give them a paint work.
Also giving you all my love, although today is such a nice day, take a break sometime, enjoy the good weather, you know, anyone can put together the difficult part, clean everything and be tidy, that's what takes the most time . part there is with any type of gasket replacement, you already have newer looking gaskets, it's so bad, but we are going to replace them because they were leaking weird, now they are ready to hit with some paint, but I was just checking my paint. bin and it doesn't look like we have high temp black except for these old things from uh probably when I was a teenager and it's all lumpy coming out oh let's run to this door satin black Rust-Oleum motor enamel and I'll do it Foreign guys know that I don't normally do a lot of cosmetics, but in this case you know what the heck, why not and while everything is dry, I think we'll go take Gus the man to the park because you've been a good boy. all day just taking a nap on the couch right yeah don't you sniff he says where are we going this is not the normal place it's weird too it's the guys from the dog park having fun with them sniffing oh Man, they're all crowding you guys. eh, okay guys, better change of pace for you, go for a little walk in the woods, sometimes the dog parks and gets a little shy, you know, it takes him a while to warm up there, oh, This is more his style, huh, oh, yeah, he is. happy puppy what are you digging for who's there do you hear noise what did you do I will say these came out pretty well considering it's only been drying for like an hour and the paint is already there you can't even scrape it off with your finger You know, he didn't go crazy , clean the inside out, just the big thick stuff on these intake gaskets.
I'm going to go ahead and use Permatex, the right thing instead of what they gave me and they gave the RTV gray felpro, uh, but I prefer this. I've been very lucky with him and that's why he's sitting on top. I'll do a little smear around each of these cooling ports and then a little smear on the intakes there, but in that pitted part and you know, some people say. oh, you have to put them dry, but don't trust me. I've done it, I've done it both ways and I've never had a leak, making a very small Right Stuff spot, not a bunch and a small spot, no.
Anyway, that's nothing to see here. I was just a little OCD, I cleaned everything, they even have the right material between the copper joints, that way we won't have leaks, this is what a stain looks like, enough to fill the little one. uh, corrosion cracks and then of course on the block that you make, it's like an eighth of an inch bead or so, no, it's all the dirt that came out the next day. We are ready to fill ours. It is always a good idea to let silicones cure overnight. If you have time but you can push and go, it's never a problem even if you don't have time, so we'll use nothing but the best 50 50 Peak antifreeze.
I actually sponsored this video, so thank you. Big thanks to Peak for sending me a bunch of coolant and a few other things that I'll show you later. They now sell a flushing additive to clean out all the sludge and other stuff in the system, but everyone has to say yes. I don't think flushing the coolant system is a good idea unless you have a problem you are trying to fix, like a clogged heater core, many of the rows are clogged red and it is overheating, but if you only have this, this light accumulates everywhere. the system like it's not hurting anything, you saw how clean the water came out, when it's mostly clean water from the bottom of the red when we drain it, you go disturbing all of that and then you'll end up with a claw or a leaky water pump , I mean the way I look at it is all this, this Gunk is what holds the system together unless you have a problem.
I don't recommend it, it's like with an engine flush, uh, if you have stock lifters and stuff. We're trying to fix it, yeah maybe that's the case, but otherwise leave all the sleds right where they are guys, that's my personal opinion. That being said, I recommend flushing the system with a garden hose just to get all the loose sediment out, whatever people may say. oh don't use garden hose water because it has minerals in it but hey listen this is all oxidized minerals and calcium here and start unless you have a perfectly clean system and they were a car yeah maybe don't use a garden hose of garden on that, but we're going to run this, then distilled water, then cool it, here we go and yes, I'm throwing this on the ground because it already has pure water in it to begin with, so if you have antifreeze. in your system definitely pick that up in the pans you see it comes out as a very very slight brown and we'll just run a lot of gallons through this and then start running it on that as well to clean the heater core hoses until it comes out clear.
I took the thermostat out just now, so we run it through the inlet that flows into the block and out both sides until it's clear. Once we are done with the washing, leave the drains outside and use an air compressor. To blow, try to remove all residual municipal water. You can also use your mouth and you know, blow it on the spark plug wires, but empty out what's in the heater core and throughout the system and we can fill it up. with a few gallons of distilled water, a dollar a gallon at Walmart and this is essentially water that has been evaporated or distilled so that it is free of minerals and deposits.
I must take the time now too. I did it. I marked the distributor when I took it out, but I'll check that it seems close enough for now, so I'll let it come up to operating temperature and complete this with the water sealed once we get all the air bubbles out. It already looks like mud water. there, with the flow crossing, the thermostat comes out, the water pumps work fine, uh, free store. I used to have a 97 Chevy S10 with 4.3, you know, they had cold covers and such a dirty system, I want to say 10 times. Worse than this and it was having some overheating issues so I went ahead and did all the washing probably like five six times and then every day for a month I took it, filled it with water in the morning and drove it for 15 minutes of working drainage. at work, filled it back up with water, used just normal water and it kept coming out muddy no matter what until finally one day it came out pretty clean.
I put antifreeze in it and sure enough, I ended up having a water pump leak shortly after. That, of course, could have just been from letting the water run in there all the time, you know, it doesn't have any lubricity, no leaks so far, let's go tear it up down the road and see if I can get a temperature sensor. of the coolant. because it broke at the top and you know, turn off the thermostat, mess with the rest of everything in the system so we can drain it one last time and also set the time to zero degrees, the base time wasn't too far off.
There she is a ripper, what do you think, Mr. Gus? Nice Cruiser, check this out, we parked right next to a Scottsdale with the same paint job, man I thought I recognized that truck, how's it going? How have you been now, look at that paint job it's beautiful. These match, what are the odds? Hey man I love the Bulldog up there man I love the Bulldog yeah the Mac Max keeps the colors okay Isaiah you guys might remember from the trailer video they have the sensor for the input and I. grabbed two yucky 10 bucks can't get over it oh yeah built up good pressure no leaks something gross packed in that desert slime yeah we'll let it cool a little while we wait we'll spill the oil I should definitely do that after the long drive home you know which they usually use Rotella, but someone actually sent some Pennzoil 10 30 high mileage, three gallons, uh, why not use this?
Many thanks to whoever sent this. I will definitely put it all up. for good use, I should be able to depressurize it now still a little hot, but strange, I put the bottle back. I cleaned it and put silicone on the whole seam because it had like a couple little tears in it, uh, because you spent, you know, 80 or 100 bucks on a new one, but oh man, this old sensor stuck here I probably should have taken it off when the entrance was off. I broke down, there she is and now the rewarding part of putting new Peak 50 50 coolant in there, these are all thevehicles.
I've never had a problem with that before, here we go, oh, doesn't that feel good? Oh, wait a second and put on our Lyle funnel and suddenly things are even more satisfying. Yes, there are three gallons. I started. Let it burp, let's advertise. this is ten times as many scale inhibitors 10 years 3000 or 300,000 miles well that's burping something else that's been bothering me is that you stick on Stripes you know they're like they hold water behind them and I guess you could get some new ones of these, but I'll keep keeping the old ones for now and then we'll remove them somehow, but yeah, I mean, in this climate it just holds water behind them.
There we go and I don't know how well you can see it with that paint original, it looks so good that's why they put this here, it's just to hide that strip, it wouldn't look good at all without it, I guess it would. Okay, but you see how all the dirt and stuff was getting left behind, same thing up here, this pinstripe is just to hide the two different paint lines, foreign, that's done, the coolant bottle is leaking , although unfortunately I ordered that new tank on eBay 80 Bucks again I should have done that to start with but you know, to boost morale, throw out some windshield wipers and fill up the washer bottle because you know that makes everything better unless This also has a hole, oh, tell me it does have a hole.
You know, I was lucky it was just a hose in the back, didn't you know? Peak also made platinum silicone wipers. Perfect fit, although we also need a new windshield due to a crack. Oh, and something else they said in the first video. It was getting rid of this mat for noise and heat and, yes, I suppose it could be a fire hazard, especially once all the dust gets in there, but I mean the way it hangs, it's certainly a hazard of any kind. way to be absorbed by the belt. and everything else, let's turn that off, okay, let's see what it does if we put a little bit of fire on it.
You have to imagine if you also have soaked oil or gas sometime and it would be really flammable, yes, early, even with the dust inside. There it's fine with glasses meant to be fire, but you know, if they get soaked in oil and gas, it's another nice, cool story. Down here we will have to see how to order a new one. Next will be the brake fluid that we will use. I'll bring Jen here, help us wash it. I know some really exciting things, guys, right? But you know we're giving all the maintenance love here. The typical way I flush or maintain brake fluid is by draining, cleaning the reservoir, and then. open each bleeder, open the initial rear passenger, that's one, um, all the way to the front, uh, however, Jim said he offered me a special deal, special break leader in the house, yeah, five, five pumps a wheel, just for a motorcycle trip.
Later, the right thing to do is don't push the deal, yeah, let me put down half a chicken sandwich if you want that man, thanks, how long has he been there like two hours? Give it like five constant pumps, yeah, just like that. Full blows. baby, I think Gus found a stinky place, yeah, what, yeah, okay, wait one more wheel, oh Gus stinks real bad, he jumped in here and sniffs, we just gave you a bath, so we did what was 20 bombs by wheel or something a little dark. There's some nasty fluid coming out that looks good, get out of the truck, come on boy, you know it's the exhaust pipe.
Crossing around the back surprisingly, but I thought we'd get it in there real quick, just take a quick look and grease the chassis. everything fast fast so like this rust all this is new it wasn't like that when we bought it the brake fluid Washing come on have you ever seen a Chevy frame that looked like this? I don't know why I'm so surprised By these desert vehicles, but Immaculate, I mean, the only thing that would improve is if it were three-quarters of a ton, yes, the tail shots of the transmission escaped a little. The enemy could simply be the layup that you never really know might have been coming. from the elevator valley to up there and you drive down the road, he just explodes everywhere.
I have the manifold gaskets in the way because they are leaking, but no problem because only a few nuts that are not rusty. I stopped here. to throw away my old oil, this is all the brake fluid and motor oil and everything else, throw it here to recycle it, yes, change the spark plugs. I'm never a big fan of having these German made Bosch platinums, it's not like they're a bad spark plug. They just belong on a VW, not a Chevy. We now have some AC Delco cr43ts made in China. I think they used to be made in the USA and then I bought the exhaust manifold gaskets made in the USA.
Let's look at those, they're like graphite. The captain at 35 dropped copper anti-seize on the threads, done and then I'll put them in my spare spark plug drawer because they're still in good shape. Look at the old ones, they are falling apart and the Freshies with graphite. everything, uh, Annie sees those bolts too and no more exhaust leaks on the road, no more exhaust smell in the cabin, I should say perfect fit. I don't know if we're going to do this today and I thought I'd bring the E-bike do a little exploration parked behind this one, the Bolero, this used to be an AMF, but I'm totally digging the new paint job.
Oh, about to get hit by a car anyway, right behind here. I noticed on Google Maps that there are a good number of trails. I want to see what they lead to, what the technology is, uh, the people behind our house are back up here, which is pretty cool and it also looks like a complete dump, back here, place to bring dual sport back to the figure. I would analyze it. Ride your bike first, but these are well traveled trails, oh hidden gems, you never know where they are. Google Maps is the best place to find them or any satellite view brought me a stream here or something.
Wetlands because I don't see any other reason why this hasn't been built because it's all wetlands down here, it turns into a mud pit when it rains, let's take a little side detour, stay tied or you'll get applauded anyway, the reason for the race Going for a walk is going to drop this off at Jen's house. Oh yes, the car park. Yeah, I thought we traded the Suburban for the Torino. Nice Memorial Day weekend cruise. Let's give you a little love storage ambulance. The plan for this never came. It hasn't happened yet anyway, so I've been putting my ideas to good use about using Jen's yard as vehicle storage, but there are damn sheds in the way and I have a feeling if we move it it'll fall apart because There is a gopher marmot living. below and yeah, oh, and that's it on the Suburban for now.
I'm really glad to get the water out of the cooling system, clean it out and get it to the max, you know, thank you so much Peak for sponsoring this video, oh we did it. some progress, but obviously it's going to need a lot more. I'm starting to think I might have a problem, you know, I love keeping them, but it's probably a good idea to pass them on to someone else to contribute. The rest of the way, give it the paint job and give it the love it deserves and needs. The kind of plan I have with this is for Jen and I, if we're going to do another Flying Drive, thinking why don't we do it.
Just load this with our equipment and tools and then send it. I could ship it to Texas for probably $300. It's like why do we fly to get a rental car, have to buy tools and deal with all that when we can just ship? this down there so it could be in the future unless one of you is very interested and wants to make me an offer. They know I'm not going to sell myself for more than two thousand dollars. It's worth more than that. Let me know what you want. I think it's worth it in the comments, I mean, there's no rust and that's priceless.
I was even talking to Dalton in the Pole Barn garage about maybe sending them to him because he's the best guy I know if you haven't. I've seen his channel, check out PBG pole barn garage. She's the man so that's a possibility too but for now Torino is calling me and boy look at the sunlight and everything about her is funny, a guy stopped by while I was making trades. He is here. and he says, hey, that's what's been hiding under the hood and he was just admiring that wonderful piece of art on the car. I know some of you think mid 70's cars are ugly, but I'm probably forgetting to mention a few things, but Anyway, let's get to Reno now.
I know, intruder, that you don't like this car, huh. I know sometimes these videos jump around a lot, so thank you all so much for tuning in. Thank you very much to all the members of the channel. I appreciate the support. Everyone watching in the United States, don't forget to fly your flag on Monday and honor those fallen soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom here. Oh God bless the United States and we will see you abroad very soon.
