4 CANCELLED Sonic The Hedgehog Movies (Lost Sonic Film Adaptations)

May 31, 2021
The Sonic the Hedgehog series, while originating as a video game, has been reinvented in other media and formats for almost as long as it has existed, we have appeared in several long-running comic series, multiple cartoons, animated shorts, mangas, story books, original music albums, live shows, toys. and much more, but a medium that Sonic has never been able to translate to until recently, at least was that of feature

film

s, believe me, although they have tried several times, in fact, already in 1993, the Sonic the Hedgehog

movies

were put in production and finally being

cancelled

, some went further than others, but they all suffered the same fate;

However, at last, Paramount Pictures, Sonic the Hedgehog is bringing the song to the big screen, but before that comes out, why don't we take a look at some previous attempts to see what? I could have been in this video. I will review the Sonic the Hedgehog movie and the

film

projects that never saw the light of day. Let's get started, believe it or not. The first official Sonic the Hedgehog movie project was in motion as early as 1993. Back then, Sonic's peak of popularity in the '90s was that Sonic had two hit shows and the popular Archie comic series had just begun, so it made sense to take things a step further and make a Sonic movie in 1993.

Sega of America was looking to bring Sonic to the big screen and in August 1994, after getting the go-ahead from Sega of Japan, they signed a deal with MGM; However, those working at Sega weren't exactly sure what to make of a Sonic movie. I'm sure everyone has their perfect dream, Sonic. movie today, but back then there was much less to imagine, today the Sonic series has many stories that could easily be transferred to a movie, but back then all they had to do were games like Sonic 1 Sonic 2, I guess Sonic spinball like Aside from the early Sonic pieces of media, all of which were wildly different from each other, the entire identity of the Sonic franchise was up in the air at the time, so for a Sonic movie they really could have done anything for that from the beginning.

Sega President of America Tom Kalinski was concerned about the project, how exactly do you take the world scene from the first Sonic games and make it into a full movie? He was even more worried that the film would negatively affect Sonic's reputation. Niche, but the

movies

always received tons of publicity and a huge marketing budget. If this movie was bad, everyone would know it. An example was the Super Mario Bros. movie, which came out during the production of this project, a guilty pleasure for many today, but it was criticized. By critics and fans at the time, while many of the Mario movies showed how poor the idea of film

adaptations

of video games was, Sega believed that the failure of Super Mario Bros was due entirely to the weakness of the Mario brand, but leaving Sonic much stronger by far. better film potential, however, the film

adaptations

of Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat didn't fare much better than Mario, so one has to wonder if a Sonic movie was even a good idea at the time, a lot was written about about this project that was barely out of reach.

Regardless, they lobbied Richard Jeffries, who was a barely known film writer, and he was chosen to create a treatment pitch for the planned Sonic movie that would later be submitted to Sega of America. The treatment had to include the plot of the film, among other details. To help get ideas for the movie, Jeffries researched the series, of course, but he also spent a day with the Sega Technical Institute, even meeting with Yuji Naka himself, where the two discussed the potential of a Sonic movie next. to spend some time developing your ideas. Jeffries presented the final version of it. treatment for the film for Sega in May 1995.
So what you came up with with Sonic the Hedgehog Wonders of the World was a live-action CGI-animated hybrid film depicting Sonic the Hedgehog jumping out of video games and arriving In the real world, this project was simply a rumor for a long time, but unlike many of the movies we'll talk about today, we actually know a lot about it, including a full plot synopsis, tons of recently released concrete information through interviews like In addition to really detailed articles, we've learned quite a bit about Jeffrey's canceled Sonic movie, Pitch, and now we can imagine what this canceled '90s Sonic movie could have been like in all its absurdity, said this, although there are no images of this film.
It was never filmed and no concept art has ever appeared, if any, so we don't know who would have played the main characters, how Sonic would have gone for things like that, we have no idea if he did, however we know the story. . was something like meeting 12-year-old Josh Pinsky, the identifiable American Kid of this film, the film begins with Josh presenting a rushed, incomplete history project to his class. Josh's work teaches his class about a test pilot named Sonic who died in a plane explosion while trying to break the sound barriers, yes this movie was going to start with that just to warn you, the plot of this movie is Absolutely crazy and no, I'm not making any of this up, as Josh clearly rushed his task on the cleverly named lay pilot, his teacher. he wasn't happy that josh was sentenced to rewrite the newspaper tomorrow or else he would get in serious trouble now josh is going through a lot at the moment his parents recently separated and they don't pay much attention to him he isn't . well, at school and he's a pretty awkward kid, he has an Escape through Sonic the Hedgehog, more specifically his favorite game, Sonic extreme for Sega Saturn, that's true, at some point during development he realized that this movie could be a link to promote.
Sonic extreme, which at the time was the next big Sonic game, Sonic extreme, as I'm sure most of you know, was never released, the story of that game is a lot of devastating stories on its own, for which I won't go into. but knowing all the chaos that went on behind the scenes with that game makes this movie Pitch a lot stranger in retrospect anyway and Josh is picked up at school by his father named Hal who was a scientific genius and always made great progress in his field, although he is currently unemployed, his most recent project is an artificially intelligent computer that uses holograms to project whatever you want into the real world.
Hal calls it xri, which means extremely radical intelligence. Later, while his father is not at home, Josh approaches the device and asks her to write his The historical document about Sonic to him does not respond to show what he means. Josh then plugs in his Sega Saturn and places his copy of Sonic extreme available on holiday 1996 while he plays, strange things start to happen. Sonic, not the test pilot. the

hedgehog

stops responding to Josh's controls and through the power of the xri he realizes that he has a will of his own and then this is how it is explained in the treatment and Josh discovers a bug in the game that Sonic uses as a gateway to the real. world Sonic then jumps out of Sonic extreme and enters our world in the movie treatment.
Sonic is described as a 3D CGI guy in the real world, considering this was in the works in the mid 90's you can imagine how awesome that would have been. now in Josh's apartment Sonic begins to destroy Havoc since he is not used to the real world in the middle of the chaos Robotnik also escapes from the game and that is where the real plot of the movie begins Sonic chases Robotnik but cannot stop him Sonic quickly discovers who is getting weaker the longer he stays in the real world, which gives the movie some tension after that shocking realization, Josh's dad comes home, oh no, Sonic is hiding, but the xri is completely destroyed and Hal is not happy.
Josh's mother, Lisa, also shows up and the two begin to discuss that Josh has gone to his mother's house leaving Sonic behind the next morning. Josh is woken up by Sonic, who I guess somehow he just found his mother's house. Sonic is noticeably extremely tired and tells Josh if they want to even have a chance at defeat. Robotnik needs to regain his powers and the only way to obtain them is through the chaos emeralds. The two then discover that yes, okay, chaos emeralds really exist on Earth. Somehow this had never been discovered before and it took a kid with a blue

hedgehog

to find them, but that's okay, apparently the emeralds aren't hidden inside special settings but inside ordinary Earth rocks with the treatment that says you just have You have to know which ones to open.
This sounds like a really exciting setup for a scene where Sonic and Josh just start breaking rocks. which you don't care about is what actually happens, but somehow they manage to find one using it. Sonic regains his strength, but SuperSonic fans shouldn't get too excited because he doesn't appear in this story after seeing what he did to Sonic. and Josh is curious about the Emerald's powers and asks Sonic to test him for some reason. Sonic agrees and Josh gains some temporary superpowers. He uses those powers to finish his story work in seconds, but when he asks Sonic for more, Sonic refuses saying that he needs to master his powers first, whatever that means, meanwhile, he might be wondering what the Robotnik's master plan in this movie.
Well, it's building a theme park. Yes, this is one of the first instances of Robotnik's land appearing in a Sonic Media piece or at least. More or less, Robotnik somehow establishes his own corporation called Shady Corporation, which he uses to buy an abandoned theme park, then renames it Botnik Land, the main target of robotics in this movie, it actually seems pretty harmless, he just wants its own theme park, nothing. too malicious, he just wants to run an amusement park. Robotnik also discovered that the emeralds are here on Earth and finds a group of school bullies, presumably Josh's bullies, whom he turns into robots creatively called Bully Bots, then bury them underground and start crushing them.
Every rock they find desperately searches for emeralds. Robotnik then meets with Hal and asks him to be the park's lead research and development designer. I'm not entirely sure if Robotnik was meant to be a cool 3D CGI guy like Sonic, but I imagine so. what makes Halo Green work with him almost makes no sense, just imagine a scene in this movie where this adult scientist agrees, the paperwork fills out everything to work with this kind of CGI ball? We really missed the high quality cheese it would have. I have seen this movie now with Hal an xri on his side Robotnik creates the best theme park in the world using the xri Robotnik develops a virtual reality attraction that attracts children from all over Robotnik's dream of building a theme park has been fulfilled Kids from all over the city are flocking to the land of the botniks Sonic and Josh then go to investigate and unfortunately they quickly realize that all is not well in the land of the botniks, that's right ladies and gentlemen, the land of botniks owned by the Shady Corporation is actually a ploy to robotize the Youth of America in that film's plot twist.
Scholars are still baffled because it turns out that Robotnik is using his attractions to turn children into robots he refers to as kinderbots. These robots once again have one goal in mind: to find the Chaos Emeralds, so now we have Bully Bots and Kinderbots, that's it. Bad news for our heroes Sonic and Josh, the duo investigates the park further and discovers that the robotic plants are doing even more nefarious things with the xri. This is probably his most evil plan, but get this. He plans to use the chaos emeralds to program the xri to capture the world. landmarks and turn them into virtual replicas and then use them for profit, that's why it's called Wonders of the World, wait, this is the big reveal of the movie, really, oh no, Sonic Lookout robotnik will turn Mount Rushmore into a 3D model , stop it, Sonic and Josh.
He tries to stop Robotnik, but Sonic is even weaker now Sonic ends up being captured by the stalker Bots and Josh barely escapes. Well, we're getting to the end of this and okay, the climax of this movie sounds like it revolutionized cinema. No joke, this movie would have been the end of cinema as we know that well, so the climax of the movie was Josh going and rescuing Sonic but then using the xri to transport Sonic Robotnik and himself fromI go back to Sonic extreme, so basically we have Sonic Josh. and Robotnik fighting in the Jade Gully area or wherever they had chosen in the game and that's where the final battle was going to take place.
Sonic now having all his energy back, quickly defeats Robotnik and flees with the defeated robot. Sonic tells Josh that he needs to go home and stay in the game world, leaving Sonic behind and simply realizing that if Sonic were in the real world there would be no heroes in the game world. I imagine this would have led to the most moving and heartbreaking scene. in movie history when Josh says goodbye to his new friend Sonic knowing that once he returns to the real world he will never see him again Josh turns around holding back tears and slowly leaves Sonic extreme on the next vacation in 1996.
Although not everything is sad, Josh returns home. and reunites with his parents, the movie ends with Josh playing Sonic Extreme once again, he tells his dad that he will remove Xri from the game, but before doing so, Sonic stops moving, turns to the screen and winks at him. Watch out for Josh and that's the story of Sonic. the Hedgehog Wonders of the World, this movie ultimately never went beyond this tone. In truth, it's been said that Sega really loved the script, even Japan's Sega was on board. Some plot changes were suggested here and there, for example one staff member requested that Robotnik be removed. of the script in favor of an original villain to make the film more exciting for existing fans, plus, although it seemed like the film would be made, however, before the project received an official green light for full production, mg GM he suddenly backed out of the deal and abandoned the project.
Without a development studio, a last-ditch effort was made to save the film when the film was pitched to DreamWorks, a brand new studio at the time, but they were not interested and the film was scrapped, no one really knows why MGM opted out. withdrew from the deal. I personally doubted it had anything to do with the story, as it actually sounds pretty fun and perfect for a children's movie. I imagine it was more so due to Sonic's declining stardom. back in the '90s, the release wasn't finished until May 1995, and that was long after the last big Sonic game in years, Sonic and Knuckles, had been released.
Unfortunately, Sega wasn't in the best shape in the mid-90s and Sonic wasn't doing much better. it still had a large fan base but its overall popularity was declining as far as MGM or DreamWorks were concerned they probably saw Sonic as yesterday's news and a weird live action CGI hybrid movie that was meant to be a tie-in to one game just didn't do it. It doesn't seem like a movie worth its projected $150 million budget, the movie was too risky and its story ends here, however, this of course wouldn't be the end of Sonic film projects, so let's continue, alright , the next one is crazy, get ready.
For Sonic Armageddon, one piece of Sonic media that seems perfect for a film adaptation is the short-lived but widely praised Saturday Morning Show Sonic the Hedgehog, better known as Sonic Sadam and, given this show's story-heavy structure and the serious tone, its universe would be perfect for a movie, this is especially true considering the show ended on a cliffhanger with the third season canceled before the story could conclude, a follow-up movie would be a great opportunity to give the series the conclusion it deserved. I have a great dedication. fanbase so it's strange that more material hasn't been made from it, sure we had Archie Comics but there was never a direct sequel to Sonic sad am as it was originally presented.
I guess the show doesn't really align with how Sega wants to represent the Sonic brand today, but a final movie would have been really awesome and, believe it or not, we almost understand that at one point this story goes back to 2002, the The late Benhurst, a prolific writer who worked on both Sadiam and Sonic Underground, made an attempt to revive Sat am Deke was on board and suggested that Hearst talk to Sega, as it would ultimately be his decision. His original plan was to produce the long-awaited third season, as it was in production at one point before the show. was canceled after contacting Sega.
Hearst received a phone call from Ken Penders, known for his dealings with Archie Comics, who had heard about the idea of it and wanted to create a full Sadiam Archie Sonic movie. Hearst's writing credits on Sodium include some of the best episodes of the series, such as the explosion of the last two parts and the series finale, Project Doomsday, considering how great the stories in those episodes are. , it would have been amazing to see what he would have done in a full-scale movie, unfortunately. although that would never happen and neither would Stadium season 3. Instead, and this is how the story plays out online, Penders apparently called Sega himself and told them that Hearst was trying to cooperate with the Sonic franchise through his Saddam Revival and warned them not to go.
We moved on and right there, any hope of a Sadiam sequel died. Instead, Penders pitched them his idea for a film similar to Hearst's concept. It would be a movie based on the Sadio and Archie universes and its name was Sonic Armageddon. Okay, so this is what we know was done for this project. Four, count them. Four pieces of concept art were drawn by Penders for the film and, boy, are these some pretty cool stuff. First, we have this one of Sonic holding Sally, who is crying, probably because she looks like Mobius. Exploded apparently the story of this film would have revolved around the explosion of Mobius and life after that.
I guess that's why it's called Sonic Armageddon. Doesn't that sound like a fun Sonic the Hedgehog movie? Secondly, we have this nice photo of Sonic improvising. in this messy room in 2002 while, oh hey, Sonic 1 plays on his TV, that's a nice touch, although the real question is who is it, who is this big-lipped man here, Sonic's father, Uncle Chuck, we may never know what we have next. funny drawing of what is this what was going to happen in this Sonic the Hedgehog movie well okay I think this is sarcastic and he is performing some kind of robotization on this poor creature this movie was going to be dark yeah let's move on With this we finally have this group photo of presumably the entire cast of the film, which has many characters.
Wow, Mighty was planned to be in this movie. He's crazy, some of the other characters also use some outdated designs which is pretty interesting to see. I'm not going to lie as a whole, this piece looks pretty or at least it's definitely the best of the concept pieces drawn for Pitch Penders. In fact, he has sold copies of this piece at certain conventions. It's not horrible. I especially like how Eggman is drawn here as the story of the movie would have once again involved Mobius exploding for some reason and then the consequences of that, that's really all we know, although how they would have incorporated all of these characters, who would have been the main villain in the real story, we have no idea we know. the inciting incident, but everything after that is a mystery, well we actually know how the movie would have started, okay let's see, along with the artwork, Penders also made this home video.
Presentation for the movie, you really just have to watch this video. The folder I really understand, it opens with some children. I guess Pender's kids are playing Sonic CD while one of them explains things I can't really see. Actually connecting to the movie here. Listen. They said it was just a video game, but I knew that. After all, my dad's job was to search for life on other planets, although many versions of the events he witnessed made it to the media, that was just security doing his job like, who could keep the secret so big? Anyway this is what my dad said actually happened yeah okay after that we get some animated parts where Sonic is at his house and then he picks up this item and sees it's his birthday which I guess that he forgot and then this happens.
Wow, this already happened. Wow, satium season 3 died for this. I mean, what am I talking about? How did this movie never get made? It's an absolute mystery to me. How could a studio, much less a person, see this release and not want to give millions of dollars for its entire production? I'm honestly surprised you still have this intro video archived, whoever uploaded the video said they found it on some old internet forum site, maybe Pender's forms anyway, big thanks to them for preserving the story, How this movie was released is a bit of a mystery as there are conflicting details surrounding it, some publications claim.
It was also released to DreamWorks around 2002 and while there was interest, it never took off whether these claims could confuse it with Wonders of the World, although see when I tweeted about this film with that explanation, Ken Penders himself corrected me, apparently that was never the case. was released to DreamWorks only for Sega and not in 2002 but in 2003, but apparently it also died in 2007, so it was four years in the making and that sounds a bit far-fetched and the truth is that no Sadiam or Archie Sonic movie could have made. It happened back then Sega had other plans for Sonic animated media Sonic X was a huge success around the time of the Saddam Revival projects.
I imagine Sega didn't want conflicting animated series running at the same time. I imagine there was a new Sonic fan who loves Sonic. X and they heard that a new Sonic movie was coming out, how exciting is that, but then when his family takes them to see it, this is what they see on the screen. It would have been a disaster if Sega had greenlit such a wildly different version. his series when it wasn't needed I think this is a Sonic movie project that most people are glad never saw the light of day, but hey, at least we'll always have this teaser video.
Okay, this one's a bit of a cheat, but I. I don't miss another opportunity to talk about Sonic OVA, the OVA anime of Sonic the Hedgehog localized as Sonic the Hedgehog, the film in the United States was originally released in Japan in two parts, the first was called Welcome to the Land of Eggman and the second part was Sonic vs Metal. Sonic came out in 1996 in Japan on September 7, 1999. ADV movies released Sonic the Hedgehog the Movie on VHS, a combination of the two OVA episodes, actually Sonic the Hedgehog the movie is actually just two episodes of a Sonic the Hedgehog miniseries together and edited so that they flow as a single movie in defense of the adv, the two merged episodes actually work together as one movie, but that was not the original intention of the animation, in fact, it is very It is possible that more episodes of the Sonic OVA would have been released. produced if the release goes better in Japan, unfortunately, although the physical releases of the OVA weren't good enough to justify making more parts, can you imagine what they could have done with more episodes set in this universe?
Episodes 1 and 2 focused on Metal Sonic, what if we had two more episodes focused on another villain like Mecha

sonic

or Team Hooligan, maybe even a new villain? I can only imagine what wild 90s anime villain they could have come up with. It could have been amazing, if there weren't more episodes. However, the only thing that was prevented by poor sales, as it was said that the anime's original soundtrack was planned to be released, but sales stopped its production, we are still feeling the effects of this as the OVA has absolutely stunning music, but most of it was never officially released on its own, most of the OVA's background music does not have clean copies available and fans resort to recreating the work that was never released.
There is also speculation that the Sonic OVA served as a sort of backdoor pilot for a full Sonic anime series which, of course, wouldn't be made until 2003's Sonic X, which was something completely different from the OVA project. We can only dream of what more '90s Sonic anime could have brought us. Personally, I love the OVA, it's one of my favorites. pieces of Sonic media, so it's really sad to think we could have gotten more from this series, but I guess, like every other project discussed in this video, we'll never know for sure what might have been weird;
It is unknown if there were other Sonic movie projects. In the works of the 2000s, I'm sure people had ideas for them, but none were as concrete as the ones I've discussed; In fact, Azuka has gone on record saying that proposals for Sonic movies were not uncommon, but I doubtthat many were very successful. Until now, in production outside of games, Sonic media in the 2000s was mainly Sonic the right one if that was until the early 2010s in 2012. yujinaka posted about a visit to Marsa Animation Planet Studios on his Facebook page. Looks like they're working on a Sonic movie.
Their offices look nice and were projecting. Did Yuji leak that he was preparing a Sonic movie? It is possible, but it is more. He's probably seen them working on one of the many animations they've done for the Sonic games, for those who don't know. Marsa Animation Planet is a CGI animation studio that has worked on many Sonic games. They cut scenes for Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Riders, Sonic Lost World, and There Are Many More, perhaps best known for their short film Sonic Night of the Werehog, which was made to promote Sonic Unleashed. The quality of the animation in all of Mars' Sonic projects is incredible and is some of the best CGI work to ever come out of the series.
It's unknown if Yujinaka saw them working on a theatrical Sonic movie, but this comment got the excitement for a Sonic movie burning once again and that excitement will finally be answered when Paramount Pictures' Sonic the Hedgehog hits the big screen on December 8. November 2019 while this movie. Do you know that the story behind this is as interesting as the previous films we have talked about? So let's talk about it. It appears that new developments for a Sonic movie began as early as 2013. This incarnation of Sonic has been in the work since at least 2013, six years before the movie began shipping, that said, although this movie went through intense struggles. development, news of this new project began to appear in late 2013, when Sony Pictures registered several domain names related to Sonic the Hedgehog Movie, these included

sonic

thehedgehog movie.com and sonicthehedgehogmovie.net.
Now domain names don't always mean something is happening for sure, but it was clearly interesting. At least something official was being considered regarding a Sonic movie at Sony. Sony should have at least acquired the rights to make a Sonic movie if they registered these domains, those domains were registered in December 2013 and we would get a couple more rumors about the movie from time to time, but it wouldn't be until summer 2014 when we finally heard something official. We're going to see the actual movie on June 10, 2014. The official Sonic the Hedgehog website was updated, while the update was probably due to all the new information about Sonic Boom that was released at E3 2014.
There was something interesting in one of the tabs. the website said TV and movies TV would be Sonic Boom but the movies and a Sonic movie was actually played was in the works maybe those domains meant something after all it turns out that yes the rumors were true we finally got official confirmation that Sony Pictures was working on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie and this was big news. Please note that none of the previous movie projects we've discussed were actually announced. We only heard about them long after they had already been

cancelled

. However, we did receive official confirmation that it was in.
During development it looked like after all these years we would finally have a real Sonic movie made by Sony. That day we got preliminary information about the film, such as who would write and direct it, as well as confirmation that the animation would be handled by animation planet Marsa and that in particular was very exciting if we had an animated film like Night of the Werehog waiting for us. Something great, however it quickly became clear that a fully animated Sonic movie was not what we were getting. Marza would be animating the animated portions of Sony's Sonic movie, but in reality the movie would be a live-action/CGI hybrid similar to the Alvin and the Chipmunks and the Smurfs movies.
Wow, they're trying again, but don't worry if there's no Josh. or extremely radical intelligence in this film Sony would be handling the live action and Marza would be animating the superimposed CGI characters like Sonic. They also announced that they plan to make this a trilogy with sequels coming out every year. That's right, we'd get a Sonic. movie every year from the fans' perspective which sounds like a dream but in terms of production which sounds like a nightmare and a recipe for rushed movies In the announcement press release, Marza CEO said that we are sure that this collaboration will bring a new take on Sonic while capturing everything fans love about him and this film would not be based on any pre-existing Sonic media, but would instead be an overall representation of the franchise to not only celebrate it for existing. fans, but also introduces new fans, while the premise of a live-action Sonic movie sounds pretty far from what most fans would have wanted.
I was excited to hear more about the project. It was so exciting that Sonic was finally coming to the big screen. The information couldn't have been far away, but then 2015 came and went and we heard nothing about the project. 2016 also brought little information about the film other than that it was delayed until 2018 and that Tim Miller would be the film's new executive producer on top of that. The news about the movie cooled down, fans began to worry that the movie had been quietly canceled, all that fuss was for nothing, maybe a live-action Sonic movie couldn't be made yet, but then on September 2 October 2017, more than three years after the film.
It was first announced that the film would no longer be produced under Sony, but Paramount Pictures fortunately the film was not cancelled. I guess technically Sony's Vision was, but Paramount had taken on the project after Sony's Columbia Pictures put the film into a recovery round, which meant the company declared the film a loss on its taxes, meaning They will receive compensation for it, but will not be able to use the property anymore. We see this a lot in the stagnant television programs where the networks write. Basically, Sony saw the film as a sinking ship, but Paramount saw potential in it.
Most of the original Sony staff continued to work on the film at Paramount and it appears that production has gone pretty well from the beginning. It was announced to be released on November 15, 2019, but was later delayed to November 8, 2019. Before we move on to Paramount's development of the Sonic movie, there's one last tidbit I'd like to share about the work of Sony in the movie, so remember the movie. the stay with me here interview not many people do it these days, but in 2014 it caused quite a stir. I won't go into details here, but the controversy led to a massive Sony Elite containing thousands of unreleased emails, scripts, movies, among other related materials. for the company, everything was released on November 24, 2014.
It wasn't discovered until some time after the initial leak, but within those emails was a mention of the Sonic movie. These Sonic-related emails are dated June 12, 2014, so they're from a bit after we initially knew a movie was in the works, this email written by the SVP of Sony Pictures releasing internationally says: Hannah mangela just called me to let me know that a very popular video game for years from Sega Game Maker called Sonic the hedge dog is being turned into a live action movie. The rest of the email actually contains useful information. She explains that the film was going to be a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Sega and says that both companies will finance the film. 50 50 But, uh, Sonic the hedge dog, obviously this was just a typo, but I guess from now on we could refer to the canceled Sony movie as Sonic the hedge dog with no relation to Sonic, but there was another email dated on October 23, 2014 with the subject Simply Mario. detailing that Sony had secured the rights to make an animated Mario movie, however, it seems things fell through as Lighting is now making the Mario movie, regardless of the fact that we're not talking about canceled Mario movies today, so let's move on forward.
I guess I shouldn't comment either. a lot about the Paramount movie since this is a video about canceled Sonic movies and this one is actually coming out, but here let's talk about all the leaks that happened during the preparation of this movie because at this point I wouldn't be surprised if the entire movie ended up being leaked before its release in late May 2018. It was reported that Paul Rudd would play the character of Tom Wachowski in the film. Tom is a newly recruited police officer who works for the Green Hills Sheriff's company and he is the one who runs it. he becomes Sonic and befriends him in the film, but shortly after it was confirmed that he would not be played by Paul Rudd, but rather by James Marsden.
A couple of months later, in July, Saman said images of Marsden in the role of Tom appeared online. I've received quite a few images from the beginning of this movie, my personal favorite is this one showing a sign saying welcome to the town of Green Hills in 1981, which I hope wasn't a reference to a Sonic 1 that came out from 1991. We wouldn't hear any substantial information about the film as of late 2018, although at CC XP 2018, a Brazilian Comic-Con Paramount showed a trailer for their Sonic film Behind Closed Doors. Somehow, this trailer never leaked online, so we only have retellings of it, people.
Those who saw the trailer stated that Sonic looked much more realistic than normal, but still cute and attractive. We always assumed that Sonic received a redesign for the movie, but it wasn't evident how different he would end up looking. People claimed that he still looked recognizable, but. completely different, but then on December 10, 2018, IGN published a story showing a moving poster teasing the upcoming film. The poster only showed a silhouette of Sonic, but it gave fans enough to work with on a full screen display of Sonic's muscular arms and legs, his Nike shoes. Stuart Little, with his blue eyes and of course his arms, it was clear that this movie was not going to be that dream Sonic movie that fans have been dreaming about for years.
This wasn't even going to be a movie about Sega's Sonic, it was Paramount Sonic. Tim Miller described Sonic's redesign, the part that stood out to me the most was this: When he described how this Sonic has two separate eyes, he said: I don't think Sego was entirely happy with the decision about the eyes, it won't feel like a Pixar character because I don't think it's the right aesthetic to make him feel like part of our world, this implies that Paramount went against what Sega wanted for their character design. If Sego wasn't entirely happy with the design, don't you think they should have reconsidered?
I mean, after all, they designed it, but anyway a second Sonic in the Wild movie poster was quickly discovered and appeared in several theaters across the United States. This was of Sonic sitting on a bridge showing off his nice muscular legs. Yeah, I'm sure things were fine at this point. It definitely looks questionable, but we haven't fully seen it yet. I was holding my breath until we saw the Sonic movie in its entirety, whenever that was, but then literally the next day this appeared apparently originating from 4chan. This is a leaked test poster for the Sonic movie showing Sonic in full, sure he's not Sega Sonic but he looks cool in my opinion, but something doesn't add up here.
Sonic's shoes, for example, are different from the motion poster, as is the logo, and wait a second, that's Chris Pratt playing Tom. Not James Marsden. I can't find an exact source for this, but most people seem to agree that this poster is legit, but it's from a much earlier point in development, which explains why there are so many things out of place that make you ask you, though Sonic. It still looks like this in the final film. I actually really like how Sonic looks here, he's more realistic looking of course, but I think this is a great compromise between what Paramount wanted and Sega's original design.
Safe things like not giving him socks and having blue arms. a little questionable, but look at that face, it's a cool design, if this is what Sonic looks like in the final movie this might not be so bad, however, as this was from an earlier stage of development there was always the possibility that they changed Sonic's appearance since then. then, and it seemed like that was the case, I mean, compared to themoving poster, it doesn't really line up, we wouldn't get answers for months, until March 5, 2019, when a style guide for the film was discovered and leaked.
Companies that want to make toys based on the Sonic movie will likely be given this style guide to base their products on while being natural. Skeptics, this was real, the style guide showed things like what the products for the movie should look like in terms of packaging design. We got a probably unauthorized cameo from Tomi's modern Sonic figure. He gave us a brief overview of Sonic's personality in the movie and of course gave us our first full look at his design. To be fair, these pieces are 2D illustrations and not 3D renders, not exactly how it will look in the movie, but it must be pretty close if this is what will be used as merchandise.
Speaking of a base, let me tell you that I am very excited about the merchandise that is coming out for this movie, plush figures, I can't wait, I will try to get as much as possible because wow, is that thing going to be a time capsule? In several years so far it has been confirmed that Jack will specifically be making figures and plushies for retail and the Toy Factory company will be making plushies for amusement areas like arcades and carnivals, so if your dream is to see a Sonic movie 40-inch, the plush of an arcade that may become a reality one day.
Personally I think most of the arbuck in the style guide looks pretty good. Some of them I really like. This one looks so cool. Obviously this is in no way what anyone wanted from a Sonic movie, but. Hey, it will be interesting to see another interpretation of this franchise in terms of its design. It looks quite similar to the original leaked poster, although it has slimmer proportions and smaller eyes. I think his eyes were a little bigger. It would look really good from now on. I'll have to get used to it the same day this style guide was leaked.
This depiction of Sonic appeared online from an anonymous source. I liked him at first, but again I wish his eyes were bigger and his body was closer to the proportions we saw in that leaked poster a few days after this not-so-flattering image of Sonic running towards the camera also leaked online and it seemed to come from some kind of promotional brochure and the other's art. properties surrounding Sonic, if that wasn't enough, a full synopsis of the film's plot was leaked online by Reddit user Shrek's donkey 57, who claimed to have seen an early test screening of the film, which I won't go into detail here. because it is beginning to be seen.
This is legit and I don't want to spoil the whole movie, so with all these leaks coming out it seemed like it would only be a matter of time before a trailer for the movie came out, but nothing, they completely ignore the leaks and no trailer came out, there was Rumors of a trailer floating around insiders with claims that Coolio's Gangsta Paradise was the best-sounding background song, but nothing was confirmed until Cinemacon 2019, where Paramount showed two full trailers for the film. in Sonic and Tom and the other focuses on Robotnik played by Jim Carrey and yes, the trailer for Sonic features Gangsta's Paradise at this point, although we're getting quite far away from the original topic of this video, so I'll leave it here. maybe in the future I will do a full history video on the development of Paramount Sonic the Hedgehog but for now all we can do is wait for the movie to be released and there you have it a history of all the known Sonic the Hedgehog movies. projects that never saw the light of day and are very far from what fans wanted from a Sonic movie.
In fact, I'm very excited to see the Paramount movie when it comes out. I know it looks very strange and who knows if it will actually be any good. but man, it will be so much fun to watch it with friends. What I'm saying is that this movie looks like it's going to be one of the most epic movies of all time and I'm so excited about it that I remember years ago dreaming about a Sonic Movie watching videos like the Sonic the Hedgehog movie trailer from Sonic toast and hoping that one day something like this will happen.
I'm excited to finally see Sonic on the big screen, even if he's not the Sonic I've grown to love. However, you have to wonder how different the series would be if any of these films had come out. The series would have been completely changed by any of these movies released, for example, if Sonic Wonders of the World had come out. Sonic would have had a huge boost. popularity and who knows, assuming that in that timeline Sonic extreme also came out, maybe it would have sold incredibly well, completely changing the future of the series. I've always wondered how different Sonic would be now if Xtreme came out, would we still have gotten Sonic Adventure? probably, but it's fun to think on the other side if Sonic Armageddon had come out and the series would have gone through Sonic Armageddon.
Remember what Tom Kalinsky said. A movie is so broad and receives so much marketing. Everyone would have known. A movie has the potential to increase the popularity of a series, but also completely ruin it. It's a big risk versus reward situation. I imagine that's why so many people are concerned about the Paramount Sonic movie. If poorly received, this could seriously ruin the series for years to come, but I guess we'll just have to wait and see, maybe Paramount Sonic will be a great situation. success and bring the series to levels of popularity it hasn't seen in years, maybe Sony's original plan for a Sonic Trilogy will come true and we'll get sequels to this movie, but at this point only time will tell.
I hope you enjoyed it. This look at all the canceled Sonic movies over the years, do you wish any of them had come out? Do you think any of them would have been better than the Paramount movie? Regardless, it's always fun to speculate and think about what might have been foreign.
