4.0litre, 405bhp Theon Design 911 review. And you thought Singer made the best 964 restomod..

Apr 06, 2024
Well welcome to a new video from Harry's Garage and today's car is a very special one, it's Theon's custom

design

ed 911. The car you see here started life as a 1992 Porsche 964, then the owner of that car took it to Theon

design

and for 390,000 plus V8 converted it. In this very special car, you can see here extraordinary the details that Theon's design goes into and how this car is created. I've been to their works, they're right down the road from here and the quality, the vision and the passion that goes into making this car is off the scale, but it's a very expensive car and you can't help but mention at this point that There's a company called Singer that also makes 964 recreations like this that go back to an earlier era of the 911 with that classic look, but this.

It's the British version and they have very quietly jumped on this car, it's gbr 002, the second car for the UK, but the first car appeared in 2019 and they have a global base, they build around five a year and there are around 6,000 hours. Get into this car, there are also some eye-watering expensive extras, but the driving feeling you will see in a moment is quite special, let's take a closer look now before continuing. I think I should mention this. Number plate UK viewers will probably recognize it. It is known as a trade plate, so the customer of this car will be collecting it next week, so it is on a trade plate rather than the actual registration plate that will be on it in the UK when collecting the cars.

More Interesting Facts About,

4 0litre 405bhp theon design 911 review and you thought singer made the best 964 restomod...

Next week or so and just the shape and what happened here, well what happens is a 964 donor car arrives and it's completely stripped down and obviously any repairs or anything, because it's a 1992 car, so we are 30 something years old. old, everything that was done in the repairs is like new, but the wings have everything removed and it is a custom

made

carbon body that is then placed in place of the original Porsche wing and hood, etc. ., and if you just look at the front, this is also all carbon. It has that splitter underneath that a classic 911 didn't have, so we are trying to bring back the beautiful look of the original 911, but it is all custom

made

, do you think it could be an original indicator, no it is not, it is because of the design of Theon. and the gauge, but it's thin, 10 mil, doesn't have that horn grill, the originals had very well made modern headlights and I like the way they are indented where the crest goes, we opened the front in a minute. keep coming and then you get the fs wheel on this car 17 on 18r optional and I really like this car on the 17 it just sits great and has a higher sidewall with the 17 inch wheel than you get with the wheel 8 inches by the writing on the side this is lovely because it's actually under the varnish, obviously the car has custom made paint, this is a classic metallic oak green color from the Porsche range, these custom made mirrors too and What I didn't realize was that I was thinking well, I still have the gutters in place.

I wonder if they are carbon fiber? No, what happens is the window frame and this is still the original 964, but it is allowed on this car. It had a sunroof originally, but this is a carbon roof that is bonded to the steel. The only pieces of steel I did put a magnet around. The windows surrounding this Scuttle front are steel, but then it's carbon and I'm hesitant to knock on the door because actually the doors are original Porsche, it seems they keep them as steel for side impact reasons. It's a good idea to do and it's a very tricky body part to do, but then you get these glorious puffy rear arches, the big fat foot wheels at the back with a wider rim and a very nice radius over here.

I think it's absolutely glorious how I did it, but then you get the original screen on the back and a bit of a finicky spoiler, but this spoiler like on a 964 shows up at work and I also like how this grill is just the way you see it. I always find that

singer

when they put that glass on it and the holes look a little strange, not so here it looks completely standard, but if we step back at the rear, we get the kind of muscle, the look of this car and the quad exhaust, a lovely detail, this is a high brake. the light has just been implemented there, really nice, I don't notice this at all and it's lovely how they've done it.
I also like Theon's design. There is the emblem that tells you what this car is now. A 9911 engine never looks so good. Well, it's just glorious what they've done in this. I should mention at this point that if you pay your 390,000 plus VAT you get a rebuilt 3.6L 285hp engine, the owner of this car checked the box for the latter. engine option and that is a 4L engine that produces 407 horsepower. There is an option to have batteries here instead of this plenum here, this grill here. There's no difference in power, it's just what you're happiest with, but they do have individual throttle bodies. on this car and I love how if you go back you will see that there are no accessories.
They made this engine as simple as possible, so it's obviously air-cooled and the alternators are there, but there's no A/C pump to really seat. in the nose there is no power steering pump or anything like that and here this wire that will be difficult to see with this light, but that is the only plug, if you were to take this motor out, all you have to do is unplug it and all the Engine wiring is done through that plug, it's a very neat install, the final diesel is here, this is a little shifter cover, if I just take it off and underneath is the oil filter, it's a horrible red color and annoying to Adam.
Who is the company? Theon design, so he actually created a leather cover for it, but what an engine that is. You can also see this type of suspension at the rear and soon going towards it because this car has the optional adjustable shock absorbers. This and the padded firewall type are also a glorious thing to consider, although looking at them neither of them run true airfi. They have this gauze but no real air filter. The positive side is the off-scale induction noises. Take a quick look at the interior, let's just say we'll look at this in more detail when we get out, but while the DS's look standard, but they're not, they're Theon design again and all the Inside, with the padded shifter, all that stuff is optional. six speed gearbox in this car and it has these weird high back sports seats and also the rear seats but I say we will see in more detail when we take it out of the carbon bonnet as you can see and there are no struts so you have to have a little bracket like that and there you go, so yeah, the size of the carbon here is all tied together with some kind of clamp that goes between the suspension towers.
I'm just going to lift this up because this I'll show you where all the gubbins are, so down below is the electric air conditioning unit and there's also a power steering unit here, the air pump and the ABS, it's all very different to a 911 standard, but it increases the weight and that's why that engine. The bay is so neat, it's so nice you can also see the carbon weave there and then if you look at the badge here, build number gbr 002, so like I say, second car for the UK, but than definitely What this car is about is the driving, let's take it outside now, one of the things you first notice is that everything is so light that you know you lift the front hood and stuff and then the door has kind of that metallic noise so heavy that you get with Porsche, it's here because it's the steel door instead of a lightweight Z that you have to try to close several times, but what I found, well, it's strangely familiar, but they're not, it's the Porsche 964, well, Porsche instruments as we know them and then classify them.
Everything seems standard and normal, but then they are different, like these switches that you turn or pull, they are just not metal, they are not the plastic that you normally get from Porsche, it is a very strange mix. of things that these seats have these ricaro seats are an option I think it's one of those things that doesn't look quite right, you know, because of that look, but they are exceptional seats to sit on, so you know it's an option that you can I have a more standard/period looking ricaro seat, but yeah, what else do we have in a carbon finish here?
Two cupholders, electric windows, and then there's obviously a six-speed manual gearbox and this stainless steel knob that's actually in use. very nice and there's a weird knob here that I should mention my phone goes in there it mag mounts and charges which is a pretty nice touch and then underneath is this 5 way adjustable suspension that you get as an option on this car yeah , I should just mention some of the options because some of them in this car are, there are many, I'm not going to tell them all at once, but yes, the adjustable suspension, for example, is a 12,000 option with R gear of six speed in That five speed gearbox that they put in a 993 RS gearbox is kind of a standard gearbox eh, but this six speed one costs an extra £26,000.
The woven toggle seen here, it is very well made. I can see why people would check that box. Additional £7900. if not, we can see well, yes, nardy, beautiful, nardy, when he talked to Theon, this black look, uh, and it's, that's all, unfortunately, it has a you might hear a little bit of noise when we move forward, it's just a slight noise, just rubbing. the boss, but the details, these beautiful handles here, solid, easy to get in and out of um Ventus, it's very strange how familiar it is, but it's not right like these ventilation, if I just turn on the ignition, yeah, they all They turn on, but that is not normal.
Porsche, but it looks like a kind of Porsche, very smart green instruments here, the red line at 7,000 actually passes, but everything else looks familiar. 180 mph speedometer. I'm purposely not going to start the engine yet because it's too loud in here and I don't want you. to distract me too much, yes, and then, yes, the two plus two seats in the back, but that's enough. I think what I'm going to do is drop this engine running now yeah that's what it sounds like from the outside it's pretty spectacular inside it sounds like this I have the exhaust option this is quiet um if I just take it out and turn it on that adds a bit of Base we should say yes, the switchable sports exhaust is I think so, £3200, there is an option to have a quarter exhaust.
I think I might lean that way, but we'll talk about that in a moment. Let's get out there and, yes, take it on some of my favorite roads. Yes, in short. Gearing is amazing, I mean yeah I'm in fourth doing 63 and a little bit 1000 RPM, fifth drops it down to 2 and a half we go down to yeah 2000 yeah about 55 in 2000 so what's that? 22 23 3 m per 100000 RPM but there is a harshness there is a very distinct noise with this 4 ler and it is incredibly highly tuned you know it just runs the normal 964 head but it has very clever ECU control and I am really impressed even though it has a wild camera. which has 4.47 horsepower at 7200 RPM, they haven't had to reach crazy RPM to get the horsepower and 100 horsepower per liter is also good for the light flywheel and I should mention that it was in its silent mode and I measured it on my stretch of road, yes, 83 DB at 60 M hour, that's nothing once this car turns on, as you'll find out in a moment, it's the typical 911, you know you have U um screen that you can see . and um it's not intimidating, I was impressed as soon as I got in this car, it just felt comfortable and familiar, a little bit of weight in the steering, but yeah, other than that, yeah, it's just your normal 911 until you get it you listen to the ticking. and it's lumpy I think so, we just got this jet uphill.
I'm going to open this valve on the exhaust. I think I'll shift into second here and see what happens and the world goes crazy, but It's not crazy, crazy, McLaren 296 Madness. I really like the performance a lot. He weighed this car, he goes to the center of gravity to configure it and the weight of this in the curve weighs 1169 kilos full of fuel, more than 200 kilos less. than the 964 it was based on, which is pretty impressive and yeah, the other interesting thing is I think it's the 5941 front. I mean, they actually moved the weight balance slightly forward from what you normally get in a two-wheel drive vehicle, they put in 911, which is smart. also, but four and five horsepower with 1169 kilos to move, yes, it moves lovely, an excellent trip.
I love this. I love it. I have five settings on the shocks. I can run on the softest setting and just go low. A little bit of a road like this and I just want a little bit of control. Turn up the volume. It's a really good option. It's expensive, £12,000, but I'd have to tick that option if I got one of these and then set it up properly. very stiff, love it, has those higher tars, you're not as worried about potholes and other things that you might be if you had gone through the 18 inch wheels or thelow profile that we have in cars today, but it is very stable, very good configuration.
It's interesting the exhaust valve when we were filming this car from the outside, it's running and you can really hear it when you have those valves open, a real grinding sound, a real race car sound when you're off. It accelerates and when you accelerate, it's crazy, but it's not much louder when you have the valve open or closed when accelerating, when you don't accelerate, you really notice it, but there is noise here when you have it open. I measured it, I think it was 96 DB under the throttle, now that's loud, we like, you know, Porsche GT4 rses sounds, but just listen to the quality of the sound and I love that beep, how quickly you'll step on the throttle and it's just outside the Reps flare, so I open the valve again.
I think I should try it here. You can't help but shift gears. that Val game just does some likes and dislikes starting with the dislikes, yes he, there are some types of minor dislikes, one of my main complaints. I don't have a break from my clutch foot. I don't understand why the pedals have moved. The pedals are beautiful but I would like a clutch mount or when you're getting cracked and just to prepare for corners and stuff you get one. I checked out a 964 RS on the right and drove that I had one. I wish it was here just for some.
From the type of instruments I can't get heat with this. I'm sure it's great on air conditioning, but I can set it to 1. I don't feel any heat coming from it. The radio is pretty rubbish, but then you use blue. Blu too and everything works well reflects a wonderful and impressive design. It's annoying that this brace gets in my way when I look out the window and I'm a little grumpy about it, yeah, another one is a sloppy gear change, it's, it's, it's a beautiful rapid. It shifts from third four four fifth but you go from third to second, there's a little more movement than you think there should be in a spoked car.
I think that could be adjusted a little and also the price, well I'm We'll get to that at the end but let's go through some lights, well sound, that's with the valve closed by the way, oh it's intoxicating how it behaves this car. It's all there. I feel one with him. I can dip it here. Take. second for this Challenging Corner, no problems, no one is cutting the power, it's just a pleasure, my goodness, it's gloriously polished, we've had a lot of time to perfect the 9 11 and then you go to Theon's design and they just take it to another .
At a level like the

singer

has also done it, I suppose, but the health, the engine, the aggression and yet it is easy to handle, the power and that torque, and it is because they are 4 lers, they always have torque and the Steering, pitch, brakes, yes the brakes are a superior option. Also, I think it's 8,900, like I say, there's a lot of boxes to tick to get to this spec of this car, it's all tailored to this driver's car, what you expect from the spec while running on the road, then we got Let's move on to the appearance, right?
Sensational, you guys look at it twice, you listen to it and you look at it and you just can't understand it. Is it a classic from '91? It doesn't sound like that. What is it? It has a real presence from the outside, I'm angry, I'm very proud to have this outside the house or you just see it parked and yet it has the usual versatility that you expect from 9/11, it's perfectly usable and I love it. The way they have hidden the carbon on the outside there is no hint of it until you open the hood and see the fabric underneath or interestingly if you actually fill it with fuel I had to fill it up it runs on sharp 80 and then the filling of the field cap is obviously carbon, you see it from below and I like the little rubber mat designed by Theon to protect the paint when you're filling it up, all the clever little details like that, yeah, concluding on this car, what a machine is.
It kind of stays away from the S of these crazy Resto mods, you know, they turned it up to 11 because the price is prohibitive, they are very special machines and I often wonder if the star over substance I shouldn't have worried about getting into this. Just a homemade one to drive. I love it, but obviously it comes at a price. I added up all the extras on this car and put 650,000 on it. A donor car is probably in the £90k range too, so this is a £34m car. Singers are now sold for around a million pounds and according to Wikipedia there are around 400,450 of those, if you want a DLS singer, 2 million pounds, it's a crazy world, unjustifiable, but there are people who want the

best

and this like a driving machine like a The 911 is very, very special.
Is it worth 3/4 of a million? I feel like saying that I make you can decide on that if you have decent enough pockets to do so, so what would I choose if you love the 911 and really want to experience the ultimate, light weight, analog feel Theon design with 911 spokes It's very special. Is it as special as that? Sporting purpose, the little 9911. I had that was my really special G 11. I loved the 2.2L engine and it was even lighter than This is how the classic looked good. I couldn't stand the driving position. It didn't have a very good gear shift and it was a special moment.
I go in and drive it every day and it has that durability and modernity that you would think I have this but then again it's twice the price I can't mention the prices it's crazy so I'm not going to go there but it's a very nice machine to drive this car the engine there are only some cars that come and you never want to be picked up this is one of them I don't compare it to that one is the Audi Sport Quattro in I didn't want that one to go back I didn't want this one to come back there was that one Ferrari M Touring with the rear fin.
I never wanted that one to come back, so it's in a small group of very special cars I've had to test drive. I have enjoyed it very much. You may have to turn the exhaust valve again. Oh my gosh, yeah, well, I'm going to enjoy a few more miles in this crazy car. I hope you enjoyed this

review

as much as I did. I had made it, if you have, keep watching and subscribing, there will be more videos very soon.
