5 1/2 Mistakes We Made in Ireland

Apr 11, 2024
In this episode we'll tell you about five and a half

mistakes

we

made

in Ireland and make sure you stick around until the end to find out why the last one is only half a mistake. We will start first. with car rental bugs, I'll let you pick it up from there. We worked with a travel agent and had given her our printed itinerary and wanted to pick up the car on Sunday morning when we were leaving Dublin so we wouldn't have to. We had to drive in Dublin, we didn't realize she had scheduled it for Saturday morning.

First, it was our mistake not to capture it in the final copy she sent us. However, it was compounded by the fact that there were no one of the five different offices of our car rental company in Dublin - one was on North Circle and the other on South Circle - and the place where we were supposed to Rent it wasn't even open on Sunday, so when we told the taxi driver where we were going, he took us to the place that was open on Sunday. We didn't have a reservation there, so we ended up having to take a different car.

More Interesting Facts About,

5 1 2 mistakes we made in ireland...

We had ordered a compact car because we thought it would be a little easier to drive on narrow roads, especially when we drive on the left and feel uncomfortable, we thought okay, we can use all the space we can on the road, however, we don't They had one like that for us, there was a small surcharge. which we didn't expect, but it worked out well for us, even though we got a bigger car, I could fit in a lot easier with my long legs, so I think a compact car would have

made

me at least a little more uh. unpleasant, but we had to pay the moderate charge for the next size car.

Our lesson learned in this was that you should use two people to verify all the dates, addresses and details on your itinerary when you get it. and don't waste it on the second reading. Oh, the first one was fine, so the second one should be fine too because it may not be our second mistake. We'll put this under hosting errors. I misread the reservation document. the bnbs in Ireland I saw it said a room for two people three nights and then at the bottom it said a room for two people three nights I thought it was a total at the bottom no it was two different rooms for two people for three nights we knew something I was awake when we called to check that we were on our way and the hostess asked us if we had two different rooms and we said no no she said oh okay I'll take care of that so the next day our host said .

She had checked and that we had actually booked two rooms for three nights and she said that she could rent the room for two of the three nights, so they would only have to charge us for the extra night. Again it cost us a bit of money, we tried really hard not to let things like this ruin our trip, although at no point did we blame the Irish BNB because that was entirely our fault and just another thing to verify what it was. Our first problem with accommodation, the second, was during our stay in Bushmills, which was a historic property through the Irish Landmark Trust, because Bush Mills is such a small town that we couldn't get coverage for our internet while driving, so we could not.
I couldn't find the address of the property. I looked in my file where I had printed copies of everything and lo and behold, the address page was missing. We knew that Bushill was a very small town. We knew the property we were staying at was An. Old Mill and was on the river near the bridge, so we parked the car and wandered around looking for something that looked like that because we had a photo in our file. I'm glad no one called the police. We were walking on other people's property so we finally noticed across the river something that looked like a photograph we had seen of the lodge and then we turned the corner and saw the sign that said Bridge Street and we knew it was on Bridge Street and it was right there we found it the other thing we had in Bush Mills was on our last day there we were having a great time we went out to have brisket for breakfast we are walking through the town square we were all packed and everything and we received a phone call from our hostess and she says : um, the housekeeper came by to clean and said you're not out yet. no cleaning, thanks sleeping cleaning, we had thought the check out time was 11: and unfortunately it was 10: most check out times in the US are 11 or even 12, but this was the check out time departure at 10:00, so we were running around like crazy trying to put everything in the car and ready to go, we ended up leaving behind some memories we had. she picked up at Bush Mills there is Irish whiskey and chocolates so I hope the housekeeper enjoyed them or at least shared them with others.
Yeah, that was a little difficult, so the lesson from that was look at number one above, check all your details, uh, call the properties 48 to 72 hours in advance to confirm that you have the correct details and make sure you have copies printed out of all reservations, also due to some of the problems we had. Make sure you have a margin in your budget of about 20% because we had the car surcharge and then we had the extra night at the B&B, so make sure you have a little extra margin, a little extra money and make sure you bring two credit cards so if you need to put something in. on your credit card you can, it's not that stressful, you know your vacation won't be ruined because of this mistake, as far as the buffer goes, include that in your travel budget, that way you'll have it, you won't have to take it .
Take it out of the bank or anything and transfer things, you'll still have it and then if you don't use that buffer that you had in your account, then you'll save some money or you can transfer it to your next trip. It's true, our mistake. Number three, we were very stressed on the day of our departure because we received a text the morning of our flight saying we had to be at the airport an hour and a half earlier than we thought and we were probably 45 minutes late to it. It's already like that, so we were very stressed about the fact that he was about to have a heart attack.
We are waiting for the bus. We knew we had to go through security. We had to go through customs. We had had a problem the night before. Where again. We had received a text saying we had to go online and do an online security clearance that we didn't know about. We arrive at the airport and Chris is very calm in situations like this. I saw someone with a Lingus heir badge training a new employee and I approached him and asked if he could help us get through our situation here and he was more than happy to have come. 1 2 three explained it to the trainee made him do some of it they were excellent flying is for us They looked at our tickets and assured us that we were fine, that we wouldn't miss our flight.
We didn't realize that the time they had texted us wasn't the time we needed to be at the door, it was the time we needed. go through security and through Irish Customs because then they open US Customs. If you come back to the US, you go through US Customs in Dublin before you even leave Ireland, but you have to be there at a certain time before your flight or them. We will close the Customs gate, you will have to take another flight, it was very stressful, but once we got through Irish Customs, which was not a problem, we got to US Customs and we actually arrived 45 minutes before to go through US Customs.
We had to wait, which was fine, it gave us time to do some duty free shopping to replace the whiskey and chocolates we had lost earlier in the day. I think we had one last Guinness at IR Ro Guinness for the way, so that was nice. the lesson is that you don't know what you don't know, okay, we had done our homework, we had researched everything we could, but we had never been there before, so things like this that we had came up. there's no way to know again do your homework do everything you can but the bottom line is if you need help ask for it the irish are very friendly and always willing to help they always have a good sense of humor about things so again if you need help.
Ask around because they are more than willing to help and as far as getting through customs and everything, I think you can check out one of our videos. Yes, our video of our last full day in Ireland tells you quite a bit about that and shows you what. It looks like yes, we will put a card here that you can go to and that information card will take you to that video that shows you how to go through security and Irish and American Customs. Next on the list is Number Four, we missed a couple of things while we were there and some of them were foods we wanted to try and then there were a few places we wanted to see, especially in Dublin, that we didn't get to.
We had blown everything up. Night came at 5:30 in the morning walking through Dublin and around 11:30 or 12:00 and we were crossing under an elevated train and there was a bar, a pub and it sounded so lively at that time of the morning that I'm looking at Karen and we need to go in and see what's going on, but it was too early to start running out of sleep and, uh, we hadn't eaten yet, we'd actually had a bagel and coffee, maybe so that was it. One of the places I wanted to dwell on is that maybe this time or next time we can go in there and see what it's like.
We also skipped Trinity Library and really debated it. I feel like we should have at least seen the long hall of the CU Library. I'm a little sorry that we also missed St. Patrick's Cathedral, we did and it would have been nice to see that the meals we missed there were some things we missed. I really wanted to try Co Canon. and we will do it when we return. I know Karen was voting for now. I read about it and I have to try it, but Murphy's ice cream, I think it's from dingo, it originated in Dingle, but they have other shops with a flaky cone, yes, yes.
I've heard a lot about a flaky cone or a 999 as they call it yeah, a fish pie oh yeah, I'm not sure about that one now but I know Karen would like to try. Yes, I would like that, it sounds very good. We too. I had heard of something called a spice bag. I'm curious, I think it's, I read chicken with salt and pepper and then different ingredients are added with a spice flavoring. It's a deep Friday and it's shaken in a paper bag with the spices, I think so, but it sounds like a late-night product, kind of like White Castles here in Indiana, which is a late-night meal after you've been bar-hopping or you name it and you just need a big type of greasy food to absorb. all the alcohol right, the other thing was a t sandwich, we had teses but we didn't try a butter t sandwich, yeah that's another one I'm not sure about but we'll see, I'll try it, I'll try it.
The lesson from this is that you will never be able to see everything and do everything you want to do when you go to Ireland, that just gives you a reason to come back. Makes it number five, once again, you don't know. what you don't know one of the places we wanted to stay was the city and it was called Dairy London Dairy Dairy SL londond Dairy all the maps all the articles government websites we saw all said Dairy London Dairy all the Official stuff said everything it was made by Dairy SL London Dairy and we stuck with that, we thought we'd be more cautious about always calling it Dairy London Dairy, it wasn't really a problem when we were there, no one said anything. us when we said Dairy London D, but when we came back and started making our videos and called it Dairy London Dairy, then we started hearing about it, nothing unpleasant, no, we had some very interesting comments, we had the most comments we've ever had . on our site on anything in the last year again, you don't know what you don't know, so Chris, what did you find out about why this town is called both Dairy and London?
Well, as always, that is a very complicated topic. it was always called in the early days Dairy and then around 1613 the new King James, the first, had taken over the reign of the United Kingdom, the British kingdom, and they decided to change the name because the English had been sending British citizens there to start plantations with which I decided to add the name London to Dairy and so it is called London Dairy. Over the centuries it has been called London Dairy but locals tend to just call it Dairy most of the time, I think it has been discussed for a long time to this day. that they want to try to change it back to Dairy only and not add the London part to it.
I know there are very loyal fans who will just call it Dairy and never call it anything else, right? Ireland has it. It had a very contentious relationship with the UK and there have been many problems in the past. We'll put a link below if you want to read more about that, but there are some hard feelings on the UK side. Irish about that, so the feedback we had we found out that Dairy London Dairy is called morecommonly Dairy simply Dairy Steve Sanford 1437 gave a very clear explanation about the way the locals feel about it being called London Dairy and dairy.
I'll copy it. and paste it below, we learned new abbreviations from the comments, we found out what ffs meant. Alan meser 5078 said it's Dairy for sake, that one made me laugh yes, but our favorite was Billy Irish 304 who said London Dairy, the only word in the English language with six silent letters there were some very intelligent comments there the conclusion is uh we will always call it Dairy from now on yes we have learned our lesson yes so now for 5 and a half our half mistake that fact was that we did not stay longer we would have liked to stay one more day and then we would have liked staying one more day and then one more day after that but we only count that as half a mistake as we plan to resolve it by returning to Ireland in September, this time we will visit the southern half of Ireland whether anyone watching is from Ireland or not you're from Ireland but you've been to Ireland so we'd love to hear your recommendations on where we should go pretty much anywhere south of the Gallway line to Dublin is where we'll be traveling this time and if you're an armchair traveler if there are places that he would like. to see us visit us on our trip to the southern half of the island, post in the comments below and let us know where you'd like us to go, just leave your comments below to share your favorite places in the emerald hallway and us.
I'd especially like to see little-known places that aren't on the typical list, so if you've enjoyed this video and aren't subscribed, we'd love for you to come along for the ride, where's that button?
