Everything I tried to do was cheap and I didn't hire anyone to do it because I thought I could do it myself. So we're going to go ahead and do that and I'll show you how I made my backsplash, how I finished our peninsula on the kitchen island or in the kitchen. I guess it's not an island because it's not separate, it's a peninsula anyway. I'm going to make some DIY shelves. I'm really, really excited to finally share with you the full look of our kitchen

makeover

updates

More Interesting Facts About,

300 diy kitchen makeover budget diy kitchen updates...

We're going to start with our peninsula and as you can see it's like particle board or whatever type of board is on the back so I took a little walk around Home Depot and I wasn't expecting to find this but I found this chipboard. 48 by 96 inch white pine which I love and I actually didn't realize it was going to be that cheap so when you go to Home Depot they will cut it for you and it's about two dollars. and change, so it was a lot easier for me to do it because I only have the SUV, I don't have a truck, so it was easier for them to cut it and I was able to cancel it, which was nice.

It's just that I actually had two large pieces of this left over for a different project, so I went ahead and took them home, but I actually missed the mark by about a quarter of an inch because our countertops on our floor weren't level. to do a bunch of leveling when they installed them so you can see one of them one of the sides doesn't touch the floor, my husband actually had to take this to Home Depot again to cut off that little extra sliver because I just couldn't get it done on house so anyway I'm going to use some liquid nails to put it on the back and then I'm going to put it against the peninsula so keep in mind when I share the cost with you it's pretty much the cost. of the materials and stuff and you know some of the tools I have some of the tools I had to improvise and you may not spend as much as I do or as little as I do depending on your project and here I am taking my stapler These are nails that I'm nailing in there because we don't have a nail gun and that was too high a cost to purchase for this project, so I'm putting those nails in there and then, you know. hitting them with a hammer and at first we were going to put the liquid nails around the molding as well, but we decided against that and just went ahead and made the nails, so this is my table saw that was kind of freaking me out about this project.

For some reason, it kicked me anyway. I'm going to use more molding and corner trim, so this is for the outside corner of that peninsula and it cost five dollars and 20 cents and I used a third of it. so I'll have some left over for our next project and then okay, this piece, I don't actually remember how much it cost, it may have been a couple of dollars and I also think it was an eight foot piece and I just needed um. I cut it into three pieces. I don't remember to be honest with you and this piece was lying around in our garage.
I couldn't even tell you how much this one cost, however, how much did it cost? 9 42 when I bought it and we had to buy four pieces and I had about half of one left over so again I'll have some extra for a different project. I feel like I'm rambling a lot so I hope you're still following me. I don't need that kind of drama and trying to be tough just yet. Try to make yourself feel better by tearing me down. I will fight. No, nothing. Alright. So you can see that we put liquid. nails on this one, um, but we pressed it against the peninsula with some weights and I actually had to find some nails that were perfect for this job and we used nails for the rest of the molding and then what I did was I went in with some painters putty and then also some flat white paint to cover any nail marks, any gaps or anything between the cabinets or base cabinets and the trim, so my dog went through there and left a big old stain.
So I had to clean it and repaint it. Anyway, that's what it looks like and honestly, it's not magnificently perfect, but you can't even tell and I think I did a pretty good job, you know? Considering we don't have all the necessary tools we made it work fine so for the bottom of our dishwasher there is a big old gap right there and I took a piece of extra flooring and just cut it to size and made a little slide cover for him, I think I could have some left over from this ornament to create one to match, but for now it will do, so I thought it looked beautiful and then I went and looked at our ugly old bar stools, so I saved myself a couple of hundreds of dollars and just Basically re-manufacture them or salvage them.
I was going to paint them but I know my family and my kids and I feel like the paint is going to come off so I left them as is and the dark color matches anyway like you guys saw there oh. Look, Milani is coming to check my work, I don't think she's happy, so anyway, I just took the seat off and then I have this Joanne fabric that I've had for a couple of years, so I didn't spend any money. I currently don't remember how much I paid for it, all I know is that I have it on clearance and I'll show you a little more of what it looks like, so yeah, I'm just removing all the staples. from below and you know, taking off this old, nasty fabric and I feel a little embarrassed because the foam inside it is disgusting and I thought I had some foam in our attic, but I guess I didn't and I didn't really want it. to add any extra cost to my project so I left it as is because you know well anyway it's all done and I'm going to take my piece of fabric and I'm just going to lay it on top of my newer fabric and like you I can see that it has like a double layer, so it also has a little cushion and I'm just going to trace around the original fabric to make sure it's the right size and then I'll keep using it.
That stapler cuts Brad Nailer and I'm going to put it in Look at yourself Where are you looking at me? Try to make you feel better by knocking me down once. No, there's nothing stopping him. I will always rise again. So while it looks beautiful, it still looks a little plain, so we'll add some backsplash and they go to Home Depot or Lowe's. You will find that the backsplash is quite expensive depending on the material it uses. You know it depends so I feel like the tallest ones were like 10 12 15 for a square foot which is ridiculous and even the fake peel and stick backsplash is 12.19 no thanks so I always like the clearance and those things.
I actually found this one that is similar to the one I bought for 333 at Home Depot at Lowe's, although I bought it for 298 and bought 12 sheets, so I took that one home anyway and I'm going to move on. and I cleaned my surface here and if you notice the cabinet handles, I didn't share much about adding them there either, but I'll show you what they look like and how much they cost, so here I am. Removing the face from the plugs, which is a whole story that I'll tell you here in a moment to save some money and time instead of doing what's that thing called where you don't put grout but mortar. or whatever, I didn't want to do that, so I bought this adhesive sheet that is super strong.
In fact, I used it several years ago on my bathroom backsplash and it's been perfect ever since, so I trusted it. I'm going to go ahead and do it so what I'm doing is double sided and it's very sticky so I just want to make sure my sheets are facing down and I don't remove the peel off the top until I go to lay my tiles . I thought it was perfect because if I remove the top tiles from the mosaic sheet, if it's perfectly on my wall, there's no extra cutting to do or anything else, so I want to make sure it's nice and stuck there, so I just did it.
I tried again with my ruler, so I took the sheet off and then I just put the mosaic sheet in there and didn't press it firmly until you want until you're sure where you want it and that it's set right. Even otherwise you're going to have a really hard time getting it out so with my grout float I just press it in there, you know, just to make sure it's there firmly and once that's done I'll do some. cuts and I will have some problems with my cuts, but for this one I'm just taking a dry erase marker to make my lines and then using this Blue Hawk tile cutter that I had when I did my bathroom several years ago.
I went ahead and took it out and it's really easy to use when you know how to use it, so what you do is you just place the tile where you want the cut, mark it, just snap it right in the center and it comes out. come out nice and clean or at least it should be unless the tiles or the cuts are too small so as you can see I'm actually doing individual tiles as well so I'm going to address some issues and you uh. We'll see, so I actually have these spacers that come with the tile, which really helped me a lot, so here's the beginning of the problems I had.
I needed to make some fine cuts for the mosaic, like horizontal and not vertical I guess. Yeah no vertical not horizontal so anyway I cut it and you can see it's not cut evenly so what I did was I scored it twice and then instead of cutting it instead of breaking it right on the center, I actually place the small foot towards it. up and then press down on the bottom so you see, instead of doing it right in the center, go up to the top, press down on the bottom with your fingers and then just snap it, okay, very close, but new, it was still a little patchy. so we tried and tried again until we got it and this is as thin a piece of mosaic as we're going to get.
Believe me, I tried to make it smaller and just couldn't, so here is my dilemma with this piece. Here it was. I'm going to put the tile under the outlet, but then it turns out that this is going to stick out too much and it's going to be inverted, so it actually sticks out a little bit anyway, and I thought maybe because it sticks out it might be flush once. This was removed but it's not, I already tried it and yes, it's definitely going to be too high and it's going to be too far in, so the other option was to remove it completely, so I'll show you here. on this one because I did the same thing here and it was a pain trying to cut these smaller chips out of the tile um and I ended up breaking every single one of them so I figured once I put the grout on it will catch some of the grout, I'm pretty sure, so if it does, I'll have to go in there and paint it a little white and this is just what happens when I'm new to stuff like this, the only other option I saw was to take this out and I shouldn't touch it because it's still active and that It's something that scares me.
I don't deal with electricity at all. The only option was never to stick the face out a little bit, but again that means I'm messing with the electrical system, which I don't do, and then you put it like a wedge in the middle so I push it out and because I don't want to. do that, I'm not going to do that, I'm just going to leave that there and what I'm going to end up doing is actually creating a frame like um, you know, more of a kind of decoration that I'm I'm going to put on top of that that you can put on and take off and no.
It's going to look so bad, but I guess this is what I'm going to have to do for now because I don't know, I really hate this right now. I don't know, I'll stare at it for a while.moment and I'll have you guys look at it with me. because I'm lost I really wish I could put it under, well, I'm going to have to deal with it and then one more piece here is like the smallest piece that I need to cut like tiny, tiny and this one. The thing doesn't work, look how many pieces I've broken, I'm already trying to figure out different cuts and it doesn't work so I don't know, I'll figure it out when I do.
I'll show you right, so I'm going to use some premixed grout because it saves me a lot of time. The last time I used grout I had to mix it, but I didn't have a grout mixer, so I ended up using a mixer like that. you were using it for baking so that wasn't good so taking my grout float I actually just go there like at an angle and press it down and with the same um when I press it down I wipe it off too so yeah You'll see I like to press it onto the tile and then wipe it with the side and then just go back and forth again at an angle.
This part seems pretty intimidating but it's actually not that bad so now I take one of these big sponges just squeeze out all the water just let it get wet very subtly I don't know what I'm saying guys the later it gets come back, the crazier I get and the more tongue-tied I get, so anyway I'm going to do it in circles because when you go around in circles it's like you mold the grout into the folds, so, yeah, follow me and can you guys Believe what the hell I'm doing here? literally molding the grout into the outlet, um, because that was the only option I had and I know it seems ridiculous and I know I'll probably get roasted for what I'm doing, but you know, I'm just a girl trying. do homemade stuff and I have to do what I have to do so it's going to leave a haze anyway but you don't want to clean that until it's dry maybe several hours and then you want to put some sealer on it and I didn't actually do that . show that part that I just forgot and if you can see here, I'm still trying to mold that damn grout into the tile and if you notice this side of the countertop is actually lower than the last one I made and that's why it didn't fit like that, one sheet didn't fit and I couldn't make the tile small enough to fit in there so this is what I'm doing and you know what we have to live with to cover the You know, not so pretty um outlets.
I picked up this little piece of trim and I think it was like a dollar ten at Lowe's or Home Depot and it's about three feet long so I just cut out the pieces that will fit exactly on top. the outlet and I'm just using little nails and I'm nailing the corners and I'm using a stain, it's a special walnut or something like that that I bought at Home Depot and I'm just going to stain it and then use some double super glue. tape to stick them, not glue them, but fix them to the outlets. I miss you so much that now I can find my way to painting.
I'm going to use some caulk and I think this tub cost about eight dollars. So I'm just going to take a putty knife and then fill all the holes in the wall, there are a lot of holes in the walls, so this dries in about an hour until you can sand it and it turns white. so you know when it's dry, once it's all dry, I'm going to start painting and again, you know, whatever tools you have, I had some in my stash and some I had to buy, so these are really perfect for similar edges like the window or the trim and then the bear paint I bought is in cotton gray and this gallon was about 22 dollars and I used a fraction just for the kitchen so I'll have enough for the rest of the house so yeah just pour it on there like it's paint and then it starts rolling and I saw you walking down the line and the truth may come, you'll be the last one to think about it, we have time on our side, we're in a state The final touch of all this is my farmhouse style shelves so I bought this piece of wood at Lowe's for about 9 18 and it's six feet long.
I cut it in half and I'm just going to sand it really good. Do you know how weird my fear is that when I'm sanding my hair will get stuck in the sander for some reason, so I always make sure I have my hair up in a bun? Yes, it is a strange and strange thought. That goes through my head every time I use power tools or a sander or whatever, so yeah, be very careful, so I'm going to sand it really good and round the edges so it's nice. They're not like they're pointy or sharp, so when I'm done I'll use the same special walnut stain to stain it.
These stands are from Amazon, come in a pack of four, and were around $35. I'll be sure to link that and then everything else I can below so the only thing about these brackets is that they don't come with screws or anchors or anything like that so luckily I had them on hand and then These are about five inches long long end to end on each side so I'm trying to measure where I want them and I felt like about six inches from the edge was a good distance and I think it worked perfectly. So yeah, I'm just going to screw them in there and then I didn't show how I drilled the holes in the wall and added the anchors, but you know it's pretty easy to figure out, so after that I'm just going to hang them up and that's it, oh, before Lest I forget this step, I used some chalkboard paint to paint the silver screws and it fits the color and texture of the brackets here and honestly, I wish God I could stay wishing This moment will never go away, but it's all there in my mind and although I know there is nothing to find your beautiful sight under the sun and you can't fight in the fog, I see how you are wrong while you are. wandering the streets alone, all you can see thinking about how your life came about and you can't fight in the hazy light, okay guys that'll be it for the final look of our remodeled kitchen let me.
